Chapter Five: Beacon Academy Ruins
Ambrose pierced his hand through shadowy flesh, raking it out from the left. The ursa minor fell on its back, with their body now dispersing. He turned, cleaving through another ursa minor's neck. The wound was deep, being halfway to decapitation. It fell onto its own black liquid, body also dissipating.
There were many grimm either around Beacon Academy, or congregating towards it. As the Hunter got closer with every grimm he killed, the silhouette in the distance became more defined. The object was definitely a large grimm, resembling some type of dragon. Whether or not it was actually part of the academy's main structure is up for debate. Although, Ambrose concluded that it was not.
The Hunter dashed away from a deathstalker, slicing into their pincer that was stuck in the ground. It ruptures, sending out black liquid from the wounds. The grimm backed away, golden stinger ready to strike. Ambrose dodges forward, with the attack completely missing his body. The Hunter serrates into the deathstalker's head, also making it rupture. A gloved hand pierces into the shadowy flesh, raking out from the left. Black liquid splatters everywhere, with both the grimm and its fluid dispersing moments later.
With enough grimm killed, Ambrose was able to travel even closer towards Beacon Academy. Ahead of him, he could see the damaged stone pathways and other destroyed architecture. In front of him were the bodies of what appeared to be machines, given humanoid form. The Hunter continued walking, seeing much of the same destruction, with a few old bloodstains around him too. Eventually, he would stop several feet away from a larger machine, crumpled in the center of a round plaza.
Ambrose stepped forward out of curiosity, wondering how it had been killed. However, a big shadow flew past the Hunter, leaving behind a black smoke trail. The grimm had bone-like spikes on their back and ribs, with long skeletal forearms and sharp claws. Its face had mask-like bone plating with Grimm markings, and a single vertical red eye with a yellow pupil. The rest of the body resembled a hooded figure in a tattered black cloak, yet there was no cloth.
The Geist stared at the Hunter, then glanced back at the collapsed machine behind itself. Quickly, it entered the damaged mechanical humanoid, causing the body to spasm as it rose. Black smoke swirled around the machine, as the grimm's face was burrowed into the insectoid carapace-like head. The swirling darkness ceased, with the geist fully integrated into the metal body. The machine's arms folded, revealing a set of guns aiming towards Ambrose.
A gentle pressure of incoherent whispers entered the Hunter's mind, as he began dodging gunfire from the possessed Atlesian Paladin-290. Getting close, its arms refolded to bring out their fists. The Hunter rolled, dodging a punch into the ground that cracked the stone pathway. His saw cleaver serrated into the paladin-290's leg twice before the geist tried stepping on him. Ambrose dodged again, continuing to hit the leg he was targeting. Sparks came out from serrating the metal, along with smaller bits of the armor falling off. Reacting, the paladin-290 jumped back to create distance. The machine crouched slightly, then launched a barrage of rockets travelling towards the Hunter.
Ambrose quickstepped, dodging almost all of the rockets. The last projectile impacted the Hunter, with the explosion pushing him back. His colorless aura shifted, redistributing itself evenly after getting hit. The Hunter recovered with a roll, now sprinting to close the distance between himself and the paladin-290. The machine fired another barrage of rockets, yet Ambrose was prepared to counter the attack. Next, he holstered his shotgun and clipped the saw cleaver to his side, bringing out a severed hand.
Holding the beast's appendage up, a roar was exerted around the Hunter. The shockwave redirected all of the rockets, leaving Ambrose unscathed. He ran forward, hitting the machine's leg again. The joint broke, causing the paladin-290 to fall. The Hunter backstepped away, then briefly clipped his saw cleaver to the side. His gloved hand pierced into the geist's face, causing the entire machine to spasm. Raking his hand out from the left, grimm liquid splattered everywhere.
The geist's body reacted, with its head temporarily forced out of the paladin-290. It wriggled itself back into the machine, stabilizing its control over the object. In response to the Hunter's attack, black tendrils reached out from the damaged leg. Believing that the grimm was distracted, Ambrose began hitting the other leg, creating more serration wounds. However, the geist was reaching for materials to replace the damage inflicted upon its current host body. Finding its replacements, the grimm retracted the objects back towards the damaged leg.
These were the metal humanoids Ambrose noticed earlier, prior to discovering the large machine currently attacking him. Three Atlesian Knight-200 machines were placed over the serration wounds, with the individual bodies becoming animate. Reacting, the Hunter rolled underneath a grabbing motion from the paladin-290, then began hitting the knight-200s being used. One of them aimed their rifle towards Ambrose, trying to shoot him. The Hunter dodged its gunfire, then counterattacked with his beast hunting shotgun.
Quicksilver shot impacted the knight-200, damaging it enough to briefly stop shooting. Before it could move again, its head was serrated off by the Hunter's saw cleaver. As the head fell to the ground, Ambrose refocused on the opposite leg, continuing to damage the limb. The possessed machine reacted again, bringing out its guns. Yet, instead of jumping away from the Hunter, it aimed towards the ground. Ambrose rolled away from the gunfire that spread stone fragments, now underneath the paladin-290. The Hunter continued attacking the other leg until it eventually broke.
The possessed paladin-290 fell, with its head vulnerable for an inner organ strike. Again, the Hunter pierced his hand into the geist's face, breaking more of its bone-like plating. Ambrose raked it out from the left, forcing part of the grimm to come out of the paladin-290. With its bleeding face and partially missing eye, the geist could no longer focus. The machine's movements were briefly slower, as the grimm extended its body to reach for other knight-200s to cover damage to its other leg.
Ambrose dashed, cutting the black tendrils to stop the geist from pulling the bodies in. The grown extensions dispersed, with the grimm refocused on killing the Hunter. It stepped forward, then jumped in the air while aiming. Ambrose quickstepped, avoiding the hail of bullets until rolling away from the paladin-290's landing. The impact causes extended shadowy flesh to show itself slightly, with the geist pulling those parts back into the injured legs. As it recovered, the Hunter began cutting into the paladin-290's left arm, serrating into the folding joint.
The arm refolded, revealing a hand attempting to grab Ambrose. He dodged again, causing the machine to punch downward. More of the stone pathway broke, with the paladin-290 repeating the attack four times before it stopped. The Hunter unfolded his saw cleaver, now attacking with the opposite edge. He cleaved into the paladin-290's arm several times, causing the limb to break. Electricity crackled, as the machine leaned towards the left.
Taking advantage of this moment, he began cleaving into the other arm. Black tendrils came out of the left arm's cleaving wounds to readjust the metal, yet damage to the limb was still obvious. Before the Hunter could get the right arm to break, the machine reacted with a punch. Ambrose was almost hit, yet fortunately dodged by rolling underneath the strike. The Hunter cleaved into the arm a few more times until it finally broke, forcing the paladin-290 to lean towards its right.
With the geist distracted, Ambrose started hitting its right leg, trying to break it again. As he cleaved into the limb, black liquid splattered onto the Hunter and ground, dispersing moments later. Before the geist could respond to the attacks, the leg ruptured, with black liquid spilling out of the cleaving wounds. The paladin-290 fell forward, staggered by the attack. Ambrose pierced his hand into the geist's face a third time, then raked it out from the left.
Liters of black liquid splattered everywhere, with the severely injured geist violently pulled out of the advanced paladin-290. The damaged machine fell backwards, completely separating from the grimm. Rockets that had yet to be fired exploded, breaking the paladin-290 further. Remains of the geist's eyeball hit the ground, then dispersed alongside the liquid expelled. The grimm's broken face continued bleeding, shuffling backwards to create distance between itself and the Hunter. Ambrose ran forward, cleaving into the geist's head from the right.
More of the grimm's faceplate cracked, while separated fragments dispersed. Defending itself, it raised its left arm to perform a clawing strike. However, quicksilver shot impacted the geist, forcing its head up into the air before their entire body hit the stone pathway. Taking advantage of the situation, the Hunter pierced his hand into the geist one final time, then raked it out from the left. Nearly all of the geist's faceplate was gone, with its head leaking black liquid. It tried to push itself off the ground to float, yet it was too injured to move any further. The geist went limp, dispersing moments later.
With its death, a gentle pressure of incoherent whispers entered Ambrose's mind, deepening the depth of his inhuman knowledge. The grimm's echoing will was also absorbed by the Hunter. Behind him, a Hunter's Lamp appeared, placed in the center of the circular area. He looked at his unfolded saw cleaver, watching the black liquid that covers it slowly disperse before moving to light the lamp. Yet, right after performing the action, the Hunter heard a voice address him.
"As skilled as I find you to be, that was unnecessarily bold," someone said. "Granted, you were still able to kill the grimm, and I won't judge you for that."
The Hunter turns around, eyes focused on a woman with light-blonde hair, body covered in a layer of energy. Her posture indicated that she was stern, and was sharp enough to understand that the person standing in front of her was some type of huntsman. She glanced around him, noticing the lack of grimm in the area.
"Am I to assume that you're the one who dispatched all the grimm?" the woman asked. "Not a scratch on you either."
"I killed the grimm," the Hunter replied. "Yet, why are there so many gathering here?"
"You're...uninformed..." she responded. "Do you know what's happening right now?"
The Hunter shook his head, saying, "No. I've been alone most of my life, and have only seen a handful of people. Though, I do understand that an attack has taken place here."
She sighed, replying a moment later with, "You are correct. As for your question...the attack on this academy produced enough negative emotion to attract many grimm. This includes the geist you singlehandedly killed."
Negative emotion... Ambrose wondered. He thought back to his previous query, during his travel towards Beacon Academy. If I'm correct about Aura being a factor in the Grimm's aggression, alongside what this woman has told me, then... "Will there be another attack?" the Hunter asked.
"While my initial answer would be right now..." the woman started. "Hearing you state that you've killed all the grimm leading to the academy is...astonishing. You may have bought ourselves a bit of time."
"I did come here to help," the Hunter said. "Where do you want me to go?"
"I'm sure you've seen the city on your way here," she responded. "It's ruined, but I am doing my best to aid the people. I think they'll appreciate the help you give them."
After hearing this, the Hunter asked a different question, saying, "Where did the machines come from?"
"You really don't know?" the woman said, questioning his lack of knowledge. "Well, to inform you, they were sent here to protect the academy, including the rest of the people here in Vale," she paused. "You can see how that turned out..."
She turned around, looking at the ruined state of the academy, the bloodstains, and the broken machines. The woman looked down slightly, feeling a sense of failure in not defending the area successfully. The Hunter was silent, having very little left to say.
"I'll head into the city, as you told me earlier," the Hunter said. "Will I see you there at a later time?"
The woman didn't respond immediately. "...No, not yet. I will stay here. There is a lot left to clean up."
Ambrose nodded, walking away from the woman. He wouldn't go back to the Hunter's Dream, as the woman was right there. With the Hunter moving towards the City of Vale, she was left alone near the low hum of the Hunter's Lamp, believing it to be a somewhat ordinary object. Despite knowing it was never there before, she dismissed the lamp's significance. The woman brought out her riding crop, using her telekinesis semblance to move the further destroyed paladin-290 away from the path, while also fixing the stone.
