Kagome stood alone in a field of flowers, the sky a clear, vivid blue, and the wind carrying a tune that felt achingly familiar. She gazed at the woman before her, now corporeal, as real and solid as herself. This woman's skin was pale but her cheeks were flushed with color, her eyes bright and alive. She was tall, mature, and beautiful, with long ebony hair that reached her legs. She was dressed in a stunning silk kimono, clearly demon-made, and carried a sword at her waist, with a bow and quiver of arrows slung over her back.
"Midoriko," she whispered, her voice tinged with awe and uncertainty.
The woman smiled gently at her. "Hello, Kagome."
Kagome swallowed hard, her throat dry. "Where are we?"
"We are in a place where the living and the dead can interact with one another, but only briefly," Midoriko explained, her voice calm and soothing.
Kagome stared at her, feeling a mix of confusion and urgency. "You already know what I want to ask you."
Midoriko nodded and gestured to the grass beside her. "Come, sit with me."
Obeying, Kagome settled beside her on the lush green grass, inhaling the scent of fresh water and lilies that wafted from the elder woman. It was calming, but her mind was anything but.
"You have met the other spirit that resides in the Shikon Jewel, Magatsuhi," Midoriko began, her voice carrying a soft yet commanding tone through the wind.
Kagome nodded, feeling a chill run down her spine. "Why does he think that I am you?"
Midoriko's expression darkened slightly. "It is no coincidence that you, Kagome, a human priestess, were born with the jewel inside you eighteen years ago. That you have a demon lover that you covet, and that you are the Shikon Miko not because it was born inside you but because you are as powerful as I was."
Kagome's eyes widened in shock as she turned to stare at the woman beside her, who looked up at the bright blue sky. "So it is true then? I am you reborn?"
Midoriko chuckled softly, shaking her head. "No, Kagome, you are not my reincarnation. Your soul has never been anyone else's before. Your soul was created from the Shikon Jewel itself. In a way, you are mine, but not in the traditional sense. You were created by my will."
Kagome's heart pounded in her chest as she tried to process Midoriko's words. "Created by your will? What does that even mean?"
Midoriko turned to face her, her gaze intense yet gentle. "It means that when I created the Shikon Jewel, I also ensured that one day, a priestess with the power to purify it and protect it would be born. You are that priestess, Kagome. You are not a reincarnation, but a unique soul, born from my will to continue the fight against the darkness that resides in the jewel."
Kagome felt a mixture of awe, fear, and overwhelming responsibility wash over her. "So, my life, my powers, everything… it was all predetermined?"
Midoriko nodded slowly. "Yes and no. You have always had free will, Kagome. Your choices are your own. But your existence was meant to be a beacon of hope, a guardian of balance. That is why Magatsuhi feels a connection to you, why he believes you are me. Because you carry a part of my essence within you which has helped guide and watch over you all these years."
"You haven't said everything." She narrowed her eyes at the woman, "why have my powers been sealed and what did Magatsuhi mean when he told Sesshomaru and I that we are more than we seem?" "
Magatsuhi was born from a friend that secretly loved me, he was taken over by several youki and a kodoku. Just as Onigumi had a secret love for Kikyo and thus created Naraku. Magastuhi believes that your demon lover and yourself are the reborn versions of my own mate and myself. As my mate too was a powerful inu demon." "
He was…?"
Midoriko smiled, "as I said. It is no coincidence Kagome that your life has led to where it is now."
"My powers…they have been sealed. Why?"
"While Magatsuhi loves me and in turn loves you, he still fears your power and what you are capable of doing. He must have sealed your powers when you first used them when you traveled through the well."
Kagome's mind raced, trying to comprehend the magnitude of what she was hearing. "But… how am I supposed to do all this? How do I unseal my powers?"
"Magastuhi must be defeated, at the very least his physical form in order for your powers to be unsealed."
Kagome frowned, "how can we do that?"
Midoriko smiled, "you already have everything you need to win. Just believe in yourself as the time will come and you will make the one true wish."
"Koi."
Sesshomaru's voice startled her awake. The dense forest was bathed in moonlight, creating an eerie glow. The clearing was large and unusually silent, devoid of the usual nocturnal sounds.
Kagome frowned, disoriented. "Wasn't I with Midoriko just now? How did I get here?"
Sesshomaru stood a few feet away, his golden eyes reflecting quiet concern. "You were sleeping. Then you stood and began to walk. You have walked several miles from the village. I followed to ensure your safety."
She felt a shiver run down her spine. Had her meeting with Midoriko triggered this? Or was it something else entirely? This wasn't the first time she'd walked in her sleep; the last time had been to bring Kohaku to Kikyo. What could be the purpose now?
Sesshomaru's posture suddenly tensed. "Koi, come to me now."
A voice purred as if it were right beside her, "So you have come to me, Midoriko…"
Her heart raced as she whipped around, searching frantically for the source of the voice. No one was there, but the oppressive presence was undeniable. The knot in her stomach tightened, and fear coursed through her veins.
"Sesshomaru, what is this?" Her voice trembled slightly as she moved closer to him.
He growled low in his throat, a warning to whatever unseen force was nearby. "It is Magatsuhi. His presence is unmistakable."
Kagome's mind reeled. "Magatsuhi? But how...?"
Before she could finish, a figure emerged from the shadows, stepping into the moonlit clearing. The demon's pale skin glowed faintly in the silvery light, his long, shaggy white hair reminding her of Inuyasha. His blue lips curled into a sinister smile, and his eyes were filled with a twisted mix of recognition and malice.
"Midoriko," he said, his voice dripping with mockery and longing. "It has been far too long."
Kagome's heart pounded in her chest as she stood her ground. "I am not Midoriko. My name is Kagome."
The demon's smile widened, his gaze never leaving hers. "You may call yourself what you wish, but you cannot deny what you are. Your soul is hers, reborn and renewed."
Sesshomaru stepped protectively in front of Kagome, his eyes bleeding red with fury. "Keep your distance from my mate."
Magatsuhi chuckled darkly. "Such devotion. It is almost touching." He moved closer, his movements smooth and predatory. "But it will not save you."
Sesshomaru lunged, his claws aimed at Magatsuhi's throat. The demon dodged effortlessly, his laughter echoing through the clearing. "You are strong, inu-demon, but you are not invincible."
Kagome's hands trembled as she summoned her reiki, the pink energy swirling around her fingers. "Sesshomaru, be careful," she warned, her voice steadying despite her fear.
Sesshomaru glanced back at her briefly, his expression fierce. "Stay back."
Magatsuhi's eyes flickered with amusement as he faced Sesshomaru again. "You cannot protect her forever. The bond you share is strong yet weak. You have failed in properly mating her, and that makes you vulnerable."
Kagome could only watch in horror as Sesshomaru attacked him, only for Magatsuhi to laugh as the attack failed to land. She heard squawking and knew it was Jaken, always nearby. Then she heard thundering footsteps and saw a flash of red.
"Inuyasha!" she called out once he broke through the treeline. "Where are Sango and Miroku?"
"Kohaku is still unconscious. They stayed back to protect him." His amber eyes turned to Sesshomaru, who was dodging attack after attack from Magatsuhi.
Magatsuhi's taunts grew louder and more venomous, "You have failed, Inu-demon. She belongs to me as we are destined to fight one another till the end of time. Step aside and hand over Midoriko."
Sesshomaru's eyes flashed dangerously red, a sign that his control was slipping. Kagome's heart pounded in her chest, her fear escalating. She could see the beast within Sesshomaru beginning to surface.
He cackled, "She belongs to me, Sesshomaru. You cannot deny our destiny."
Kagome swallowed hard, recognizing the look in Sesshomaru's eyes. He was losing control. The primal, feral instincts of his beast were taking over.
Sesshomaru let out a low growl, his fangs elongating and his stripes becoming more jagged. His aura was becoming more dangerous, more volatile. She watched as Inuyasha and Jaken flinched back from his growing demonic aura, yet even while losing control, it never dared to come close to her. She knew she had to do something, but her mind raced with uncertainty.
"Inuyasha, don't intervene!" she shouted, her voice shaking with a mix of fear and resolve.
"Kagome, what are you talking about? He's going to lose control!" Inuyasha argued, his eyes filled with worry.
"If you intervene, it'll only make things worse. We have to trust him!" Her voice was pleading, desperate for Inuyasha to understand.
Sesshomaru's growl grew louder, his body trembling with the effort to maintain control. Kagome's heart ached at the sight of him struggling, the fear and concern for him nearly overwhelming. She knew she had to do something, anything, to help him.
"Please, Sesshomaru," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "You have to stay with me. Don't let him win."
Magatsuhi's laughter echoed through the clearing, his taunts becoming more vicious. "Look at you, struggling to keep your beast at bay. You are weak, Sesshomaru. You cannot protect her. You cannot even protect yourself."
Kagome's eyes filled with tears as she watched Sesshomaru's struggle. The love she felt for him was immense, and the thought of losing him to his own beast was unbearable. She took a deep breath, summoning her courage.
"Sesshomaru!" she called out, her voice strong despite her fear.
Her words seemed to reach him, and for a moment, his eyes flickered, the red receding slightly. He turned to look at her, his expression filled with a mixture of adoration, intensity, and a raw, primal lust that made her heart pound.
"Koi," he growled, his voice strained.
Before she could respond, Inuyasha grabbed her arm, his grip firm but gentle. "Kagome," he said urgently. "Stay back."
Sesshomaru's eyes narrowed, a warning growl rumbling from his chest. Inuyasha immediately bowed his head in submission, his ears flattening in deference. The gesture seemed to satiate Sesshomaru's beast momentarily, and Kagome felt a surge of pride through their bond.
"Give him space to deal with Magatsuhi," Inuyasha advised, his voice low. "His beast is on the verge of rampaging. You need to let this happen."
Kagome turned to Sesshomaru, only to see that where he had originally stood was now occupied by a magnificent dog the size of a mountain. His eyes were a vivid red with teal irises, his lips drawn back in a menacing snarl. Bright green poison dripped from his fangs onto the ground, sizzling as it made contact. His whole body was crouched low, ready to pounce at the first sign of a threat from the smirking Magatsuhi.
"She is mine," Magatsuhi clicked his tongue, his eyes gleaming with malice.
Kagome blinked, her heart racing. In an instant, Sesshomaru moved with blinding speed. His massive jaws closed around Magatsuhi's neck, ripping his head off in a single, brutal motion. Blood sprayed into the air, but Sesshomaru remained focused, his red eyes fixed on the decapitated body that crumpled to the ground.
Despite the gruesome sight, Kagome couldn't look away. Her eyes were locked on Sesshomaru, feeling the intensity of his protectiveness and possessiveness through their bond. His eyes met hers, and she could feel the depth of his resolve to protect her at any cost.
Magatsuhi's head dangled from Sesshomaru's mouth, blood dripping onto the ground. Even decapitated, Magatsuhi's severed head cackled manically. "You think it would be that easy?" he sneered, his voice echoing through the clearing.
Sesshomaru's growl deepened, his massive paws digging into the earth. He was ready to strike again, to tear apart any threat to Kagome. The air around him crackled with his fury, his beast fully unleashed and focused on the enemy before him.
"Kagome, stay back!" Inuyasha hissed, pulling her further away. "He's completely in beast mode. If you get too close, he might not recognize you."
"But I have to help him!" Kagome protested, her heart aching with fear and concern.
"You can't help him if you're dead!" Inuyasha shot back, his grip tightening. "Let him finish this!"
Sesshomaru lunged again, his jaws snapping shut on Magatsuhi's body, tearing it apart with savage precision. The demon's laughter turned into a gurgling choke as his body was shredded. Sesshomaru's eyes glowed with a fierce determination, his focus unwavering as he destroyed the threat.
The scent of blood filled the air, mingling with the acrid smell of poison. Kagome could feel Sesshomaru's rage and protectiveness radiating off him in waves. Her heart ached with the intensity of his emotions, her own love for him burning brightly.
Finally, with a final, bone-crushing snap, Sesshomaru obliterated what was left of Magatsuhi's body. He stood over the remains, his breath coming in heavy pants, his eyes still glowing red. Slowly, he turned to Kagome, his gaze softening slightly as he recognized her.
"Kagome," Sesshomaru rumbled, his voice a mix of beast and man.
She took a cautious step forward, her heart pounding. "Sesshomaru," she whispered, her voice filled with love and reassurance. "I'm here. You're safe."
She began to walk towards him, relief swelling in her chest. Suddenly, she heard the sickening sound of flesh moving. She turned towards the remains of Magatsuhi's body only to see them begin to heal and knit back together, just as Naraku had done so many times before.
"KAGOME!" Inuyasha screamed, rushing towards her. Before she could react, tentacles shot out of Magatsuhi's body, grabbing her and yanking her into the air. She screamed, her heart pounding with terror as Sesshomaru leaped towards her, intent on catching her. But more tentacles wrapped around Sesshomaru's true form, holding him back.
"SESSHOMARU!" she cried out, her hand reaching for him, just as the tentacles constricted around her again.
"Try and cut me down, and I'll take both the girl and the dog with me!" Magatsuhi cackled, his eyes gleaming with malicious delight as he stared down Inuyasha.
"In this form, Lord Sesshomaru relies only on brute strength," Jaken muttered, his voice carrying across the battlefield. "Although he's a dog, he isn't a bright one. It won't occur to him to transform back into his humanoid form." Realizing everyone was staring at him, he added with a squawk, "Dumb dogs."
Sesshomaru's eyes narrowed, and in a flash, he transformed back into his humanoid form. The tentacles holding him were obliterated as he fell to the ground. He shot a withering glare at Jaken, who squeaked and scurried behind Inuyasha for protection.
"Leave the girl with me, and you shall keep your lives," Magatsuhi smirked as Sesshomaru stepped towards him. The tentacles around Kagome squeezed painfully, causing her to let out a pained yelp.
Sesshomaru growled, his eyes flashing red once more. He was on the verge of losing control, his beast fighting to break free. He lunged at Magatsuhi, but the demon twisted away, pulling Kagome with him.
"Magatsuhi, you bastard!" Inuyasha yelled, swinging Tessaiga in a desperate attempt to free Kagome. But the demon was too quick, using her as a shield.
"Pathetic half-breed," Magatsuhi sneered. "You and your brother are no match for me."
Sesshomaru's fury was palpable, his aura crackling with raw power. He took a step forward, but Inuyasha grabbed his arm, holding him back. "Let go of this one!" Sesshomaru roared, his voice echoing with desperation and rage.
"We need a plan, Sesshomaru!" Inuyasha shouted, struggling to keep his grip on his enraged brother. "If you go after him now, he'll kill her!"
Sesshomaru's eyes flickered, his beast warring with his rational mind. The bond he shared with Kagome pulsed with her fear and pain, driving him to the brink. But Inuyasha's words cut through his fury, forcing him to consider the danger.
"Listen to him, Sesshomaru," Kagome pleaded, her voice strained from the pain. "It'll be okay, I promise."
Magatsuhi's laughter echoed through the clearing. "What a touching moment," he mocked. "But it's time for you to say goodbye."
With a final, taunting smirk, Magatsuhi tightened his grip on Kagome and launched himself into the air, disappearing into the darkness. Sesshomaru's roar of frustration shook the forest, his power flaring uncontrollably.
Transforming back into his humanoid form, he stared where his mate disappeared. Sesshomaru snarled, trying to break free from Inuyasha's hold.
"Not now!" Inuyasha gritted his teeth, using all his strength to restrain him. "We'll get her back, but we need a plan. Charging in blindly will get her killed."
Sesshomaru's eyes were wild, his beast desperate to tear apart the demon who had taken his intended. But Kagome's words, her plea for him to think, finally reached him. He forced himself to take a shuddering breath, his claws digging into the earth.
"We will get her back," Inuyasha vowed, his voice steady. "Together. We'll make sure Magatsuhi pays for this."
Sesshomaru just bared his teeth at him, his fangs elongated. That didn't stop Inuyasha from baring his own.
"She is my best friend," Inuyasha seethed. "She is capable of taking care of herself until I can save her for the last two years."
Sesshomaru's eyes slowly returned to their golden hue, though the fury still burned within them. "He will suffer," he growled, his voice deadly calm.
Inuyasha nodded.
Sesshomaru turned, beginning to walk back towards the village just as Jaken ran towards him sobbing. Only for him to fly through the air being thrown into a tree after he was kicked by Sesshomaru who didn't bother to give him a second glance.
Sheathing his sword Inuyasha followed, intent to keep an eye on his brother to not make any rash decisions. Like getting his ass killed because of his pride and need to prove that he can defeat Magatsuhi on his own.
