Chapter 1: Cinduri:
Cinduri's POV:
My name is Cinduri and I am carrying a heavy pot on my head. I had to fetch drinking water for the family. "When I get home, I must milk the cows, clean the house, prepare yogurt and cheese for tomorrow's meals, and milk the cows again," I said, "then I will have to clean the animal pens and pick vegetables to sell to our neighbors."

When I arrived at the water's edge, I stared across the rippling surface. I was thinking about the days when my life had been happier.

In those days, it was customary for a man to have more than one wife. Big families were necessary to help with the farm work. My Father had married two women, and each had a daughter. But the epidemic of cholera that swept through our village. It took both my parents. I was left with my step-mother, who only cared for her own daughter, Lata and that's how my life has been since!
