Chapter 3: Godfather Snake:

Cinduri's POV:

I then finished my meal.

"I would like to make life easier for you from now on," says the snake, "every day when you come here, I will bring you sweet fresh water from the bottom of the lake and plates of delicious food for you to eat. You will never be hungry again."

"Oh, that is wonderful," I said, I can then use the little bowl of rice my step-mother gives me to feed the peacocks and green parrots in our garden."

"You are a good girl," he replied, "you are thankful for what you are given. And you never say one bad word about that step-mother of yours who treats you like a slave or her daughter who is so jealous of your beauty. That is why I am adopting you as my Goddaughter. Now we are family, and I will do anything for you."

"You are the answer to my prayers, dear Godfather," I said, "but how will I find you again?"

The snake then taught me this magic song.

Snake: Godfather Snake, oh Godfather Snake
Godfather Snake of the magic lake
Come to my help,
For your daughter's sake!

"Come to the lake and sing this whenever you are sad or hungry, or if you need my help."

. . .

My step-mother noticed a change in me during the following days.

"You certainly look happy and well-fed lately, Cinduri. Hurry off now and get me more of that wonderful water you have been bringing home," she ordered. She liked the water that was crystal clear, cooler and sweeter than any she had ever tasted.

Lata's POV:

"I want you to go after Cinduri," says Mother.

"Oh, Mother, it is hot today. I don't want to go outside," I said.

"I don't care," Mother snaps, "you must follow that girl. Find out where she is getting such tasty water, and why she returns every day with a smile on her face."
