Chapter 9: Chance:
Cinduri's POV:
I was selling my vegetables to the neighbors. Then I came back to my sewing and my mending. As my Step-Mother and Lata swept out the door, they reminded me that I must weed the vegetable garden in addition to all my other chores.
I knew there was no time to rush to the lake and seek the help of my Godfather, the snake. Then I remembered his magic jewel, which was hidden in my dress.
As soon as I cradled the bright stone in my hands, I saw miraculous changes all around me. The house was clean, the butter was churned, the weeds in the garden had disappeared, and fresh water and straw appeared in all the animal pens. My work was all done, and my dirty dress had become clean, with not a patch on it.
"Oh, again my dear Godfather has helped me," I said, putting the jewel back in its hiding place.
. . .
As I hurried toward the pavilion I whispered over and over, "I hope I am not too late."
