Ezra Bridger never really listened to music before his time on the Ghost. It's not that he had never heard songs before. His parents would sometimes play whatever was on the network and on the streets you would often hear the thumping base emanating from nightclubs. But that had always just been a noise to him, something you hear in the background. It was when he started living on the Ghost that he discovered the magic of streaming music.
He first discovered the magic of music from Sabine. It had been a couple of weeks since the crew had taken him in and he was bored. Back on Lothal, he would have been busy just trying to survive but here there were long periods with nothing to do. Sure when not on missions Kanan kept him busy for part of every day with Jedi training but that could only take up so much of the day. Everyone else seemed to have something to do in their spare time. Kanan would either meditate or spend time with Hera, Hera would be working on her ship she would chat for a little bit but Ezra could tell when he was getting on her nerves. If they were at port Zeb would wander off to find a sabacc table or bar and if they were on the ship he would sit in the common room and watch the Holonet. Sabine would find some please to either tinker with bombs or create her art. Even Chopper would find something on the ship to fix or would play holo games.
All this meant that there were long periods that Ezra spent just wandering around the ship, or thinking up pranks to pull on Zeb. Recently he had gotten so bored he had started practicing the force in his spare time. On this particular day, he was simply wandering the ship, they had already been in transit for three days and he was pretty sure that if he pulled another prank on Zeb he would end up in a vacuum without a suit. He was making his umpteenth lap of the ship when he wandered past Sabine's cabin. Surprisingly it was open, Sabine was usually pretty protective of her personal space. Emanating from the room was a loud thumping noise overlaid with fast-paced talking… it was kinda like talking kinda like yelling.
Bored enough to risk Sabine throwing something at his head Ezra poked his head through the doorway while knocking on the panel directly next to the entrance. Sabine standing on a step stoolwith a can in hand turned her head to look over at the intruder on her domain. "What's up kid" Her voice was not overly pleased with his interruption but he figured if he played this right she would tolerate him for a little longer.
"Hey Sabine I was wondering what you were listening to?" he tried his best to sound simply curious. "It's Mandalorian Rap" She must have figured that solved it as she turned back to her work. Ezra thought about leaving while he was ahead but curiosity got the better of him and he decided to press "But I mean where is it coming from?" Sabine gave him that conveyed what she thought of his intelligence. "From my data pad kid, I have a Galactic Net Music subscription." Ezra was amazed by this "It can do that". "Um yeah, kid." It wasn't until her response that he realized he had spoken aloud. Thoroughly embarrassed, he thanked her (which she ignored) and left.
Quickly heading to his room and thanking the force that Zeb wasn't in he jumped up onto his bunk where he had left his data pad. To be honest he rarely used the thing. Remembering what Sabine had said he quickly typed in Galactic Net Music into the search bar. After a little research, he found he could listen to about five songs and then sit through an advertisement. Finally, he found what he was looking for in a genre labeled Hip Hop. It was similar to what Sabine had been listening to before but no one could understand what the yelling was saying, the lyrics were amazing it was all about how hard it was to live under the empire, and in poverty, living in the rim. He ended up sitting on his bunk listening to different songs until Zeb came back hours later.
…
Now after he had finished training or the chores he had around the ship he would rush back to his cabin to pull out his data pad and play music as loud as he dared. He discovered so many different songs. Mostly he listened to rap the lyrics and anger were something he could really identify with but he also found a genre called rock that had a similar effect.
At first, he tried to hide it from Zeb assuming he would be annoyed at the younger roommate's new habit until one day he moved to turn it off as Zeb entered the cabin only for the older man to call him off "You can play your music kid I don't mind." Ezra froze for several seconds before turning the music back on.
Soon Ezra started getting feedback from his older bunkmate. It seemed Zeb liked the rock music more than the Rap. It only took a little playing around with settings for him to find a way to separate songs that both he and Zeb liked from songs only he liked. After a while his new interest circulated around the crew, one day after coming out from a particularly frustrating training session with Kanan Ezra was greeted with the sight of Hera holding a small bag. She smiled at him and he did his best to try and seem happy and not be rude.
"Hey kid how are you doing?" Ezra managed to keep the annoyance at the nickname on the inside, it seemed like everyone seemed to call him a kid. "You know good days and bad" he tried a laugh but even to him it sounded more annoyed than amused. Hera gave him a motherly smile, a particular strength of hers. "This might cheer you up." She held out the bag for him. "Thanks, Hera." was Ezras' automatic reply as he took the bag. Looking inside he saw what was a pair of headphones. He had seen people on the streets before but had never actually owned one, or bothered to steal one for that matter. "What are these for?" Hera smiled again, I heard from Zeb you like music I figured a pair of headphones would make chores more fun.
Ezra was gobsmacked at the gesture "Thats amazing Hera thank you so much!" " No problem kid you're one of us you know don't be too surprised we want to see you happy" and with that, she turned and walked off. It took Ezra a few moments to realize the wetness on his cheeks were tears and a few more moments to remember to wipe them away.
….
It was several months later that Ezra came to a decision. He broached to topic first to Kanan, who was surprised but happy "Creativity is always a path to the light side, this is a great idea." With the encouragement of his master, Ezra decided to broach the topic with the crew.
He decided that dinner was the perfect time. Around twice a week the crew got together for a communal meal. Usually Hera or surprisingly Zeb would cook and then we would all eat in the common room. Today Ezra quickly finished eating gathered his courage and cleared his throat in what he hoped was a 'can I have your attention way' and not a 'I am choking' way. It worked a little too well as everyone's head snapped over to look at him. Floored by the sudden spotlight he stayed silent for too long leading Kanan to make a prompting sound. Figuring it was now or never Ezra started "Hey everyone, um I was thinking. I mean I have been listening to a lot of music recently and I guess I was thinking that all that stuff was kinda wondering if… I mean to say I was hoping to try to maybe if it works out create my own music but like more rebellious stuff against the Empire you know."
Ezra cringed back ready for the laughter. Instead, he got a room full of smiles and reflective nods Hera was the first to respond "That sounds like a great way to get our message out." Sabine looking thoughtful said, "Yeah you could even put sensitive information in there about the empire, like locations of secret bases of the illegal stuff they have been doing." At this point, Ezra's brain went pretty much blank as the others kept talking about how good of an idea this was. He had expected Hera to support him she was just that kind of person but apparently, the whole crew thought it was a good idea. No, he decided the just the crew they were his crew, and this was his new home.
