Learning to Survive

Synopsis:

Kara never understood the meaning of the words her mother and aunt used to say to her, she didn't understand how blood can bond us all when a family that should protect one another could treat each other so poorly, she didn't understand until one person changed that for her forever.

Lena knew the signs laid bare before her like looking into a mirror of herself and who she was not even two years ago, she understood the fear that came with speaking out, she knew it but still hoped they could heal one another and be stronger together.

Trigger Warnings-

So, this is me, we all know my writing is beyond angst like at times, and with that usually has some extremely triggering themes and elements to it. This story is no different. I will place warnings on each chapter as I do not wish to trigger anyone. I will say from the offset, that this story does depict and show in detail scenes and recounts of heavy physical and emotional abuse of children.

General Information-

This story is a no powers AU world with the characters from Supergirl. Background stories will be written about in some detail but to help with any initial confusion Please note that some ages of characters and relationships on how they know each other are different compared to the show. The story contains established adult Sanvers relationship. Will in time portray a teen Karlena relationship. Kara, Lena, Lucy, James and Winn are all highschool age in this story, the remaining characters are the ages they portray in the show. The opening preview and the prologue are written in first person though the rest of story will be in various points of views, however mainly Kara's and Lena's.

Learning to Survive Opening Preview-

I'm going to tell you a story, a story that is set over many years with many twists and turns.

It's a story full of love.

Full of romance and joy and laughter.

It's also a story full of pain, fear and heartache, but let's be honest, aren't all the best and most significant stories like that?

How can you be truthful without showing the ugly and bad side of life as well as the good and the beautiful?

Don't be fooled by the way I write this now; this story will be one most find hard to swallow due to the issues and themes it deals with. I am going to tell you about how dark humanity can really be at its worst while also telling you how amazing and kind humanity can be at its best.

Everyone has a story, everyone has a background, and everyone has been hurt in their lifetime in one way or another.

Some I think just go through more than others, some hide it better than others, some go through it much younger than others and some go through it much more gracefully than others – regardless we all have one thing in common.

We have felt pain, in many different ways, and we have survived through it.

I am fully aware that some of you may know who I am, you may know that in a few months' time I'm going to be one of the youngest CEO's of a multi-million corporation in history at only twenty years old. You may know that I have a beautiful and amazing girlfriend, or fiancée should I say, who is soon to be starting a budding and fruitful reporting career under one of the most influential women of National City at only nineteen years old. You may know that our family just like many others has not been made up of blood relatives, not entirely at least, but instead friends and those whom we would entrust our lives to fully and without hesitation.

You may already know this, but if you don't by the end of this story you will.

This is the story of how I and my family learnt to survive, learnt to become warriors, how we learnt to show compassion and love to those around us even in the face of darkness and despair.

But to understand that story, first, you are going to need to understand mine, or at least the background of what made me the person I am today.

My name is Lena Luthor, I am twenty years old, and I am probably one of, if not the richest person in National City, but that is not all I am.

For the most part I am mis-understood.

Tied to a name that does not define me, as I still try to battle my way out from under the claws of the family trying to drag me back into everything that being a Luthor is all about.

I may be a Luthor by name, hell even by blood, but I am definitely not a Luthor by heart.

By heart I am my mother's child, by heart I am a Sawyer-Danvers and always will be.

AN: So, wasn't sure if I was going to post this story, its been 6 plus years in the making but I thought you know what I'll post this preview and see what you think, if you like it and want to see more I'll add the prologue and we can go from there.
