Chapter Three

The Road to Recovery

A/N: I know, I know! It's been a long time coming. Ironically, I wrote about half this chapter while on a plane to New York back in March, and it's still taken me this long to post. I'll be better next time! :)

Kakashi

Mitsuki was held as a patient in the hospital for almost three weeks. Since then, I have resigned from Anbu to be there for her. I visited her daily, and I wasn't the only visitor. My niece was also visited by Guy, Tsume, Hana, and Kiba. Her classmates didn't visit as there was still a restricted list of those who could see her, but Kiba relayed numerous messages to Mitsuki about how she had to hurry up and return to the academy because she was missed. I didn't know how popular my niece was, but the amount of letters and flowers she received was astronomical. It was clear how loved Mitsuki was by those around her, and that thought alone left me feeling content that she was in good hands when I couldn't be there.

With Kiba, the young man had been by Mitsuki's side for the entire three weeks. He was there when school was out, stayed until visiting hours were over, and was even there on the weekend. If anything, I was extremely thankful for Kiba because he could be there for Mitsuki when I had to step out and speak with the Hokage.

I have been busy these past weeks. Apart from making sure Mitsuki was healing, I was dealing with the Hokage and Daisuke's arrest while also trying to find a new place for us to live. There was no way I would force Mitsuki to return to her original home, and my current apartment was too small. So, with the help of Guy and Tsume, I was able to find the perfect apartment that would suit me and her. With that said, I purchased new furniture for her and moved most, if not all, of her belongings to her new home.

I hope she was just as excited as I was for her to live with me.

"…Kakashi?"

"Hm?" Lifting my head, I saw Mitsuki staring at me as she waved her only hand before my eyes.

"You went quiet for a moment."

"Sorry, kiddo, just thinking." She smiled brightly. That's something I was impressed with how easily she could smile. I could not believe how much this young girl had been through, and yet she was still smiling. "Are you excited to get out of here?"

Mitsuki nodded quickly. "Geez, it's been three freaking weeks, I deserve to leave already."

"You know why you had to stay an additional week," I stated; she rolled her eyes in response. With all her injuries, Mitsuki developed an infection in her arm that required additional surgery to clean the bone. We finally received the news from the doctor yesterday that she would be discharged today and she couldn't be more excited. "Are you excited to see the new apartment?"

"Yeah…but also nervous."

My eyebrows rose. "Nervous? Why?"

I watched as she fiddled with the edge of her bedsheet. "I mean…I guess I'm just nervous about leaving the hospital. I haven't been outside this room longer than an hour these last few weeks."

Reaching forward, I took hold of her hand and squeezed. "Mitsuki…I promise that nothing else can harm you. Daisuke can no longer hurt you."

Her expression told me she was skeptical; I completely understood why.

"You promise…?" She asked quietly.

Wanting this girl to be reassured, I repeated myself. "I promise."

Smiling softly, she opened her mouth to speak when there was a knock against the door. "Hello! Mitsuki, how're we doing today?" Her doctor entered with a smile on his face and a clipboard in his hand. Her smile grew upon seeing her doctor.

"I'm doing better now that I can leave this place!"

This caused the doctor to laugh. Peering through the papers on his clipboard, he smiled and then dropped them. "Then, it's a good thing I'm here," he stated with a smile. "Your paperwork has gone through. We only need a few signatures from your uncle, and then you can leave."

"Seriously? Finally!" Mitsuki threw her hand into the air. "I can go home!"

Turning in my direction, the doctor handed me his clipboard and pen. I took both as he said, "As I said, all we need is a few signatures."

"Gladly," I responded. Flipping through the pages, I signed the specific line on each before handing the clipboard back to the doctor.

"Now, before I let you go, there are some things you need to know Mitsuki." Nodding, my niece stopped celebrating and gave the doctor her undivided attention. "You need to make an appointment three weeks from now. Only then will we determine if your cast can come off. Now, regarding the academy…"

"Please tell me I can go back."

"You can, but under doctor's orders. You are not allowed to use chakra for the next month. I want to make sure you fully heal before we put any additional strain on your body. Additionally, you are to refrain from any physical activity as well. No running, jumping, or anything strenuous for at least two more weeks."

Mitsuki's face fell at that statement, and I had to hide my laugh behind a gloved hand. My niece sure was comical with her expressions. "…a whole month? But - but why?!"

"We don't want you to put too much strain on your body. You can attend school and participate in learning new hand signs, but no chakra usage."

Her face fell. "But, if I do that…I'll fall behind."

"No, you won't," I interrupted. Grasping her hand, I said, "Once you're all cleared, I'll work with you until you've gotten better than your classmates."

The doctor nodded in agreement. "See? And you'll have a Jōnin teaching you. Most kids your age don't get a chance to work with a Jōnin until they graduate and have been placed on a team."

Mitsuki tilted her head to the side. "Hmm, I guess you're right." She then huffed dramatically. "Fine! I'll wait a whole month."

The doctor sighed in relief and patted my niece on the shoulder. "Your recovery is most important, Mitsuki."

"Anything for you. But only because you've been an awesome doctor!"

That comment left the man smiling brightly. "All right, kiddo. Go home and remember to rest." He and I nodded to each other as he left the room.

Once the door was shut, I grabbed the bag to my left, placing it next to her lap as I stood. "I brought you a change of clothes, thinking you might not want to wear a hospital gown anymore."

She smiled gratefully as she opened the bag to peek inside. "Thank you, Kashi."

"Do you need any help? Want me to grab the nurse?"

"No, I want to see if I can do this myself."

"Gotcha." Placing a hand on her head, I lovingly ruffled her messy hair. Staring at her, I was in awe. My niece was a beautiful young lady who would no doubt grow into a woman who would, hopefully unintentionally, break the hearts of many men. Except Kiba.

I swear, those two will marry each other when they're older, and no one can convince me otherwise.

Watching my niece, I couldn't help but be in disbelief that she looked exactly like my sister. The same shaped eyes, the same nose, even the shape of her ears. The color of her eyes came from her father. However, the one feature she did not get from her parents was the silver of her hair. That came from me, but mainly, her grandfather - my father - Sakumo. It was the same color, it was the same fluffiness, and she even wore it the same way as him - in a ponytail.

He would have loved her. Sakumo would have been thrilled to know he had a grandchild. He would have gone shopping with Mitsuki, taken her to the park, and even picked her up from her first day at the academy. I would bet anything that my father would have taught Mitsuki all that he knew about ninjutsu. He would have trained, taught, and tested the girl to the best of her abilities. Sadly, she won't have that chance; I'm the only family she has left. I guess that responsibility now fell to me. Judging from the conversations I've been having with the Hokage, I might start teaching her next year after all.

There was no truth to that statement. The Hokage was considering her being placed on my team, but I doubt he would go forward with it.

"I'll be outside if you need me."

The moment I closed the door behind me, I instantly summoned a Shadow Clone, holding a finger to my lips. "It's time," I whispered. "Go home and tell the others we're about to leave." Nodding, my Shadow Clone left in a puff of smoke, leaving me alone. And just in time because the door quietly squeaked open. My smile reappeared to see Mitsuki dressed comfortably in sweats and a t-shirt. Her arm that required surgery was placed inside its sling as a precaution to keep the limb somewhat elevated instead of hanging by her side.

"I feel so much better," she stated with another smile.

"Considering you've only been able to wear the hospital gown, I bet." Stepping back into the room, I glanced around. "Anything in here we need to grab?" Mitsuki quickly returned to the bed and grabbed her stuffed dog, her favorite thing in the world. Cuddling it close to her chest, she then grabbed the small bag that contained the minimal amount of her belongings.

As we made our way through the halls, several nurses who had worked with Mitsuki all stopped, said their goodbyes, and gave her a hug.

When we finally reached the entrance, I took hold of Mitsuki's hand and POOF! I transported us across the village to the apartment I'd remodeled to accommodate our needs. For the sake of my niece, this place needed to be perfect for her.

Placing a hand against the door, she peered upward at me. "Is this my new home?"

"Yes, my little Mitsuki. I…didn't think it was a good idea to keep you at your home, and my last apartment was too small, so…"

"I can't wait to see it!"

Exhaling a sigh of relief, I patted her head. Taking the door handle, I opened it to reveal the entranceway, which was dark. Giving Mitsuki room to enter, I followed behind.

"Kakashi? Where are the lights? It's so dark, and…"

"SURPRISE!"

Jumping backward against my frame, Mitsuki almost screamed before I placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. Appearing from the hallway and the couch came Guy, Iruka, Tsume, Kuromaru, Hana, her three ninken, and finally, Kiba and Akamaru. Being the first to step toward her, Tsume engulfed Mitsuki in her arms and held her tightly.

"Oh, my little Mitsuki! I'm so glad you're out of the hospital!"

Happily screaming, Mitsuki cried, giving the woman as tight a hug as she could, "Aunt Tsume!" Stepping back, she peered at everyone before landing on Kiba. "What're you all doing here?"

Walking beside her, Iruka gave her a side hug. "We came to see you, silly."

Next was Guy. "Yeah, dude! We wanted to see your awesome face now that you can be home!"

Hana stepped forward, her three ninken carefully licking Mitsuki's fingers who squealed. "It's so good to see you, Mitsuki."

And last was Kiba. "It was all Kakashi's idea; he kept us in the loop as soon as you could leave."

Turning to me, Mitsuki's eyes grew misty; a single tear fell down her cheek. "Kashi…? You did this?" Before I could even speak, my niece lunged into my arms, circling hers around my waist.
"I…I can't thank you enough!"

Kissing the top of her head, I carefully held her just as tightly, though still mindful of her injuries. "Anything for you, Mitsuki. I wanted you to feel welcomed in your new home."

Behind her, Guy started to cry as snot ran down his face. "Oh, this is just so sweet!"

Clapping the leotard-wearing ninja on the back, Tsume said, "How does lunch sound? Anyone hungry?" Six pairs of heads nodded in unison, while Mitsuki's and Kiba's were more frantic. Chuckling, the female Jōnin said, "Alright, it's almost ready. Kakashi, Kiba, why don't you show Mitsuki her new room?"

We nodded, the young ninja taking his friend's hand and gently dragged her down the hallway. While the three of us went one way, Tsume pulled the others into the kitchen to hastily finish lunch.

Stepping into the hallway, Mitsuki stopped every few feet, staring at the pictures on the walls. "Hey…aren't these…?"

"Your family pictures? Yeah, they are," I said happily, watching her expression.

Still holding her hand, Kiba said with a smile on his face, "We took them from your old house and placed them here!" Seeing the look on her face, Kiba added slowly, "Do you…like it?"

"I love it!" Was her immediate reply as she cleared her vision. "I just…I didn't think I'd see them again."

"We wanted to make sure you had something that reminded you of your parents." She peered upward at me. "They were my family, too." Then I nudged her down the rest of the hallway. Following my direction, Mitsuki stepped forward. I showed her where my room was located, along with the bathroom that separated our rooms. When we reached hers, she opened the door and gasped.

It was an exact replica of her room at her old house.

"K-Kakashi! This is my room!" She took in everything around her and stepped inside. "My bed, the photos - everything is here! How'd you do it?" I merely pointed at Kiba.

"Actually, it was me and mom, mainly mom. We wanted it to be exactly as you had it. We felt too much change would have been…you know…"

"It's…perfect!" Mitsuki quickly engulfed her friend in another hug, holding him tight for at least one full minute. Afterward, she moved to me and gave me another as well. "Uncle Kashi! I can't even begin to thank you…!"

I gave the girl another kiss on her head. "Like I said, anything for you, my little Mitsuki." She smiled so brightly as she gave her room another glance. Moving to the side of her bed, she placed her stuffed dog against the pillows, chuckling as she did so.

"Yo! Lunch is ready, you three!" We heard Tsume call from the kitchen.

"Good. I'm starving!" Kiba cried as Mitsuki nodded.

Walking to the kitchen, the seven of us sat around the newly acquired table and stared at the bountiful amount of food before us. Katsudon is one of Mitsuki's favorite meals, including sides of rice and ramen. Clapping our hands together, we all said, "Itadakimasu!"

It was a wonderful meal.

Iruka told us how Kiba and Mitsuki were doing in school, Hana talked about working at the vet hospital, while Tsume and Guy shared their stories of becoming Chūnin and then Jōnin. The kids asked about my journey of becoming a high-ranked Jōnin, and they were shocked to hear I reached the top tier at age twelve. Mitsuki had heard this story before, but Kiba was flabbergasted, to say the least.

Our afternoon and early evening were filled with enormous amounts of laughter. Eventually, we moved our conversations to play some tabletop card games with Guy and Mitsuki fighting over who would be the ultimate victor. Guy ended up winning in the end with my niece a close second.

Later on in the evening, the kids moved their conversation to the couch where they consecutively fell asleep, Akamaru lying between them. I placed a blanket over their sleeping forms. Back at the table, Tsume held her chin in a hand, ever watching her son and the young girl she considered her niece too.

"You already knew this, Kakashi, but thank you. For everything you have done for Mitsuki."

"This was nothing." I waved the woman off. "I'd move heaven and hell to keep my niece safe."

"And safe she is," commented Iruka. "You know, the kids at the academy will want to know why she's been gone for so long. They've been talking."

My head shook. "Let them talk; they don't need to know the truth. Mitsuki and I have talked about it, and she will say that it was a training accident."

Iruka agreed by nodding. "That's good to know; I'll be able to steer conversations away with that knowledge. When is she allowed to go back to the academy?"

"The doctor said she can return any time. I'll be keeping her home tomorrow as a precaution, but she'll be back in school the day after."

"Anything I should know for when she returns?"

"Yeah," I scratched the back of my head. "She's not allowed to use her chakra for the next month, so she's limited on what she can do. She also can't do anything physical for at least two weeks. She can participate in lectures and learn hand signals, but anything else is off-limits. Whatever you teach, I'll get her caught up quickly."

Smirking, Iruka stated, "I'm not too worried; Mitsuki's been doing really well. She's…Kakashi, she might have gotten some of her geniuses from you." I blinked. Iruka's mentioned this before, but it's still nice to hear that she's becoming a great ninja at her age.

Hana jumped into the conversation. "Is that so?"

The teacher nodded again. "She's at the top of her class, right behind Sasuke Uchiha. That girl has a bright future ahead of her."

"I have no doubt!" Tsume added, taking a long sip of her drink. "She wants nothing more than to be a Jōnin like you, Kakashi, and her parents."

"She's mentioned that to me, too," I stated. Glancing between the four, I asked, "You have any idea what her abilities will be?"

"Not really. It could honestly be anything," Iruka shrugged.

"I'm curious as to what her chakra nature will be," Guy added, rubbing his chin.

"We have much to consider. She is a member of the Ryū clan. They are much like the Uchiha in that they are auspicious while being mysterious," Tsume stated, pondering much about my niece.

Iruka turned to Guy. "Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if she has more than one chakra nature."

"It is rare for a ninja to have more than one," Guy commented, almost as fact.

"Rare, but not impossible."

Guy considered the teacher's words. "Yeah, very true."

Hana hummed, deep in thought. "Is there anyone who can use more than two? It seems like there would be many in Konohagakure who could master at least two." Iruka, Guy, and Tsume all pointed at me; Hana merely sighed. "Why am I not surprised."

I shrugged. I almost mentioned the nature her grandfather could control, wanting to suggest that it ran in the Hatake family, but didn't want to tread down that path.

Sensing a change in the conversation, Tsume asked, "Kakashi, what do you know about the Ryū clan?"

I was slow with my answer, considering what to say. "I know enough, especially what Mitsuki could potentially inherit. But…it's neither here nor there. Her father had the specific skills I'm speaking of, so we'll just have to wait and see if she awakens the same ability."

"And," I watched Guy as he swallowed thickly. "What about her dōjustu?"

Rubbing my head, I sighed heavily, glancing at my niece across the room. "Just like her abilities, we don't know if she'll inherit that either."

Tsume wide-eyed me. "…Daisuke was pretty positive she has it."

"Yeah, well…that asshole can go to hell for all I care." Tsume chuckled heartily, and Guy jammed his fist into my shoulder as if to say, 'good job.' "I won't pretend to hide my disgust for the man. What he did was despicable, and I hope he rots in his cell."

Iruka dropped his head into his hand. "I'm not used to you talking like this, Kakashi."

Slapping the teacher's back, Guy was all smiles. "Even my buddy Kakashi has an evil side." Though I chuckled, my back suddenly stiffened.

I didn't need to hear the knocking against the kitchen window because I saw the movement in the shadows before anything else. The white and red porcelain shone in the darkness as I moved to the window. Opening the glass, I peered outside, the Anbu member nodding at me.

"Do you have a moment?" They asked.

"Is this in regards to Mitsuki?" They nodded. "I'd rather you share what you need inside." The Anbu stared inside to find an additional four sets of eyes staring at them. "They're trustworthy," I added. They nodded again, then disappeared in a heap of smoke, only to reappear standing before me in the kitchen.

"I bring urgent news from the Hokage.," they finally stated after a moment of silence. That garnered the attention of my guests. "He wishes to speak with you straight away, Kakashi."

My head tilted. "Urgent? And it's about Mitsuki?"

The Anbu nodded. "I can't divulge much, but it's about Daisuke Kurosawa." That had the backs of everyone in the room straightened.

"Wait," Iruka whispered, eyes darting to the children. "I thought he was reprimanded?"

"He was," they stated chillingly. Taking a deep breath, they added, "…Daisuke escaped."

The silence was immediate across the five of us. The other four nearly cried out as I just stood there. Escaped? He escaped?! This man was supposed to be guarded by several Anbu members!

"I know what you're thinking, Kakashi. We're all divided about how it happened. I know that the Hokage wants to speak with you as soon as possible."

Exhaling, I nodded. "Return to the Hokage and tell him that I'll be there immediately." The Anbu nodded once more before disappearing in a puff of smoke. The same four sets of eyes turned to me with an incredulous look.

"Kakashi…" Tsume placed a concurring hand over mine as I numbingly sat down.

Patting hers back, I said, "Do you mind watching Mitsuki until I return?"

She nodded. "No need to ask. I'll be here as long as it takes."

Stealing a quick glance at Mitsuki, I sighed before disappearing into my own puff of smoke, leaving my friends behind. It only took a moment, but I soon stood before the Hokage's office. Knocking first, I heard the gruff, "You may enter," before pushing the doors open.

Sitting at his desk near the windows, the Third Hokage slayed away over mountains of paperwork. He lifted his head upon hearing the door The man's eyes grew saddened when he saw me, face flashing something I couldn't ascertain. He waved me toward him so I stepped forward.

"Kakashi, thank you for stopping by. You were contacted by a member of Anbu, correct?"

"Yes, sir."

His eyes fell momentarily. "Ok then…you understand why I have contacted you?"

I inhaled sharply. "Because Daisuke escaped."

The Third Hokage linked his fingers together and tapped his chin, ever thinking. "Unfortunately, that is the case. Several members are looking into the incident, and I've sent a specialized team after him. As of now, Daisuke Kurosawa has been declared a rogue ninja." A low whistle escaped my mouth. "Not only that," the Hoagie continued. "But he managed to kill the two members of Anbu that were guarding his cell."

My lone eye widened at that statement. "He managed to kill two?" The elder nodded. "How…where has he gone?"

"Though we have no idea of his whereabouts, reports from different Anbu that watched over his cell have stated he kept murmuring to himself. Something about needing to meet up with those cloaked in red and black. Has Daisuke ever mentioned anything like that before?"

"No, nothing like that. I have no clue what that could mean."

"Hm, all right." The man sighed. "Anbu will do their best to apprehend and bring him back. He must face the full extent of the law for what he has done." Stroking his beard, he added, "How is Mitsuki faring?"

My small smile returned. "She's doing better and was released from the hospital this afternoon."

I watched as the tension in the Hokage's shoulder visibly disappeared. "That makes me happy to hear. I've been…really worried about her. How has she fared the move into the new apartment?"

"I believe she's excited. It's only been a few hours, so only time will tell. For now, I'm doing everything I can to help her."

The third smiled brightly. "I wouldn't expect anything less from you, Kakashi. It's very clear you love your niece very much."

"We're…each other's last family."

"Yes, yes, you are. Which is also why I've brought you here." Removing himself from the desk, the Hokage walked around until he came to stand before me. "I've had some members suggest I put Mitsuki under protective custody and have her guarded by an Anbu member for the time being." I moved to speak, but he held up a hand. "I've thought it over and have decided not to do so. Mitsuki is a young girl and should be able to enjoy the time she has left before she graduates. I have decided that when the time comes next year when she does graduate, she will be placed on your team. That way, you'll be able to protect and keep an eye on her at all costs."

"But…" My mouth fell slightly. "Wouldn't that be a conflict of interest? Me teaching my niece? Others will surely say that I'm giving special treatment to Mitsuki simply because she is my niece."

A hearty laugh escaped the Hokage's mouth. "So? Let them talk! I will be speaking with Iruka on this so he is aware. But if anyone gives you any problems over it, send them my way." He clasped my arm. "For everything you have done for the village, Kakashi, this is the least I can do to ensure your last remaining family survives."

Still in slight shock at the conversation, I could only nod. However, there was one question I had to ask. "Lord Third, if I may…what am I to do if Mitsuki is granted her kekkei genkai?"

He chuckled some more. "Which one? At least two run through her blood, aren't there?"

Nodding, I had to remind myself that, of course, the Hokage would know that about Mitsuki's parents as they worked closely with the Third before they died. "I'm talking about her dōjutsu, the Ketsuryūgan. It doesn't matter whether she'll inherit it, but when."

"Ah, I see. Well…" The elder returned to his desk. "The way I see it is that we can pretend it doesn't exist or help the girl hone her skill. I mean, as born into the Ryū clan, it is her birthright, is it not?"

I pocketed my hands, feeling that's what he would say. "I just wanted to make sure. There have been accounts of members from the Ryū clan using their dōjutus in ways they should not have."

"I doubt Mitsuki will be one of those individuals who stray from the correct path. If anything, I believe Mitsuki will use her abilities to help others rather than be selfish. If she inherits the kekkei genkai from her mother, I know she will use that to help others."

"That is true. But you know, as well as I do, just because a kekkei genkai runs in a family doesn't mean that the next individual will inherit them. But…" I swallowed. "I hope my niece does. She deserves to have something to remember her parents by."

Something glinted in the Hokage's eyes. "I think so, too." He then shook his head, seemingly lost in thought for a moment. "I digress. Are there any concerns you have regarding Mitsuki or the situation?"

"Not as this time, no. I trust you'll do everything possible to keep her safe inside the village, Lord Third."

"Don't forget about yourself, Kakashi. She has you on her side, and we all know nothing can bring you down."

That made me scoff. "I'm not invincible."

"Hmm, maybe not." The Hokage stroked his beard. "But to protect your niece, you might have to be." Jotting down a quick note on his desk, the third glanced at me and smiled. "Thank you for your time, Kakashi. This might not have been the news you wanted to hear, but at least we have something planned to keep the girl safe."

I bowed my head out of respect for my elder. "You have always considered the safety of the citizens of Konohagakure. So I must thank you, Lord Third."

He waved off my statement. "So…now that Mitsuki is out of the hospital, when can she return to the academy?"

"She'll be back in two days, though her doctor has ordered her to avoid using her chakra."

"Oh, I bet she's not a fan of that."

"Absolutely not. She tried arguing with the doctor earlier. In the end, she only agreed to the doctor's orders after I told her I would personally train her on anything she misses over the next month."

"I am sure she will enjoy her time with you." Glancing at the time, the Hokage sighed. "Well, young man, I have kept you long enough. Please return home and give Mitsuki my condolences, saying that she continues to have a swift recovery."

"Yeah, Hokage, thank you. Have a good night."

Waving off the elder, I left the Hokage office and stood outside the front doors, my head tilting to the evening sky, searching for something I couldn't see. Frankly, I was overwhelmed with the information I received. Daisuke had escaped, killing two Anbu to do so. This did not bode well for keeping Mitsuki safe, but there were procedures in place that would help. And the Lord Third was right that she had me. Having resigned from being an Anbu member allowed me to keep an eye on Mitsuki and news around the village of Daisuke.

Until my niece graduates next year, I will sit back and lie in waiting. I plan on listening for rumors, any and everything that would allow me and the rest of the Konohagakure ninjas to capture her stepfather. I would not rest until that man has been tried and placed behind bars. Or, rather, if he were to die.

I didn't like the notion of wanting death cast upon another person, but for this man, I wish for him to suffer a thousand painful deaths.

Taking slow breaths, I calmed myself. Nothing would change about getting so worked up as there was nothing I could do. I held no power to change the situation. The only part I could play was reinstating with Anbu and going after Daisuke myself. But I had my niece to consider. Her safety now came first.

Deciding to cool off my anxiety, I walked back to the apartment, taking my time as I strolled through the village. Not even the comfort I received from the Icha Icha would help.

If I had to guess, I'd say that I had been gone for about an hour, maybe longer. It had been dark for some time; the stars above shone brightly, guiding me to our new home. I was thankful Mitsuki seemed happy about the apartment. I had been nervous these past three weeks, thinking I had crossed a line in moving her from the home she grew up into someplace she had not seen before. I assumed it would still take her some time to adjust; I just wanted her to feel safe, that it was a place she could now call home.

MITSUKI

Kakashi kept his promise. He said that two days after being released from the hospital, I could return to the academy. Well, two days later, I was walking to school with Uncle Kakashi by my side.

We left our new home on the earlier side to grab some breakfast before walking to the academy. Doing certain things with my hand and arm in a cast was still hard. Technically, I didn't have to wear my sling, but Kakashi had asked me to wear it for several more days while I got used to returning to school. I obliged, of course, wanting to appease my uncle while proving that I would do what was necessary to heal as best as possible.

We passed by several people who were in my class; they waved and questioned where I had been but let me be. I wasn't necessarily close to these people, but that was ok. Outside of my friendship with Kiba, I was more acquainted with the others at school rather than being their friend. But that made me question next year and how the Genin teams would be established once we graduated. Then, I would have to become friends with my teammates as we were expected to work together as thoroughly as possible while also finishing the mission as expected. I shrugged, feeling confident that I would be a part of a strong team. But I still wondered who those teammates would be.

Would Kiba be one of them?

Once we reached the front of the academy, Kakashi dropped to one knee and placed a hand on my shoulder. "Will you be alright today?"

I nodded, eager to learn more about being a ninja. "I'm excited to be back!"

He smiled through his mask. "I'm glad to hear that. And remember: what aren't you supposed to use?"

"My chakra," I said with a dramatic eye roll.

"Good," Kakashi said. "You've been listening. Iruka-sensei is aware of the situation and will have you be on light duty until we go back and see your doctor."

"I hope these next few weeks go by fast," I mumbled to myself. "I don't wanna fall behind."

"And you won't." He squeezed my shoulder. "Once the doctor gives you the clear, you'll have me as a teacher until you're back on your feet."

I eyed him curiously. "And you promise to teach me a really cool move?"

He nodded, a touch of happiness coating his cheeks. "The best move ever. One that you can brag about to Kiba."

"Alright!" The bell inside the building suddenly rang, giving us several minutes to reach the classroom. There were other kids running into the building, and I knew I had to hurry. Kissing Kakashi on the cheek, I ran into the building, yelling over my shoulder, "Bye, Kakashi! See you after school!" He quickly waved but was gone in a flash of smoke before I entered the academy doors.

I was careful as I maneuvered through the old building. Quickly, I went upstairs to my classroom to find the door open as I entered. When I stepped inside the doorway, I could hear several people scream my name. "MITSUKI!" Numerous people suddenly bombarded me by the door, and I swiveled my head back and forth, trying to discern all the people near me.

"Where have you been?!"

"We heard you got seriously hurt!"

"Are you ok? You've been gone a long time."

"We're surprised you returned."

And finally, I heard, "We thought you died."

Someone smacked the person who started the last comment as I snickered. Leave it to a bunch of eleven-year-olds to assume a friend had died simply because they hadn't been to school in three weeks. Rubbing the back of my neck, I laughed. "Sorry guys, I was in the hospital."

Choji, always eating a bag of chips, stepped forward. "The hospital? How bad were you hurt?"

Shikamaru rolled his eyes at his friend. "You dummy, can't you see her arms in a sling?"

I held up my hand to speak, but Sakura stepped forward. "Come on, guys, let her speak!"

It was then ten of my classmates turned to stare at me. Swallowing, I said, "Yeah, I, um…I was in an accident several weeks ago. Got taken to the hospital to treat my injuries." In the background, I could see Sasuke watching, but he didn't get up or say anything to me.

"An accident? How long were you in the hospital?" Someone asked.

"Uh…almost the entire time." The group started talking amongst themselves. I was getting a little uncomfortable. Kakashi and I agreed that I would tell my friends that it was a training accident, explaining that my uncle didn't want me to give specifics. The idea made things easier. How many eleven-year-olds wanted to tell their friends that they almost died because their stepfather attacked them? I didn't.

That was something else that had been on my mind these past weeks: the fact that I almost died. Kiba was with me one day when I questioned what injuries I sustained. Not knowing how to answer, he handed me my medical chart at the end of the bed, and I read the document, unsure how to feel. I didn't think I had suffered such injuries, but when I asked Kakashi about it later, he confirmed, stating that if he hadn't taken me to the hospital when he had, my outcome could've been that much worse.

But…to have almost died? I didn't…I've never thought of the aspect of me dying. Granted, I know the inevitable happens to everyone, but no one suspects it'll happen or when. The concept sent uncomfortable shivers running down my spine as I recalled these last three weeks. I had been in so much pain. From the stab wound in my abdomen to the dozens of stitches in my head. Even my arm needed to have additional surgery because it wasn't healing right, and I incurred an infection.

Regardless, I had survived. I was alive and back in my academy classroom, surrounded by people who cared and were excited that I was back.

People were still asking me questions, but I just stared blankly at them, unsure how to answer or even if I wanted to.

What I was curious about was why no one had asked about the stitches in my face. I didn't have to wear a bandage, but the stitches running across my nose could visibly be seen. Maybe Iruka told them not to ask. If he did, I was thankful. That was something I didn't want to remember.

"Guys, c'mon! Leave Mitsuki alone." Kiba stepped forward with Akamaru ever present inside his jacket. Nudging his shoulder with mine, he then said, "She's back; let's just be thankful for that. Give her some time to breathe and heal." The others murmured around us as they glanced at each other, considering Kiba's words. Ino was about to ask something when Iruka entered the classroom, clearing his throat to gain our attention.

"Hey, what's all the commotion? Shouldn't you guys be in your seats?"

"But Iruka-sensei! Mitsuki's back!" Sakura stated as she pointed at me.

"W-we just wanted to w-welcome her back," Hinata said very quietly, though I shot her a thankful smile.

Iruka eyed me through the crowd and smiled as well. "I am very thankful you are back, Mitsuki. You have been missed. Are you ready to begin the lesson?"

"Yes, sir!" I answered happily.

He then turned to the rest of the class. "You heard her. Now, back to your seats."

Some of the students groaned, but they listened to our sensei as they moved around the classroom. I claimed my seat by the window, nodding to Sakura and Hinata, who sat in the same row.

The day passed by as expected. Iruka-sensei lectured about the importance of being a dutiful ninja while also reviewing the will of fire that encompasses all the citizens that live within Konohagakure. I enjoyed listening and taking notes when I could, but then came the practical application of the ninjutsu they learned last week. Of course, I hadn't been there and had to sit and watch my classmates as they demonstrated their mastery. I was saddened that I couldn't participate.

Hinata had just returned from demonstrating her ninjutsu when she tilted her head. "You're not g-going up there, Mitsuki?"

I shook my head. "No, I'm not allowed to use my chakra until I go back and see my doctor."

"You can't use your chakra?" Sakura sat down and eyed me curiously. "How come?"

Pointing to my arm in the sling, I answered, "Because I had two surgeries to fix this. It's more of a precaution than anything."

Her face scrunched as if she had eaten something sour. "That stinks." I sighed, not wanting to say much more after that.

Lunch was next; Kiba and I ate our meal together as his other friends surrounded us, but that ended too quickly, and we returned to the classroom. Iruka spent some time lecturing the class on past lessons and testing his students to see how well their memory was. Considering I could not partake in the physical aspects of the classroom, Iruka-sensei called on me frequently, still wanting me to participate. I didn't mind. I liked demonstrating what I knew. It was something I knew my uncle would be proud of.

During the last hour of class, Iruka took everyone outside and instructed the students to run twenty laps, stating that the first to finish would receive a treat. The class groaned but set off, all running around the track, trying to finish so they could enjoy the rest of their afternoon and earn that supposed treat. Knowing I couldn't do anything but stare, I sat on the bench under the shade, watching Iruka as he watched his students.

I don't know how long I sat there, but there was a gentle breeze. What made it better was that every time Kiba ran by, he waved, so I waved back with a giant smile. The thought left me feeling special that I had this friendship with Kiba. I would not have survived these last three weeks without him and Akamaru.

Of course, I counted Uncle Kakashi, but he was part of the family, so he was a given.

Kiba was there every single day after school and even visited me on the weekends. Some days, he brought me snacks; some days, he brought games for us to play; and some days, we talked about what was happening at the academy. I woke up in the hospital, content that my stay would be better with each day because I knew I'd have company. The days passed, and before I knew it, I was being discharged, preparing to go home to celebrate and -

"Hey."

Blinking, I glanced to my side to find Sasuke sitting beside me, barely a sweat coating his face. My attention fell to find a candy bar in his hands. Pointing at it, I said, "Was that your reward for finishing first?"

He nodded, hiding it in my direction. "You want it?"

"Oh, no! I can't take that from you. You did all the work."

"Just take it," the boy shook his head. "I don't want it." Weighing my options, I reached forward and took it, seemingly happy that I now had the treat. I opened the wrapper and took a bite when Sasuke suddenly said, "How does it feel being at school but unable to do anything?"

I eyeballed him, taking more bites of the chocolate. "Eh, not bad; I missed school. Definitely beats being in the hospital for three weeks straight."

I could see Sasuke eye my sling. "So…you really had two surgeries to fix that thing?"

"Mhm, all because I fell." Which wasn't a lie. "Because I fell, the bone broke through my skin, so…only surgery could fix the problem."

"But two?"

"I…my arm became infected, and the metal wasn't sitting right in my bone, so they had to fix it. But last I checked, it was doing better. I go see my doctor in a few weeks, and he said that'll determine when the cast can be removed."

"That's good."

I huffed. If there was one annoying characteristic about Sasuke, it was that he was limited in his wording. But that was perfectly fine; he was the way he was, and surprisingly, I didn't want to change that about him. He didn't have to talk with me or give me his chocolate, but he did, and I was thankful.

Lifting my head to the others, I noticed that more individuals had finished their laps while a few were still running. In the corner opposite of me, I could see several girls, Ino and Sakura included, whispering and talking amongst themselves as they pointed in my direction. I didn't know what they could be talking about. I was talking with Sasuke; was that a crime? Did I not have the right to do so?

Before I knew it, I finished the candy bar. Licking my lips, I turned to Sasuke and smiled. "That was very sweet of you for giving that to me, Sasuke. Thank you."

He rolled his eyes, but I swore I could see a tiny smile on his face. "I just felt bad for you. Don't think too hard about it."

"Oh. Well, ok!" I giggled. The bell echoed across the open yard, and both Sasuke and I glanced upward. In the distance, Iruka was giving one last small lecture before we released the rest of us so we could be on our merry way. I could see Kiba walk in my direction, waving at me as Akamaru bounced at his heels. Seeing my friend walk in my direction, Sasuke stood and waved.

"Later, Mitsuki."

"Bye, Sasuke!"

Kiba arrived several seconds later, turning his back to glance at Sasuke as they walked by each other. Pointing a thumb behind him, Kiba asked, "You talking with Sasuke this entire time?"

"Yeah. He finished first and then sat down. We were kinda talking the entire time."

He nodded. "A good conversation?"

I contemplated my answer: "Mm, yeah, I guess so. He's quiet, so it was mostly me, but that's okay."

Kiba hummed, reaching down to scratch Akamaru's ears. "You know…" He stood to his full height. "Some of the girls were talking about you."

"I…what?" I bit my fingernail, considering Kiba's words. "What do you mean?"

"I think it's because they saw you talking to Sasuke."

Glancing behind Kiba to see Sasuke's back as he walked off, I scrunched my face in annoyance. "All because I was talking to him?"

"Seems that way."

Heaving a sigh, I stood. There was no point in waddling around with information like that. I…guess you could say Sasuke and I were friends? We've had conversations in the past, and he's been fairly friendly toward me. Who knows. Maybe we'll be placed on the same team next year. Only time will tell. Until then, I would continue to be nice, considering he hasn't done anything toward me to warrant a change in my attitude.

We moved to leave the academy, and I waved goodbye to Iruka, who was all smiles. As we left through the large double doors, I bent down and scooped Akamaru into my arms. I was about to speak when Kiba beat me. "Did you have a good day being on the sidelines?"

"It wasn't bad. It sucked that I couldn't participate or demonstrate what I know, but Iruka-sensei still included me in the lecture session, so that was nice."

Kiba rubbed the top of my head. "You've worried a lot of people these last few weeks."

I frowned at his actions. "Yeah, well, not like I wanted it to happen," I pouted. Stopping in his tracks, Kiba gripped my arm, pulling me back.

"That's not what I meant. I'd never wish for something like that to happen to you again, and you know that." He sighed. "Almost everyone in the class bombarded me daily, asking questions about you. It was hard because there wasn't much I could tell them without giving too much away."

"I appreciate that, I really do." I smiled, and he returned the gesture. Opening my mouth to speak, I promptly shut it as I glanced over Kiba's shoulder to see his sister approaching us. "Hey, it's Hana."

"Hm?" He turned around just as she appeared by his side. "Hey, sis. You're off already?"

"I'm running an errand for another doctor real quick." Hana, just like Kiba, rubbed the top of my head, and I growled, using my only good hand to set hers away. "Hey, Mitsuki! You feeling good today? Kiba said you were able to go back to school."

"I mean…it was a little boring because I couldn't participate in almost anything they did, but still. It was great to be back; I missed it."

She sighed. "That's good to hear. I just wish your love for school would eventually rub off on this knucklehead." Hana gently punched her brother in the arm who feigned to be hurt.

"Ouch!" He hissed menacingly.

But Hana only rolled her eyes. "You're weird. Oh! I'm here for a reason. Mom needs you for something."

"Seriously?" He groaned, catching my eye. "But…Mitsuki and I were going to do something together!"

She raised an eyebrow. "And what were you planning to do with Mitsuki?" Not sure how to answer, Kiba spared me a look, silently asking for me to say something - anything. I knew he did not want to go run errands with his mom.

Wanting to be evil, I said, "We haven't discussed that far ahead. So, technically, we don't have plans." I smirked at my best friend.

He caught on quickly. "Oh, you're so evil," he muttered with a smile.

"Good!" Hana clapped her hands. "Then you're free! C'mon, you don't want to keep mom waiting."

"Ugh, fine." Kiba sighed. Reaching forward, he gave me a side hug before following his sister. "Get some rest, Tsuki!" He called out as they disappeared down the road.

Suddenly, alone, I was left with a conundrum. Since I couldn't use my chakra, going to the training grounds was out of the question. I didn't want to go home, and - wait! I didn't want to go home. Why not?

And then I realized. I no longer shared a home with Daisuke; I had no reason not to want to go home. He wouldn't be there, so I didn't have to be scared to see him. He was locked away, so far away from me that I no longer had to worry.

Because I now lived with Kakashi.

That thought left me smiling. I had only lived with my uncle for two days, but the effect was a complete turnaround. I looked forward to being home. Living with my uncle was different, and I could tell he was still trying to figure out how to take care of me, but he was trying. There were certain days that Daisuke didn't even want to try, but Kakashi was different. He's cooking my favorite meals to help me relax, and he's ensuring I'm still healing appropriately. He even walked me to school! I hadn't had that experience since both my parents were alive.

"Yo, Mitsuki!"

Curious about who was calling me, I turned to see Naruto running in my direction; I smiled widely.

I knew how the other children and adults treated my ninja friend, and I didn't understand why. He was a normal child who wanted nothing more than to be a top ninja. Yeah, he could be obnoxious, loud, and a clown at times, but I knew he had a good heart. He was always trying his best and worked extremely hard to train himself in both mind and spirit. I often saw him at the training grounds, sometimes until nightfall, working endlessly to perfect a new jutsu we had learned that day. I respected my friend.

Because that's what he was. Naruto Uzumaki was my friend, and I refused to treat him like others.

Waving, I walked up to Naruto. "Hi! How're you, Naruto?"

"Oh, you know, school was kinda boring, but we survived!" He seemed a little on edge, bouncing from one foot to the other. "Hey, I've been meaning to ask…are you alright?"

"Hm?" I tilted my head, slightly confused. Why wouldn't I be?" He pointed at my arm. "This? Yeah, I'm okay. At least, for the most part."

"But…" He seemed apprehensive as if he didn't want to discuss the subject. "I noticed you've also been holding your side at times. Are you hurt outside of your arm?"

I blinked, surprised he had caught those moments. He was right. The area around the stab wound was sore as it was still healing. The outside wound may have healed, but the inside muscles, according to the doctor, might take several more weeks to heal. I could feel the soreness on occasion today, which caught me by surprise. Also, I thought no one had been looking at the times I held my side.

I felt happy that Naruto had seen me, especially since he was taking the time to see if I was okay. Giving him the biggest smile I could, I nodded. "Honestly…I'm hurt a little all over. I still have some nasty bruises, but those should be clearing soon. But you're right. I did hurt my side, and then there's my arm to consider. I don't know if you heard, but I had to have two surgeries to fix it."

Naruto whistled as he stared at my arm. "Dang, that must've hurt. How long until you can get the cast removed?"

"Mmm, probably not for another few weeks. But it's okay! I'm kind of used to it, but my uncle says that I might be able to stop using it in a few days. He's being a little cautious, what with me returning to school and all that. He wants me to be careful." Without realizing it, I found that we started walking. I didn't know where we were going, just that we were walking in a random location away from the school. I started thinking about my uncle and where we were supposed to meet, but then I remembered Kakashi saying that he had a meeting with the Hokage and that it might take some time before he saw me that night. My stomach started to rumble, so I glanced at Naruto. "Hey, are you hungry?"

"Oh, yeah! I could totally eat something right now!"

"Wanna go get some ramen with me?"

He nodded enthusiastically. "Hell yeah! Oh! I know this great ramen place. C'mon!" He started to run, but then I called his name. Naruto suddenly remembered that I wasn't to perform any physical activity. Returning to my side, we walked toward the ramen shop, arriving only after a few minutes of waking.

"Ichiraku Ramen," I read the name aloud.

"This place is my favorite! Have you been here before?"

"No, can't say that I have." Stepping through the front curtains, I saw the empty counter, probably because it wasn't dinner time. The owner lifted his head and smiled at his customers.

"Why, if it isn't Naruto! How've you been, kid?"

"Good! My friend and I just finished school, and we were hungry! Can we get two bowls, please?!" The owner nodded in my direction to see if that was all right, to which I returned the gesture. I was fairly open to most ramen options, and if Naruto claimed theirs was the best, I was willing to try.

So, we sat at the counter and talked. Naruto continued to press about my injuries, and I told him as little information as possible without going into details. I didn't mind talking about it, but I was continuously reminded of that night. I just wanted to forget what happened, to forget the way Daisuke stared at me as he tried to carve out my eyes.

Still, I didn't mind. Sitting here with Naruto was relaxing, and I was glad I considered him to be my friend. Naruto was friendly, and it was heartwarming to see that he just wanted to connect with others. I could tell he craved friendship, wanting nothing more than to be recognized for his efforts.

We discussed everything, from school to training to whatever topic we wanted to discuss. At one point, Naruto asked about my friendship with Kiba, and I had to explain how we had been friends since birth and that our mothers had been best friends since they were little as well.

"Earlier you mentioned your uncle was helping you. Do you not live with your parents?"

I blanched slightly. Talking about my parents was difficult, but I had to be thankful I wasn't in Naruto's shoes. He has had no parents since…well, forever. I, at least, had been graced with their presence, even if it was for a short while. "Well…" I started. "My parents were killed in action. My dad passed about four years ago, and my mother died last year."

"Oh…" His face fell. "I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bring up a sad memory."

I rubbed his shoulder. "Don't be. I can't be sad forever that they're gone. I just need to be thankful for the memories I have of them. But I have my uncle. He's taking care of me now, and he's awesome."

"He sounds awesome. Could I meet him someday?"

"Maybe," I said. "He's kind of a private person, but if he wants to, I'm certain he'd like you, Naruto."

My friend's eyes seemed to glow at that. "Man, I sure hope so." Taking a deep breath, I noticed the time and realized that Kakashi might be home and that I should head in that direction.

Patting Naruto's shoulder, I said, "Hey, I actually have to head home. Are you gonna be alright by yourself?"

I could see his face fall, but he quickly replaced it with a smile. The change in expression hurt my heart. "I'll be alright! I'll order another bowl of ramen. Iruka-sensei said he'd join me soon so I'll have some company."

"Good, I like that." Pulling out my coin purse, I placed the appropriate amount on the counter, including Naruto's first and second bowls.

"Hey, hey! Why're you paying?! I wanted to pay for you!"

I smiled gently. "I'm the one who asked if you wanted to hear. Besides, you can pay for the next one!"

His eyes lit up. "You mean it? You'll eat ramen with me again?"

"Of course! You are my friend, after all, Naruto." I waved goodbye to the owner behind the counter and left, breathing deeply as the cool night air brushed against my sin. I walked only for several minutes when someone called my name from behind.

"Mitsuki!"

Turning, I saw Kakashi walking in my direction. "Uncle Kakashi!" He made his way toward him, and I hugged him tightly.

"Where've you been? You weren't at home, and I've been looking for you everywhere."

That statement left me feeling guilty. "I-I'm sorry." I suddenly remembered the way Daisuke would act whenever I was home late. I expected to be hit by my uncle, but when I opened my eyes, I found that he was staring at me gently.

He seemed to understand my situation. "I'm not your stepfather, Mitsuki. I won't hurt you."

My head fell slightly, ashamed of thinking that I had looped my uncle and stepfather into the same pool. "I-I'm sorry. It's just…Daisuke would be so upset if I came home after my curfew."

Kakashi pulled me into another hug, kissing my head. "We need to discuss that, but I trust you, Mitsuki. Never forget that. Now, how about we head home? How does ramen sound for dinner? I thought something simple would be nice."

"Hehe," I giggled, considering where I had been for the past hour. "That sounds good. I could go for another bowl!"

He eyed me curiously through his one eye. "Another bowl? Just where have you been?"

"Oh! Naruto and I went to Ichiraku Ramen after school and had some! That's why I was out so late…we were talking the entire time."

My uncle's expression didn't change, but his eyes seemed to smile. "Are you friends with Naruto?"

"Yes!" I muttered, remembering how the rest of the village reacted to him. "Is that okay?"

He stopped, staring at me from his taller height. "And why wouldn't it be?"

"C'mon, you've seen how the rest of the village treats him! They act like he's trash, and I don't like it!" To add emphasis, I stomped my foot in annoyance.

But Kakashi merely rubbed the top of my head in affection. "If it makes you feel better, I personally have no hard feelings against the boy. I agree that the rest of the village… treats him differently, and I think that's wrong. I'm very proud of how you treat him, Mitsuki."

That caught me by surprise. He was on my side? "You do?"

"Yeah. Everybody needs a friend in their life. If you consider Naruto to be your friend, don't ever let that go. I think you're just what he needs." Beginning to walk again, he grabbed my spare hand and squeezed. "Now, how about that ramen? You said you're still hungry, right?"

"Very!"

So, we walked home; Kakashi asked me about my first day back at the academy, and I eagerly explained how boring it was but that it was nice to be back. He listened intently the entire time, which was nice because I felt heard. I liked how Kakashi took an interest in what I was doing and wanted to be a part of my life. It was nice knowing I had someone on my side. I didn't know what would happen from here, but I was ready to tackle my future. With Kakashi by my side, Kiba, Hana, and Tsume, I knew that I could conquer whatever demons lay before me. I knew there would be more. There might possibly be more difficult demons I'd have to face outside of Daisuke, but I was ready.

I was ready to become a full-fledged ninja, just like my family before me. I wanted to make them proud.
