Little Finn is my original character, but I don't own CSI.

This was inspired by a vacation I took. I saw a father and son fishing on the beach, and thought it would make a good Nick and Finn story. And I thought it would be a good chance for Nick to think about someone special to both of them. Anyway, here's what I came up with. I hope you enjoy... And pretty please review!

Nick loved when he could go to a conference and bring his son Finn. Normally he'd leave Finn with Greg and Morgan or the Robbins. But when Nick had a chance to attend a conference in Florida and could bring Finn, he jumped at the chance. So one morning, Nick and Finn were on the beach and Nick was teaching his son to fish.

Finn gazed out at the water. "Dad, do you think I'll catch a shark?"

"No," Nick said with a warm smile as he tied the lure on the hook. "But you might catch something." He gave the fishing pole to Finn. "You ready?"

"Yeah!"

Nick helped Finn cast the line in the water. He smiled with love at the little boy who was his whole world. He watched as Finn looked out in the water and wondered if he'd catch a fish.

He couldn't help but think about when he was a little boy and went fishing with his father. Nick smiled thoughtfully as he remembered going to the lake with his father and spending time trying to catch fish. Nick realized he didn't remember catching many fish, but he did remember just spending time with his father. And now he was the dad spending time with his son. Nick couldn't help but smile sadly as he thought of his father and how much Finn loved him.

Finn looked at his father and wondered why he looked a little sad. "You okay, dad?"

Nick smiled reassuringly and cleared his throat. "Yeah. I was just thinking."

"Bout what?" Finn asked.

Sighing softly, Nick said, "The last time I went fishing was when I was about your age. Your Paw Paw taught me to fish."

"He did?"

"Yeah," Nick said as he helped Finn with his fishing pole. "Your Paw Paw taught me how to fish, just like I'm showing you."

Finn frowned. "I miss Paw Paw."

"Me too," Nick said with a deep sigh. A year ago, a couple of weeks after Christmas, Nick's brother called with the news that his father had passed away. As much as he missed him, Nick was so grateful he and Finn were able to go to Dallas for the holidays and spend one last Christmas with Roger.

"Dad," Finn asked. "Did you and Paw Paw catch a lot of fish?"

Nick chuckled softly. "No, we didn't. But I loved just spending time with my dad." He smiled softly at Finn. "And I love spending time with you."

Finn smiled. "So Paw Paw would be happy we're fishing?"

"He'd love this," Nick said with a smile. "If he were here, he'd be showing you how to cast your line and he'd help you catch a fish."

Finn's face brightened. "Cool!"

Just then, Finn felt a tug on his line. He gasped. "I got one!"

"Reel it in," Nick said as he grabbed his phone to get a video. "You got this."

Dad, I got it!" Finn said as he reeled in his catch.

Nick noticed a blue heron walking, but his attention was on Finn. "Come on, Finney," Nick said as he filmed his son.

Finn pulled the fish up and was bouncing with joy. "I caught it! Dad, I got a fish!"

"Yeah," Nick said with pride. "Finney's first fish!"

As soon as Nick got pictures, the bird Nick noticed hopped over and took the fish.

"No!" Finn shouted.

"Uh-oh!" Nick said.

Finn tried to chase the bird, but it flew away with the fish.

"Finney, it's okay," Nick assured him.

"My fish!" Finn shouted.

"It's okay," Nick assured him. "I got pictures and video. You want to try again?"

"Can we?" Finn asked.

"Sure."

Nick helped Finn tie another lure on his hook. "You know," Nick said, "Your Paw Paw loved a good fish story."

"Huh?"

"Well, I got proof that you caught a good fish. And you know what?" Finn shook his head. Nick said, "Your Paw Paw is probably smiling down on you right now."

"Yeah?"

"Absolutely! He'd be so proud of his grandson."

That brought a soft smile to Finn's face. "Dad, do you think I'll catch another fish?"

Nick helped Finn cast his line again. "Maybe so. And if you don't, you could always do what your Paw Paw did when we didn't catch anything and order pizza."

Finn grinned. "Can we get fish and pizza?"

Nick smiled, knowing how much Finn liked pizza. We'll see."

They spent the morning fishing, swimming and just spending time together. To Nick and Finn, it was a wonderful time.
