Shaggy and Scooby stared longingly at the TV screen they were watching, wearing a security uniform in the middle of an airport. "We miss you too Daphne." Shaggy said in a small voice, loud enough for only Scooby to hear. He whimpered in agreement. Even though they were happy to have some time away from being scared and running from monsters at first, the pair really missed solving mysteries with the rest of the gang. Especially since their current job was not as fun. "HEY! Get back to work you two!" Shaggy and Scooby turned around to find their boss, a tall, mean looking blonde guy with a moustache and glasses glaring at them. "Uh we're right on it Boss-man sir!" Shaggy saluted and he and Scooby rushed away.
"Got something Scoob?" Shaggy asked, holding onto Scooby's leash as they walked up and down customs searching luggage. Scooby sniffed along the revolving luggage, making sure to check all of them with his nose. "Reah!" He pointed his body towards a burnt-orange coloured suitcase with a brown leather handle. Shaggy heaved it from the rotator and placed it on the floor to open it. Scooby nose dived into the case, returning his face to reveal a pair of socks balancing on his nose. "No offence buddy, but I think your nose is losing its touch!" Shaggy laughed hysterically, causing Scooby to scowl in return. "Ruh roh." He said, turning his attention back to the case. He lifted out a wheel of some type of cheese and crossed his front legs. "Rold you so."
"Wow sneaky, but they can't fool your nose! Come on, let's go check it in Scooby."
In the contraband room, Shaggy and Scooby lay down on the ground after demolishing a good 75% of the food they had recovered from luggage that day. Shaggy reached over to the table to eat the final piece of cheese but was interrupted by the door slamming open. "Oh hi boss." The man from earlier glanced over to Shaggy, then Scooby, then back to Shaggy. "You ate all the contraband!" he yelled, rubbing his eyes in disbelief. "Not true. There's still a couple of Gorgonzolas left!"
"You're a couple of Gorgonzolas! YOURE FIRED!"
"Geez Scoob, like what a grouch! Looks like we're unemployed again." Shaggy said, slumping to one of the seats in the airport.
"Reah runemployed." Scooby repeated, whimpering as he sat beside his friend.
"So what if this was the greatest job we could get. So what if we starve. Turn to skin and bones." Shaggy said, being over-dramatic. Scooby jumped to his paws.
"Do rou rear that?"
"Oh like yeah that's my phone." Shaggy pulled out his phone from his trouser pocket and hit the answer button on the screen. "Hello? Freddie! We just saw you and Daph on TV! Busy? Nah, Scoob and I were thinking of taking some time off. Yeah. Yeah!"
"Number 23, The Vampire Village? Got it. 24 The Creepy Clown Town, got it. 25 Menace at Mummy Manor, got it. Yes, I'll hold them until Tuesday, oh two weeks from Tuesday that's fine. See you then- bye." Velma sighed as she hung up the phone. She was half way up a ladder in her bookstore, gathering the books she had just discussed with a customer on the phone. "Solving mysteries was a lot more fun than selling them." She said out loud, even though she was alone in the store. She had opened the store after the gang separated. It was great at first, she loved seeing the enthusiastic bookworms like herself come in and browse the vast collection of mystery books she had to offer. Business had been pretty slow the past couple of weeks and Velma had been reminiscing about the gang's best mysteries. She too had been watching Daphne on TV and it only made her miss them more. Velma was snapped out of her thoughts by the phone ringing by the desk. She climbed down the ladder and made her way over. "I guess business is picking up again."
"Hello, Mystery Inc Bookshop. Freddie! No way I was just thinking about you guys. Jinkies really? I'm in!"
Fred pulled up to Daphne's house in what used to be the Mystery Machine, but now the letters were covered with a huge blue banner reading 'Coast to Coast with Daphne Blake.' Daphne herself was stood on the corner, tapping her foot impatiently which Fred immediately noticed. "Sorry I'm late Daph, the traffic was murder." He apologised, stepping out to help her with her dozen purple suitcases and bags she carried every time they went on a trip. "Is this everything?"
"Uh-huh." She replied, watching Fred begin to pick up her luggage.
"Got the maps?"
"Yeah."
"Are you sure you haven't forgotten anything?" Fred pressed, putting the bags down at the back doors of the van, Daphne close behind.
"Fred! What is with you? Yes I'm sure I'm sure." Daphne snapped, she had become much more of a diva since she got her own show which Fred often got the end of her moods. "Well then…" Fred began, stopping mid sentence to open the doors.
"SURPRISE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAPHNE!" the gang screamed in unison as the doors revealed none other than Velma, Shaggy and Scooby in the back of the van with party hats and confetti. The three of them hopped out to join Daphne and Fred outside. Daphne was beaming with delight at seeing her friends. "Gosh, its so great to see you all! I've been working so hard I guess I forgot my own birthday!" She said, taking turns to hug each of them.
"I hope you don't mind but I asked the gang to come along whilst we shoot the next season of the show." Fred explained, loading the van up with Daphne's bags. She ran over to him and threw her arms around his neck, hugging him tight. "Freddie this is the best birthday present ever! It'll be just like old times!" Fred blushed as she spoke with her face so close to his. Daphne suddenly realised she had been hugging him a little too long, and was blushing herself. Luckily, everyone was distracted as Scooby began heavily licking Fred's face. "Easy boy! It's great to see you too!"
"Oh speaking of old times, here guys!" Velma said, pulling out a box of Scooby Snacks from her bag and tossing them to Shaggy and Scooby. "Too long Velma, they're stale." Shaggy laughed but still ate them. The gang all chuckled because in their time apart, absolutely nothing between them had changed. "Well gang, let's get going." Fred suggested, gaining approval from the others.
"First stop, New Orleans for our first segment: Haunts of Louisiana!" Daphne beamed, gesturing for everyone to get in the van.
"Like New Orleans has some of the best food in the world!" Shaggy commented, making Scooby salivate at the thought.
"Hold on gang, I almost forgot!" Fred tore off the banner on the van, to reveal the familiar orange letters 'The Mystery Machine.'
"Now it really is just like the old days!" Velma smiled.
