Just a quick note before reading, I had to go back and fix a couple of things in the first chapter while I was working on this chapter. I even changed the title slightly (just from Mermaid to Merhog XD) lol

CHAPTER 2: MEETING SELENE

Being the fastest thing alive, it didn't take long for Sonic to bring the maroon merhog back to Tails' workshop at Mystic Ruins. Doing as instructed, he went to the bathroom and filled the tub with water before putting her in. After making sure she was comfortable, Sonic left the bathroom and waited for the rest of his friends.

He was currently sitting on the couch in the living room when he heard the door opening and turned his head to see his friends walking in.

"Took you guys long enough," Sonic smirked.

"How is she?" Amy asked before Knuckles could make a remark.

"Other than still being unconscious?" Sonic shrugged. "She's fine. Wasn't sure what temperature to make the water, so I hope lukewarm water is okay."

"I think that's fine," Tails said as he sat next to Sonic and everyone else sat on another couch. "I mean, I'm no expert on merfolk, but I think they can survive most water temperatures and types."

"I agree!" Cream chirped with a smile and Cheese nodded happily from her lap.

"So, now what?" Knuckles asked with arms crossed.

"We're just going to have to wait for her to wake up," Tails answered. "Whatever happened left her completely exhausted; even my scanner picked up some minor injuries."

Amy had a thoughtful look on her face and placed her fist under her chin. "Well, there was that storm we had last night. Do you think that's how she got the injuries?"

"Hopefully she can tell us what happened, and we can figure out our next step," Sonic said.

"Assuming she speaks English," Knuckles sighed.

Everybody sweat dropped at that; it never crossed their minds that the first mermaid they see might not know their language. The Miles Electric can translate many languages, but certainly not from mythical creatures! Guess they won't know until their guest wakes up.

While they were talking, the merhog was still resting in the bathroom. Suddenly, she started to groan and slowly opened her eyes halfway, revealing an aquamarine color. Blinking slowly, she gently sat up and placed a hand on her head.

"My head…" She groaned. "What happened…?"

Looking around, she realized that she was in a bathroom, but there was something…off about it. Feeling something wet, she looked down to see that she was in a tub full of water.

Is this…water? She thought with a confused look. How can I even see it, unless I'm… She then looked terrified. Oh Neptune! Now frantic, she tried to get out of the tub. But because she's no longer in the ocean, she fell on the floor. "OW!"

The five Mobians jumped when they heard a thump and yell in the bathroom and turned their heads toward the door. Realizing that the merhog's awake, they quickly got up from their seats and hurried over to the bathroom. Sonic opened the door and he and the others saw the maroon merhog sprawled on the floor, groaning in pain.

"Oh my gosh!" Amy gasped. "Are you alright?"

The merhog lifted her head to see who spoke, and she widened her eyes in shock. She could see two hedgehogs, a fox, an echidna, and a rabbit carrying a light blue creature that looked oddly familiar. But instead of fish tails, they all have legs!

…

…

She quickly sat up looking absolutely scared out of her mind. "AHHHHHHHH!"

Her scream caused the Mobians to yelp, but before they could say something, the merhog made movements with her arms and the water from the tub came barreling toward them.

"DUCK!" Sonic shouted and he and the others took cover.

They watched the water hit a wall, and to their shock, it turned to ice. Slowly, they turned to look at the merhog, who kept her arms up and was breathing rapidly.

"Alright, who are you, land dwellers?!" She asked. "What am I doing here?!"

"Seriously?!" Knuckles bellowed with an angry tick mark. "This is the thanks we get for saving your life?!"

"Knuckles, stop it!" Amy glared. "Her reaction is perfectly normal!"

"W-Well, yeah, but still!"

"Saving my life?" The merhog questioned with a raised brow.

"Y-Yes, miss!" Cream squeaked nervously with Cheese looking concerned. "We found you unconscious at the beach and we brought you here to get better."

The merhog looked at Sonic and Tails for confirmation, and they nodded letting her know that what Cream said was true. She lowered her arms slightly, but there was one thing that she needed to know.

"Then let me ask you all something," she glared. "Are you in cahoots with that crazy scientist?"

The Mobians looked at her in shock before groaning in annoyance, much to the merhog's confusion.

"Eggman…" Sonic muttered. "Why am I not surprised?"

"Judging by your reactions, you're not affiliated with that man?" The merhog asked with blinking eyes.

"No, miss," Tails said with a shake of his head. "We've been stopping Eggman from taking over our home many times. Just a few months ago, we formed a Resistance to stop his army from taking over the planet."

The merhog blinked again in shock at what the fox said. These five Mobians not only know that man, but also have fought against him for who knows how long. Now she wondered if there were other folks that could help them out.

She finally let out a relieved sigh and gave them a smile. "Thank Neptune! For a moment there, I thought that man contacted backup and somehow caught up to me."

She then looked out of the bathroom and moved her arms again. To the others amazement, the ice that was on the wall became liquid and floated back into the tub through her movements. She giggled in amusement after seeing their stunned faces.

Shaking her head, Amy stood up and smiled. "Now that that's out of the way, why don't I make you some tea, miss…?"

"Selene," the maroon merhog answered with a smile. "Selene the Merhog. And tea sounds nice."

"Wonderful!" Amy looked at Cream and gestured to her to follow. "Come on, Cream!"

"Okay, Amy!" Cream hurried after her with Cheese flying after them.

Tails left to get things organized and Sonic and Knuckles carried Selene out of the bathroom. Now they'll finally learn from the merhog what Eggman has been up to.

Selene is officially introduced. I've always wanted to do a Sonic story involving mermaids; whether with official characters, or fan characters, or both! A guest reviewer (not sure how I feel about the review itself) mentioned Merna the Merhog from one of the old Sonic cartoons, and she's actually a bit of an inspiration when coming up with this character. And Selene's ability with water may or may not have something to do with a popular Nickelodeon show that I love growing up. :3

I have some of her info on my profile if you want to know more about her, and I'm still getting some of my other characters organized, so it might be a while before their info is put up.

You may have also guessed that this story takes place between Sonic Forces and Sonic Frontiers. I was still working out a plot and characters when the latest game came out (and I've finally beaten it on New Year's Eve XD), and I wasn't sure how to incorporate it into the story. So, to save my brain from exploding from new information, this is the direction I'm going with. Although, I may or may not include some of Sonic's moves from the game XD. And who knows, maybe I'll do a Sonic Frontiers story featuring Selene.
