I missed Stargate, but I got back to rewatching the whole series. This little tale was born. Let's see where it takes us.
Chapter 1
My final day on earth… God, that sounds bad. Jennifer is deep in thought, walking around the underground maze called Cheyenne Mountain. All the personnel around her seem to know exactly where they need to go or what to do. She is just wandering around, trying not to go crazy.
The new personnel for Atlantis have been down here for the past week getting all their medical testing done and ready for the trip to the Pegasus galaxy.
Three weeks in a spaceship.
It still sounds crazy to her, but it will be her reality starting tomorrow. Jennifer turns another corner and suddenly finds herself in the middle of gym equipment.
"This is not the mess, nor the infirmary," she mumbles and turns on the spot, but as she takes the first step, she walks into something firm.
Oh god!
"Are you okay?" suddenly, a low voice asks her, sending shivers down her spine.
"Ehm, yeah, just got turned around heading to the infirmary… "Jen rushes out.
"Are you hurt?" another worried question and a soft touch on her wrist.
"No, I am a doctor," she replies and looks up into worried blue shimmering eyes.
"I can show you the way," he offered, and was that a straightening of his spine?
"Thank you," Jennifer replies and follows the man out. He is definitely fit and well trained, she thinks to herself, letting her eyes take in the man leading her back to where she came from.
"Major? Did you hurt yourself?" Carolyn Lam's familiar voice greets them as Jen follows him through a swooshing door she'd passed mere minutes ago.
"No, I just found one of your doctors in the gym." the Major explains and takes his leave.
"Jennifer? One of my doctors?"
"Sorry, I could scream in embarrassment, but I just can't find my way around here for the life of me."
Carolyn chuckles and motions to one of the empty chairs with her head.
"Why were you coming to see me if you're not hurt?" she asks.
"Well, to be honest, I was trying to find the cafeteria or just some fresh coffee or something to do..." Jennifer meekly explains, feeling her cheeks color.
"The major would've shown you the way there, too, you know," Carolyn smirks.
"Yeah, great. Dr. Keller's new essential for work: a military escort or human GPS!" Jennifer exclaims, exasperated, and throws her arms up.
"Hey, stop it. It's normal. This base is not as easy as you'd think, but as far as I understand it, McKay has somehow managed to integrate the Ancients map of Atlantis with the tablets every expedition member gets. So have him program your main paths in..." Carolyn interrupts and even adds a wink at the end before adding," Plus, contrary to your belief, the military, especially the Air Force, believes in signs in structures. You have to learn them. See the colored stripes on the floor: they will lead you where you need to go."
"I'll never learn that. Maybe I should just stay here and ..."
"And how will you do your research? You wanted to work with Carson and get his insights." Carolyn stops her, and as the alarm sounds, she just throws a pair of gloves at her. A team of medics and nurses rush in with what looks like two men with arrows sticking out of them.
This wasn't the distraction she'd asked for, but somehow it worked. She focused on that and even assisted in the two surgeries.
"All Atlantis personnel, please head to the conference room on Level 12 for immediate beam up," the two women hear as they leave the scrub room after getting changed out of their used scrubs for a second time.
It was a hasty goodbye, and Jennifer was glad that all her stuff had already been readied and transported onto the Daedalus days before. The only thing she needed to grab was her personal backpack. She ran as fast as she could, but she could see she was one of the last to arrive. General Landry was waiting with only a small group of what looked like scientists and his trusted Seargent.
"Dr. Keller, this is the most important one. I was just about to send a search party," the General shakes her hand. Good luck and safe travels," she says.
She shudders while the room around her turns light and bright for a second, and after blinking, Jennifer finds herself in a dark hangar.
"Welcome to the Daedalus; I am Major Marks, and if you give me a moment, I'll hand out your quarters for the trip to Pegasus," a soldier in a flight suit greets them all. His clipboard flashes a few times while he taps it, and suddenly, Jennifer realizes he isn't holding a clipboard but a tablet.
She is extremely grateful for Marks showing her to her quarters for the trip before he heads for the bridge. Feeling exhausted after two major surgeries, Jen collapses onto the bed and sleeps.
She can't be sure of the time when she wakes up. Her wristwatch seems more or less useless. Had she slept two hours or fourteen?
In any case, her stomach was grumbling, so she quickly threw some water in her face and made herself a little bit more perceptible. She took two steps outside into the hallway and glanced left and right, trying to recall the way Marks had described the mess. Why hadn't she written that down?
Okay, you're a doctor. You can recite all human bones. You should be able to find a way to do this! she chides herself and starts walking.
After what feels like an eternity, she realizes she must've done something wrong. When she heads for it, the door in front of her doesn't open, and when she swipes her ID, she hears a sizzle behind her.
Great, a forcefield barrier. How am I supposed to get out of here now?
Jennifer swipes her card through the reader next to the force field, but nothing happens. The static sizzle and blue hue remain active.
Fantastic, now you're trapped. She mumbles to herself and suddenly hears the sound of heavy boots coming down the corridor in a run. She'd love nothing more than to blend into the wall or something, and she presses her eyes shut.
"Doctor?" a voice addresses her as the sound of running grinds to a halt.
Her head shoots up, and Jennifer is met with the blue eyes again.
"I must've taken a wrong turn," she waves her hand around while the major triggers his earpiece.
"Lorne, to the bridge. It's Dr. Keller. I don't think this is a security risk. I'll let her out and bring her to," his eyes lock on hers, and Jen blurts out, "cafeteria,"
"and bring her to the mess, where she was headed, apparently."
He seems to listen to a reply and then swipes his card, and miraculously, the force field drops.
"Thank you," Jen tells him and tries to fight the blush of embarrassment in her cheeks, to no avail if the heat she feels is any indication.
"Doc, the cafeteria or officer mess is about three levels up. You were about to open an unpressurized 302 bay.", the Major explains and guides her to the nearest staircase. She couldn't be certain, but there was some humor in his words.
"Oh god. I am so going to get lost again. I mean, could we maybe inject me with some sort of tracking beacon right now?"
"Doc, I don't think tracking you would help you not get lost. But maybe I can help and show you the signage around here."
Yes, there definitely was a laugh behind his words.
He is making fun of me.
"Okay, so your quarters are right down this corridor, and see this little sign?" he points to a slightly more shiny dark grey patch on the wall with a crossed fork and knife, "That's where you want to go."
Jen manages an "Okay?" and he seems to have heard the question mark, too.
"Let me make sure you get there," he motions for her to go ahead. "I am sure the view makes up for the difficulty in finding the place."
Jen frowns.
"A windowless space with benches welded to the floor? I don't think so."
"Doc, you've been missing out," he tells her. He points down a corridor that is intermittently tinted with blue and purple lights.
Moments later, he swipes open a door, and Jen's mouth falls open a little.
"Wow, that's beautiful. But what is this space?"
'That smile is dangerous' is the last thing she can think before her mind goes blank for a moment.
"Doc, take a seat. You look a little out of it. Have you eaten at all since you came aboard?"
"A few times, but it's easy to lose track of time. I was coming for breakfast, but that looks a lot like lunch," she says.
"Well, now that you know where to eat with a view," he trails off as the intercom calls for all 302 pilots to the bay.
"Duty calls," he finally says, and Jen actually feels her stomach plummet for a second.
Over the next few weeks, on their way to Atlantis, she tries various times, but either the major doesn't eat, or she just always misses him.
Or he realizes what I am doing and evades the crazy stalker.
Maybe this is for the best. A man with that smile was just bound to break hearts, right?
"Final approach to Atlantis," the intercom startles her a little while packing up the cabin she'd called home for the past few weeks. "All medical personnel slated for the city, please gather in the officer mess, science teams in the lab, and the military in the fighter bay. The beam down will then commence orderly to your designated arrival spots."
So, what do you guys think? More? Go back to the drawing board?
