Hi guys
Thanks to everyone who supported the prologue, I'm glad this fanfic has support :D
Just in case, it will have elements of modern warfare such as artillery and other inventions from the early 20th century, except guns, so don't be surprised. In the series they also did that, although the end of book 4 ?
I already translated the first chapter, my English isn't my first language, so comment if I make a mistake in any word.
Enjoy the chapter.
She should be used to it by now.
- This is frustrating - Korra sighed boredly, looking into nothing, waiting for something to do.
After spending so much time at sea, it was becoming tedious to wait for the enemy's next incursion into their waters and although it's very callous of her, she looks forward to their attack, at least he will be able to take out some northerners this month.
Her platoon was waiting for them under the water and they had some surprises prepared for them. Since the North destroyed most of their ships in the early years of the conflict, they had to resort to old war tactics to placate them, the ideas of the late chief Sokka protect and care for the tribe until the North falls when her father kills to the chief Unalaq, and following the laws of vendetta, she must eliminate her cousins Eska and Desna.
A goal that is increasingly far from being realized, the war began when she was a baby in the despicable New Moon Massacre, a truly dark time in her tribe's history, and stagnated before she was recruited at age 12, when she became alpha.
In recent weeks, they haven't been able to communicate with other nearby companies or with the high command and it's worrying, the North has also been retreating, slowly giving way, as if leading them directly into a trap, that's the general feeling among the soldiers, but Commander Tark doesn't see it that way.
Something isn't right and they would soon find out.
A disconcerting explosion in the submarine shook her out of her thoughts and sent her away from her respective area of attack, from the impact the fuselage of the submarine opened up a huge hole that ejected them into the dangerous forces of the ocean, everything was quickly flooded, Korra and her fellow waterbenders of the squadron surrounded the non-masters in an air bubble and pulled them out, things didn't get any better from there.
A strange object was approaching at an impressive speed and hit the fuel area of another submarine, they didn't have a chance, that thing made them explode underwater. What was worse, more were coming towards the rest, apparently, the one that exploded gave the emergency signal, some started to surface and others were hit by those things.
Only 6 of 15 submarines of the company were saved.
On the surface, enemy fire awaited them, the shells knocked down the remaining submarines and from the explosions, a terrifying shower of metal fragments embedded in their skin, several died immediately and others were left dying, unfortunately they realized too late that they were the test subjects of a new weapon.
A calm day turned into a complete horror, the sea was dyed red.
From a safe distance from the sea mines they planted, the guns of the Northern ships dropped these bombs that fragmented into thousands of parts. Half of the defensive troops, mainly non-bender soldiers, fell collateral victims to this weapon, drastically reducing the chances of a counterattack.
The survivors protected themselves by descending a few meters into the sea in an air bubble and a small war room was created as she and about 10 surviving junior officers gathered.
- They're going to wipe them all out! - Shouted a young alpha, a corporal from the second underwater platoon - What happened to Commander Tark?!
- He died in the underwater explosions - Captain Uruk answered calmly.
- Then what are we going to do, Major Sila?! - Asked another soldier in desperation.
An idea popped into her head.
- I have an idea - Korra exclaimed making use of her position as lieutenant, to calm her comrades, but a stern look made her rethink her idea - If you allow it, Major Sila.
The officer with the highest rank among them analyzed her briefly in search of doubts - Go ahead.
- For the moment, we are few to face them - Korra affirmed firmly - But... we are enough to ruin their incursion, this is the plan.
She explained that basically it was almost similar to what they normally did, only, instead of attacking the northern ships from the sides, they would lure them into the line of mines as they retreated south, obviously they would chase them and get caught in the mines, destroying their ships and then they would take care of eliminating the crew members.
That was in theory, because in practice it was a little different.
Once the conference was over, they got underway, the northern soldiers were surprised when they saw them emerge from the water as if nothing, the 30 waterbenders created ice platforms and in small groups headed south, the northern ships followed as the plan indicated.
The bursting of the sea mines produced large waves, it turned out to be an advantage for the next step of the plan.
Much of the northern raid sank to the seabed, however, two battleships were left standing, so they set out to eliminate them like the others.
- Attack! - Major Sila ordered.
The northerners shuddered in fear as the southerners entered the battleships with the momentum of the waves, she mocked their weak waterbending attacks as she finishes off any northerner that came her way, her sword sharpened with salt water and gracefully froze limbs, cut flesh and crushed bones, at some point, the blood of strangers stained her face and the air was permeated with death.
Korra looked like a wild beast on the battlefield as her comrades wiped out the crew and damaged the cannons and engine room.
Despite the South's best efforts at eliminating the Northern soldiers, the Southerners were dwindling worryingly, the crewmen of the other battleship finished off theirs and attacked them with water and ice bombs from a distance, to throw them off the scent of a reinforcement platoon arriving at the ship, there they realized they couldn't finish them all off without die trying.
Korra, Sila, Uruk and 5 more soldiers were surrounded by the enemy, they fought tooth and nail, she lost her cool when Major Sila was killed in front of her eyes, her men surrendered and faced with imminent defeat, she accepted that her plan failed and that she condemned her comrades to an atrocious death, but she didn't stop fighting.
If this is her end, then she will die with dignity.
A large piece of ice hit her head and knocked her down, stunned she wanted to get up, but the enemy soldiers immobilized her and when the northern soldiers were about to execute her.
The growl of an unknown animal alerted them, a huge beast resembling Avatar Aang's pet appeared flying over their heads heading south, the northerners felt threatened by such a giant creature that they shot at it to bring it down, but it narrowly missed, but they didn't expect someone to return the favor.
A strong gust of wind blew more than 10 northern soldiers overboard and flying like a bird in the sky appeared a very particular bender, one that controls an almost extinct element, the air.
Everyone was shocked, for it was the first time in their lives that they had ever seen airbending.
With short hair, pale skin, yellow and orange tunics, tattoos of arrows on her body, the airbender appeared as an anomaly in a sea of blue.
She came down to the deck towards the southern soldiers, evading and taking down the northerners with a blizzarding staff, her postures resembling dance steps.
- Help us, please! - Pleaded a badly wounded soldier, once the airbender stopped and stood in front of them.
Korra could see the airbender up close and noticed that she is a young alpha about her age, in some strange way, she recognized her, even though she had never seen her before.
- Don't worry, folks, I'll help you - Her grayish eyes flash determination, so many immediately trusted her.
With utmost ease, she dodged a water shot coming from behind and with a single stroke of her staff sent many soldiers to the other side of the ship, the enemy tried to corner her, but it didn't work.
To the rhythm of a dance, the air master created a cyclone that surrounded them completely, which fed on the surrounding wind and became more and more powerful, those who tried to break through it, failed, until the air nomad abruptly expanded it over those of the North, making them fly in all directions.
- Wow - Korra and the southerners were amazed by the airbender who selflessly helped them in their battle, because she alone had defeated the reinforcements without much effort, she didn't kill them, she just knocked them out.
- We won! Hurrah! - The airbender celebrated, looking at them with joy until they reacted.
- Tie them up! - Captain Uruk ordered, standing up and giving her a slight bow - I, Captain Uruk, on behalf of all my companions thank you for saving our lives, young airbender.
She was a little embarrassed and bowed - You don't have to be so cordial with me, Captain Uruk, my name is Yang, I'm the granddaughter of Avatar Aang, I was on my way to their tribe when these soldiers attacked me.
- What are you coming to do in our tribe? - Korra asked curiously, it has been years since a foreigner came to the Southern Tribe, since the massacre, all foreigners were expelled and entry into the tribe was banned.
- I'm looking for the new Avatar - She answered confidently.
-There are many waterbenders in Republic City and in the North. Why are you looking for it here? - Korra questioned the girl's response.
- Well, if the Avatar was born in Republic City, the press would have discovered him years ago and if the Avatar had been born in the North, you would have already lost the war - She stated calmly.
Ohh, so many years in the war and that idea never crossed her mind, certainly her little sister was right that she is a bit stupid.
- The spirits told me that the Avatar is among you, it would be perfect if your Chief grants me the permission to search for the Avatar in their territory - The airbender commented to the rest of the southern soldiers, they began to distrust her because of what she said and she realized - Ehh... What happened? Did I say something wrong?
- Don't talk about spirits - Korra indicated seriously - It's one of the reasons why Unalaq declared war on us... It's a delicate topic, please be discreet, I couldn't help you if they imprisoned you.
Yang remained silent, with a puzzled expression, until she told them - Oh... This will be more complicated than I planned, so I'll have to use traditional methods to find him.
- Whatever method you use, I don't think you will find it, Master Yang - Captain Uruk interrupted them calmly - It has been 17 years since the death of Avatar Aang and we haven't found any clues to the whereabouts of his successor, most likely he could have died in the fighting, you should consider traveling to the Earth Kingdom like the White Lotus did a few years ago.
- Don't worry about that issue, Captain Uruk, I'm very sure that the Avatar is nearby. Once I find him, he will change the course of the war in their favor - Yang promised the waterbenders, who calmed down with his words.
- If that's your plan, then all the more reason we'll take you with him, Yang - Saying her name caused that feeling that she already knew her, but she acted as if nothing was happening, Korra smiled at her and raised her hand for a traditional warrior salute, the confused airbender gave her forearm squeeze, although not with the same force.
Yang froze for a while, looking strange until she smiled back, but twice as big, she looked like a little girl -Thank you very much… ehh… Could you tell me your name?
- I'm Korra, the firstborn of Chief Tonraq -.
She's jumping with excitement, although not literally, she's too old for that.
- I can't believe it's happening, my mission is beginning to be fulfilled - Yang murmured excitedly, traveling on her flying bison Denji with the 7 soldiers from the south that she saved.
Since she left Republic City, her journey was very calm and pleasant to a certain extent, observing the misery of the small towns of the Earth Kingdom was very sad and motivated her more to complete her mission.
Anyway, she knew that, if she went south, she would be getting into someone else's war, but she didn't expect the north to attack her before she arrived.
When she landed on the ship, she noticed the dead and the blood, but she decided to ignore it to help them, she pretended to look at the clouds when the southerners killed the gagged northerners and threw them into the sea.
From the sky, they watched as the last battleship fled, the sight of destroyed ships and floating corpses from both sides a nice reminder of victory, what a bad lie.
It left a bad taste in her mouth and she felt she was breaking her vow of non-violence.
Her father warned her that the war was brutal, but she didn't know to what level of brutality it would escalate among the water tribes, and the books definitely didn't help her interpretation of the war, those deaths only caused her discomfort.
There are dying soldiers covered in blood next to her!
How naïve she was being!
It was clear that she would see more death than ever here than in her home, anyway, she had to let it happen to complete her mission, it's for the greater good.
- Hey - She heard Korra call her - Come down a little, we need them to see us.
As they descended from the clouds, a huge wall came into view, surrounding the snowy coast and with small gaps that allowed the entry and exit of submarines and small ships, at the top, sentinels aim ice arrows at them, ready to eliminate them.
- Identify yourselves or we will attack! - The leader of the sentinels warned.
- We are from the Tribe! Submarine Company, 14th battalion! - Korra shouted next to Yang on the bison's head.
The leader of the sentinels recognized them slightly and gave the signal to approach, Yang led Denji until he was above the wall and landed there, behind the wall, a large city stretched out, people nearby noticed that something unusual was happening. Yang got off the bison and dodged several spears out of its way.
- Don't get off your beast, airbender! - A sentry growled with bravado and the rest looked at her with distrust.
- Wait, don't attack her! - Korra ordered sternly and the group became intimidated.
- Princess Korra, the airbender is a foreigner, the laws indicate that she is prohibited from setting foot on our lands - The leader of the sentinels argued formally.
- According to the laws, she became an ally of the tribe when she saved me from death and rescued my group from the North's trap, it is better that you treat her with respect - The waterbender defended her - Take the injured, I will take her to my father and the council.
- As you order -.
The sentinels obeyed and took the dying soldiers to the healing rooms, Yang watched sadly as 2 were too pale.
- You shouldn't have bothered, Korra - Yang told her, trying to sound sad as she helped her onto the flying bison and they flew to the city.
- It's nothing, anyway, I need to inform my father about the situation on the front and convince him that the arrival of the Avatar would benefit us a lot right now, Yang - Korra commented with concern, several weeks have passed without communication with land, the probability of an invasion scared her, even more so if they had new weapons - Before... I heard you say that you would have to use the traditional method to find him. How long would it take?
- A couple of weeks, for sure - Yang assured.
- We don't have weeks - Korra murmured uneasily - What was the method you were going to use?
- A spiritual one - The air nomad answered and the southern woman frowned more - It's not bad at all, I promise you, I just have to touch the person's forehead and feel their chi, the Avatar is the only one who has 4 channels of chi, so it would be very fast.
- Mmm... What's the other method like? - Korra asked a little stressed.
- The person has to choose 4 relics of the past Avatars from the hundreds of toys that I bring with me - She briefly explained the traditional method of the air nomads, for Yang it was a very effective method, because this is how the ancient monks identified her grandfather since he was child.
- Seriously, toys? - The waterbender questioned skeptically - You're fucking with me, aren't you? The candidates are adults, not children!
- Hey! It's the method my people have used for centuries, it's clear that it's useful - Yang scolded seriously.
- Okay, I understand, I went too far, but your spiritual method seems better to me than the toys, but I don't know if my father thinks the same or even considers it appropriate - The southern princess considered what Yang explained - Land there.
Below them, a majestic ice palace stood proud, with multiple arches and perfectly tailored windows, Yang carefully lowered the bison onto a street in front of the institution.
- Come with me, no one will tell you anything if you accompany me - Korra told her, getting off the bison.
- Where do I leave Denji? -.
Despite how huge and heavy the flying bison is, it was very difficult for Korra to find it intimidating, a tame creature grunted idly and snuggled into the figure of its little mistress, who gently caressed it. The people who pass by were surprised by the scene, it's even something out of the ordinary for them, since not even Naga was as tame as this bison.
- We'll figure it out soon - Korra answered with a grimace - I know, I'll tell the servants to leave your pet in a courtyard.
- He isn't a pet, he's my best friend - Yang corrected, smiling and hugging Denji.
- I understand perfectly - The waterbender managed to say before seeing some maids leave the palace - Take the flying bison to the external courtyard.
- As you order, princess -.
The gentle airbender handed Denji's reins to the cautious maids, who carefully directed the massive creature. Korra opened the large door of the palace, Yang entered and saw the beautiful interior, a beauty completely made of leather and bone, the hanging lamps, tapestries, sculptures and paintings showing the history of the South are impressive.
- Come on, Yang, we have a meeting to attend - The airbender followed Korra up the stairs.
Being so close to her objective, the air nomad reviewed in detail the procedure she would follow when she was given permission to search for the Avatar, once she found him, she would take him to Republic City to train the 3 elements she was missing, and when Avatar is fully ready, they would solve the egalitarian crisis and other world problems.
She hopes things go according to plan.
