Thanks guys for your support of the fanfic, you encourage me to write.
Keep in mind the label of original characters, I need to show other points of view and advance the plot for the arrival in Republic City. I'm finishing the third chapter while planning the fourth, Republic City will be arriving soon as will the rest of the Krew.
Enjoy the chapter :D
Her day goes as normal.
Before dawn, Sakari left the barracks and attended her weapons training with Sergeant Dakk, being an omega non-bender, she is a strategic disadvantage in the war, but thanks to her father, the Council had given the opportunity to enter the army to people like her and that is why she strives hard to always be ready for battle.
At noon, she visited the rebuilt Southern palace, there her mother, her little brother and Naga, Korra's pet, greeted her with kisses and hugs, her father saluted her when he came to rest after a strenuous conference with the Military High Command.
She enjoyed spending time with them, she helped her mother prepare lunch and she made her favorite dish for her, she played with Kadok and Naga in the snow for hours and her father complimented her on her progress in military training, although they shared a nice afternoon, everyone had a heavy feeling of sadness, as they knew someone is missing to make it a real family reunion.
No one had heard from Korra for the past 2 months.
Every month, she sends them a letter and informs them about the increasingly precarious situation on the front lines, but in these last few months, the Northerners have cut the Southern lines of communication with the offending army and uncertainty spread throughout the tribe.
Day after day, hundreds of soldiers of the offensive arrive at the port fleeing from the North on small ice platforms, bringing with them the wounded and the bodies of their fallen comrades, the families weep disconsolately for the state of their puppies, they arrived mutilated, pierced and with signs of torture, even some weren't recognized by how destroyed their bodies were.
For years, the tribe considered Unalaq the traitor as a merciless enemy and the corpses he left alone increased exponentially the hatred towards him and his descendants, her father and the High Command prepare contingency plans for the worst, a land invasion of the North.
Terror took hold of many disbelievers and some hopelessly accepted an imminent end, although the vast majority of people, especially the defensive soldiers, have the firm determination to fight to the last consequences, to fulfill their mission of eliminating all the invaders.
After going through such a terrible massacre and facing this disheartening war, the new generation has learned not to let itself be dominated by the enemy, hating the North for what they did and what they do, and that the Southern Water Tribe will continue to live until the last southerner dies.
However, the effort is in vain if people are still afraid of them.
The anguish is latent among the families, including yours, although everyone tries to hide it, they couldn't. Her mother cried bitterly over Korra's absence when she believes no one sees her, her father tries to stay sure that she will return when her stay at the front ends, Kadok is just a child who wanted to play with his older sister again, Naga is so sad because she doesn't see her, she doesn't eat for days and Sakari...
She missed her too much.
The mere thought of Korra being dead was impossible for her to understand, since they were little girls, her older sister was always so strong and brave that it seemed unlikely that death would reach her, but she is mortal like the fallen soldiers who arrived at the port.
With the North constantly attacking, it's a certainty that Korra could die any day and no one would know.
That was what scared her the most.
- Chief Tonraq - A servant interrupted the family meeting - Excuse me, sir, Princess Korra has arrived.
The whole family rejoiced at the good news and instant relief eased their worries.
- What are you waiting for? Bring her to me! – Her father ordered with a visible smile, but the servant sweated profusely at the order, Sakari immediately suspected him.
- What aren't you telling us? – She pressured the beta servant to speak, with a look of death that she managed to frighten him.
-She... she brought... a foreigner – He stammered his confession.
Sakari was confused by the servant's words, everyone knows about the law of foreigners and the punishment that is imposed for violating the law, but Korra probably had something in mind with that person to make him enter.
- Is he some general from the North? – He demanded the servant's response.
What if Korra wanted to have this general's public execution? That's very smart of him, because that would be an event that would alleviate the public unrest of recent months.
- No, my lord, she is an air nomad - The beta answered reluctantly.
What the fuck are you thinking, Korra?
- Make them come in - Immediately the servant obeyed and left the room.
The awkward silence invaded them, none of the adults wanted to talk about what just happened, until the youngest finished it.
- Dad! – Kadok called him cheerfully – What is an air nomad?
For a moment, Sakari had forgotten that her little brother was there, happy and curious about the visit of a foreigner.
-An air nomad is a bender who controls the air – Tonraq briefly explained to his young son – The only airbenders that exist are descendants of the previous Avatar and from what the legends say, they are peaceful and friendly in nature.
- I want to meet her, dad! I want to see how she controls the air! Maybe I'll do it like this! Or this way! – Kadok quickly moved his arms in circles, trying to make the water he controlled flow freely like the wind.
- I don't think so, baby bro - .
- Silence! – He shut her up, annoyed – I know what I'm doing.
- Whatever you say... anyway, you're doing it wrong - Sakari joked with her little brother, even she herself didn't know anything about it and stopped when her mother sent her chilling looks with the clear message of ''stop bothering him'', until that the door was suddenly opened.
- Korra! – She entered the room with her military uniform completely damaged, her wounds seemed to have barely stopped bleeding and her face was expressionless, her eyes lit up when she recognized them, her father was the first to receive her – You are here, you are safe, my girl.
Tonraq hugged Korra tightly, she hugged him back in the same way and gestured for them to come closer.
- Daughter, you're back! – Mother sobbed, joining the hug – I'm so happy you're here!
- Welcome home, sis! – Kadok shouted, jumping on the alpha's back, who barely held him up.
- I missed you a lot, Korra - Despite being indifferent to her, Sakari cared a lot about her and hated when she was impulsive and stupid, she loves her too much.
- I... I'm very happy to be able to see you once again - Her words sounded heavy and cracked, her watery eyes betray the neutrality of her face - I missed you all so much.
Stopping her hug and moving a little away from Korra, Sakari caught the gaze of a stranger, gray eyes and a serene face greeted her kindly, the alarms in her head rang loudly, she didn't think and just attacked.
In a second, she pulled the dagger out of her and went straight to stab him in the stomach, but he deflected her attack with a blast of air, her weapon ending up buried in the wall.
That was a very quick reaction, so she picked up her dagger and returned to the attack, the hand-to-hand combat was fruitless and the weapon barely grazed him, his movements were strange and evasive that made her frustrated, when she was careless, the stranger took her hand and took the dagger from her. She got very angry and was going to beat him to death until someone stopped her.
- Sakari, wait! – Korra shouted stopping her, she has barely touched the stranger – Don't attack her, Yang is harmless!
- That? – She saw the stranger better, tattoos of arrows, pale, gray eyes, little hair, taller than Korra, yellow robes, she is the air nomad who visits them.
Damn, she ruined everything.
- Hello - The alpha she tried to kill a few seconds ago greets her, offering her hand and smiling nervously.
- Forgive me for attacking you - She took her handshake and apologized with shame, Korra is angry, her parents upset by her overreaction and her brother confused by what just happened - I shouldn't have done that.
- Don't worry - She laughed lightly - I'm getting used to being attacked.
- What do you say? – She didn't like that she took it with humor, as if aggression were a small thing.
- I'm a person who doesn't hold grudges - She clarified with a smile - What you did is already in the past. Do you want to start again?
Sakari nodded strangely, the airbender changed her posture and acted as if she were seeing her for the first time.
- Hey! My name is Yang, it's nice to meet you. What's your name? – Her voice is soft and genuine, apparently she is a naive alpha, she decided to play along out of guilt.
- I'm Sakari... it's a pleasure to have you here - She sounded false, but the airbender didn't seem to care. The blue and gray collided with each other, without the intention of harming each other.
A cough ends the staring contest, her father looks serious while her mother looks at her curiously, her brother looks excited at the alpha's arrows, and the air nomad just notices the other people in the hallway.
- Chief Tonraq of the Southern Water Tribe, it's an honor to be in your house - The young alpha gave him a respectful bow - My name is Yang, I'm the granddaughter of Avatar Aang, I thank you for your hospitality and Korra's good company. You have a wonderful family, sir.
- Master Yang - Her father spoke with a stern voice, commanding respect and the girl quickly straightened up - It is really nice to receive a visit from the descendant of an Avatar, tell me, what is your purpose here?
- Sir - She swallowed before speaking - I ask you to grant me permission to search for the Avatar in your tribe.
Tonraq raised an eyebrow at the airbender's reason and was about to question her, but Korra rested her hand on his shoulder with a tired look - Father, the situation on the front is terrible, they have dangerous new weapons and the Avatar is our only option to counter them.
Sakari was scared by those words, her father thought for a few moments - So our suspicions were true, I'm going to gather the Council and you two come with me.
- See you soon, Sakari - Yang said goodbye to her with a smile while her father and Korra ordered the servants to call the council.
The women and the child saw the alphas retreat to the Council room in a hurry, the older ones had a sneaking suspicion that things weren't going to improve anytime soon, the war is catching up with them.
- Mom – Senna looked at her son, who is scared - Are we going to lose the war?
Sakari didn't know how to answer without ruining his hopes, but her mother always had the right words - Honey, I know it seems like we're going to lose, but when Korra and the airbender find the Avatar, he will help us end the war and finally, we will live in peace.
- Yeah! The Avatar will save us all! – Her little brother exclaimed with joy, ignorant of the harsh reality, the master of the 4 elements hadn't appeared in all this time.
What's stopping him from not showing up now?
He has already abandoned the world when they needed him most before, 100 years of suffering at the hands of the Fire Nation is proof enough of this, it's clear that the Avatar won't intervene on their behalf and the Southern Water Tribe will have to win on their own.
Or that's what she hopes, lest fate play tricks on her.
In her opinion, she is wasting her time.
Korra should be with her father, in the war room creating the defense and counterattack plan for the invasion, instead she is here to monitor the airbender in her search and report any suspicious activity to the Council, she is basically her babysitter.
Wonderful.
Although she honestly doesn't have a bad time, Avatar Aang's granddaughter is nice.
- Oh, I'm so sorry - Yang looked pitifully at the young soldier with the wrong relics - You aren't who we're looking for.
- How am I not the Avatar?! - The alpha claimed furiously, squeezing the air toys - I'm one of the best water benders in the tribe! I come from a prestigious family! I have the age and power to be the worthy successor of Avatar Aang.
- Calm down dude, listen, I don't choose the Avatar, it's something you have to be born with and unfortunately it isn't your case - The airbender tried to calm the boy down - Give me the relics back, please.
- Take your shit and get out of my tribe, you dirty half breed - The guy threw the toys on the floor and left, they didn't break because Yang softened their fall with a blizzard.
- You should have hit him, he deserved it - She told her as she watched her pick up her things.
- It isn't worth it, Korra - Yang answered as if nothing had happened and waited for the next candidate near the table with hundreds of air relics - We'll find him soon.
He and the other 40 candidates had the same indignant reaction, acting like tantrums at the refusal, as if being the Master of the 4 Elements was the greatest thing a person could be, even from her position as a princess, Korra can assure that it's more of a burden than a privilege.
Poor whoever it is.
- How many do we have left? - She asked the airbender tiredly, it was already night and only uncooperative defensive soldiers approached, she wants to go to sleep soon.
It's been a long day for both of us.
- How many young people are there? - Shit, she knew this would take forever.
Throughout the meeting, Korra rejected the idea of searching for the Avatar in the traditional way of the Air Nation because they don't have enough time, they rejected the Water Tribe's own method since it originated in the North, she wanted to mention Yang's spiritual alternative, but her father had already decided and the Council agreed, so her efforts were in vain.
In short, it was one of the most chaotic and frustrating council meetings of her life.
The Council members' reaction to Yang's presence in the meeting room was something she should have seen coming, they didn't let her speak at all, they despised her mixed ancestry and insulted her every chance they got, however, when her father allowed her to express herself, she made her mission and her family legacy known, very few were convinced of her purpose and the rest constantly threatened her.
In the end, Tonraq granted her permission only because she is a descendant of one of the South's heroic figures, Master Katara, so he forced her to accompany her so that people wouldn't fear her presence, although Korra differs with the latter.
It's surprising that the air nomad would remain unfazed by the unfair treatment of her people, anyone would have exploded and started a fight, but Yang proved once again that she is very different from what Korra expected from a foreigner, rather, from an air nomad.
She belongs to a dead people, it's normal for the world to forget what they were like.
- Yang, let's go to sleep - The airbender listened to her because she barely stays awake, she was keeping the relics of the Avatar among the hundreds of toys in her giant bag, until she stopped and looked at her with doubt.
- How old are you? - She asked her curiously, kind of funny because she should have asked that at the beginning when they met, not after a few days.
- I'm 17 -.
- Hmm... the age range of the candidates - She dragged the giant bag to where it was - Choose 4 relics, Korra.
- Huh? -.
- Try it, you are old enough and you master the element - Yang tried to convince her to take the test without much enthusiasm - Come on, to confirm that you aren't the Avatar. Please, it will be quick.
She doubted the method once again, it seemed so childish and ineffective, but the airbender looked at her hopefully, so she took 4 of the many relics that caught her attention, these seemed familiar to her for some strange reason.
A turtle, a propeller spinner, a platypus bear and a ball drum.
Yang silently analyzed her choice, she took out a small book from her robe and her face turned into a rough expression from what she read.
She noticed the abrupt change in mood.
- I chose these toys... Have you already confirmed that I'm not the Avatar? - The seriousness on the airbender's face is something really strange in someone who keeps playing with her huge flying pet - Yang... What's wrong with you?
The silence overwhelmed her and she knew that what Yang was going to say would change things completely.
- You're the one I'm looking for - She told her frankly and Korra froze - You were by my side all this time and I didn't realize. When I met you, I knew you were different, but now I found out why, you're the Avatar, Korra.
Fuck.
Motherfucker.
- This isn't funny, Yang - Korra waited for the airbender's childish laugh, but she didn't laugh at all - I didn't like your joke.
- It isn't a joke, I'm telling you the truth, you're the Avatar - Yang expressed those terrible words and didn't believe at all, because it cannot be true, she isn't that - You are my grandfather's successor and you must fulfill his legacy.
- Shut up! Stop telling me those things, Yang - Korra took her by the shoulders to make her stop what she was saying, it was a terrible idea to do that damn test - I don't believe you, I've been a waterbender all my life and at no time have I done any other type of elemental control, I don't even see spirits. How is it possible that I'm the Avatar?
- In times past, the Avatar showed control in another element when he found out about his status, at approximately 16 years old - Yang explained to her and she still didn't believe her at all, she never showed any signs, so it has to be fake - A year older than you, if you don't believe me, that's fine, I understand you, but I have an alternative way that will make things clear.
- Your spiritual method, right? - She asked skeptically and the airbender nodded - Then do it so it's clear to you.
Her teachers have taught her that everything related to spirits is dangerous, but she has nothing to lose, she would resolve this misunderstanding and they will continue searching for the true Avatar in the morning.
This will cause Yang to change her mind.
- I'm ready -.
Korra dropped her hands while the airbender placed her thumbs on her forehead and sternum.
- Be quiet, close your eyes and breathe with me - She followed the instructions and the air nomad pressed her fingers on those two points, something entered her and she felt a change within herself.
Suddenly a strange energy ran through her body and filled her with strength, the spiritual experience disturbed her senses and she opened her eyes due to discomfort.
- What did you do to me?! - She demanded, upset, her body felt strange and she looked at her hands with concern - Tell me what the hell you did to me, Yang!
- Calm down, Korra! I will explain to you! - Yang told her, walking away from her, because the waterbender seems to be about to attack her.
In a moment of desperation, Korra wanted to summon water to grab her guest, however, that element wasn't the one that followed the order.
The movement of earth and the airbender's scream alerted her to what she was doing, very different from the usual display of water, the ground had opened and swallowed Yang's feet, which she couldn't avoid because of how fast it was.
- I told you it was true - The air nomad sighed, looking at her buried feet.
- I moved the earth - She whispered, bewildered by her new ability - I couldn't do that before... How?
- I'm more in contact with the spirits than you think, I freed the light from the darkness - That proverb did nothing to answer their questions and they only created 10 more about her, but that girl is definitely not a simple airbender - Since you saw it with your own eyes, you cannot deny that you are the Avatar, Korra, soon the other elements will come and you will have to master them to fulfill your duty to the world.
Instead of feeling joy or some other similar feeling like any normal person, but she didn't feel anything in particular, there were important things to worry about, the invasion is very close, now she is the one who must find a way to stop it and end this war.
How will she do that? Nobody knows.
- My search is over and I have to tell your father... Can you get me out of here? - Yang warned her, trying to get her feet off the ground.
- No!... don't tell him. I will tell him when the time is right, I'm not ready - She confessed her new role with insecurity - It's something totally different from what I was raised for, I need to think about my new duty and all the things I have to leave behind, because I honestly don't know what to do.
Practically, she has the obligation to restore peace and the power necessary for it to last, the destiny of the 4 nations lies on her shoulders and in addition to being the bridge between the spiritual world and the normal world.
Doesn't Yang see the enormous duty she just gave her?
The airbender left her serious expression and adopted a warmer one, apparently understanding her point of view - Korra... there are things we cannot control and being the Avatar is one of them, the road will be difficult, but I know you will make it to the end. I guarantee you that you have my support and that of my family for this, I know that you will be a great Avatar and will do great things for the world.
Despite being of a similar age, Yang spoke with wisdom and was grateful that she understood her situation.
- Korra, this is inopportune, but you must travel the world to master the elements - Great, the Avatar's trip, one more inconvenience, at least Yang looks embarrassed.
- I can't do that - Korra expressed sternly - I can't abandon my tribe in its worst moments.
- I didn't tell you to run away, but to travel and find your own masters as in your past lives - Yang clarified calmly - You will gain power and experience until you become a complete Avatar.
- But if I leave, I will leave them vulnerable to the North - She worried about the implications that this new part of her person would carry, because the Avatar doesn't belong to a single nation, but rather belongs to all nations, including that of the enemy.
A big problem.
- My family and the Royal family of the Fire Nation have a good friendship, I can ask Fire Lord Izumi to help you in your war, her navy can block the passage to the south - Korra was surprised by the proposal, unlike many of the closed-minded councilors, she considered it an excellent idea.
The Fire Nation is totally different from what it was before, under the rule of Lord Zuko it has become the second technological power in the world and has done everything to earn international forgiveness for its past war crimes.
If the almost extinct Air Nation trusts them, why should they distrust them?
- I have to talk about this idea with my father and the High Command, but first I must face the coming invasion, you are the one who must get out of here, if the enemy kills you, my tribe will be in serious trouble - She warned her, however, the airbender didn't listen.
- Don't worry about me, I will help during the invasion, even if they don't want me here - The air nomad assured, returning to her usual childish joy even with her feet in the ground - I came to your tribe to look for you, so I won't leave without helping you. If I have to fight, I'll have to, I promise I won't die that easily.
- Thanks - She managed to say before her energy ended abruptly and she released Yang's feet after a series of abrupt movements.
It was a night of revelations for both of them, so Yang said nothing more and took her huge bag of toys to the palace.
It being midnight, lying in her comfortable bed, she can't sleep as she continues to assimilate the news that the airbender gave her, she is the Avatar and she has to accept it.
It's her duty to bring harmony and balance to the world, it must be said that she knows almost nothing about how the world is governed, but according to the little news that reaches the South, everything seems difficult to deal with, each nation has its own crisis and radical groups are very popular today, the imbalance is everywhere and has become more widespread after the death of her predecessor.
It's a pain in the ass but she has a very hard job to do.
For the moment, she must concentrate on the land invasion of the North, because after fleeing that humiliating defeat, they left her the way clear towards them.
Korra relieved the council about the existence of the new weapons that wiped out half of the troops in that sector with great ease and they told her about the destruction of the offensive army, the lack of weapons and the lack of soldiers trained in the defense.
It's a deplorable situation and could become desolate if they continued with the same old tactics in this isolated war, the enemy's superior weapons would make the ground invasion more devastating than the New Moon Massacre.
Everyone was going to die because of her if she didn't do something soon.
