Guys :D
This is the chapter that took me the longest to write, there were many discarded ideas and things that I wanted to put in, but it wouldn't work in the plot, in the end, I think it's a good revelation chapter. And our friends from the southern water tribe will discover the wonders of modern warfare :)
Enjoy it.
What she is doing isn't right, but it's for the greater good.
Yang has mixed feelings about her involvement in the war as she watches the sky in her glider for enemy ships.
She was very happy when she discovered that her new friend is the Avatar, but was a little sad because she cannot take Korra to Republic City to begin her training with the other elements, because otherwise her diplomatic efforts won't have been worth it, so she decided to support her in stopping the invasion that is about to arrive and that is the problem.
She knows perfectly well that she belongs to a pacifist people, the air nomads were never warriors nor did they exercise violence unless it was in self-defense, however, she will fight to gain the trust of the Southern Water Tribe, especially Korra, although this wasn't her initial purpose, she had to change her option for the greater good and because she doesn't have the heart to abandon these poor people in one of their worst moments.
The Southern Water Tribe doesn't have as many people as at the beginning of the conflict with the North, they're disappearing little by little and she cannot help but remember her nation. She doesn't want them to have the same fate, so she would help them in this battle and then give the Avatar to the world.
Something that seems strange to her is that Korra had her spirit contaminated with dark energy, making it impossible for her to handle the other elements, leaving her alone with her natural element, water. Someone had to do it and wanted the Avatar away from the imbalance and chaos of the nations, although it only incapacitated her for a time, or was that what that person wanted in the beginning, the truth is that she isn't sure about those speculations.
The mystery is that no one here cares about or respects spiritual techniques, which reveals that this foreigner was some kind of spiritual leader, he knew who her friend was and using some powerful spiritual ability like her, he sealed her friend's powers and lengthened the war unnecessarily.
That is more concrete, but many doubts arise at the same time, such as:
Who was the responsible
When could this have happened?
Why did he do it?
She hopes those issues will be resolved soon.
- What's that? - She asked herself, seeing a strange thick fog on the sea - Why is there fog at noon?
Then she sees them, a whole fleet of battleships heading towards the tribe, she climbs into the clouds and flies at full speed to the wall.
- Did you see the enemy, nun? - The leader of the sentinels asked once she landed abruptly on the edge of the wall.
- Yes! They're very close! Get to your battle posts! - She desperately informed the older man, who doesn't believe her, she breathes and calms down - An entire fleet is approaching, prepare your soldiers to fight.
- Look, little girl, I'm not here for your jokes - Great, the sentry doesn't believe her again, she doesn't have the heart to receive another scolding for disrespecting the elders, so she better went to give her report to Chief Tonraq, being on the edge she dropped into the void.
Despite the circumstances, the cold air on her face made her feel alive, happy for the momentary freedom of everything, before hitting the ground she took advantage of a current of wind and took flight towards the Ice Palace.
She arrived almost touching the clouds, she looked at the beautiful city below, so different from the majestic Republic City, its simplicity has managed to amaze her in a few days and its people, still cautious of her presence, they didn't deserve what is to come, no one deserves to disappear.
- Chief Tonraq! - She called him as she entered his office, passing by several guards, there he was meeting with Korra and the High Command in a last-minute conference - Sir, sorry for interrupting you, but the enemy is very close.
The room was filled with tension and expectation, the generals were unmoved by the news and Korra didn't act like that, she knows the danger of that, silence reigned until the Chief asked her - How close are they?
- They're about 31 miles out to sea - She answered and fear took over the room - I estimate that they will arrive in the afternoon.
- So, there is no time to waste, we have an enemy to face -.
The Chief and the High Command initiated emergency protocols and defense operations, laid all mines on the coast and in nearby waters, installed various types of traps at the entrance of the city, deployed the entire defensive army to the outskirts of the city and the rest of the offensive army collaborated in the evacuation of civilians to the South Pole, as far as possible from the battle that would soon break out.
- I'm not leaving without you! - Mrs. Senna shouts angrily, although her look was pure terror - I won't let those damned ones touch them!
It's overwhelming to see how scared people were, especially when it was Mrs. Senna's turn, who practically didn't want to leave the palace, the first place that would be attacked by the North.
- Mom, you have to go to the refuge! - A stressed Korra demanded of her mother, who didn't back down - Dad ordered to go there now, it is for your good and for Kadok's good.
- Don't worry about us, mom, dad is one of the most powerful waterbenders in the tribe and we were trained for this, you and Kadok will be safer there - Sakari advised her a little more calmly, trying to reassure her.
- Yes, mommy, we have to go - Kadok asked his mother.
- I won't abandon you, you are the best gifts that life has given me! I almost lost them last time, I won't allow them to be killed! - The heartbroken woman exclaimed firmly, hugging her last son, she lived that massacre so many years ago and she didn't want to relive those terrifying moments.
Poor woman.
- Mrs. Senna, go to the shelter, please, it's for your safety - She calmly asked the older omega, but she continued to deny her request - I assure you that the North won't win.
- And who doesn't guarantee it to me?! You, a nun incapable of killing! Stop lying to me and don't tell me that the Avatar is going to help us, because he isn't here! - She saw out of the corner of her eye when Korra's face crumpled at her mother's claims - He abandoned us! He will do nothing for us!
- Mom, calm down - Sakari hugged her to console her - This isn't the time to lose hope... the Avatar may be lost for 100 more years, but we will never give up, we will resist until we win.
- Yes, mom, we won't die today - Korra promised, resting her hand on her mother.
When she saw them she remembered her own mother, it has been a month since she has seen her and she misses her very much, unfortunately the family moment ended when the chaos began.
- We are under attack! - Someone shouted in the middle of the crowd.
The alarms sounded along with the frightening sounds that crossed the wall, they resembled thunder that made the wall shake strongly and destroyed the sentinels, this caused many people to panic and take shelter in their homes, few people evacuated while the soldiers headed to the front line.
It's the moment of truth, the invasion has begun.
- Yang, get my mother and brother out of here - Korra ordered sternly - Sakari, let's go.
Korra and Sakari left as she watched impact after impact, the ice crack in large chunks until the tribe's protection collapsed violently, forming a large cloud of debris and welcoming the Northern army.
They had to get out of there now.
- Come, get on me - She crouched down in front of Kadok, he hooked himself on her neck and put his legs around her waist, she adjusted her glider in her outer tunic and went towards Mrs. Senna - I'm really sorry, ma'am, but we have to go.
With great respect, she picked her up and using airbending, ran at high speed towards the main shelter on the outskirts of the city.
On her way, some terrible things appeared that she named as trails of fire, the North threw them into the sky and they exploded into thousands of pieces when they fell to the ground, she jumped several of them while observing that every building that was there wasn't left standing and every person who fled didn't survive to tell the tale.
It was a horrible scene.
The drop in temperature told her that she had arrived and her bones became somewhat rigid, Yang concentrated and the air around her became warmer, she entered the shelter without many setbacks and there were a few civilians and a couple of soldiers.
- Leave them here - Said a soldier coming towards her, he helped the child get off her back and she left the mother on a blanket next to other refugees.
The soldier gave them parkas and a hot drink.
- Thank you - She smiled at what Korra's little brother said - Defeat the bad guys.
- Of course - She promised him just like she would with Meelo and Kadok's small celebration makes her laugh.
She was about to leave when something stopped her, a hand caught her before she got out.
- Tell Korra to kill Unalaq - Yang was surprised to hear that request from Mrs. Senna, something so horrible couldn't come from her - He mustn't live, tell her that, please.
- Okay, I'll tell her - She accepted that request only because of her look of hope, she went out into the cold, opened the wings of her glider and took flight with a rush of air at her feet.
When she was going to meet with the army, the trails of fire were still falling, they were going so fast that she had to maneuver her glider several times to avoid breaking up and crashing, she feels intense heat being so close to them and supports her weight when turning or deflecting the trajectory, but the worst happens below.
- Oh, spirits - She wailed at the sight.
The massive destruction of the city is a bad sign, unbreathable black smoke came out of buildings and houses, intense flames licked their foundations, the ground was charred, the streets were covered in ash and cremated bodies of all kinds appeared, the stench in the air was of burning flesh and the survivors fled in terror from the cruel spectacle.
The children cried from horror while the adults saw how what they feared so much was repeated, the soldiers did everything possible to get them out of there and so they came down to help.
- Protect yourselves! - She warned a small family behind her, with the help of her closed glider, she diverted the path of the fire trail towards a destroyed building, it exploded and she had to cover them with a strong cyclone to avoid being hurt by the debris, scattered them when she extended her technique.
- Go to the refuge, now! - They obeyed immediately and she continued helping more people on her way, her airbending changed the course of the contrails and saved many who were resigned to dying in their homes.
Suddenly, those things stopped falling and a series of explosions erupted behind the fallen wall, but they didn't cause much damage to the invaders. A few hundred footsteps echoed at the entrance to the city as southern soldiers waited expectantly and civilians fled for their lives.
The Northern soldiers encountered the traps, however, they didn't cause enough inconvenience for them to enter the city.
And there, the battle began with a wolf howl as a war cry.
The first northerner fell when he was pierced from behind by a spear, the aggressor pulled the weapon from his body and the poor unfortunate man's guts spilled out, his squad was quickly shot down on several fronts in the ruins of a house, the southerners took advantage of the trust of the invaders and their destroyed environment to begin the counterattack with the factor of surprise along with the hatred that fueled the anger of the soldiers who are ready for revenge.
Death overtook the Southern Water Tribe for the second time this day.
Being in the middle of combat, Yang had no choice but to participate when a northern soldier tried to cut off her arm with his sword, she disarmed him and drove him away with a gust of wind, his companions came enraged and attacked her ferociously, so she increased the force and speed of the surrounding air to knock them out, despite leaving them alive, they died anyway.
Because the southern soldiers finish them off in front of her.
They didn't wait for them to wake up, they cut their throats while they lay unconscious and kept their bodies as trophies or mocked their horrible end, there were even some who had a fate worse than death.
She shuddered with terror when she saw the atrocities of the side she supported, but she decided to ignore them although she will never get used to that.
- Yang! - A familiar voice shouted and she dodged an ice thorn, with her glider she launched a strong blizzard that sent her attacker and his companions to the other side of the street.
- You have to be more careful, nomad - Sakari advised her, covering her back and in a combat pose - Unless you want to die.
- Thank you and it wouldn't be like that - She responded avoiding a jet of water, the enemy tried to hit her, but she made him stumble due to his bad posture - I can't die, I have a nation to rebuild.
- Shouldn't you have stayed with my mother and brother? - She asked her, running directly towards a northerner who throws sharp fragments of ice at them, she dodges his attacks and stabs him in the stomach.
Hell, it's the same thing she wanted to do to her when they first met.
- I came to help and that's what I do - She protected the omega with a well-aimed blow to the arm of the soldier who wanted to attack her from behind, she kicked him in the chest and the guy flew several meters away - Until I complete my mission.
- Were you able to find the Avatar? - Oh no, what was missing - Because it would be excellent if he gave us a hand, don't you think?
- Yes, I found her - Yang thought properly about her words as she knocked out a soldier without much effort - But... she doesn't feel ready yet, she told me that she will show herself when the time is right.
- Great, another Avatar that hides. Let's see how long she wants to make us wait until she sees fit to save us - Sakari exclaimed with false enthusiasm after burying her dagger in the throat of a northerner - Is this someone I know?
Shit, everything rotted.
- Watch out! - She warned her before tackling the soldier who appeared out of nowhere and throwing him with a strong current of air against another one who was arriving, leaving them unconscious.
- Hey, I was supposed to watch your back - The omega joked a little more relaxed, apparently the fighting went to another street, she approached the enemies and killed them like her companions did - I'm the one with the most experience in combat.
- Well, it should be mutual, it's much better that way - She replied, following the game, she leaned on her glider to rest a little - The fact that I'm an air nomad doesn't mean that I'm helpless.
- I've noticed - Sakari smiled at her, she has a beautiful smile that didn't last very long - We should leave now, this area is already clean, surely there are other places that need support.
- Yes - She saw the non-bender run towards the nearby streets and check if there was anyone around, looking at her glider she came up with an idea to do that task faster.
- Hey, Sakari! - Yang opened the wings of her glider as she approached the omega - Hold on!
- What? - She grabbed Sakari by her waist, hugged her to her and they rose to the sky with a rush of wind on her feet - Stop! Very high! Put me down!
The non-bender begged, clinging desperately to her robes, observing in fear how far they are from the ground.
- Put your feet in the back - She nodded and slowly complied - Stop looking down, better look ahead, I'll find the others in an instant.
Sakari became calmer after what she said.
Korra was right, the invasion is a nightmare come true.
The ease with which they destroyed the massive 50 meter wall was overwhelming, it only took a few minutes to collapse a wall that took 6 years to build, they devastated an entire city in less than an hour and only the combat between the armies is favorable, the rest of its defenses have failed.
Given this, Sakari concluded that the traditional confrontation with an enemy on equal terms ended and a horrible reality appeared before her eyes.
The war has changed and these things kill more people than the soldiers themselves as happened today, the new weapons that her sister warned about are really terrifying, something taken from the dark times of the 100 Years War, a dangerous power in the wrong hands.
Now, after eliminating the first enemy troops, the North sent more men and they launched those fire things again, they fell to the ground like lightning and deafened anyone who was within 30 meters, the worst of all were the explosions.
It causes the most horrible death she has had the misfortune to witness, in most of those cases she was too far away to be part of the disaster, however, this time her luck ran out, Yang and several soldiers from her squad were heading to support the western sector of the city when they were ambushed by one of those things.
The airbender was barely able to save her by creating a wall of air, the impact sent them against the ruins of a house and her vision was obscured.
She felt her body go numb before she regained consciousness and found a frightening scene.
The ashes fell like snow, the stench of burnt crimson was very intense and the viscera of her companions were scattered everywhere, she couldn't distinguish to whom each body belonged, it was a repulsive collection of the entrails of those who were once her friends.
This sickens her, no one deserves such an atrocious death.
She wanted to vomit at her grotesque discovery, but held it in time, the nausea disappearing when she saw movement at her side.
- What happened? - She heard Yang's muffled voice - Everything hurts me.
She leaned on a broken pillar and got up from there, she saw the air nomad lying on the ground recovering from the explosion, Sakari crouched down to help her stand and also to cover the view.
- Can you walk? - She asked her, coming out on the other side of the ruins, the alpha took a few wobbly steps.
- Yes, a little - Yang lamented holding her injured leg, she made her sit down to see the wound, it wasn't serious, but it would leave a mark, so she cleaned the blood with the water from her canteen.
-That's it - She covered the wound with a piece of the airbender's tunic, who complained about the pressure of the tie - That's enough, we have to go to the western sector.
- Where are the others? - Sakari stared at her without knowing what to answer - Are you okay?
- Yes... they had to leave and I stayed because you didn't wake up - She flat out lied to her, anyway it's much better for her that she doesn't know the truth - Now that you're awake, we have to get out of here.
- Thank you, Sakari - The air nomad gave her a small smile of gratitude and stood up with her support staff. She breathed deeply and had a more relaxed expression with the noise of those fire things falling in the background - I just remembered that I have a message for Korra.
- What kind of message? - .
- Mmm... it's a request - Yang replied conflicted and the non-bender distrusted that unclear answer - I promised your mother that I was going to do it.
- Then don't waste any more time and let's look for Korra, I'm sure she'll want to hear what mom asked, like cleaning her disgusting room or helping Kadok with his waterbending - She joked, amused by the airbender's sudden seriousness and the lack of any other reaction on her face, it was evident that she isn't going to tell her anything and clearly the message isn't be careful, because she would have told her that too.
What else could a mother ask of her daughter?
- Let's go - The airbender indicated once the last thing of fire crashed far from its hiding place, she took her hand and began to run at a speed that was difficult for her to keep up with, as they crossed the destroyed streets they witnessed more destruction and death.
Both the soldiers of the opposing side and those of her side, among them there were civilians, were hit by those things, reducing them to mere shadows of what they were before, the alpha tightened her grip on her hand as she carefully observed the dead, frozen with horror and realized many differences between them again.
- Stop looking - Sakari took her out of there quickly, she couldn't save her from the harshness of those deaths - It will affect you less.
- Okay - She whispered bewildered and partially recovered her sense of urgency. the omega understood her reaction, the alpha was born in a pacifist culture, where violence and death aren't as common as in her tribe. It was evident that she wasn't prepared for this kind of thing.
Is this the price to search for the Avatar?
They ran towards the sounds of battle, they were heading towards the coast, apparently the defensive army had managed to get the North out of the city, finally some good news.
In the middle of the confrontation of the armies on the beach, a familiar figure stands out, killing any northern soldier who crosses her path. They had found Korra and were going to enter the fight when something happened.
- Korra! – She screamed desperately for her sister and Yang stopped her from going to save her.
She and other southerners were crushed by huge blocks of ice created by the new reinforcements from the North, she barely resisted the attack, stopped the cut of a sword and killed the soldier who wounded her, but another came who stabbed her in the shoulder and the others knocked her to the ground, beat her savagely, one of them picked up their fallen companion's sword and put the edge to her neck.
- No! Let me go! AHH– The ground shook terribly and the soldier failed to land the killing blow on her sister. Suddenly the earth opened in two large jaws and swallowed those soldiers and everyone who was nearby, friend or foe, except Korra.
She... she is suspended in a powerful whirlpool and her eyes shine with a resplendent light.
She raised her hands towards the sky and the water rose like a gigantic wall in front of the battleships, then she lowered her hands towards them and a tsunami destroyed the ships stranded on the coast, no one there could have survived.
- The Avatar has saved us! – A southerner exclaimed loudly and the surviving northerners tried to flee, but were captured.
The power consumed Korra's energy completely as it stopped producing the whirlpool, she fell into the abyss, but Yang caught her in time and understood everything that just happened.
- Long live Avatar Korra! – Everyone around her exclaimed with joy and relief, the invasion had ended with a shocking discovery.
Her sister is the Avatar.
Comment, what do you think will happen from now on?
