Volcanic Panic
In our last chapter, Ash and his friends went in search of the Cinnabar Gym so they can battle for their seventh badge. Our heroes were in a scorching surprise when they found the hidden Gym suspended over a pool of hot boiling lava. Blaine, the Riddle Loving Gym Leader, accepted Ash's challenge to choose Ninetails to go up against Ash's Squirtle. But water was no match for fire as Ninetails won the first match with her ember attack.
Next, Rhydon went up against Ash's Charizard, who refuse to obey Ash's commands and ended up snoozing and losing! How can Ash turn thing around to get his Volcano Badge? It was Pikachu's electrifying effort!
Magmar, a Spit Fire Pokémon, invulnerable to voltage, recently pushes Pikachu close to the edge of incineration! Pikachu is in real Pika Peril!
"Pikachu, duck for cover!" Ash ordered.
"Cha!" Pikachu ducks his entire body.
The fire star blasted Pikachu off the battlefield.
"Pikachu!" they all yelled.
Pikachu was hanging on to the edge with a burnt mark on his back. He climbs back onto the field. "Pika... Pika..." Pikachu panted.
"Heh heh." Blaine chuckled. "Your little Pikachu doesn't know when to give up."
"Forget it, Pikachu!" Ash hops over to the battlefield and runs up to his side. "It's not worth it."
"Pika?!" Pikachu gasps, turning his head up to him.
"I quit." Ash tells Blaine. "No Gym Badge is worth losing Pikachu."
"Congratulations for making a wise decision, Ash, just in time." Blaine congratulated him. He puts back on his wig. "If you've been foolish enough to continue the match, you would've been disqualified as a Pokémon Trainer. Have your Pikachu rest up and the hot springs will make it feel better from the injuries." He turns around and walks to the door.
"Hey, where you're going, Blaine?" Ash calls to him with Pikachu in his arms. "You got to give me another chance."
"We may battle again, someday." Blaine said before he left the room.
Slade watches Magmar hops down into the lava.
"I'm sorry, Pikachu." Ash apologizes to him. "It's my fault I cost us the match."
"Pi..."
"I'm not leaving Cinnabar Island until I get that Volcano Badge!" Ash exclaims with a determined look on his face.
After leaving the Gym, Ash was rubbing Pikachu's head as Pikachu was on a footstool in the hot springs. "You'll feel a hundred percent better soon, Pikachu, and even better when we win." Ash assures him.
"Sounds like you still want to take on Magmar, even if it has Fire Blast." Slade said.
"There are other Pokémon Gyms in the Kanto Region that's not in volcanos or being suspended over lava." Brock tells them.
"But Brock, if we leave now, it'll be a while to find another Gym. So we should stay and come up with a plan to defeat Magmar." Seth suggested.
"There has to be a way to win if Charizard only listen to me." Jovan said.
"Maybe. All of you do have good Pokémon that could defeat Magmar." Slade said.
"Dragonair could be able to beat Magmar since Dragonair is a Dragon Type Pokémon and Fire Type moves are not very effective against Dragon Type and Fire Type Pokémon. I might have a chance." Jovan said.
"And so do we." Seth reminds him.
Meanwhile on the girls side there were four straws sticking out of the water. Justin watches from the side of the hot spring as Meowth was cheering. Their teammates stood up from the water and started coughing. "I don't think you four could stand the heat inside that volcano."
"So how else are we going to steal Magmar and beat Pikachu?" Sam wondered.
"I got a plan to steal Magmar." Meowth said to them. "We'll go inside to tell Magmar that it won a fabulous prize and when its guard is lowered, we'll freeze it in place with our ice blaster."
"I got the ice launchers right here." Justin walks over to a nearby bush and takes out several ice rocket launchers. He hands the weapons to the rest of his teammates and both evil teams enter inside the volcano. They came up to the metal doors.
"Let's do this." Justin said, putting his hands on the door. "Yeowch!" he cries in pain.
James and Sam kicks the door in and Team Rocket and Team Neo quickly entered the big room. "I'm proud to present our winner two tickets to an island paradise. If the winner is here, come on out!" Justin called out to Magmar.
Then a wall of lava fires up from below, causing Jessie and James to be scared. When the wall of lava disappeared, Magmar was on the battlefield.
"Mag!" Magmar shouted angrily.
"There's our winner for the day!" Justin smirks at it.
"Time to chill out!" Jessie aims her launcher.
"You'll be the perfect frozen treat!" Sam smirks at it.
"Now!" Justin shouted as they all fire their ice rockets at the Spit Fire Pokémon. The rockets exploded to create a fog cloud. When the cloud disappeared, it reveals Magmar frozen in a case of ice.
"Now that's why being bad is cool!" Sam celebrated.
While Team Rocket and Team Neo were celebrating, the ice surrounding Magmar melted. They stop celebrating when they saw Magmar unfrozen.
"I think it just gotten a lot hotter around her just now." Justin sweat drops.
"Hurry up and freeze blast the whole place!" Meowth started to run in a panic.
Magmar watches Team Rocket and Team Neo firing their ice rockets all over the gym in walls of ice.
All the explosion and the shaking caught everyone's attention.
"What's going on down there?" Jovan wondered.
"Ah!" Blaine yelled as he outside to the kids. "I was on my way to the lavatory when I heard the explosions. In this case, every room in a volcano is a lavatory. Get it?"
"Now we know how you make these riddles." Anna said.
"We gotta head inside and see what's going on down there." Slade tells them.
Everyone left the hot springs and ran down the stairs inside the volcano. Blaine bursts through the doors, only to feel the cold air. "Ice in a volcano?! That's freezer burn!" Blaine shivered.
"You should really cool it with those jokes, Blaine." Jovan tells him.
"Look who's causing all this ice." Slade said.
"It's Team Rocket and Team Neo!" Anna exclaims.
"We got to that Magmar!" Meowth cried in a state of panic.
Both teams kept firing ice rockets all over the gym.
"What's going to happen to this gym if it's filled with ice?" Blaine growled.
"It'll be a snow cone!" Ash tells him.
"No it won't, Ash!" Jovan shouted, causing Ash to look at him. "This will set off a giant chain reaction with all this hot rock covered in ice!"
"That's right." Blaine nodded.
The entire room began to shake, causing Team Rocket and Team Neo to stop and look around in confusion.
"What's going on?" Sam wondered.
"Maybe we cracked this." Libby suggested nervously.
The ice began to crack all over the room.
"I was afraid this was going to happen." Blaine said as the volcano continues shaking. "All of the ice is cooling off the rocks to cause it to crack apart."
"Isn't going to melt?"
"The ice is melting too fast." Blaine informs Ash. "All the rocks have started shattering. The lava will flow through the cracks in the rock and the surge will cause a huge volcanic eruption!"
The rocks started to crack as a boulder fell into the lava to cause a hole above Team Rocket and Team Neo as hot air came flowing through the cracks. Everyone gasps in shock. Both two chains became loose and fell into the lava, forcing Magmar to jump to safety.
"My gym is ruined!"
Several steams of air became more violent.
"We're stuck between a rock and a hot place!" Libby shouted in fear.
A powerful gust of steam erupted from the ground, firing the boulder both teams through the air while they were still on rock.
"Looks like Team Rocket and Team Neo is blasting off again!" they yelled before disappearing.
The rock everyone was on has cracked, causing them all to yell. The giant boulder crash into another rock. A wave of lava started to flow through the cracks into the room.
"This isn't good!" Blaine exclaims. "The lava has already stared to come from the cracks. I'm afraid it's only a matter of minutes before the volcano explodes."
"What can we do?" Slade wondered.
"Magmar!" Blaine calls out to it, turning around to see Magmar was safe. "If you pile the rocks in the crater, it should be enough to block the lava flow!"
Pikachu picks up a small rock and started walking towards the crater.
"Wait!" Blaine shouted to stop him. Pikachu turns to look at him. "Only a Fire Type Pokémon can withstand the heat from that lava!"
"We got a couple Fire Type Pokémon." Jovan muttered.
Magmar jumps over to them and started throwing rocks inside the crater.
"Charizard, I choose you!" Ash calls him out as he throws the Poké Ball and Charizard appeared.
"Come on out, Charizard!" Jovan shouted calls her out, throwing her Poké Ball and Charizard appeared. "Now, Charizard, help Magmar to throw those rocks in the crater to stop the flow of the lava!" He turns around to see his Charizard letting out a yawn. "She never listens to me."
Everyone watches Magmar continuously throw the rocks in the crater. It was doing fine until the lava broke through. Jovan's Charizard notice Magmar throwing the rocks down below. No matter how many rocks are down there, the lava kept going.
"It's not working! Let's make a run for it!" Misty exclaims to Blaine.
"When the volcano erupts, there won't be any place to run. If Magmar can't stop the lava, everything on Cinnabar Island will be destroyed." Blaine lowers his head.
"What do we do?" Slade wondered.
"Hm?" Jovan notice his Charizard and Ash's Charizard standing next to Magmar with rocks in their claws. All three fire Pokémon began to throw the rocks into the crater.
"Our Charizard are helping them out." Jovan smiled.
"This is excellent. Three Pokémon are more powerful than two." Blaine nodded.
"Alright, Onix, Geodude, Rock Pokémon can take the heat!" Brock takes out two Poké Balls. "Go!"
"Staryu, help them cool off!" Misty takes out her Poké Ball.
"Arcanine, Aqua, come on out!"
"Help us out, Seabiscuit and Nido!"
"You too, Sandslew!"
"Seel, Rose, Vul, help them out!"
All of the Pokemon appears beside each other.
"Not you, Psyduck!" Misty shouted, chasing after her Psyduck.
Jovan watch Ash chase after Jigglypuff. "Let's join in as well!" Jovan tells July, Seth and Anna. He transforms into the black Dragonite. Anna transforms into Vaporeon. July transforms into Golduck and Seth transforms into Sandslash.
Slade watches Anna and July helps cool off some of them while Jovan and the others kept throwing rocks down in the crater.
"Now that's teamwork!" Ash smiled.
"Keep up the great work!" Brock calls to them.
Jovan notices Togepi was carrying a small rock with them. It lost its balance and fell off the edge. Jovan flew to Togepi and caught it before landing next to Misty. He hands Togepi over to Misty.
"You're too little."
Seth and Sandslew both use Rock Slide as their friends kept helping by throwing the rocks or cooling them off with Water Gun. It went on for half an hour as the crater was filled rocks to stop the flow of lava. Jovan watch both Charizards and Magmar putting down the last rocks on top of the pile.
"Magmar." it smirked.
"Groar."
Slade watches his friends comes close to them and transforms back into a human.
"You did great, Charizard." Jovan turns and smiles at her.
Blaine walks up to them. "I don't know how to thank you all. Perhaps I could give you-"
"Are you going to give me my Volcano Badge now?" Ash asks with a smile.
Blaine almost his balance and his wig. "No! I was going to say I'll give another chance to battle me for your Volcano Badge, all of you!"
"Awesome!" Ash cheered. "I'm gonna win this time! And pretty soon, I'll join the Pokémon League!"
"Don't forget us too." Seth reminded him.
After leaving the destroyed gym, everyone was standing at the top of the volcano outside. There was pool of lava inside the crater with several columns made of rock and stone. They were all standing across from each other.
"Since my gym has been wrecked, would you all object if we had our match here on the volcano?" Blaine asks them with his arms crossed. "It's over the lava pit where I first discovered Magmar."
"Fine by us." Jovan said.
"We'll make these matches one-on-one! You probably guess my Pokémon is Magmar!"
"Mag." Magmar took a step forward.
"Who will be my first opponent?"
"I will." Seth said, taking his position. "Go, Sandslew!" He throws the Poké Ball and Sandslew appeared.
"Shrew!"
"Magmar, use Flamethrower!"
Magmar's eyes glow orange and it releases a red-orange stream of fire from its mouth at Sandslew.
"Use Dig to get out of the way!" Seth ordered.
Sandslew started digging to avoid the Flamethrower and punches the Spit Fire Pokémon in the chest.
"Great job, Sandslew! Now use Swords Dance!"
Sandslew jumps in the air and spins rapidly.
"Magmar, Fire Punch, let's go!"
Magmar's hands were covered in fire and started to land a punch on Sandslew.
"Shrew!" he cried out in pain as he got punched in the stomach.
"Hang in there, Sandslew!" Seth cried out. "Use Dig again!"
"Dodge it then Flamethrower attack!"
The Spit Fire Pokémon jumps when Sandslew came up from underground. It opens its mouth fires Flamethrower at him. Sandslew shouts in pain as Magmar landed on a column.
"Wrap this with Fire Blast!" Blaine ordered.
"Sandshrew!" Sandslew shouted as he stands up. Sandslew jumps and hits the ground to cause it to shake violently.
"Magmar!" Magmar yelled in pain before it fainted.
"That was Earthquake!" Seth smiled. "Great job!" He watches Magmar returns back inside its Poké Ball.
"Congratulations, Seth." Blaine smiled.
"Thanks. Sandslew, return!" Seth calls Sandslew back inside his Poké Ball.
"Before the next match begin, I want Magmar to rest up for a few minutes." Blaine said.
A few minutes later, Magmar was feeling better. Anna was up next. "Go, Wag!" she throws the Poké Ball and Wag appears on the stone column.
"Wag!"
"Go, Magmar!" Blaine shouted, throwing the Poké Ball and Magmar appears on the stone column.
"Wag, use Bubblebeam!" Anna shouted.
Wag opens his mouth and used Bubblebeam.
"Mag!" Magmar cries out in pain.
"Shake it off then use Skull Bash!"
"Meet it head on with Head Butt!" Anna commanded.
Both Pokémon collided their heads against one another. With superior strength, Magmar sent Wag flying onto a different stone column.
"Double Slap, let's go!" Anna commanded.
Wag dodges Magmar's Fire punch and started slapping it across the face.
"Flamethrower!"
"Quick, dodge it!"
Wag was quick enough to dodge the Spit Fire Pokémon's attack.
"Use Fire Punch!"
"Mar!" Magmar punches Wag.
"Poliwag!" he cries out in pain as he lands on the ground.
"Get up, Wag!" Anna shouted. "You can do it!"
"Wag!" Wag rolls onto his feet. Then Wag was covered in a white light. Then a blue, bipedal amphibian Pokémon with a spherical body appeared. It has bulbous eyes that protrude from the top of its head. A black and white swirl covers its belly, which is actually its organs showing through its thin skin. It appears to have white gloves on its hands and rounded, digit-less feet.
"Poliwhirl Poli!" he cried.
"Wag just evolved into Poliwhirl!" Jovan smiled.
"Fire Blast!" Blaine commanded.
"Mar!" Magmar releases a powerful five-star shaped blast of orange fire at Wag.
"Use Psychic to send it back!" Anna commanded.
"Wag!" he shouted, causing his eyes to glow blue as he raised his hands in a blue aura.
The Fire Blast attack was covered in the blue light as well. Wag turns the attack back at Magmar. It didn't have time to dodge both attacks as it got hit. As the smoke clears up, Magmar was laying down in the ground defeated.
"You did great, Wag!" Anna smiled.
"Return, Magmar!" Blaine recalls Magmar back inside it's Poké Ball. "Congratulations, Anna!"
"Thank you, Blaine!" Anna smiled as her Wag hops back safely over to his trainer.
"I'll have my Magmar rest up first before the next match can begin." Blaine said.
A few minutes later, Magmar was ready for the next battle.
"Which one of you three will battle me next?" Blaine asked.
"I'll battle you." July walks up to her position with Nido. "Go!"
"Nido!" Nido exclaims, hopping onto a stone column as Magmar did the same.
"Use Fire Punch, let's go!" Blaine ordered.
"Use Double Kick!" July commanded.
Both attacks collided with one another.
"Flamethrower!" Blaine ordered.
"Dodge it!"
Nido jumps over to another stone column to avoid the Flamethrower and fires her Bubblebeam.
"Mar!" Magmar shouted in pain.
"Not bad." Blaine smirked. "Magmar, use Skull Bash!"
Magmar hurtles itself to Nido with its skull.
"Do!" Nideo yelled in pain hitting the ground.
"Now drag Nido with you down below!"
Magmat grabs Nido by the ear and was about to jump off the column.
"Nido, no!" July shouted.
"Nido!" Nido cried as her body began to glow white, stopping Magmar before it can jump.
"It's evolving!" July smiled.
"What are the odds." Jovan shrugs his shoulders.
When the light dies down, a quadrupedal, sky-blue mammalian Pokémon with dark-blue patches appeared. It has red eyes, large, spiny ears, and has two pointed teeth protruding from its upper jaw. It possesses large poison spikes. Its paws have three claws each, and it is able to stand on its hind legs. The hind legs are longer and thicker than its forelegs. It has a stubby tail.
"Nidorina!" she cried. Her body fires massive beam of yellow electricity at Magmar, shocking the Spit Fire Pokémon.
"That must've been Thunder!" Seth gasps in amazement.
As Magmar was paralyzed, Nido slams her body into Magmar as Magmar was flown into a weak stone column. The column broke and fell into the lava. Nido watches Magmar jumps out of the lava and landed on a stone column before fainting.
"We did it, Nido!" July smiles as Nido runs to her trainer.
"That was a good match, July." Blaine nodded as his Magmar was recalled back to the sphere. "I'll have Magmar rest up for fifteen minutes before he next match."
Fifteen minutes later, Magmar was feeling great for another match as Blaine stares at the two boys.
"I'll be your next opponent, Blaine!" Jovan calls out to him. Before Jovan can say anything else, his Charizard flew over to a stone column and lets out a strong roar with fire in her eyes, causing her trainer to be confused. Then it him. "I see. You want to test your strength against Magmar."
"But your Charizard doesn't know how strong Magmar is in a battle." Anna said.
"That only make things even better for her." Jovan said. "But she still needs some training."
Charizard and Magmar both stares at each other.
"Flamethrower!" Jovan and Blaine order at the same time.
Both Fire Pokémon fired their Flamethrowers at once and the attacks collided to cause an explosion.
"Looks like it's a draw!" Jovan exclaims.
"Now, Magmar, use Skull Bash!" Blaine commanded.
"Mag!" Magmar hurls itself at Charizard.
"Mega Punch, let's go!" Jovan commanded.
Charizard's fist became surrounded in yellow-orange flames and punches Magmar's head. It was sent flying into a stone column and fell into the lava.
"Magmar!" Blaine called to it.
Magmar jumps from the lava with its fists covered in fire.
"Use Swift!"
Charizard opens her wings wide. Mutiple yellow stars form in front of Charizard and fired at Magmar. Magmar tries to dodge the attack, but the yellow stars kept following it no matter where its goes and hit Magmar from behind.
"Skull Bash again!"
Magmar gets up and hurls itself again towards the Flame Pokémon. The attack landed this time on Charizard and Charizard was sent flying into a stone column.
"Fire Blast attack!"
Magmar took a deep breath and release a powerful five-star shaped blast of orange fire at Charizard.
"Dive down to dodge it!" Jovan commanded.
"Groar!" Charizard shouted as she dives below the attack and flew above shocked Magmar.
"One last Mega Punch!"
Her fist became covered in yellow-orange flames and punches Magmar before landing at a nearby column. Then Magmar fell on its side.
"Yes, we did it!" Jovan cheered.
"That was a good match." Blaine said as he recalls his Magmar.
"Good-" Jovan was saying until he got hit with a Flamethrower to the face.
After another few minutes has passed by, it was Ash's turn next.
"Who will be choosing for this match, Ash?"
Before Ash can respond with an answer, he heard a heavy foot stomp and saw the fire in his eyes.
"Looks like your Charizard want to test it after seeing how strong Magmar is." Jovan said.
"What?" Misty gasps. "All Charizard wanted to do is sleep."
"We'll see what happens." Slade informs her.
"This is going to be a great Pokémon battle." Ash smiled. "You don't mind if I battle with Charizard, right Pikachu?"
"Pi!"
"Good! Charizard, I choose you!" Ash pointed at nothing where his Charizard was. "Where's Charizard?"
"He's already heading to the battlefield." Slade pointed out.
He turns his head to see Charizard landing on a stone column. "I guess Charizard could use a little more training." There was a couple moments of silence. "I'll fight fire with fire. Flamethrower attack, now!"
Both Pokémon opens their mouths release their two fiery attacks. The attacks collided and exploded.
"It's a tie like Jovan and Charizard's last match!"
"Alright, Magmar, that Charizard may be good, but it's nothing against your skills! Fire Blast it, now!" Blaine commanded.
Magmar took a deep breath and release a powerful five-star shaped blast of orange fire at Charizard. The Flame Pokémon caught its attack with his hands. Fire Blast made him skid a little.
"Hang in there, Charizard! You can do it!"
Charizard shifted his feet into a good strong position and threw the attack over his head.
"Gr, Magmar, use Skull Bash, now!"
Magmar hurls itself into Charizard's stomach with its skull. He was slammed into a column and fell.
"No, Charizard!" Ash cried out.
"Groar!" Charizard growled, opening his eyes. He spread his wings and began to fly out of the lava pit.
Magmar lost Charizard with the sun in its eyes. The Flame Pokémon flew straight down at his opponent as a dust of cloud covered both Pokémon.
"Magmar!"
The dust cloud disappeared to reveal Charizard and Magmar in a tight grasp to try to overpower the other. Magmar smirks and jumps over behind Charizard after pulling the Flame Pokémon forward to the edge and grabbing him from behind.
"You have to fly away, Charizard!" Ash called to him. "Otherwise, you won't have chance if Magmar drags you down into that lava pit!"
"Magmar." it said before hurling itself and Charizard into the lava.
"Charizard!" Ash cried out as both Pokémon landed in the lava pit. He looks up at Blaine. "It's against the rules for Magmar to drag Charizard into the lava pit!"
"Magmar didn't cheat!" Blaine called to him. "You agreed to use the volcano for our Pokémon battle, don't you? Under the volcano is part of the volcano too."
Ash looks down at lava below. "Charizard..."
"Ash!" Misty exclaims.
"Look at this!" Seth cried.
The lava began bubbling and Charizard appeared with Magmar still holding on.
"Zard!" Charizard roars as it flew straight towards the sky.
"Gah!" Blaine gasps in shocked.
"Let's show them your aerial Submission attack!" Ash ordered with a smile.
Charizard began spinning around quickly to make Magmar dizzy.
"Hey Blaine!" Ash calls to him. "Fair's fair, right? If they can battle in the lava, they can battle in the sky too!"
"Gr."
"Charizard, Seismic Toss!" Ash commanded.
Releasing a roar, he began to spin around fast. Charizard grabs the dizzy Magmar and throws it back down to the volcano.
"Mag!" Magmar cried as it landed down in the lava it of the volcano.
Charizard lands on a stone column and looks down at the lava below.
"Magmar!" Magmar jumps from the lava and landed on a stone column away from Charizard.
"Gr." Charizard growled.
No one said a word.
"Mag." Magmar smirked. "Mar!" it cried before falling forward on the ground.
With his opponent beaten, Charizard release victory Flamethrower.
"Way to go!" Ash cheered.
"Pikachu!" Pikachu cheered as well.
Blaine recalls Magmar back to its Poké Ball. "Congratulations, Ash. I take off my wig to you."
"Charizard, re-" Charizard blasts a Flamethrower towards him.
"Zard." Charizard spits fire out of his mouth before firing another Flamethrower.
After they left the volcano, everyone was standing outside of the inn.
"Now, I have one last riddle for you, Ash."
"Huh?"
"What is it that's always red and never have words? The answer is the Volcano Badge!" Blaine takes out five Volcano Badges. "And you five have earned these badges."
"Thank you, Blaine." Jovan said as they were given each a Volcano Badge.
Everyone left the inn to head back to the port.
"The two of couldn't do it without our Charizard." Jovan smiled.
"It'll be a time for those two to listen to Jovan and Ash." Anna said.
"Can't expect anymore than that." Seth said.
"Pika." Pikachu agreed.
Ash and Jovan stops walking and turns around to face their friends.
"We know that Charizard will learn to obey someday." Ash said with a smile on his face.
"So the where's the next Gym?" Jovan wondered.
"There's a Gym located in Viridian City." Brock answered.
"Everybody knows there's a Gym there. It's where trainers go to get their Earth Badge in Viridian City." Misty explains.
"How come you never told us there were gyms in the city when we were there?" Jovan asked her.
"Ash and I were arguing about something." Misty answered. "What was I so mad at you about?"
"Ash and Jovan both destroyed you and Anna's-" Seth was saying but was cut off from Jovan.
"Let's not think about that and get to Viridian City!" Jovan cried quickly and both he and Ash quickly started running.
"I remember now!" Misty shouted angrily. "You and Ash Ketchum owe me and Anna two new bikes, Jovan Hale!"
"Thanks for the reminder!" Anna exclaims angrily as everyone chase after the two boys.
"Hey, wait for us!"
"Pika Pi!"
"Don't you run away from us!"
"Nair!"
