Chapter 3 — Welcome to Lumiose City
Emerging from the treacherous wilderness, Jude and his friends found themselves standing on a pedestrian road, the familiar safety of civilization stretching before them. Trevor let out a sigh of relief, his imagination no longer plagued by visions of becoming a midday meal for gluttonous Beedrill.
Shauna beamed with praise, patting Jude on the back. "Great guiding work dude, you sure know this maze like you lived in it ! We made it out without a scratch."
Jude humbly shook his head. "Merci, but it's all thanks to Noivern," he acknowledged, giving credit where credit was due. "It kept us safe and piloted us with precision."
Tierno, grateful for the recognition, praised his loyal bat-like companion. "You were amazing buddy, I'm really proud of you ! Tonight it will be an all-you-can-eat buffet for you." With a satisfied chirp, Noivern returned to his Poké Ball, seeking a well-deserved nap after his vigilant efforts.
"I'd love to snooze in a Poké Ball too, my legs feel like cotton wool," Trevor complained. Still catching his breath, he asked the question that lingered on their minds, "Now that we've left this god-forsaken forest, how much longer do we hike ?"
Jude pointed towards the distant horizon, a smile playing on his lips. Behind the rolling hills and vast fields, the towering buildings of Lumiose City could be seen, reaching up to touch the sky. A sense of anticipation gripped the air. "Courage, we're almost there," he confirmed, his voice filled with a mix of satisfaction and eagerness.
Serena's eyes lit up with excitement. The capital held out its arms to her, and she couldn't wait to visit. Fueled with renewed energy, the group set off on the final leg before their official registration. Each step brought them closer to the vibrant heart of Kalos. Upon reaching the Metropole entrance, the quintet was stopped by a protective roadblock. Pedestrian and vehicle access were heavily controlled, and no one was allowed inside the city without first undergoing a strict search.
Jude advised his friends to recall their Pokémon. It was the standard procedure for passing through the city's security checkpoint. The guards stationed there directed them to place their Poké Balls and bags on a conveyor belt, which carried their belongings through an X-ray scanning machine. The group obediently followed the instructions, watching their possessions glide through the machine's sensors. They were then guided through a security gate that scanned them to ensure they carried no dangerous items.
Feeling a mix of frenzy and curiosity, the fivesome patiently awaited the completion of the security check. Once given the all-clear, they collected their belongings and stepped forward, officially entering the lively place. Lumiose City stretched before them, a bustling metropolis brimming with life and opportunities. Tall buildings and colorful streets beckoned, bustling crowds jammed the sidewalks, and the hum of thrill echoed through the air. It was the perfect backdrop for their entry into the three-yearly Kalos Pokémon Tournament.
Serena stood in awe, taking in the sights and sounds of this magnificent metropolis. "It's great, just like a movie set ! Jude, I can't believe you grew up in such a magnificent place."
Shauna couldn't contain her giddy ebullience. Turning to Jude, she eagerly asked, "Man, since you're a local, could you be our guide ? Show us all the cool spots !"
Jude naturally agreed, and motioned to his friends to follow him. He pointed out the popular cafes, fashionable boutiques, and the various landmarks that dotted the cityscape. All this was exciting, but above all overpriced, so Shauna and Serena could already give up the idea of either shopping or eating in a luxurious restaurant. Lumiose City unfolded before them like a thrilling tapestry of lights and bustling activity, and its centerpiece soon enthralled their gaze. The iconic Prism Tower faced them in its full majesty, its illuminated structure climbing toward the heavens.
"Must be a splendid view from up there," Tierno thought. "Too bad Trevor's afraid of heights."
Speaking of which, lagging behind the group, a nearly collapsed Trevor was dragging his feet like a wounded Slowpoke. "Guys, if you keep making me walk like this non-stop, I'm gonna have a heart attack before I've even had my first gym duel."
But his peers paid him little heed, too busy sightseeing. As they marveled at the city's architecture and the pulsating atmosphere, a sudden hush fell over the group. All eyes turned to a massive screen mounted on the side of a building, where a renowned Kalos celebrity appeared.
"Hey look, it's Malva !" Serena exclaimed, her eyes widening with admiration.
Curiosity rippled through the urbanites as they listened to her announcement. "Ladies and gentlemen, attention please," Malva's charismatic voice boomed through the speakers, capturing the interest of all who heard it. "I have big news to share with you all. Lysandre Labs is preparing to release the highly anticipated Holo Caster to the public very soon. You can now pre-order yours via the company's website."
Serena's eyes sparkled with genuine awe. Malva was one of her role models, as she admired her reporting skills and her expertise in Pokémon battles. Plus, her position as an Elite 4 member made her a highly influential figure across the entire region. "Wow, Malva is amazing. I wish I could be like her one day," she said, her voice filled with appreciation.
Tierno, on the other hand, shifted uncomfortably, his gaze warily fixed on the pink-haired woman. "I don't know... There's something about her that gives me the creeps. Can't quite put my finger on it. Sure you don't want a less spooky idol ?"
Shauna chuckled and playfully nudged Tierno. "Oh man, you're such a scaredy-Glameow. Malva is just doing her job. Afraid of what, that her Houndoom is gonna burn your ass in your sleep if you get up too late ?"
"Oh boy ! I hate that mutt, he's even crazier than his trainer," the dancer stammered in a shaky voice. "Talking of being late, maybe we should go and register, eh ? We've got to jump on the bandwagon before it rolls off without us."
Jude nodded and guided his group to the required address. They found themselves standing outside the imposing building that housed Professor Sycamore's laboratory. Its grandeur was evident as they gazed up at the towering structure. The Kalos government obviously spared no expense in building this sanctuary of research and learning. As they stepped inside, the laboratory's interior was just as impressive as its exterior. The hustle and bustle of scientists and researchers moving around in their white lab coats filled the air, creating an atmosphere of agitation and anticipation.
Unsure of where to go, Serena asked for assistance from a staff watchman stationed in plain sight. "Excuse me sir, me and my friends are here to enroll in the Pokémon League. Do you know where the registration office is ?"
"Certainly. Head up to the second floor and enter the first room on your right," he replied, pointing to a nearby staircase. "You can't miss it, it's all signposted."
Following the look-out's directions, they made their way to the right place. Upon arrival, they realized they weren't the ones on the spot. Trainers from all walks of life had gathered, forming a winding queue that snaked through the room. Joining the line, the fivesome settled in, their enthusiasm building as they exchanged whispers and glances with their fellow peers. The air was thick with a sense of determination, as each person eagerly awaited their turn to officially enlist in what would surely be the most memorable event of their lives.
Shauna's eyes widened in surprise as she counted the number of trainers. "At a rough guess, there's about sixty trainers here, not many. I thought something of this calibre would attract hundreds."
Jude nodded, offering an explanation. "Well, there are sign-up centers scattered throughout Kalos. This is just one of them. At the previous Pokémon League, there were indeed around three hundred candidates. I'm sure it'll be the same this time too."
"Plus, registration is open for a full week, so that still allows plenty of time for more people to sign up," Serena added to complete her comrade's clarification.
"Oh, I see... Say hello to competition galore."
The line gradually moved forward, each trainer stepping up to the enrolment desk, filling in the requested formalities and then being redirected to another room. Everyone could notice that each participant was given six Poké Balls and a Pokédex to aid them on their future journey. Excitement coursed through their veins as they held the tools that would document and capture their Pokémon encounters.
Finally, it was the five-pack's turn. Jude approached the desk, feeling a mix of nerves and anticipation. He handed over his details and received his trainer's equipment, a sense of pride welling up within him. The same operation happened to his four friends, all of whom felt elated to realize that they were only a stone's throw away from an unforgettable adventure.
Shauna stared at her Pokédex with a mixture of curiosity and fascination. "Guys, what's this gadget for ? Looks like a cell phone."
"It's a Pokédex, a kind of online encyclopedia that provides you with various information about Pokémon," Serena briefed her. "Then you can use this knowledge to adapt your strategies for fighting or catching them."
The five buddies followed their trainer counterparts to a spacious amphitheater, where everyone was invited to take a seat. Trevor wasn't told twice. Visibly happy to finally rest, he gratefully sank into his seat with a contented sigh. "My kingdom for a chair. I hope they'll have a lot to tell us," he muttered, relieved.
Serena, however, seemed preoccupied. She'd just cast a quick glance across the room, her eyes narrowing as she recognized a trainer she'd rather never have to see again for the rest of her life. Hardly surprising actually, as this kind of over-publicized event was precisely aimed at attracting talented trainers like her. But she had naively hoped to avoid confronting her so early in her journey. Serena decided to keep a low profile, not wanting to draw any unnecessary attention to herself.
Tierno, ever observant, noticed Serena's change in demeanor, especially since he'd figured out exactly what was causing it. He'd also spotted that incurable pester who'd tried to ruin her life at school, lurking among the candidates. For now, he too opted to remain calm and not press the issue, understanding the importance of maintaining a peaceful environment. This was neither the time nor the place to start an argument, as it might lead to their automatic disqualification.
As the murmur of emotion filled the hemicycle, a hushed silence fell over the crowd as their renowned host stepped forward, commanding the attention of all present. Professor Augustine Sycamore, one of Kalos' most famous scientists, had been recognized by many. The room buzzed with anticipation as he took center stage. "Trainers, congratulations on your entry to this major tournament," his voice boomed, carrying an air of authority. "But remember, the path to becoming a Pokémon League Champion is not an easy one."
He paused, allowing the anticipation in the room to build. The trainers leaned forward, eager to absorb every word that fell from his lips. "Now, it's time to explain the rules of this prestigious event. To participate in the Pokémon League, you must obtain eight Gym Badges from the Kalos region. These badges are earned by challenging and defeating Gym Leaders in different cities. They will be your keys to unlocking the doors of the final competition."
A murmur of utter thrill and sheer conviction rippled through the crowd. The trainers exchanged furtive glances, fully aware of the challenges that lay ahead. "However…" Augustine cautioned, "You'll have only one attempt to challenge each gym leader. Be prepared and strategize well, as failure means you'll be removed from the competition. Once you have acquired all eight badges, you will be granted the opportunity to compete in the League."
He emphasized the importance of strategy and careful planning, urging the trainers to make the most of their limited opportunity. The stakes were high, and only the strongest would emerge victorious. "The lucky ones will engage in duel matches until only one victor remains. The ultimate winner will walk away with an impressive prize of 10 million Pokédollars."
Whispers of excitement and foreboding rippled through the amphitheater. The magnitude of such a grand reward sent a thrill through the trainers' veins, igniting a burning desire to succeed. Dreams of glory and victory swirled in their minds.
"And that's not all," Professor Sycamore added, a note of passion in his voice. "The four finalists will have a unique chance to challenge the members of the Elite 4. Should they defeat one of the Elite 4, they will be offered a position among the esteemed ranks."
The trainers exchanged glances, their minds racing with possibilities. The opportunity to face off against the Elite 4, the epitome of skill and strength, was a dream many aspired to achieve. Jude understood how important the stakes were during this championship. It wasn't just a simple tournament to entertain large audiences and rake in endless cash, it was above all the Supreme Monarch's way of meticulously selecting those who would rule Kalos at its side, and those it could now dispense with. Might makes right in its purest tradition – that's what the Pokémon League embodied.
The august host concluded with a reassuring smile. "Trainers, I have faith in each and every one of you. The journey ahead will test your resolve, but remember to embrace the joy of training, the bonds with your Pokémon, and the camaraderie with fellow trainers. May you all find success in your pursuit of greatness."
Applause erupted throughout the hemicycle as the crowd cheered in unison, their spirits ignited by the professor's words. Jude and Shauna exchanged delighted looks. The path to victory was set before them, and together they would face the challenges and battles that awaited. The guests were now invited to leave the premises quietly. Shauna's curiosity took hold as she tugged at Jude's hand, dragging him towards another laboratory wing.
"Come on, let's take a tour." Jude was caught off guard by his partner's enthusiasm, but he willingly followed her lead. The vast facility sprawled before them, filled with various rooms, cutting-edge technologies, and sections dedicated to the study of Pokémon. Shauna's eyes widened as she darted from one display to another, marveling at the simulated habitats and detailed exhibits. "Dude, look at this !" Shauna exclaimed, pointing towards a glass case housing two mysterious stones. These artifacts emitted an unusual energy, capturing her full rapt attention. "I've never seen such big jewels. Do you think they're as expensive as a house ?"
Jude leaned closer, examining the items with keen interest. "I've already heard about it during my high school years. It's not jewelry, but a Mega Stone and a Key Stone," he clarified. "They allow Pokémon to tap into hidden reserves of power, evolving temporarily into an even more formidable form during battle. Scientists call this phenomenon Mega Evolution."
Shauna's eyes lit up with excitement. "Ah yes, I've seen that before during Pokémon matches on TV. It was bloody impressive, but I didn't realize those stones had a hand in it."
"They're necessary, but not enough for the transformation to be perfect," echoed a familiar voice behind the duo. Both turned to face the head honcho of this fantastic research institute. With his aura of prestige and wisdom, the respected Professor Sycamore came to meet the two budding trainers. Shauna was astonished that such a notorious personality approached them so nonchalantly, and even more so when she saw him extend his hand to Jude like an old acquaintance. "Mister Sharp, nice to see you again. I knew I'd identified you in the audience. I was sure I'd find you among the candidates."
Jude shook the scientist's hand, a sense of nostalgia washing over him. "Indeed, Professor. Glad to see you back too, but please, just call me Jude. I'm only seventeen, so Mister Sharp is a more appropriate title for my father."
Shauna, her interest piqued, chimed in with a playful grin. "Dude, you never told me you were hooking up with the bigwigs. How'd you get to know someone so famous ?"
Jude chuckled, finding himself fondly reminiscing about his days as a student. "It happened during my time at the Royal Academy. Professor Sycamore was part of our teaching staff and he was my main instructor during my last two years of school there. I owe him a lot for the foundations he laid for me."
"Don't be that modest, all I've done is help you unfold your full potential. And who is this charming young lady accompanying you ?"
Shauna blushed at the compliment, so flattered that such a good-looking man should refer to her that way. "I'm Shauna, and I'm taking part in the tournament too. It's a pleasure to meet you, Professor."
"The pleasure is all mine," Augustine replied with a naturally charming manner. "You seem quite interested in those Mega Stones. Would you like to know more about them ?"
Shauna nodded eagerly. "Yes, please ! They look so fascinating."
The professor's eyes sparkled with enthusiasm as he began to explain. "As Jude mentioned, Mega Evolution is a powerful transformation that occurs during battle. These stones are essential for triggering the process, but simply using them is insufficient. Mega Evolution requires a deep bond and understanding between trainer and Pokémon, it's not something that can be used casually. Should you choose to pursue this path, it will undoubtedly present its own set of challenges and rewards."
Shauna listened intently, intrigued by the concept. "Obviously, I should have suspected that it wouldn't be as easy as it sounds when we see the pros performing it on demand." Anyway, she figured that if she hoped to stand a chance against the titans of this meritocratic championship, she'd have no choice but to master this power sooner or later.
As they conversed, Jude noticed a figure standing a few steps behind Augustine, observing the interaction quietly. A sense of recognition washed over Jude as he locked eyes with the individual. He'd just identified Alain, another former student of the Royal Academy. Three years his senior, the young man hadn't changed much since Jude had last seen him. He still wore his trademark blue scarf and was equally reserved. But behind this man of few words lurked an extraordinary Pokémon trainer. Jude had seen him in action on several occasions, and his skills were no longer in doubt.
If Alain also entered the Kalos League as Jude surmised, he would have a truly formidable opponent to face. It would be a daunting challenge, but Jude wasn't backing down just yet. He saluted his elder comrade, as was customary among Royal Academy graduates. "Alain," Jude greeted soberly, a mixture of respect and apprehension in his voice. "No surprise to find you here. Working with Professor Sycamore, I presume ?"
Alain nodded, his stoic demeanor unwavering. "Indeed, Jude. Mister Sycamore recognized my abilities and invited me to join his team two years ago. We have a shared passion for Pokémon and their potential."
Jude clearly acknowledged his colleague's ambition. Alain spoke little but acted much. After winning the top diploma in his class, he was now involved with the most distinguished scientist in Kalos. And it certainly wouldn't end there, as he was now surely aiming for first place in the tournament, as well as an Elite 4 berth. His burning desire to climb the ladder of influence made him a rival not to be trifled with. Despite Alain's attempt to conceal it through his low-key, unassuming attitude, his aura of strength and commitment was ever palpable. Even Shauna seemed to have sensed it, casting worried glances in his direction in-between chats with the Professor.
Considering it long past time to get back to work, Augustine gently let the others know. "Well, I would gladly have stayed to talk with you longer, but I have a very busy schedule and duty calls. Jude, Shauna, your best of luck."
Then he and Alain left for a staff-only section of the facility. Jude and Shauna assumed they too had wandered around enough for the day and opted to clear out. They made their way through the laboratory corridors in search of their friends. It didn't take long for them to spot Trevor and Tierno, who seemed to be searching for someone themselves. Their faces were gloomy, which didn't ease Shauna's mind. "Hey, guys ! Have you seen Serena ?" she asked, her voice tinged with concern.
Trevor's brows furrowed, nervousness etched on his face. "No, she vanished right after we left the amphitheater. We've been looking for her ever since. We're starting to get really worried."
Just as they exchanged concerned glances, a soft sound reached their ears. "Psst, I'm over here," Serena whispered, her voice barely audible and laced with anxiety. The four friends followed the sound and discovered Serena tucked away in a nearby alcove. Her eyes were filled with apprehension, as if she were hiding from something—or someone.
Understanding what was going on, Tierno preferred to get straight to the point. "You're trying to avoid Astrid, right ? I too spotted her in the throng of attendees, quite a bad surprise."
"Yes, unfortunately you're right," Serena sadly admitted. "She's here and I don't wish to have anything to do with her."
Her partners easily understood this, knowing how obnoxious Astrid could be. During their high-school years, she gained notoriety for her bullying habits, adoring to verbally and psychologically belittle anyone who displeased her. She never engaged in physical combat herself, preferring to rely on her brutish Pokémon. Just like their trainer, they were mean and merciless. Astrid had had various punchbags, but Serena remained her favorite victim. No matter how difficult it was to intimidate her with Tierno and Shauna constantly standing in the way, she never really gave her a break.
Serena knew that if she came across her, Astrid couldn't resist putting her down. Her devaluing words would doubtless pierce her confidence. Aware of his friend's distress, Jude motioned for his pals to flee the scene before the pest-in-chief saw them. Shauna would have preferred a traditional ass-kicking, but this fragile object-filled lab wasn't exactly the best place for that. They set off as discreetly as a group of five could, but fate had other plans. Just as they were about to reach the exit, a voice pierced the air, dripping with mockery.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't Serena, the weakling. You planned to leave without greeting me, how rude of you," Astrid taunted, her voice dripping with arrogance and disdain. "So, you have the audacity to insult our region's Pokémon League with your mere presence. I thought you had enough sense to stay away from a competition you clearly have no business being in."
Serena's shoulders slumped, her self-esteem wavering under Astrid's cutting words. She felt the weight of doubt pressing down on her, but deep down, a flicker of determination remained. Shauna's anger flared upon when she heard Astrid insulting her best friend. Unlike Serena, she showed no fear towards this petty thug and promptly fired back at her provocations. "Beat it and go suck a Cacnea, blondie ! You have no right to judge her or anyone else."
Astrid smirked, thoroughly enjoying the confrontation. "Oh, Shauna, the loser's Watchog. So much tension in such a tiny body, watch out for heart attack."
"My tiny body will smash your loudmouth so hard that even a Jynx will look attractive compared to you !"
Clenching her fists tightly, Shauna prepared to carry out her threat. She may look puny on the surface, but she wasn't afraid to lash out if necessary. However, she was immediately stopped by Jude, who urged her to keep still by putting a hand on her shoulder. "Don't do that, that's exactly what she wants. Candidates can engage in Pokémon duels, but they're not allowed to assault each other directly. If you hit her, you might be automatically eliminated."
Reluctantly, Shauna took a deep breath, trying to control her wrath. She knew her partner was right, and that rearranging Astrid's face would cost her her place in the tournament. How stupid it would be to be banned for such a silly reason. Plus, their quarrel was beginning to attract more and more people's attention, offering Astrid ample witnesses she could use to prove her case.
"You heard your boyfriend, so get back in your kennel," Astrid sneered condescendingly. "As for you, Serena, I hate amateurs who think they can play in the big league. How about we settle this once and for all with a Pokémon battle ? Just to show everyone where you truly stand."
Tierno stepped forward, his voice filled with concern. "Serena, you don't have to do this. Don't let her provoke you, it's not worth it. Let's ignore her and go."
Serena's unwillingness was palpable, but a fire ignited within her. She couldn't let Astrid's scoffs go unanswered. With a resolute tone, she accepted the challenge. "No, Tierno. I can no longer fix this problem by shunning it. It's time to face her head-on and prove that I have what it takes. Astrid, let's battle."
"That's what I wanted to hear. Prepare to lose in the most shameful way."
Since Pokémon fighting was strictly forbidden in the laboratory, Jude motioned for the group to follow him outside. He knew of a perfect place for this duel to be conducted in the proper manner. With a newfound sense of purpose, Serena mentally prepared herself to defend her and her Fennekin's dignity. Should she succeed in getting the better of the girl who had constantly looked down on her, she'd have taken a major step forward in her trainer's vocation. Yet, she was well aware of her future adversary's abilities, and willpower alone would surely not suffice to defeat her.
Back at their respective jobs, the usual workflow between Sycamore and Alain resumed, but the young hire had a bit of trouble staying focused. He couldn't shake off the curiosity that had arisen when he saw Jude among the Pokémon League registrants. As far as he could remember, Jude had always been a gifted student, but he was more concerned with economics and mathematics than Pokémon. He had never seen him accompanied by a Pokémon, let alone involved in a Pokémon duel. This puzzled him and he needed answers. The ideal man to deliver them was his boss. Unlike him, he wasn't the least bit stunned. Quite the contrary, he'd expected Jude to join the event.
"Professor, I have to admit, I'm surprised to see Jude here. I watched him during our school years and he never showed any inclination for Pokémon battles. Hardly the kind of profile you'd expect from a League competitor, don't you think ?"
Augustine smiled knowingly, his eyes glinting with a hint of mystery. "Ah, yes. Jude's interest in this field is a recent development. This happened after you left the Royal Academy, about two years ago. He suddenly came to me and asked if I could share my knowledge of Pokémon training with him."
Alain's inquisitive mind only grew, and he probed further, "Really ? Do you know why ?"
The professor's expression softened, a touch of nostalgia in his voice. "I'm not entirely sure myself. Jude didn't share the reason behind his request, but I could see a newfound passion in his eyes. He was determined to learn everything he could about Pokémon and battling. I can only speculate, but I believe his father might have played a role in it."
Despite his desire to keep his emotions in check, the mention of Jude's father sent an uncontrolled shiver down Alain's spine. He'd heard many blood-curdling tales about Ray Sharp and the ghoulish aura he exuded. He was a powerful industrialist who ruled the building and retail markets. Rumor spread that, among all the Kalos dignitaries, Ray was THE figure never to be crossed, on pain of seeing his life utterly shattered. Even the Elite 4 feared this iron-fisted mogul and rarely got involved in his business.
Alain almost felt sorry for Jude, having to live with someone so creepy on a daily basis. But the main topic he had to worry about was that he now had a new rival to keep a close eye on. He knew that the Pokémon League would be a test of strength and resolve, and he wondered how the young Sharp would fare in such a high-stakes competition. Alain was sure of one thing, however : if Jude had to face anyone in the final round, it would be him and nobody else.
To be continued
