I went over to him and gave him a kiss on his cheek. I then went to meet up with the girls in the pit. But I know something is bothering him. But what?
"Hey, what's going on?" Chris asked me.
"Hey. You ready to go?" I asked, heading to the doors.
I want to talk to the girls, but not with all these people. I don't like many people eavesdropping on what I have to say. We then jumped on the train. Luckily for us, it was just us. I then looked at the girls and said,
"Four is hiding something from me. I don't know what."
"What do you mean?" Lauren asked me.
"He had a last-minute meeting to get to this morning. When he came back, something seemed off. I could tell something was bothering him. He also lied to me about the meeting. I just don't know why he would do that." I told them.
"Maybe he has something romantic planned for you guys, and it's a surprise," Chris suggested.
"I don't think so. Lauren, you are his sister. What do you think?" I asked her.
"Who did he meet up for the meeting?" She asked me.
"The headmistress and Max." I answered her.
"Sorry, Chris. I am with Tris on this one. It doesn't have to be anything romantic for them. He would have told me. I haven't heard a thing. Something is up. Mostly, if he meets up with those two early in the morning." Lauren said.
"We will help you figure out what he is hiding." Myra told me.
"Not yet. I will ask him about it later when we are alone." I told them.
I looked out and saw we were close to the school. I do have great friends. I know they won't leave it alone. But they will be doing it in all good. They will wait until I want to know what they find out. But I will wait for that until I talk to Four myself.
We jumped off the train. I landed on my feet pretty well. We then headed to school. We saw the guys waiting there for us. Four were with them. He looked like he had walked here. He only does that when he needs to think.
The day has gone by routine. As normal as Dauntless could be. I headed back to the Dauntless compound for lunch. I just wanted to get away from people. Also, I need to grab a book for my next class. Looks like it might be the perfect timing, too. I went into Four's room to get my book. Look who is here?
"Hey, you. I haven't seen you since this morning." I said.
"Yeah. I have been business. You okay?" He asked.
"I should be asking you that question. Are you okay? Because something seems to be bothering you." I said to him.
"You could always read me pretty good." He said, giving me a smile.
"It's a gift." I said. "What is bothering you? Maybe I can help."
"Just something the headmistress asked for me. More like ordered. I can't go against it. Or talk about it. Sorry, Tris." He told me.
"That's okay. I don't want to get you into trouble. But if you were in trouble, you would tell me. I trust you." I told him.
I could tell something changed in him. He looked up at me and came over to me. He gave me a kiss on the lips. He then pulled away and said,
"You are the best thing in my life. I never want to ruin that. Or lose you. You know that."
"Yeah, I know. You are what is best in my life." I told him.
"With what is bothering me, I will tell you quickly. Just right now, I can't. I am really sorry about that." He told me.
"Okay. I understand." I told him truthfully.
I can tell he wants to say to me. But if it's orders from the headmistress, then he can't. I know he will say to me in good timing. But can't help but think it has to do something with me. I know it's strange. But I don't know. Just how he was acting.
*Four's POV*
"Let's go get some lunch. Before it's over." I suggested.
"Sure." She said, smiling at me.
We then headed to get some lunch. But I couldn't stop thinking about the situation. Tris was in danger, and there wasn't much I could do right now. I want to tell her to make sure she is protected right. But I can't. I can't even say to our friends. Who can help protect her?
I am going to have a talk with the headmistress. If I can't tell Tris about it. At least let me tell a few of our friends. So they could help me protect her. If not, I am going to break her rule and tell someone. Because I can't keep this one to myself and not exact not to lose my mind.
I was between classes, so I took this time to talk to the headmistress. I went to her office. The secretary looked up from her computer when she saw me come in. She gave me a smile. Then asked,
"What can I help you with, Four?"
The secretary knows me well because I am always in the office to see the headmistress for stuff for the school or dauntless. Or I have a meeting with Max and the headmistress. I then answered her,
"I need to talk to the headmistress. It's important."
"She is in a meeting. But I don't know how long she is going to be. So, if you want, you can leave her a message." She told me. She then slides a notepad to me with a pen.
I know this was her excellent way to say I can't stay, and she would not disturb the headmistress. I knew I wasn't going to win this one. So, I just took the notepad and pen and wrote,
I am going to tell others. I can't do this alone. She knows something is up. If there is a problem, call me.
Four
I then folded it and handed it back to her. I then gave her a small smile for her kindness. She then said,
"I will give her this as soon as she finishes her meeting. You have a good."
"Thanks. You have a good day as well."
When I left the office, I pulled out my phone and chatted with my friends.
We all need to meet up by the chaos after school. Don't tell Tris. -Four
Okay. Will be there. -Zeke
Why no Tris? -Chris
Will explain when we meet up. -Four
You know she will know something is up if we all are missing. -Lauren
Will be there. -Will
Deal. And Myra is in. – Edward
I never thought of that. Maybe one of our friends can keep her distracted. I texted in the group chat.
Where are you, Lauren? Maybe you can help with that. -Four
Library. -Lauren
Lynn, Shauna, and I are in. -Marlene
Confused about why. But I am there. -Uriah
I then headed to the library. I saw Lauren sitting at one of the tables. I went over to her. I sat down across from her.
"So, what is up with all of the secretively? Is everything okay? You have your worried face on." Lauren asked me.
"First thing, is Tris not nearby?" I asked her.
"No. She is in class." Lauren told me.
"Okay. So, here is what is going on. You probably know about me meeting with Max and the headmistress this morning." I was saying.
"Yeah, Tris told us. She said you were acting weird afterward. I can see what she is talking about. You are acting weird and off right now. What is going on?" She asked.
"This has to stay between the people in the group chat. You know about the Bureau and what they are doing?" I asked her.
"That's the group that is taking Divergent for some reason. Why?" She asked.
"That group of people that have been kidnapping Divergent worldwide. They are looking for a current person. We didn't know who at first. But now we do. It's one of us. They're in our faction. Dauntless. It's Tris." I told her.
"Wait… What? She is the one they are looking for. Really? I take that she doesn't know." She asked.
"No. The headmistress doesn't want her to know. But she wants her to be protected. But I can't do this alone. Tris already knows something is up. I hate lying to her. But if it protects her, then I will do it." I told her truthfully.
"She would understand. I am so in to help you. I know everyone would, too. But the hard part is going to keep it from her. What does the headmistress think this will help by not telling her?" She asked me.
"I don't know. I am just following her orders. But thanks for agreeing to help me. Thanks for keeping her distracted later." I told her.
Then, the bell rang for classes. I got up and headed to my next class. Lauren followed right behind me. So, I know the headmistress won't agree with them all-knowing. But sometimes, you must beg for forgiveness and then ask for permission. I will do anything to keep Tris safe. With our friends' help, we should be able to do so too.
