5: putting a spirit to rest
Now that we had the other half of the broken amulet Ginny, Luna, and I made our way back through the graveyard. Along the way, we fought 2 "Crazed Beggar" and 3 rats. After the fight, we found 2 hide caps and an iron helm. I gave the helmet to Ginny and 1 of the hide caps to Luna.
The rest of the trip back to Farhaven was uneventful and at last, we reentered FarHaven.
I had some problems running out of Mana during our last fight, so I led the other girls to the tavern.
Upon entering the tavern I spoke with Samual asking about renting a room. He told me the south large bedroom was free. So I led the girls into the hallway and walked straight to the first door on the left.
Before resting in the bed I searched the desk and found a "Makeshift Amulet" Storing the amulet in my pack the 3 of us slept in the bed recovering our mana and stamina. As well as our health.
After waking up we left the room and examined the next bedroom to the north. After telling the girls "This is where I found the first half of the broken amulet" I searched the desk. Thankfully I found an "Initiate's Amulet" and a "Ring of Smoke". After placing them in my pack we returned to the front room of the tavern. After looking around the tavern's main room for a bit we exited the tavern.
Now that I had the second half of the amulet I decided to pay a visit to the temple. Hopefully, Father Ignatius had found the information he needed to repair the amulet.
I led the girls away from the tavern and turned north. After passing the fountain I turned east toward the temple itself. Reaching the temple I walked through the double doors into the chapel and faced Father Ignatius.
"Sister Alexia! Praise the Divine, you're alright. We've been so worried."
Luna gives the father a warm and gentle smile. "Forgive me, Father. It was never my intention to cause you distress. I only did what I thought was right."
Father Ignatius returns the smile. "Well, no matter. You're safe now, and back where you belong."
Luna shakes her head. "Yes, I am safe - thanks to the grace of the Divine and the valor of my companions. But I am not returning to the Temple."
Father Ignatius looks confused. "What? I don't understand."
Luna squares her shoulders in determination. "If I have learned one thing in my time away from the safety of these walls, it is that I can not sit idly when darkness spreads. I cannot return - not until I have helped to uncover the evil that is upon us, in whatever way I can."
Father Ignatius sighs. "It is for you to discover your path, my child. I do wish it was a safer path...but who am I to fathom the plans of the Divine?"
Father Ignatius turns to me. "You have my blessing, traveler. I know we have you to thank for Sister Alexia's continued safety. Go with the grace of the Divine upon you."
As he speaks I feel my mana reserves grow slightly. On top of that new words flash in gold over my head. "The quest, The Good Shepherd, completed. Father Ignatius can rest easy, knowing that Alexia is safe." Mentally dismissing the words I turn back to the father. "Father I have the rest of the amulet. Have you learned how to repair it?"
Father Ignatius nods. "I have. I've already sent instructions to the armorer - you'll need to bring him the pieces of the amulet. Once it's repaired, bring it back here, and we'll see about putting that spirit to rest."
Excepting the first half of the amulet back from Father Ignatius I thank him, and exit the temple. The girls followed behind me.
The girls and I make our way back toward the potion stand I passed through the first time I visited the blacksmith. Finding the gate that led into the forge I walk up to Jerome.
"What's your pleasure, my friend?"
I pull out the 2 halves of the amulet. "Father Ignatius said you could repair this amulet?"
Jerome nods. "Yes, he sent very detailed instructions. The process is tricky, but you're in luck - I doubt many smiths could pull this off. I'll just take those pieces..." Jerome works on the amulet pieces fordging the 2 back into 1 hold. "There you go. Good as new. Since this is a favor for the good Father, it's free of charge." He hands the repaired amulet to me. "Now, was there anything else I could help you with?"
Shaking my head I thank Jerome and leave the bordge. As we leave the forge I notice that Ginny lags behind, she seems lost in thought. "Is everything alright, Ginny? You look thoughtful."
Ginny starts. "Sorry. I was just thinking about that amulet... It meant so much to someone that they're haunting the inn just to get it back."
I nod. "Yes, they must have truly treasured it."
Ginny sighs. "I think it's sweet. Makes you think maybe love really does live on after death."
I smile at her. "You may be right. That's why we have to get this amulet back to the priest."
After our conversation, I lead the girls back to the temple. As we enter the chapel I can't help but feel a fight is coming up. Forcing down my misgivings I turn to the father and pull out the repaired amulet. "Father I have had the amulet repaired. What do we do now?"
Father Ignatius straightens up from praying at the altar. "I've prepared a special blessing. If you'll let me see the amulet, I'll..." Without warning an otherworldly moan is heard. "The spirit - it's here! Divine light, protect us!"
The spirit of a young woman appears. I and the girls draw our weapons as Father Ignatius pulls out a staff.
Apparently, I go first. Glancing at my system screen I see this enemy is known as a "Restless Shade". Deciding not to hold back I prepare a "Firebgolt" to attack the shade with.
Ginny recognizing that her sword won't hurt a spirit prepares her own "Firebolt".
Luna after getting over the shock of a spirit just showing up in the temple prepares her "Light of Purity" spell.
I don't know why but Father Ignatius cast a spell on me. It didn't hurt me in any way, but it also didn't enhance me in any way. Did he cast a healing spell on me? At the start of a battle? that didn't help much.
My "Firebolt" hits the shade. I see a 17 appear over the shade's head.
Luna fires a beam of light at the shade, but it dodges out of the way.
Before anything else happens I prepare another "Firebolt", and I watch as Luna prepares another "Light of Purity".
Before anyone can react the shade launches bolts of lightning at all 3 of us. I take 64 damage leaving me with 38 health. Ginny also takes 64 damage leaving her with 43 health. Luna takes 46 damage leaving her with 61 health.
Angered at what happened to her friends Ginny launches a Firebolt at the shade. As it hits I see a 20 appear over the shade's head.
Father Ignatius focuses, regaining his mp. I hope he starts doing something to help us soon.
I launch another Firebolt at the shade. Causing a 9 to appear over their head.
Luna tries to attack the shade with a beam of light but misses again.
The shade casts a curse on Father Ignatius.
Father Ignatius this time casts a spell on the group. I'm not sure what it does, but I do know it doesn't hurt.
Ginny's Firebolt hits the shade causing 11 to appear over the shade's head.
My own Firebolt hits the shade causing an 8 to appear over the shade's head. How much more is this going to take?
Luna lays a hand on me healing me for 64 damage.
Ginny rests.
I prepare another Firebolt.
The shade casts another spell. It misses Ginny and me, but hits Luna for 36 damage, and Father Ignatius for 9.
Father Ignatius fires a beam of light at the shade hitting it and causing the shade to recover 14 health.
I launch a Firebolt at the shade causing a 9 to appear over the shade's head.
Ginny rests recovering 6 mana.
Luna lays hands on Ginny recovering 64 health.
The shade casts a spell at Father Ignatius. It hits causing 14 damage.
Father Ignatius casts another beam of light at the shade. It hits, but once again it heals the shade for 15. Stop healing the shade, Father!
I launch another Firebolt at the shade causing a 9 to appear over the shade's head.
Luna drinks 1 of my potions recovering 75 health.
The shade casts a spell to drain mana from Father Ignatius.
Father Ignatius focuses, regaining 150 mana.
Ginny rested regaining 6 mana.
I launch a firebolt at the shade causing a 9 to appear over their head.
Father Ignatius casts another spell on the group. Just like the last, I have no idea what this does.
Luna gives Ginny a potion that recovers 75 mana.
The shade rested recovering 17 mana.
I launch a Firebolt at the shade causing an 8 to appear over their head. The shade isn't looking too good.
Father Ignatius fires a beam of light at the shade. I think to myself "Oh no! There goes all my hard work". However, I was wrong. When the beam of light hits the shade a 47 appears over their head. The shade looks seriously wounded.
I launch another Firebolt at the shade causing a 9 to appear over their head.
I feel a spell fading from me. Looking over I notice the same spell fading from Ginny, Luna, and Father Ignatius.
Father Ignatius fires another beam of light at the shade. As it hits a 94 appears over the shade's head before they disappear.
As the spirit disappears Father Ignatius smiles. "It's done. I think that by releasing its anger, the spirit was finally able to find rest. Are you alright? You look...well, like you've seen a ghost, I suppose."
I feel somewhat strange. What was that? "Something strange happened while we were fighting. I felt as if the spirit poured something into me."
Father Ignatius examines me with interest. "Interesting. The spirit may have transferred some of its own energy to you. Perhaps, in the end, it realized that we were only trying to help it."
As Father Ignatius turns back to the altar I glance up at the flashing gold words. "The quest, Trouble Sleeping, completed. After attacking us at the temple, the ghost is finally at rest. Guests in the tavern can sleep easy now."
In addition, I have awakened a new ability. "Blessed Peace". "A wave of holy radiance with a chance of preventing foes from attacking." This would come in handy in the graveyard. However, I think we will head for the northern gate next. I still have that quest from Madeline to complete.

An: and that's the end of this chapter. The innkeeper can rest easier now that the spirit will no longer be haunting his tavern.
Next chapter Ivy starts working on the quest Madeline gave her, along with a new quest a hunter gives her.
