Chapter 5: Nothing Too Far

Gary, Callie, Podcast, Phoebe, Trevor, Oscar, Ronnie, and Jeanette were seated at the table forty-five minutes later. They were in the same places as they had been during breakfast. Ronnie and Jeanette emitted soft chuckle as Gary talked about the box office success of Titanic. Callie grabbed a tea-filled glass. She sipped a tiny bit of it before putting it down.

"Titanic was where the expression 'Never underestimate James Cameron' was born," Gary said, holding out his hands. "Many people thought it would be a big financial disappointment. It was the most expensive movie at the time of its release. Its budget was two hundred million dollars."

"It opened at twenty-eight million dollars in the domestic box office. It ended its run there at over six hundred million dollars," Oscar added.

"It was the first movie to gross over a billion dollars worldwide. It held the number one spot on the list of the highest grossing films of all time until Avatar. Avatar was the first movie to gross over two billion dollars," Podcast said, laying his arm on the table.

"To this day, fifty-three movies have grossed over a billion while six have grossed over two billion," Phoebe whispered as she cupped her chin in her hand.

"Many people thought that Avatar: The Way of Water would flop because thirteen years had passed since the release of Avatar. They were cheering when it did not gross as much as it was projected to in its opening weekend. Then it exploded. It reached one billion in two weeks. It reached two billion four weeks later. It became the third-highest grossing movie of all time," Ronnie explained.

"It was hilarious seeing the haters go silent after its immense success," Jeanette said, giggling to herself.

"Mom dragged me to see Titanic and Avatar. I thought I would hate both movies, but I actually enjoyed them. I left Trevor and Phoebe with a babysitter because Dino went to a party with some friends," Callie pointed out with a heavy sigh. She shook her head in disbelief. "He almost always put himself before his family after Phoebe was born."

"Then you discovered he had cheated on you with several women after Grandma died," Trevor added, scoffing in irritation. "I actually don't feel bad for the mistress who lost her baby. I hope that does not make me a bad person."

"Never. Your feelings are understandable," Gary said.

"You are lucky you managed to snag a second husband in your forties, Callie," Jeanette said, crossing her arms. "Many men would rather go for younger women."

"Sometimes, the women are two or more decades younger than the men are. That doesn't mean the relationship will be problematic," Ronnie commented. "However, many younger women go after older men for one thing. That is money."

"Greed and selfishness have always been part of humanity," Oscar said while propping his head up with elbow. "They seem worse now than they have been at any given moment in history."

"That's because there are so many people in this world now," Callie muttered and gritted her teeth. "They want everything at once. When they do not get it, they throw giant fits."

Phoebe rolled her eyes. She couldn't understand why people had to be so impatient. She admitted she was like that on rare occasions, as were her brother, her parents, and her friends. They tried not to be, but there were times they couldn't help it. She folded her hands and laid them on the table. She twirled her thumbs around.

"It sucked when Lucky couldn't come to the baby shower two weeks ago because she was visiting her dad in Summerville. She is bringing her gift here. I wonder what it will be," Phoebe commented, her voice laced with much curiosity.

"Who knows?" Podcast wondered with a shrug.

Gary chuckled. "You and Podcast got a lot of baby gifts, Pheebs. That includes baby clothes and diapers."

"Newborn and preemie clothes and diapers weren't around when I was a baby. Doll clothes and cutup cloth diapers were used to dress and diaper preemies. It was not until 1993 the items came into existence," Callie explained.

"I can see why some parents buy a lot of preemie clothes and diapers. They just want to be prepared," Trevor said, picking up an orange juice-filled cup. He took a long sip. He laid it down, a soft sigh leaving his mouth. "You never know what could happen."

Callie ran her tongue all over her teeth. "Gary and I bought a number of preemie clothes and diapers."

"I can never forget being really scared when I started having those terrible pains in my stomach. I thought I was going into premature labor," Phoebe said, feeling her body shake.

"Thank God that it turned out to be Braxton-Hicks contractions," Callie whispered, sighing in relief. "I had them with both of you."

"Was the pain really bad?" Trevor wondered.

"The pain wasn't bad with you, Trev. It was slightly worse with your sister," Callie admitted. "Every pregnancy is—"

"Different," Phoebe finished.

"Since when did you start finishing my sentences, Pheebs?" Callie asked, glancing at her.

Phoebe giggled. "Since now."

Callie waved her daughter off. She spoke gibberish when Phoebe imitated her. She rubbed her neck, a soft groan leaving her mouth. She clenched her teeth somewhat tightly.

"If there is one thing I hate, it's sudden pains coming on," Callie grumbled in irritation.

"Here," Gary whispered, reaching over and massaging her neck.

"Oh, that feels good," Callie replied, her voice showing relief. "You should become a massage therapist."

"I am not giving up ghostbusting to massage sore muscles," Gary said, shaking his head rapidly. "No way, no how."

Phoebe smirked. "Maybe you should become a baker. You are great at baking cakes and pies."

"I will on one condition. You have to become a baker with me," Gary teased.

"No, thank you," Phoebe said with a shake of her head.

"Spoilsport," Gary grumbled as he finished massaging Callie's neck.

"I heard that, Dad!" Phoebe blurted out.

Gary chuckled in a nervous way. "That kid's got good hearing."

Suddenly, the doorbell rang loudly. Gary, Callie, Podcast, Phoebe, Trevor, Jeanette, and Ronnie jumped in their seats. Their hearts beat a little fast. They looked toward the doorway.

"Who could be at the door?" Ronnie wondered.

"Maybe it was a kid who rang the doorbell and ran off," Trevor suggested.

"I don't think a kid would be stupid enough to do that with so many witnesses around. This is Downtown New York City after all," Phoebe pointed out seriously.

"Good point, sis," Trevor agreed.

"I am going to check it out," Gary said, standing up and walking away.

"I will go with you," Callie added, getting up.

"Be my guest," Gary said and waved his hand toward himself. "Come on."

Gary and Callie headed out of the kitchen. They went down the stairs and approached the doors. They didn't see their children and friends following them and stopping at the top of the stairs. They looked at each other.

"Who should open the door?" Gary asked with a raised eyebrow.

"How about you? I did it last time," Calle responded.

He nodded at her. "Okay."

Gary touched the doorknob. He turned it and opened the door slowly. He found Ray, Winston, Peter, Dana, and Lucky standing before it. Lucky had a gift bag in her hand. Ray furrowed his brow.

"What is with you opening the door slowly, Gary? This visit is wasting away," Ray said with a laugh.

"Ray, it's great to see you and the others," Gary replied, happiness lining his voice. "We didn't think you'd show up this soon."

"You can blame the light traffic for that," Winston responded while slipping his hands inside his pockets.

"If only every day could be Saturday," Lucky added.

"Come on in," Callie said, waving her hand toward herself.

The couple stepped aside, allowing Ray, Winston, Lucky, Peter, and Dana to come in. Gary closed the door. Dana walked over to the front of Ecto-1. She looked around as Peter came to her side.

"I can't believe it's been three decades since I have been in here," Dana whispered in amazement. "I remember coming in here and asking you for help concerning that creepy ghost in my first apartment."

"You were our very first client," Peter said, putting his arm around her.

"You were skeptical about the paranormal, but you were convinced something was in your apartment as you've said a million times, Mom," Oscar said, walking up to his parents with Trevor, Phoebe, Podcast, Ronnie, and Jeanette right behind him.

"Hi, honey," Dana greeted, giving him a big hug. She giggled at his hugging her back. She pulled back to look at him. She peered at Trevor, Podcast, and Phoebe going to Ray, Winston, and Lucky in the corner of her eye. "It is obvious you saw some action this morning."

"What incredible action it was," Jeanette admitted, coming to her brother's side along with her sister.

"It involved a dragon flying all over the interstate. Oscar, Gary, Callie, and Trevor were able to keep up with it due to the reduced traffic. Oscar and Callie took care of it, though it was tricky to catch," Ronnie explained.

"Ronnie, you are supposed to call Gary and Callie by their last names," Dana scolded.

"Mom, that applied to us when we were kids. We're adults now," Ronnie said truthfully. She rubbed her eyes. "What's the harm calling them by their first names?"

"Besides, Gary scolded me for calling him and Callie by their last names," Oscar added, putting his hands behind his back. "I decided to stop that. It's time to embrace it."

Dana sighed heavily. She considered it polite for children to call most of their elders by their last names, but she had to admit Oscar and Ronnie were right. She considered them to be very wise, especially when it came to certain matters. She nodded at them.

"Okay. You can call Gary and Callie by their first names. You might as well do the same for everyone else here since they are like family," Dana said, laughing softly.

"Thanks," Ronnie said, hugging her along with Jeanette. "By the way, it is good to see you."

Dana smiled. "You too."

"You are becoming the perfect Ghostbuster, slugger," Peter commented as he high-fived Oscar.

"It's no thanks to Gary and Callie. They are the perfect teachers," Oscar said with a big smile on his face.

Jeanette went over to her father along with Ronnie. "Hey, what are we, chopped liver?"

"Never, darling," Peter said, looking at his daughters. He hugged them tightly. He chuckled at their hugging him back. They let go of each other. "It is good to see you."

Ronnie nodded at him. "Right back at you, Dad."

Peter and Dana looked toward the others, seeing Trevor hug Lucky. He rubbed his girlfriend's back as she wrapped her arms around his waist. They released their hold on each after thirty seconds.

"I am happy to see you, Lucky," Trevor said, smiling warmly.

"I am happy to see you too, Trev," Lucky responded sweetly.

"Don't forget us, my favorite aunt-to-be," Phoebe joked and snickered as Podcast went to her side.

"Never," Lucky said, glancing at the expectant parents. She hugged them in a careful manner. She smiled at their hugging her back. They pulled away to look at each other. She held up the bag. "Here is your belated baby shower gift."

"Thank you," Phoebe said, taking it from her. She heard the phone ringing, but she paid it no mind. Neither did her family and friends. "Thank you."

Phoebe went over to a table near Ecto-1. She set the bag on top of it and reached into it. Podcast joined her side. She moved the paper over, touching an object. She pulled out a three-pack of onesies age zero to three months and a six-pack of white socks ages zero to six months. All three onesies were light pink. The first one had dark pink flowers, the second blue birds, and the third yellow ducks.

Podcast reached into the bag in which he touched an object. He pulled out a red baseball cap with the word 'Coach' stitched into the front in yellow letters. He looked it over twice. He and his girlfriend felt tears coming to their eyes. They felt them fall as the others went over to them. Lucky put her hands behind her back, a big smile forming on her face.

"They're wonderful, Lucky," Phoebe said, glancing at her along with her boyfriend. "Thank you."

"You're welcome," Lucky answered, nodding.

Podcast put the cap on. "I have to say this is the most important coaching I will ever do."

"My daughter had a baby eight years ago," Winston said, chuckling to himself. "I was Brittany's coach during the first stage of labor because her husband was having surgery on his appendix. Alan came out just in time. He was a little loopy, but he was happy to have witnessed their son's birth. Perry is learning to draw things realistically now."

"I have no doubt he stunk up the house with his smelly diapers," Trevor commented.

Winston raised his eyebrows. "That he did. No one fainted from the smelly diapers, though Alan came close once."

"Let's not forget potty-training does not stop kids from stinking," a female voice said.

Everyone turned to see Janine standing a short distance away. She walked up to the group as Phoebe placed the baby clothes back in the bag.

"How long have you been standing there, Janine?" Ray wondered.

"Long enough to see Podcast and Phoebe get their late gifts and hear about Perry, Ray," Janine said, a soft giggle coming from her. "By the way, it's good to see you, Winston, Peter, Dana, and Lucky."

"Back at you, Janine," Peter said, pointing his finger in the shape of a gun.

"I hate to interrupt this visit, but I just got a call about a haunting at 211 Hyland Dr. It isn't far from downtown," Janine said, holding up a notepad. She eyed Gary as he went to her. "A gentleman named Harry Lyman said a ghost won't stop playing pranks on his family. It's disrupting their daily routine. His wife, Rebecca, and his son, Charlie, can't take it anymore."

Gary took the notepad from his friend and looked the notes over. He ran his tongue all over the inside of his mouth. He shifted his attention toward Trevor. He took the keys out of his pocket.

"Trev, why don't you lead this assignment?" Gary suggested, tossing the keys and the notepad to his son.

"Really, Dad?" Trevor said surprisingly as he caught the objects.

"Why not? It's about time you act as a leader," Gary said while holding his arms out to the sides. "You've done a great job acting as a mentor to Oscar, Jeanette, and Ronnie. Besides, your mother and I need to rest."

"We've done a lot over the last few weeks," Callie added.

"Thanks!" Trevor yelled in excitement. "Come on, Oscar. You, your sisters, and I have a mischievous ghost to bust."

"Yeah!" Oscar, Ronnie, and Jeanette blurted out delightfully.

The entire group watched the quartet rush for their lockers. Janine shook her head, her eyebrows raising. She cupped her chin in her hand. She tapped her finger against it.

"If there one thing that hasn't changed, it's the excitement of getting ready to bust a ghost," Janine commented.

"The memories of that will never fade away," Ray said, warmth showing in his voice.

"Anyway, why don't we head upstairs and hang out in the kitchen for a while?" Winston suggested. He smiled when the others voiced their agreement with the exception of Janine. "Okay. Let's go."

Ray, Winston, Peter, Dana, Podcast, Phoebe, Gary, and Callie went upstairs. Janine made her way toward her office while snapping her fingers.
