Not your typical YGO/HP cross, but I hope everyone enjoys it!
Perhaps it was luck, that her second cousin was visiting England for an Egyptian display. Either way, Petunia wasn't stupid enough not to ignore the obvious chance in front of her.
Her sister's daughter had been dumped on her with an implied threat towards their safety if he wasn't taken care of by someone who shared her mother's blood. Normally Petunia would have taken the girl in...except...her sister had been a witch.
Lily was perfectly nice, but Vernon couldn't stand the magical side. James Potter's behavior had ruined any chances of that on top of his own natural prejudice.
Which was why Petunia was going to use a loophole in that old coot's demands that she raise another child on top of her own. Dudley was enough of a handful already!
Solomon was nice enough, and had his grandson with him. His daughter-in-law was running the shop and there was no telling where his son had run off to.
He had looked over the random Egyptian artifact Petunia had managed to uncover at some curio shop that she had used as an excuse to get him to come while Vernon was at work.
That was when he heard the crying, and she seized her moment.
Little Nephthys seemed to snuggle up rather closely to little Yoogi, she believed his name was. Dudley was still sound asleep, thanks to some small mercy.
"So you're saying someone dumped her on you without even bothering to knock? At the beginning of November no less?" said Solomon aghast.
"They didn't even bother to break the news of Lily's death to my face. They just wrote it in a letter, vaguely implied some threat against me and my family if we didn't take her in, then left her there with a thin blanket," said Petunia, angrily. "They didn't even ask if we wanted to have her with us, or see if we had the resources to take her in, and raising children is expensive!"
Solomon was just as unhappy about that as she had been.
Seeing how easily his new grandson got along with the child, who was at least a year older than him, he decided to make the offer Petunia had hoped for.
"Why don't I adopt her? I know your husband doesn't make much, and it's ridiculous that someone dumped your niece on you. Besides, I've always wanted more grandchildren in the home," said Solomon.
The sheer look of relief on her face said volumes.
Sure it meant staying in England a few more days, but it would be worth it. Solomon would have another grandchild to spoil, Yugi would get a big sister out of the deal, and Petunia would be able to forget anything to do with magic.
Everyone won except the fool who dumped her neice on Petunia in the first place.
Solomon seemed more amused than anything that his new granddaughter had the name of an Egyptian goddess. Then again, he had been a tomb raider in his youth, so no one was likely to look too closely at who her parents were.
Fourteen years later...
In some ways, Yugi was glad Nee-san was away on a special trip to the dragon reserves for the past month. It meant he didn't have to explain why he kept getting into trouble...like that incident at Burger World. Did not mean he was oblivious to the fact he would have to face the music, but he was putting it off for as long as possible.
Anzu was vaguely aware of the fact he had an older sister, but Jounouchi and Honda were oblivious to the fact that the hugely popular Iris-sempai was his older sister.
If they had, they likely would have known better than to bully him in an attempt to make him 'man up'.
The problem was that his nee-san was due to come back any day now. And he was not looking forward to explain the blackouts. It had been awkward enough when Shadi-sensei from Egypt had shown up and had been very unhappy about the Puzzle being out and about.
Yugi still wasn't sure what the other spirit had done, but it had ratted his summer teacher pretty good. So much so he had canceled any further training, stating that the spirit would be able to teach him the rest.
"What's got you so down Yug?" asked Jounouchi. "Is it about that incident at the amusement park?"
"No...I just know she's not going to be thrilled when she gets back and hears what I've been up to. And I can't even explain the blackouts! I don't even want to think about how I'm going to explain that mess with Kaiba...either of them!" moaned Yugi.
That got their attention.
"Oh yeah, your nee-san is supposed to be back soon, isn't she?" said Anzu. She had forgotten Iris was his big sister.
Yugi nodded.
"The second nee-san hears about the things I've been up to, even if it wasn't me actually doing it, she's going to be pissed I didn't tell her sooner."
"Nee-san? Why's this the first we're hearing about an older sister?" said Honda.
"She's been in England for something for the majority of the past year or so, something about an inheritance," said Yugi. "By the way, be glad you two have stopped trying to 'toughen me up'...nee-san would have beaten you up if she had seen any of that."
"She would have...Pounce is practically her baby after all," snickered Anzu.
"Pounce?" said Jounouchi.
"Nee-san's nickname for me. She calls Anzu 'Grace' because she's such a good dancer," said Yugi.
He was likely going to be stuck as Pounce after classes for a week before Nee-san remotely began to forgive him. Though even he would admit, his animagus form was seriously adorable. Anzu had only seen it the once, and they almost had to pry her off because she kept cuddling him. Nee-san had laughed for hours, while commiserating her pain.
Needless to say, Jounouchi and Honda were interested in meeting his older sister.
Yugi was both happy and terrified...because she was going to be mad at him and he hated disappointing her.
"I'm HOOOME!"
"Nee-san!" said Yugi, glomping her.
"Hiya Pounce!" said Iris happily, hugging her little brother tightly.
"No way. No freaking way. Your big sister is Iris-sama from the class above us?!" said Jounouchi in shock.
"So...new friends Yugi?" said Iris, giving them a wary eye.
"Be nice Nee-san. They're not that bad," said Yugi.
"We'll see," said Iris.
Yugi suddenly yelped as his big sister pinched both his cheeks with a dangerous expression in her eyes.
"Now...what's this I heard from grandpa about you being in dangerous situations?!"
Anzu snickered, though she could sympathize with Iris' annoyance with Yugi for not saying anything.
"I don't believe it...Yugi's nee-san is the famous Iris-sama..." said Jounouchi, still in shock.
Honda snickered at him.
"And to think, you were mocking me about my crush on Miho-chan," said Honda. "Don't you have a bigger one on her?"
"Don't feel bad Jounouchi...everyone loves Iris," said Anzu. "Though if she likes you enough, maybe she'll let you call her by her actual name."
"Iris isn't her name?" said Jounouchi.
"It's her middle name. Her first one is too hard for most people to pronounce. She got so annoyed she told them to just call her Iris."
A few hours later...
Jounouchi took the rejection well enough when Iris learned of his major crush on her. Fortunately the two could settle into an easy friendship over their protective nature towards Yugi.
However was one person Iris was planning to have a much sterner talking to, ever since Shadi had given her a head's up about it. Messing with shadow magic without training was bad enough... having an artifact that drew the crazy ones towards you with intent to kill was not acceptable, especially if the spirit he was stuck with kept dragging Yugi into non-magical trouble like this!
To say the spirit was surprised seeing a red haired young woman about his age in his room was an understatement. Though not as confusing as seeing his other half making it clear he was not getting involved by covering his ears and turning the other direction so he couldn't see anything.
"This is a surprise. I was unaware my aibou knew how to enter the Puzzle himself."
"Shadi is a very good teacher, even if he's washed his hands of us since you're here to take his place," said the girl.
The spirit briefly dipped into his other half's memories that he had absorbed when he first woke up. Her name was Nephthys, or "Nee-san".
"Why are you here?"
"And I am out of here, before I let any potential mental images of the chewing out start to form," said Yugi flatly. He promptly closed the door to his half of the Puzzle, which confused the spirit.
Nephthys stalked up to him with a very unhappy look on her face. She was too quick for him to avoid the hand that lashed out and pinched his ear with a great deal of force. His room darkened a bit, but for some reason didn't attack her for it.
"Do you have any idea how angry I was when I heard that Yugi has been getting into dangerous situations with people who have no issue permanently hurting or even killing him, and that he's been having black outs during the incidents?" she growled. "To say nothing the fact that you've apparently been pissing off that ego-driven idiot Kaiba and his spoiled brother!"
The spirit felt ten inches tall by the time Nephthys finished reading him the riot act. The only reason she wasn't researching ways to get rid of him permanently was that so far, he only appeared whenever Yugi was in genuine danger. The fact he had gone out of his way to insure her little brother was safe from harm was the main reason she was just giving him a chewing out.
She only stopped when a tiny black and white dragon flew up and started gnawing on his hair.
The spirit looked at the dragon he carefully dislodged because it was apparently the best thing he had to defend himself from Yugi's less than happy older sister.
It was seriously adorable, with white tipped extremities and a white belly. Almost like someone had put a black outfit on a baby dragon, but it had holes for the ears and tail and didn't close quite right on the front. It almost looked like a scaly kitten.
"Pounce, I was trying to have a serious discussion with him," said Nephthys exasperated.
What happened next startled the spirit.
"No, you were chewing him out for dragging me into danger. You're too overprotective, nee-san!" said Pounce.
The spirit looked at the dragon cub in his arms.
"Aibou?" he said confused.
The cub's face turned to look at him, it's amethyst colored eyes full of mischief.
"I'm called Pounce like this! Because I like to pounce on the lazer light nee-san brings out when I turn into my animagus form!" he chirped.
"It was either that or go with his suggestion of Shadowwing, which is too adult for that baby form," she replied. "Eventually he'll figure out the trick of turning into the adult form, but he's fine with the chibi version for now."
"Can you turn back?" asked the spirit.
"If I did that, Nee-san might start yelling at you again," said Pounce sensibly. "Better to give her a few days to cool off."
"Question...how long have you been able to enter the Puzzle on your own?" asked the spirit.
"The entire time? If I had known there was a spirit inside I would have visited sooner," said Pounce. "I just thought it had some weird spells or a curse attached to it or something, hence the black outs."
"Meditation is a requirement for the animagus transformation. Yugi was so put out when I made him go back and organize his soul room just so it wasn't so cluttered," snorted Nephthys. "On that note, you two have a lot to properly talk about. I'll give you a shake if you stay in too long."
"Thanks, Nee-san!" chirped Pounce.
Pounce turned back into being just Yugi once she left. The spirit looked speculative about the whole thing.
"I'm not sure if you can turn into Pounce as well. We could try experimenting with it later, once our connection is stronger so I'm not sleeping while you're awake," said Yugi, already guessing his thought process.
"You're taking this well."
Yugi shrugged.
"Nee-san is a witch, and it's thanks to her that we were able to contact Shadi-sensei to teach me how to use shadow magic properly...at least so I didn't cause havoc by accident. For some reason I have a higher than normal affinity for the stuff...it kept overpowering my normal spells."
The spirit seemed a tad uncomfortable as he said "I'm sorry I keep possessing you like that. I know it must be awkward waking up with no memory of what happened, and after such horrible situations too. I'd understand if you didn't want to wear the Puzzle now that you know the truth."
Yugi blinked.
"It's hardly your fault that happened. Besides, you've been stuck in this thing for over 5,000 years, and the Puzzle was in all sorts of pieces. It's understandable you were still sleepy and disjointed. Do you have a name at least?" asked Yugi.
The spirit shook his head.
"I barely even remember how to use my powers. Personal memories completely elude me...I've been mostly working off yours, which is why my control is so temporary."
"So you're still sleepy, that makes sense. And it would be rude to just call you 'the spirit' all the time," said Yugi.
"Wouldn't your sister object to the fact you're still going to wear the Puzzle?"
"She was just mad I didn't tell her the truth, and that it seems I'm stuck dealing with a larger than normal amount of crazy people. If I wasn't meant to have it, then Shadi-sensei would have taken it with him," said Yugi. "I mean seriously, I thought only she had weird luck like this."
Nee-san's luck ran from chaotic to just plain weird sometimes. Hence why Yugi was so calm about there being a spirit able to possess him...he was used to stranger things thanks to her.
Like the fact he now had a psuedo uncle who was a werewolf. Remus was a nice guy, but he was weird sometimes.
Yugi seemed to consider the Room he was in.
"Yami."
"Pardon?"
"Your name. We'll call you Yami, that why the others can just call you 'Yami Yugi' or something like that to tell the difference between us. Well besides the sudden height and the fact your hair is a tad crazier than mine," said Yugi.
The spirit...or Yami...considered this.
"I like it. It makes it easier anyway," he agreed.
Yugi felt a light shake on his shoulder.
"Nee-san said it's time for me to leave. Once the connection is strong enough, I don't mind talking."
Yami chuckled.
"I'll keep that in mind," he said, though there was a distinct sense of relief on his face.
