I've seen plenty of crossovers where the Hunger Games are put into play in another series, but none where a character FROM The Hunger Games ends up reincarnated into a world where they never existed. So I give to you Katniss-is-Fem Harry! Hope I got her personality right.
There was a predator in the brush. It was one the creatures knew well and accepted as one of their own. It only hunted to eat, and left the parts it couldn't to the other predators.
The scavengers knew and accepted her as part of the natural order of the forest.
So you could imagine the predator's annoyance when animals that most certainly didn't belong to the forest's natural order kept showing up, all with letters.
The predator, known to the two leggers as "Katniss" had read one of them and had dismissed it as a prank. She had no time to learn magic tricks, and there was nothing in the letter to explain how she was supposed to get supplies or reach this school in the first place.
Hearing two leggers approached, Katniss felt annoyance. It was bad enough having to avoid the 'well meaning adults' who insisted on trying to place her with a family or in a home because it wasn't "proper" for a girl under eleven to know how to successfully forage and hunt for food.
Considering the alternative, Katniss fell back onto old habits to fend for herself. That woman and her husband made it clear they didn't consider her family and were more than happy to dump her in the forests when she made the snarky comment of being able to find better in the woods.
Katniss went up into the trees. She found it more secure than the ground, and the adults never looked up.
She scowled at the adults, who clearly weren't used to wandering the woods. At least the ones before them had the sense to wear pants, not full length robes.
Katniss had her bow trained on them. She hadn't killed anyone...yet...but she knew better than to assume they were friendly.
She dropped down silently behind them.
"Don't move," she said calmly.
The two turned, and she got a good look at them. One smelled off, like poisons and not enough bathing. The other was a much older, distinguished woman who was more at home in a more refined setting...she also reminded Katniss of Buttercup, her sister's cat for some reason.
She still missed Prim, and wished that her sister had been reborn with her. If she had, then maybe Katniss simply hadn't found her yet.
"Ms. Potter?" asked the woman.
"It's Katniss. What do you want?" she asked calmly.
The greasy haired one gave her a strange look.
"We're here because you haven't responded to the letters," said the man.
"Hard to respond to a school that doesn't give you any real information," said Katniss evenly. "I'm fine without any of these so called magic tricks, so why don't you go back to wherever you came from."
"What do you mean by that?" said the woman affronted.
"You offer me an invitation, but the letter didn't say how to get supplies or even how to reach the school," said Katniss dismissively. "Why waste my time?"
"What do you mean you don't know how to get supplies? Petunia..." started the woman, before the man looked at her sharply.
"Wait, Petunia? Are you telling me that old fool actually put her with Petunia?" he said incredulous. "No wonder she's here...I would have abandoned that horse faced bint for the woods myself."
Katniss was starting to like the greasy one a bit more hearing that. Clearly he knew Petunia if he could make a statement like that.
"Ms. Potter, we're here to escort you to Diagon to get supplies," said the woman.
"And why should I trust you?" asked Katniss.
"Because the headmaster is an idiot if he thought placing you with Petunia of all people was a good move," said the man.
Katniss slowly lowered her bow. Something told her that the man, at least, was on her side.
In Diagon Alley
Katniss was out of her element in Diagon. She had gotten so used to be alone that entering a loud, noisy place like the alley was almost overwhelming.
The goblins took one look at her and instinctively knew her to be a blooded warrior.
She still hated the idea of being stuck in what was essentially a boarding school, but she took solace in the fact there was a large forest she could hunt in if necessary.
The older woman, McGonagall was rather openly dismayed that Katniss was so self reliant at such a young age.
Katniss just wanted to get this day over with so she could go back to the closest thing she had to a home. It wasn't much, but it was better than the house she had left.
Her hopes were dashed by McGonagall who insisted she stay at the Leaky Cauldron so she would at least make it to the train on time. Apparently her 'territory' was too far for her to make it back.
Considering they had to use what Snape called "apparition" to get to London in the first place and she knew damn well Vernon had traveled several days to get to that particular forest, she was inclined to agree.
Did not make her happy she had to be in such a noisy place. She had gotten used to the quiet.
Oh well, at least it gave her time to stock up on needed supplies. She couldn't count the number of times she forgot to buy medicines and gotten sick. She wasn't like Prim.
It was a good thing the goblins could convert her gold coins into real money, because her wardrobe needed an overhaul badly. The looks of the adults at the store annoyed her greatly. On the plus side, she was able to buy an expanded bag from the magical side which made it a lot easier to put her new purchases in without weighing her down.
She would have literally killed to have something like this with her during the Games.
Though from what she had been able to find out once she knew how to look such things up, the Hunger Games and the war that caused them to begin either didn't happen in this world, or had yet to happen. From what little she had been able to understand, it was unlikely that she was in the past as the situation in Panem (or United States of America as they were called here) was different enough that it would take something extremely drastic for them to occur.
At least the worst of the PTSD she had over the Games had vanished once she was reborn in this place, though she still had all the instincts. It was as if the majority of her personal memories had been blurred out to the point she could barely remember anything while her skills and abilities were brought back entirely.
Considering she vividly remembered having the worst night terrors in her past life, she wasn't complaining in the least.
Katniss disliked the trunk she was forced to buy. So in the spirit of keeping it as light as possible, she kept everything essential in her bag and only carried whatever she could live with losing.
She had never been fond of cats and had only kept Buttercup in memory of Prim. The less said about how much she disliked toads after that time Gale dropped one down her shirt, the better. And while she did appreciate the owls (one in particular caught her eye) she still preferred her feathered friends in the forest.
There were some nights she had to wonder if she was cursed to forever be followed by mocking-jays.
Hearing a familiar sound, Katniss smiled. Her friends had followed her after all. They sang the same bars used by the rebellion as 'her' symbol, which she whistled back.
Just having them around soothed her frazzled nerves.
It was a good thing Snape gave her detailed instructions on how to reach the train platform. She would have been stuck looking like an idiot otherwise.
Katniss picked a spot near the middle of the train, since early arrivals would likely try to fight for a spot near the front. Besides, it was right next to the prefects cabin.
Once she settled in, she opened up the windows to let her friends in, and they settled in the luggage racks nearby. She didn't want to make them fly all the way to another country to find her twice.
As the train began to fill up, she was glad that she had opted to wear headbands to cover up the scar. Snape had given her full warning that she would likely be gawked at, after she made the unpleasant discovery of the "Katniss Potter" books.
It was such a small wardrobe change, but if it meant they would leave her alone she would never take it off.
It took her a few moments to register that there were others in the compartment. One was a rather bushy haired girl with prominent teeth, the other a nervous looking boy who reminded her of Prim for some reason.
"Um...are you aware there are birds in here?" said the boy.
"They're my friends," said Katniss.
The girl looked intrigued.
"What are their names?"
"They don't have any, they just like me because I feed them and being around me means the predators leave them alone," said Katniss. She whistled lightly, and within seconds they were whistling the same tune back.
The two other kids stared.
"How did you get them to do that if they're wild?" asked the girl.
"They're mocking-jays. They always do that," said Katniss dismissively. She still had no idea why she was followed by three of them either.
"Where are my manners. My name is Hermione Granger," said the girl.
"N-N-Neville Longbottom," said the boy.
"Katniss," she said simply. She gave Neville an odd look. "Why do you smell strongly of plants?"
"I...like to garden," he said quietly.
Well that partially explained why he reminded her of Prim. She loved to garden too. Then again most of the plants in their garden had been medicinal...
"You're probably suited to be an herbalist then," said Katniss.
"Herbalist?" asked Neville confused.
"Someone who mixes herbs and plants together to make medicinal remedies?" said Katniss.
"I'm terrible at potions," said Neville. "Gran wouldn't let me near the junior set after the last one exploded."
"Well I'm terrible at gardening. And from what I was told, Potions is a mandatory class. How about we team up and split the work?" suggested Katniss.
Neville perked up at that. However Hermione was staring at her agape.
"Katniss as in Katniss Potter?"
Katniss made a face. She could already guess what Hermione was thinking.
"For the record, that entire line of books is full of nonsense. I spent the past six years living on my own in the woods and two of the professors had to come and find me just so I could attend. You have no idea how annoying it is to dodge child protective services because they have an issue with someone quite literally living in a tree house with no adult supervision," said Katniss.
"...Seriously?" said Hermione.
"You can ask McGonagall if you don't believe me."
"Why were you living in the woods?" asked Neville.
"Let's just say some families you're better off without," said Katniss.
Petunia certainly didn't complain when they dumped her in the woods with a bow and quiver of arrows. That was the only thing Katniss had demanded they give her, and if meant being rid of the 'freak', they had complied happily.
She hadn't lost a wink of sleep over it since.
Katniss was glad she had been sorted into Ravenclaw, rather than Gryffindor. The older ones reminded her of the 'career' jerks from District One for the games. They had been really angry at her for having dismantling the system and forcing them to find new work.
There had been a second attempt at a revolt over it, but by that point the people were sick and tired of the pointless massacre so they had been shut down with extreme prejudice. She, thankfully, never had to get involved with that particular mess.
Snape didn't know what to make of Katniss Potter. She was nothing like her despicable father, and she had all of Lily's intelligence but lacked her personable nature. The girl was entirely too closed off for an eleven year old.
He knew he wasn't the only one concerned. Katniss was highly antisocial, but she wasn't a total bookworm like a typical Ravenclaw either. It bothered him that the girl had a distinctly 'survivalist' personality that refused to let anyone in.
The only real bright spot was that she did seem partial to the Longbottom heir, for whatever reason. She acted somewhat protective of the boy, and displayed a great deal of patience with him.
However contrary to their first meeting, Katniss did not instantly bond with Hermione. The girl still clung to her naive belief in the rules of society, and that adults were to be obeyed whenever possible.
Snape sighed. Somehow, he had the distinct feeling that things were going to become headache inducing very shortly. And he knew for a fact Dumbledore didn't like that Katniss was so closed off from her peers.
Odds were he would have to make special arrangements for the girl, because he suspected the headmaster would attempt to force her to return to her so called 'family'. Something that would only end badly if Petunia was as bad as he remembered from childhood.
