Chapter Forty
It has been a few days since Danielle and Luz were able to contact their parents. The girls decided to record their day recently in a way to let their parents know it's not so bad in the Demon Realm and such. The annual Coven Day's Parade was around the corner. Willow and Gus were concerned for Danielle and Luz as they sat on the steps of Hexside.
"Luz, Danielle," said Gus, looking at Danielle. "You two seen Belos up close. What's he like under... all that?"
"There's like some green rot on his face," said Luz, staring at her cell phone.
"Probably the palisman souls fighting back against him," said Danielle, looking at everyone. "If they can fight back, then so can we."
"Those poor palisman," said Amity, walking over and sitting next to Luz.
"Amity!" said Luz, sighing.
"Lumity," thought Danielle, silently chuckling.
"Hola, batata," said Amity, helping Luz up.
"Did you just call me a sweet potato?" asked Luz, looking at Amity.
"Yes! Is that not a term of endearment?" asked Amity, holding up a cookbook. "I'm still figuring out this human language book from Gus."
"That's actually a cookbook," said Danielle, looking at the cookbook. "But it is a good start to learning the Spanish language. Good job, Gus."
"You can still call me that," said Luz, leaning on Amity. "You're the sweet potato!"
"Uh, so..." said Amity, looking at Luz. "Did that Titan Blood ever come in handy?"
"Did you finish building the door?" asked Willow, looking at Danielle and Luz.
"Did you visit your mom and dad?" asked Gus, looking at Danielle and Luz. "Does they know about high fives too?"
"Yes, to all those questions," replied Danielle, looking at everyone. "They want us back after we finish the Portal Door."
"What?" said everyone, looking at Danielle and Luz. "Why?"
"They're only thinking of our safety," said Danielle, looking at everyone. "I can't blame them. I'd do the same thing."
"Later, taters!" said Luz, kissing Amity on the cheek.
"Luz, wait up," said Danielle, walking after Luz. "Something's wrong. Did some of your memories from that day come back?"
"Yeah," replied Luz, looking at the ground. "Mom didn't like that I chose to stay. Thought that I hated living with her and wanting to live some witch fantasy. Made me promise to stay there."
"Oh Luz," said Danielle, pulling Luz into a side hug before seeing Eda and mounting her staff.
"Don't worry you two. When they meet us, I'll make sure to put on the charm..." said Eda, flying towards Bonesborough. "That turns people into obedient zombies."
"Sorry but I don't think you'll beat mom in that regard toward my dad," said Danielle, looking at Eda.
"Woah, what's going on?" asked Luz, as they landed in Bonesborough.
"They're probably prepping for the annual Coven Day Parade," said King, looking around. "Floats, streamers, fireworks…"
"Ah, it's just a fancy way to kiss the Emperor's..." said Eda, only to see Danielle and Luz cover King's ears. "Whatever. I'm just here to pick something up."
"Kikimora," said Danielle, as she and Luz saw her talking on a crow phone in an alley.
"Hey, Luz! I know what'll cheer you up," said King, as they followed Eda to a stand.
"Aw, no bread puns today, buddy," said Luz, sighing.
"What? No. I'm talkin' about hot goss, girl!" said King, jumping on top of the stand. "Hot goss buns. Bread pun. Guess why we're here!"
"King!" said Eda, irritated as she holds a file.
"Eda hired someone to spy on her ex!" said King, wagging his tail.
"Did you read my diary?!" asked Eda, gasping in embarrassment.
"Oh, you're talking about Raine," said Danielle, looking at the file. "Yeah, I think we just broke Luz."
"It was the... yeast I could do," said King, laughing.
"And then Raine battled their fellow coven heads? And sacrificed everything to save Eda?" said Luz, before crying. "It's just like Hecate and Azura in book 5!"
"Must be a cover story so as to not give away their cover," said Danielle, looking at the file. "Likes spicy food? Wonder how much heat they can handle."
"Look!" said Luz, seeing a billboard with Raine on it.
"If they're here for the parade, they'll probably be surrounded by scouts," said Eda, looking at the billboard. "Oh, we'd need someone on the inside to lend us a hand."
"Hmm," said Luz, looking at Kikimora than Eda. "Hmm?"
"Yeah, right," said Eda, snorting. "As if she'd give us the time of day."
"I feel like it would be wrong to ask her," said Danielle, looking at Luz. "Wrong with a capital w."
"Something happen on your run?" asked Eda, looking at Danielle.
"Most likely both our runs. I was able to watch the show remember," replied Danielle, before seeing Luz walk over with Kikimora. "Luz! Fine… vent away."
"And-and then she said if I don't make it back for the family reunion, I'd be banished from Palm Stings and the family home!" said Kikimora, sobbing. "But I've failed too many missions, and if I leave my job now, I'll be banished from my life!"
"Eeeyikeseeola," said Danielle, listening to Kikimora.
"There you go. It's gonna be okay. Maybe there's a way we can help each other out…" said Luz, as Eda grabbed her by her hood. "Whoa!"
"Are you out of your mind? Kikimora nearly turned me to stone. She attacked you two back in Latissa. Oh, she is bad, and not the hot kinda bad," said Eda, looking at Luz. "Plus, Danielle is getting a bad feeling about this."
"But this could be your way to talk to Raine!" said Luz, looking at Eda. "Isn't it worth the risk?"
"Not everything is worth the risk," said Danielle, looking at Luz. "If I had the choice to save Malty from the Pope in that anime, I'd let her be incinerated."
"Yikes," said Luz, backing away slightly from Danielle. "I'm afraid to ask."
"Maybe," replied Eda, looking at Luz. "But what're you getting out of this?"
"I'm... just a sucker for romantic reunions?" replied Luz, looking at Eda.
"This is true..." said Eda, sighing. "Ugh, fine!"
"Fine? What's fine?" asked Kikimora, glaring at the girls and Eda. "What are you cretins planning?"
"Worry not, Kikimora. We're gonna help you..." said Luz, looking at Kikimora. "By kidnapping you and Raine!"
"Two ways we can do this. One: I can take your place under an illusion while you visit your family in Palm Stings," said Danielle, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Two, we could project the parade and Kikimora in Palm Stings. Not only would her family get to see her but she wouldn't have to leave and they'd get a parade as well."
"Uuh, Danielle… Terra is gonna be there to watch over Kikimora."
"Shit! Terra is gonna be there," said Danielle, before remembering King was there. "I mean…"
"Oh, I heard," said King, grinning mischievously at Danielle.
"Dangit," said Danielle, sighing.
"Ah, right, you're under the oracle track at Hexside," said Kikimora, eyeing Danielle. "Your little spirit friend say anything?"
"You can say betrayal on both fronts… yeah, prepare to be under the weather… again."
"So, help me, if you betray us after we try to help you," said Danielle, glaring at Kikimora with glowing eyes. "Petrification by Belos will feel like a sweet dream to what I have in store for you."
"Meep," said Kikimora, fearful of her life.
Pulling Danielle away, Eda and Luz prepare for their planned heist. Dirtied cloths were cleaned. King was carrying a bunch of fireworks that he got from Edric. Setting off a Wood Glyph, Danielle was able to craft a decent bust before Luz started climbing and draping the cloths over it. Sewing it in properly and studying their work, Danielle and Luz fist bump before King puts a muffin in each of their mouths.
"Nice work, everyone," said Luz, before gesturing to the plans. "Let's go over the plan one more time. King and Hooty will pilot the float during the parade. Once it gets to the halfway point, you two will set off all the glyphs, potions, and fireworks to distract people."
"With my love of mayhem and Hooty's desperate need for attention, this'll be a cake walk!" said King, looking at Luz.
"When Kikimora sends off the guards to investigate, that's when Eda and I will obscure the stage and whisk her and Raine away. Then Danielle will go under an illusion and disguise herself as Kikimora," said Luz, her tone becomes slightly frantic. "The Coven can't banish Kiki if she's missing! She'll get the best of both worlds! She'll set an example for us all!"
"Luz," said Danielle, concerned for Luz.
"Um, I mean… Eda gets to talk to Raine," said Luz, nervously chuckling. "It's romantic!"
"Oh, it's not that romantic," said Eda, blushing.
"Witch, this is peak of Mount Romance," said Hooty, looking at Eda.
"It will work this time," said Danielle, as wisps of her magic flow around her.
"Uuh, Danielle…" said Luz, backing away from Danielle.
"Strap yourselves in," said Eda, looking at Luz, Hooty and King. "This is going to be a long night."
Pushing their float towards the parade grounds, they stop before Hooty and King take over. Following Eda, the girls hop across the rooftops, waiting till Hooty and King gave the signal.
"That was the signal!" said Luz, recognizing the signal.
"Let's move," said Eda, jumping down the roof.
"Okay," said Luz, trying to get down and failing. "Uh... I can't get down. Whoa, Danielle, wait."
"Here we go," said Danielle, picking Luz up and jumping down the roof as Luz clung to her.
"Four! Three! Two…" said Hooty and King, looking at their watch before setting off fireworks.
"Should we, uh, do something about that?" asked a Coven Scout, looking at Kikimora.
"Yes, of course, you hangnails!" said Kikimora, ordering the Coven Scouts. "I command all of you to investigate!"
"And scoop!" said Luz, picking up Kikimora. "Danielle, your turn."
"On it," said Danielle, setting up her illusion and sitting on the parade float.
"Ooh! I cannot believe we are being taken against our will," said Kikimora, playing along. "What sayeth you, fiend?"
"Uh! That's right! I, Hecate, will whisk you away to my kingdom of mirrors and snakes!" said Luz, before Danielle slapped the back of her head. "Hey, come on. I didn't know I had to prepare lines."
"Just go," said Danielle, as Luz ran away.
"What the…" said a Coven Scout, looking towards the float. "Kikimora, I thought you were…"
"Does it look I was captured, you hangnail," said Danielle, looking at the Coven Scout. "If you're done investigating, then get back to your positions."
"Yes ma'am," said the Coven Scout, getting back into position.
The parade continued like it was never bothered with. Danielle steered the float as is, before shuddering when someone looked her way. A smoke bomb is thrown her way. Getting sleepy, the illusion is dropped before someone grabs Danielle as she finally passes out. Minutes later, Danielle is awakened with some pungent peppers. Looking around, Danielle notices she's bound to some examination bed, naked as the day she was born, with markers indicating certain areas of her body.
"What the…" said Danielle, before spotting the someone who knocked her out. "Hettie Cutburn, Head of the Healing Coven."
"So glad to know you're well informed," said Hettie Cutburn, with a scalpel in her hand. "I always wondered what the product between a witch and human would be. Thanks for being born for this examination."
"Examination?!" said Danielle, scared as she struggled to get free. "Hell no! Let me go!"
"Come now. This will help future half breeds like you," said Hettie Cutburn, walking over and gliding the non-sharp end of the scalpel over Danielle's belly, making her whimper. "Hmmm, a faint scar. Appendix was taken out."
"Stop… stop," said Danielle, as Hettie glided the scalpel over her body.
Whimpering as Hettie examined her, Danielle's magic was responding to her situation. Nick here, nick there, touch here, touch there, Hettie didn't care as she wrote down everything she could as she examined Danielle. Tears were flowing down Danielle's cheeks as she started to hyperventilate. Having enough, Danielle screams as her magic blasts everything away from her before floating in front of Hettie, eyes glowing. Danielle's magic goes wild destroying everything around her. Even leaving a long scar over Hettie's eyes and hands. Blasting a hole in the roof, Danielle flies out of the building and landing far enough away. Staggering and still hyperventilating a bit, Danielle clings to the walls of the buildings as she tries to navigate back to Eda, yet staying hidden in the alleys.
"Hmmm… oh my Ti…" said Yellow Fang, spotting Danielle before yelling towards Viney. "Viney! Get Puddles!"
"Sta-sta-stay away from me-me," said Danielle, as Yellow Fang tried to approach. "Stay back… I said stay-stay ba-back."
"Okay, okay… Viney!" shouted Yellow Fang, as Viney runs over.
"What is it… oh my Titan," said Viney, noticing Danielle. "Danielle! Wha-what happened… Yellow Fang!"
"It wasn't me, I swear," said Yellow Fang, putting his hands up in defense. "I found her like this. I may not like her and that other human but I wouldn't go this far."
"Danielle, it's okay," said Viney, bending down and extending her hand as Puddles gave a warble. "I'm here to help. Please, trust me."
"… …" said Danielle, just staring at Viney as Puddles slowly inched closer, her hand flinching every so often as she tried to pet Puddles before their wings slowly wrapped around her. "… …"
"Danielle, please, I need to know who did this to you," said Viney, looking at Danielle, concerned. "Who did this? Who…"
"Cut… burn… it-it wa-was He-Head Wi-Witch Cut-Cutburn," replied Danielle, curling in on the softness of Puddles wings.
"Head Witch Cutburn!?" said Viney, shocked.
"Viney, Clawthorne and the other human plus Amity is coming this way," said Yellow Fang, before waving them down. "Over here."
"Danielle!" said Luz and Amity, only for Danielle to back away into the confines of Puddles wings. "Oh my… what happened?"
"Hey, it's okay, it's okay," said Eda, shifting into harpy mode and slowly encasing Danielle into her wings.
"Viney, did Danielle say anything?" asked Luz, looking at Viney.
"Head Witch Cutburn did this," replied Viney, looking at Luz and Eda before Yellow Fang came back with a white flat sheet with a pink heart design.
"Cutburn!? She'll regret this!" said Eda, making Danielle cringe into her wings. "Shhh, shhh, everything will be okay."
"Here, Danielle," said Luz, helping Eda wrap the flat sheet around Danielle. "Thanks, Viney for helping Danielle… and I guess you too Yellow Fang."
"You're welcome, I guess," said Yellow Fang, sheepishly rubbing the back of his head.
"Eda!" shouted King and Hooty, coming around the corner before gasping. "What happ…"
"Not now. Everyone overcrowding is not helping Danielle," said Eda, looking at everyone.
"Okay," said Hooty, staying around King.
"Belos is about to make an announcement," said King, pointing towards the stage in the distance.
"Thank you, everyone," said Emperor Belos, massively projecting himself on stage. "Together we are perfecting the Coven System as the Titan intended. The Day of Unity will be in exactly one month, when the tide is at its lowest and the moon obscures the sun. At that time, we will journey to the head of the Isles, and there, the worthy shall inherit a utopia free of wild magic."
"The Draining Spell," said Eda, glaring at Emperor Belos.
"I already know what you're talking about," said Viney, looking at Eda. "My memories are up to date. I know what is to happen."
"Huh… Viney, what are you talking about?" asked Yellow Fang, looking at his sister.
"Later Yellow Fang," said Viney, staring at her brother. "Later."
Picking Danielle up bridal style, Eda lends Luz, Amity, Hooty and King her staff. Owlbert warbles concerned when seeing Danielle. Taking flight, Luz was able to explain that Kikimora betrayed her at the end. Seeing the Owl House, Eda flies in as Luz and Amity head to get medical supplies inside the house. King was regulated to being comfort and letting Danielle pet him as everyone else tended to Danielle. Calling it a night, everyone heads to bed, with Amity staying the night for some added support.

Rising of the Shield Hero- when Danielle mentions Malty and the Pope, she's referencing the battle against the Pope and the heroes

"I wonder what they're fighting over now," said Eda, hearing the girls running all over the second floor.
"Delete it," said Danielle, running after Luz into the living room. "Delete it now before you accidently but dial it to our friends."
"What is this about?" asked Eda, before Luz showed a recording. "Oh, that."
The recording was of when Danielle was regressed. Luz had put her in some animal jammies resembling a red fox. Cute thing was Danielle's magic was able to get the tail wagging and ears flicking.
"Who's a cute little fox? Who's a cute little fox?" said Luz, in the recording. "What does the fox say?"
"Kon kon," said Danielle, giggling while being cute.
"Ah, yes," said Eda, smiling. "That was an interesting day."

"Screw the coven system! Screw Belos!" shouted Yellow Fang, as Viney had told him almost everything. "I'd sooner be a wild witch than give up my independence."
"Maybe now he'll be more cooperative," thought Viney, as she watched her brother rage on.

"Here," said Jacob, holding a photo album and showing Camila some photos of when Danielle was young. "Isn't she adorable?"
"Oooo, she's a little cat chef," said Camila, cooing at the image of a young Danielle wearing large paw shaped oven mitts and cat ears. "Here's Luz posing in her dolphin shirt. Manny got her good angle that day. Oh, and this one…"
Back in the Demon Realm in the Owl House
"Did you just get a chill down your spine?" asked Luz, shuddering a bit while looking at Danielle.
"I have a feeling dad is showing pictures of when I was young or a baby," said Danielle, shuddering as well. "Vice versa with your mom."
"Aaw, mom!" said Luz, slumping to the floor. "Please, noooo!"

"Don't they ever get tired of fighting?" asked Eda, hearing the girls running all over the second floor.
"Luz, get back here!" shouted Danielle, running after Luz into the living room. "You better delete that dang photo."
"Which cute photo are we talking about now?" asked Eda, as Luz showed the photo of Danielle and Aster reading a book together with the added filtered words of Astelle on it. "I think you went a little too far with that one."
"I said I would find a cute couple name for Danielle and this fits," said Luz, before waving her hand about. "Besides, didn't your mom say that Aster will be in his teens by the time you start to age normally again. You two are the perfect royal couple."
"Luz!" shouted Danielle, blushing up a storm.
"Uuh, Eda…" said Luz, seeing Eda leave the living room. "Where you going?"
"Away from the ensuing storm," said Eda, looking at Luz. "Can't help you with this one. Byeeeee!"
"… … …" said Luz, paling before looking at Danielle. "Can we… wha-aah!"
