Chapter 11: A Protector; Yasuko Yukihana vs Kalin Kessler Part 2

Riley stood at the sidelines, watching two duel runners racing against each other with monsters flying beside them. He can see the duel runners are coming close to the finish line and makes one fast pass.

He turned his head at the same time Yasuko and Kalin zip past him like a bullet. It wasn't hard to find them since monsters were floating around them. As he was watching, two people then showed up beside him. Marlene and Casey arrived soon after the duel started.

"So, Kalin's dueling that Yasuko girl in here?" Casey asked. "Not very fond of this place." She crossed her arms with disapproval, watching the duel like she hated it. "Still, this is Kalin we're talking about." She then noticed that Riley didn't speak back to her. "What? Shy, aren't you?" Casey inquired, inclining her head curiously. Riley wasn't sure what to say and turned back to the duel.

"Not talking, aren't ya, little one?" Casey smiles and pats Riley's head. "I like ya, kid. Not much talking. Just watching." She turns to the duel that is still going on in progress.

So far, Yasuko has Kuibelt the Blade Dragon (ATK 2500/DEF 1900). Conversely, Kalin only has Void Ogre Dragon (ATK 3000/DEF 3000) in Defense Position.

Both players have only one monster, but Kalin's monster is stronger in attack and defense power, giving him a slight advantage over Yasuko and her monster. It was already the End Phase, and Yasuko had nothing left to play other than ending her turn.

Turn 3: Kalin (0x card)

Casey notices that Kalin is smiling, and it's not a good sign for her. "Oh no," she said. "Kalin's doing it again, grandma."

Marlene also notices Kalin's wicked smile, making her just as nervous as her granddaughter. "I thought Kalin promised to never take it too far again," she prayed. "Darling, why does Kalin have to be so violent when this happens?"

"I don't know," said Casey. "Kalin's never been like this for a while. I just wonder why he does this."

Kalin passes around the corner with his ogre dragon, followed by Yasuko and her kuibelt dragon. "My turn!" Kalin declared, drawing a card from his deck. "And I activate the Continuous Spell, Infernity Launcher!" Kalin activates the Continuous Spell Card: Infernity Launcher. "With this card on my field, I can send this to the graveyard to Special Summon two Infernity monsters," he explained. Kalin demonstrates this by sending the face-up continuous spell into the graveyard and bursting it into bricks. With his spell gone, Kalin Special Summons Infernity Wildcat and Infernity Doom Archfiend from his graveyard in Defense Position. "I Special Summon Infernity Wildcat and Doom Archfiend from my graveyard!" With that, Kalin summons the demonic cat and the doom archfiend as they emerge from two portals beside him.

Yasuko narrows her eyes at the two monsters Kalin summoned, thinking about what he will do next. "This can't be good," she said, primarily to herself.

"Now, I activate Wildcat's special effect! By banishing one "Infernity" monster in my graveyard, I can increase or decrease this monster's level by 1!" Kalin declared. "I'm going to banish my Infernity Necromancer and reduce Wildcat's level!" Kalin banishes his Infernity Necromancer to make the demonic cat lose one level.

(Infernity Wildcat: Level 3 2)

"Now, I activate Doom Archfiend! I can target one face-up card on the field, negate its effects, and if I have no cards in my hand, I can destroy it!" He points at the kuibelt dragon flying right behind Yasuko. "I'm going to target that Kuibelt dragon to negate and destroy it!" The doom archfiend brings up its two long arms and then charges up red energy to destroy the kuibelt dragon.

Yasuko has to think fast; otherwise, her kuibelt dragon will be destroyed. She spots something up ahead. It was an Action Card in a bubble on the road. She twists her stick, putting the duel runner into full throttle. She can feel the windspeed blowing her face under her visor. She focuses on the Action Card. It's a perilous move, but she will take it. Yasuko carefully leans to her right and extends her hand. She has to focus on her handling so she doesn't fall under the intense speed. The Action Card was coming close.

As she got closer, Kalin suddenly hit the brakes, halting his duel runner to where Yasuko was about to crash into him.

"What the hell?!" Yasuko gasped, turning to her left. Both duel runners and their monsters nearly brushed against each other, but Yasuko managed to get back on track. "What the hell was that for, you shit-ass!" she cursed. "Are you trying to get me killed?!" Yasuko was infuriated that Kalin would do something so reckless that she would get into a deadly crash with her duel runner.

"I can see you were trying to get one of those Action Cards you mentioned," Kalin crackled. "But I won't let you!" He gestures to his doom archfiend to finish his effect. "Now, Doom Archfiend! Destroy Kuibelt!" The doom archfiend was done charging its power.

Yasuko grits her teeth, angered that Kalin is being so wild. She turns to the front and spots another Action Card coming her way. "Screw it!" She was hesitant and careful with getting the Action Cards, but not anymore. She leans to her right, and Yasuko swipes the Action Card: Mirror Barrier into her palm in the blink of an eye.

"I activate the Action Spell, Mirror Barrier!" Yasuko declared. "By targeting one monster on the field, that monster cannot be destroyed by card effects this turn!"

Just when Yasuko thinks she has protected her monster, Kalin has a counter against the Action Card. "Like hell, I would let you do that!" he yelled. "Did you forget? When you activate a Spell/Trap card, and since I have no cards in my hand, I can activate Void Ogre Dragon's effect to negate and destroy it!" The ogre dragon's jewel orbs on its body glow red, and the dragon unleashes a barrage of lasers. The lasers impact everything around Yasuko, negating the activation of the Action Card and destroying it.

"Damn it!" Yasuko cursed.

"Now that your little Action Card is done, my Doom Archfiend can destroy that kuibelt out of the way!" Kalin boosted. The doom archfiend fires a red laser over to the kuibelt dragon, destroying the monster with a huge explosion. The shockwaves shook Yasuko's duel runner like a violent storm, making her nearly lose her grip.

"Now we end this," Kalin declared.

"Not a chance!" Yasuko suddenly exclaimed. "When the Synchro Summoned Kuibelt is destroyed by battle or card effect, its effect activates! I can target one monster on the field, and until the end of the turn, that monster cannot attack!" She gestures to the strongest monster on the field: the ogre dragon. "I target your Void Ogre Dragon!" Upon her declaration, a mirage of the kuibelt dragon appears above Yasuko. It flaps its sword wings, hitting the ogre dragon with swords and blades, effectively making it unable to attack.

"No way," Kalin uttered. Turning back to the front, Kalin ground his teeth in anger. "Damn it, just when you are about to be dead."

"No, you're just being psychotic!" Yasuko accused. "I'm dueling to keep Riley away from Security, and you're going to kill me for doing that." She pivots her duel runner to the left turn, and Kalin follows right behind. "What's your beef anyway?"

"My beef? I have no beef," Kalin claimed. "I'm keeping my friend and her grandmother safe from everything downtown. And that's just what I'm going to do."

Yasuko has a gut feeling that Kalin is hiding something else. He's not just doing the duel to protect the old lady and her granddaughter. For some reason, Kalin's aggressiveness differs from his usually calm personality back at the house. She wonders if Kalin had some troubled past. She will have to find out more as she duels with him longer.

"I tune my level 2 Wildcat with my level 6 Doom Archfiend!" Kalin raises his hand, turning the wildcat into three green rings. The rings scan the doom archfiend, removing the solid masses, and six white orbs align themselves at the center.

(2 + 6 = 8)

"Dragon of infinite power, rise up and bring doom upon those who deny your place! I Synchro Summon! Level 8! Infernity Doom Dragon!" Kalin tunes the demonic wildcat with doom archfiend to Synchro Summon Infernity Doom Dragon (ATK 3000/DEF 2400) in Attack Position. Once the white light bursts from the rings, a dark dragon with four eyes and a horn on its nose roars on the field with its two pincer claws and two smaller arms raised outwards.

Yasuko found this dragon gross since its brain was exposed to the head. She'd rather deal with the ogre dragon than doom dragon. "Great, another powerhouse monster," she commented.

"Let's battle!" Kalin declared. "Doom Dragon, attack directly!" The doom dragon brings up its face and opens its jaw wide open. Yasuko glances over, her eyes widening when she sees the doom dragon firing a blue flame out of its jaw. The flames hit her from behind. She can literally feel the blue flames' heat around her as her life points take a heavy toll.

(Yasuko: LP 4000 1000)

Riley gasped, holding his teddy bear tightly, when he saw Yasuko getting consumed by the blue flames. Just when he thought Yasuko was a goner, the girl emerged from the smoke and debris, and her duel runner was still driving.

"Well, would you look at that? That girl's hanging on so well. Can't imagine how Kalin must've felt," said Casey, looking closely at the turbo duel. "Looks like they're going to be dueling to the death." She ends up getting a smack with a walking stick from Marlene.

"Ow! Hey, what?" Casey grunted.

"Do not speak like that, young one," Marlene scolded. "This isn't a duel to see whether they can stay. This is about trying to confront their responsibilities." She placed her walking stick in front of her and watched the duel.

Riley and Casey were looking at the old lady, exchanging perplexing glances. "Uh, what responsibility?" Casey inquired.

"They both carry the same responsibility, but they're going to be testing how they take that responsibility," said Marlene. "They have to be protectors." Her response made the girl raise an eyebrow before Casey returned to the duel.

Both duel runners are neck and neck, but Yasuko has no more monsters on the field. "I end my turn," Kalin concluded. "So, you've got no monsters to defend yourself. That last move you made to cancel my ogre's attack was worth the shot, but that doesn't mean it will do any good."

Yasuko glances over her shoulder. "Don't underestimate your opponent, Kalin Kessler," she called.

Turn 4: Yasuko (2x cards)

"My turn!" Yasuko draws a card from her deck. She checks what the card is, and much to her disappointment, it's the monster card: Kuribandit (ATK 300/DEF 200). "Damn it, not what I was hoping for," she thought. Yasuko looked down at the two cards that were in her hand. "Yet, this could work to my advantage. So long as Kalin has no cards in his hand, he can activate all his monster effects, but…" She has no idea how to lock Kalin out as she Normal Summons the monster she drew. "I Summon Kuribandit!" Once Yasuko summons a monster, a small furry bandit with a glass eyepatch and a yellow bandana appears beside Yasuko.

Kalin laughed hysterically when he saw the furry bandit on her field. "Are you friggin' kidding me? That's got to be the most pathetic monster I've ever seen!" he mocked. "What? Got any more tricks up your sleeve?"

Yasuko looks at the two cards that are in her hand. She decides to take all of them and Set the cards face-down. "I Set two cards and end my turn," she said. "And during the End Phase, Kuribandit's special effect activates! If this card was Normal Summoned this turn, I can tribute this monster to excavate the top five cards from my deck, and if any of them are a Spell or Trap: I can add one to my hand and send the rest of the cards to the graveyard!" She gestures to the furry bandit on her field. "I tribute my Kuribandit to excavate five cards!" The furry bandit makes a small "Kuri" noise before it bursts into particles. Yasuko excavates the top five cards from her deck, showing her that she has Clear Kuriboh, Servant of Endymion, Mythical Beast Garuda, Amazing Pendulum, and Concentrating Current. "I add Amazing Pendulum to my hand!" Once she has added Amazing Pendulum, Yasuko sends the rest to the graveyard.

"Pfft! Ha!" Kalin laughed. "That's all? I expected more from you!"

Turn 5: Kalin (0x cards)

Kalin draws one card from his deck. "My turn!" he said. "And since I draw Infernity Archfiend, I can reveal this card and Special Summon it to my field!" As per the effect of the archfiend, Kalin reveals his Infernity Archfiend (ATK 1800/DEF 0) and Special Summon it in Attack Position. The monster Kalin summoned is just a carbon copy of the doom archfiend, but it lacks the red coloring in the form.

"When Infernity Archfiend is Summoned, I can activate its effect to add one "Infernity" card from my deck to my hand," said Kalin. "And I think I'm going to add myself this trap card! Infernity Suppression." Using the effect of his archfiend, Kalin adds the Trap Card: Infernity Suppression to his hand. "With this, now my victory is in hand," he thought. "You should've turned yourself in when you had the chance."

"Like hell, I'm going to do that," said Yasuko. "Riley's a kid, but that doesn't mean I'm the only one who has to take care of him."

Kalin scoffed. "Like you could ever protect that kid. He means nothing to you," he said.

That last sentence made Yasuko boil red like nothing before. She's never felt so much anger in her life. Not because of what Kalin said but because of what he assumed Riley was to her. "What?" Yasuko growled. "You think I can't protect Riley by myself?"

"It's the truth," Kalin responded. "I have you right where I want you. Your two Set cards aren't going to do much. You should know by now. No one can protect that kid. Not even you." Kalin was making spite out of the girl, but Yasuko wouldn't let him get into her head. She must know what is Kalin's big deal.

"Like you have something to protect," said Yasuko. "That old lady and her granddaughter? What do you owe them?" she questioned Kalin's reasoning for staying at Marlene's place. "You know those two. You're living with them because you owe them a favor."

"I don't owe them anything," Kalin denied.

"Then why?" Yasuko insisted. "Did Something happen to you when you were still a criminal? Or was it because of something you did?"

Kalin did not speak at once. He was deep in his thoughts. Like he had something in his mind. Yasuko can't figure out what it was that made Kalin so ticked. There was something Kalin had done to make him so bitter and psychotic at the same time.

"Like you ever protected anyone before," said Kalin. "I was born in the Commons. I fought to survive this world. I live by scraps. Day in and day out. I wanted nothing more than to protect the ones I love. And in the end, nothing could be saved from the truth. I had everything, a home, a family, friends, everything I could ever want. And yet, gangs are still everywhere in the Commons. I decided to protect my home and started a gang of my own. It was all just so I could protect my people, but then…

"I got carried away with it. I started picking fights with other gangs, and my gang started picking fights with other gangs, and then things got out of hand. I got arrested, sent to the Facility, and then was released. I was getting sick of the gang wars being fought in the Commons. It was every man, woman, and child for themselves. I was done protecting, so I left. Left out of town for a while and then came here. Casey and her grandmother were being evicted, so I came in and take care of their home."

As Kalin explained, Yasuko understands him more. He got a bit psychotic not intentionally, but he wanted to protect them from the gangs who would threaten the people he considers to be his family. "Must've been hard," said Yasuko.

"You have no idea how hard," Kalin answered somberly. "And because we are Commons, whole Sector Security ended up cracking down on us. That old lady and Casey didn't mean anything harm; they just want to live peacefully."

Yasuko could relate to what Kalin was saying. She also wanted to live her life in peace and not deal with this Dimension War. She wanted to be back home, but Yasuko knew it couldn't go on as long as the ones in charge of Academia started the war.

"To tell you the truth, I never wanted to come here," Yasuko admitted. "I never wanted to come to this city and be a part of this system, but I am here and going to do whatever it takes to protect that kid with me." Seeing how the system works in the city makes Yasuko want to keep Riley as close to her as possible until she can secure a haven for him. "And until I get him back to his brother, I swore to keep him safe, even if it means I must break the laws here in this city."

Kalin briefly glances at the girl over his shoulder, intrigued by her determination despite the odds being against her with no monsters on the field. "Alright then," he said. "Show me that you can protect yourself when I attack directly!" Kalin raised his hand, twisting his duel runner to the side with such expertise. "Battle!" he declared. "I attack directly with Doom Dragon!" Upon command, the doom dragon urns around to prepare for a direct attack.

Casey is sure Kalin will win the duel since Yasuko has nothing left to defend herself. "And because Yasuko's at 1000 LP, it's going to get a hit!" she pointed out.

Riley looked up to Casey before reverting to stare at Yasuko with worry.

"Don't be so sure, Casey," Marlene argued. "Take a look at that girl closely. She's still going strong." Casey was confused, unsure of what her grandmother was trying to tell her. She turns back to the duel, and Marlene is right. Yasuko is still confident of her duel. '

She keeps her eyes on the road and the screen where her opponent has his field set. Yasuko can guess what's coming next and starts acting against his attacks. "I activate Clear Kuriboh's special effect from the graveyard!" she declared. "When you declare an attack, I can banish this card to draw one card from my deck, and if it's a monster, I can Special Summon it and change your monster's attack target to it!" Yasuko purposely banishes her Clear Kuriboh to activate its effect; however, Kalin anticipated a counter from the girl.

"Not on my watch!" Kalin retorted. "I activate the Trap! Infernity Suppression!" He flips up the trap card he Set earlier. "With Infernity Suppression, if you activate a monster effect while I have no cards in my hand, I can negate that effect and deal damage to your life points equal to its level x 100!" The trap card flips up and shoots a lightning bolt to zap Yasuko and her duel runner.

(Yasuko: LP 1000 900)

"Ha! I take away your defense. Now you're going to be destroyed!" Kalin mocked.

"No, you fell right into my trap!" Yasuko vowed. "I activate my Quick-Play Spell, Metaltronus!" Yasuko activates the Quick-Play Spell Card: Metaltronus. The spell flips on the field, and a green bolt zaps out, hitting the ogre dragon. "With this spell, I can target one monster on your field that has 2 or more of the same Type, Attribute, or ATK and Special Summon one monster from my Deck or Extra Deck with those requirements!"

"Are you that stupid?" Kalin taunted. "I can negate it with my Void Ogre Dragon's effect as long as I have no cards in my hand!" The ogre dragon's jewels are glowing to negate the spell's effect. Yet, Yasuko isn't worried. She was expecting something like that to happen.

"I'm afraid you won't be doing that again!" Yasuko exclaimed. "When Metaltronus targets your monster, you cannot activate its effects in response to this card's activation!"

Kalin was shocked that Yasuko had something to block his negation. "What?!" he gasped. Once Yasuko activates the spell, the glowing jewel on the dragon simmers and dies, effectively negating the monster's effect. "No way! You blocked my monster?" He glances over to Yasuko, who is now catching up with him.

"And since your Void Ogre Dragon is a DARK and a Dragon-Type! I have a monster that I can summon!" Yasuko throws her hand over to her right as Yasuko uses the spell's effect to Special Summon Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon (ATK 2500/DEF 2000) in Defense Position. "Rise, dragon of heterochromatic eyes! Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon!"

A portal opens beside Yasuko's duel runner, allowing her to summon Odd-Eyes Phantom, a dragon with bone armor over its blue skin and red and green eyes. The dragon roars with life as it is summoned to her field.

Despite Kalin's surprise, the dragon doesn't seem as powerful as he thought since it's in Defense Position. "Pretty cool monster, but that doesn't mean I can attack it!" he exclaimed. "You only have 900 LP. Once I take out remove your Odd-Eyes, you're wide open!"

Yasuko glances at Kalin over her shoulder, giving him a stern gaze. "We'll see about that," she said. "I activate my Quick-Play Spell! Book of Eclipse!" Yasuko flips up her face-down Quick-Play Spell Card: Book of Eclipse. "This card changes all our monsters' position to face-down!" The spell card reveals itself, and a green light is emitted from the spell. Odd-Eyes Phantom and Kalin's monsters are switched to face-down Defense Position.

"Kalin, you think you've outsmarted me with that negation, but I now know your game, and this card was all I needed to ensure I win this match," said Yasuko. "I am not someone you can trifle with. And for the record, I've faced duelists far stronger than you."

"Big whoop," Kalin mocked. "As soon as I flip up these monsters, I still have enough for one turn to take you down."

Yasuko glances over to Kalin on the side. "There's not going to be a next turn because when Book of Eclipse flips up all of your monsters at the End Phase, you draw a card for each monster that was flipped by this effect!" The moment Yasuko revealed the information, Kalin was shocked.

"What?!" Kalin gasped. It was right then that Kalin realized something about his field. The two monsters he has, the ogre and doom dragons, were both summoned on the previous turn, and because the archfiend was summoned, he had to draw a card. "It can't be," Kalin thought. "Even if I did flip up my monsters, Infernity Archfiend will still be face-down until the end of the turn, which means I'll be forced to draw a card." He thought he had Yasuko right where he wanted her so long as he had no cards in his hand, but instead, Kalin fell right into her play. "Damn it! No one's been able to outplay me before," he thought, jaws tightening from the frustration. "I underestimated this squirt!"

"Kalin!" Yasuko suddenly called, getting his attention. "I have a job to do. Someone to protect. I am going to make sure I see this person and not let you or anyone else stand in the way!"

Kalin was impressed by Yasuko's determination to make sure Riley was protected. He wanted to know more about this Yasuko girl who managed to keep on fighting. No matter what happens at this point, he draws a card at the end of the turn.

"I end my turn," he concluded. "And that means all my monsters are flipped up, which means I draw a card for each one." Once he reaches the End Phase, all three monsters are flipped up in Defense Position. Kalin draws three cards from his deck.

Turn 6: Yasuko (1x card)

Yasuko twists the throttle to make sure she's ahead of Kalin. Now that Kalin has cards in his hand, Yasuko can go on the offensive against him. "My turn!" Yasuko draws a card from her deck. She looked at the card she drew, and it was Amazing Pendulum. This was one of the cards Yuya gave to her before the Arc League Championship. "How ironic," she thought.

"I activate the Spell, Amazing Pendulum!" Yasuko declared. "This lets me add two "Magician" Pendulum monsters from my Extra Deck to my hand!" She chooses to add Oafdragon Magician and Dragonpit Magician back to her hand. "I add Oafdragon and Dragonpit Magician!" Her duel disk ejects the two pendulum monsters in her Extra Deck to let her add them back to her hand.

Now that she's got her monsters back, it's time to make a counterattack. "Kalin, let me show you just how much of a duelist I am!" she exclaimed. "I place my Scale 2 Oafdragon Magician and my Scale 8 Dragonpit Magician in both my Pendulum Zones!" And with that, Yasuko activates both her Oafdragon Magician (Scale 2) and Dragonpit Magician (Scale 8) at her Pendulum Zones, reforming the rainbow "Pendulum" on her blade. Once more, the oafdragon sorcerer and the dragonpit wizard reappear in her Pendulum Zone, floating in the air with their respective pendulum scale numbers.

"With these two monsters, I can Pendulum Summon monsters between levels 3 to 7 simultaneously," said Yasuko. "Hear my soul roaring upon thy. I call forth the energy of my heart to unleash the flames of solemnity from within! I Pendulum Summon! Revive, my monsters!" A portal rips open in the sky, raining down the monsters Yasuko wants to Pendulum Summon: Nobledragon Magician and Mythical Beast Medusa in Defense Position.

"Come back, Nobledragon Magician and Medusa!" The nobledragon priestess and the mythical medusa have come back to the field.

Kalin was not impressed. "So what? Pendulum Summon won't change the outcome. My monsters are still alive and stronger than yours!" he pointed out.

"That's what you think!" Yasuko snapped. "Level 3 Nobledragon Magician tunes with level 4 Medusa!" Once more, the nobledragon priestess raises her staff to ring it, turning herself into three green rings. The rings scan the medusa, turning the monster into four white orbs.

(3 + 4 = 7)

"I Synchro Summon! Come forth, the fiery dragon of meteors! Odd-Eyes Meteorburst Dragon!" Yasuko tunes the nobledragon priestess with her level 4 Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon to Synchro Summon Odd-Eyes Meteorburst Dragon (ATK 2500/DEF 2000) in Attack Position. The white light emits a meteor that rockets out of the wormhole and unfolds itself, revealing itself a red dragon with heterochromia red and blue eyes.

Yasuko can begin her next move with the meteor dragon on her field. "When Meteorburst Dragon is Special Summoned, I can target one Pendulum Monster in my Pendulum Zone and Special Summon it?" She gestures to the dragon pit wizard in her other zone. "I target my Dragonpit Magician and Special Summon it?" Once she targets her Dragonpit Magician (ATK 900/DEF 2700) and Special Summons it in Defense Position, the dragonpit wizard disappears from the sky before reappearing on the field.

"So what?" Kalin rebuffed. "Your monster doesn't have enough power to take down my monsters!" Kalin crackles with excitement. "You might as well call it quit! Cuz I'm gonna squash you like a bug!"

"Don't count on it!" Yasuko snapped. "I Overlay Odd-Eyes Meteorburst Dragon and Dragonpit Magician to build the Overlay Network!" Yasuko takes both the meteorburst dragon and the dragonpit wizard, turning them into red and blue lights before entering the galaxy vortex right before her.

Kalin was baffled, shocked by the sudden appearance of a summoning method he had never seen before. "What the hell is this?!" he gasped. It wasn't just him that was surprised. Marlene and Casey were awestruck by the foreign summoning method.

"This is an Xyz Summon! And this is where we end this! I Xyz Summon! Come, flaming dragon with molten lava! Burn down all those who disturb your slumber! Volnigesh the Black Lava Dragoon!" She Overlays her Odd-Eyes Meteorburst and Dragonpit to Xyz Summon Volnigesh the Black Lava Dragoon (ATK 2500/DEF 2100) (OU: 2) in Attack Position. The next monster Yasuko summoned is a black humanoid dragoon wielding two long swords and riding a white armored horse beast. Two purple Overlay Units rotate around the monster.

Kalin could not believe his eyes when he saw the Xyz monster. He never imagined there could be more than just a Synchro Summon. "No friggin' way," he uttered.

"You may be prepared for all kinds of situations, but this one's not the one you're going to get out of," said Yasuko. "I detach two Overlay Units to activate Volneigsh's special effect!" The volnigesh dragoon slashes two purple orbs rotating around it.

(Volnigesh the Black Lava Dragoon: OU 2 0)

"Volnigesh lets me target one card on the field and destroy it, and if the card I destroyed was a monster, I could target one monster I control to have it gain ATK points equal to its level times 3!"

She then activates volnigesh's effect to detach two materials to target one card on the field and destroy it. "I target your Void Ogre Dragon!" Once she has declared her target, the volnigesh dragoon rides over to make two giant slashes at the dragon, destroying the monster with a giant explosion. Kalin can feel the shockwaves coursing around him.

"Damn!" he cursed. "This is not what I expect!"

"Then expect my Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon to gain ATK points!" Yasuko reminded. As the smoke disappears around Kalin, Odd-Eyes Phantom gains more attack power equal to the ogre dragon's level.

(Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon: ATK 2500 4900)

"It won't matter! So long as all my monsters are in Defense Position, there's no way I hell you could get me," Kalin pointed out.

From the stands, Casey had to agree with the guy. Yasuko's monsters are still not powerful enough to take down the ogre and doom dragons. "He's got a point," she affirmed. "Kalin still has his Doom Dragon, and even if she does attack that monster, it won't be enough to bring down Kalin's life points." She turns to her grandma, wondering if she still thinks Yasuko can beat Kalin. "What do you think?"

"What do I think?" Marlene mused. "Checkmate."

Riley turns to the old lady with a curious gaze, and Casey raises one eyebrow. "Checkmate?" she repeated. Casey and Riley exchanged glances, confused about what the old lady was trying to imply.

"For Kalin, I mean," Marlene pointed out.

As if the old lady could see into the future, Yasuko takes her last card from her hand. "Not when I have this card to deal with that!" She then activates the Quick-Play Spell Card: Enemy Controller. "I activate the Quick-Play Spell, Enemy Controller!" she declared. "This card lets me tribute one monster I control to target one of my opponent's monsters and take control of it until the End Phase!" She turns to tribute her volnigesh dragoon, turning it into dust. "I tribute Volnigesh to target your Infernity Doom Dragon and take control of it!"

"What?!" Kalin gasped. Before he knew it, the doom dragon on his left disappeared from his side, and the dragon reappeared on Yasuko's field.

"And as I recall, since I have no cards in my hand, I can activate Doom Dragon's special effect to target one monster on your field and destroy it, and then inflict damage equal to half of its ATK!" said Yasuko. "Enemy Controller was the last card in my hand, so that means I meet your requirements!" The doom dragon roars to power up its horn. The dragon unleashed a green lightning bolt when its horn was glowing green to destroy the archfiend monster.

Kalin recalls something about the Action Cards being on the field and looks ahead to see if any are coming his way. He saw an Action Card approaching and twisted his throttle up. "Not yet!" he shouted. "I can still make this happen!"

Yasuko heard him and peeked over her shoulder, spotting Kalin going for an Action Card. Yasuko has to think of something because the doom dragon cannot resolve its effect if she has a card in the hand. She saw a small exit that led down under a bridge. She can't be able to outrun Kalin's duel runner with hers, so she takes the exit and under the bridge. It loops up to a destroyed bridge overhead. She can see the Action Card from where Kalin is going. She cannot let him take it. Quickly, she puts the throttle into overdrive, feeling the duel runner jolting forward as fast as a bullet.

"Crap balls, this is gonna suck!" Yasuko yelped as the oncoming bridge closed in fast. She braces herself for the jump. With one big leap, the duel runner flies like a pigeon. The lack of roads is making her anxious. In the air, she can see Kalin below and the Action Card approaching. She guides her duel runner to the small gap between the Action Card and Kalin.

"Heads up!" Yasuko called.

Kalin notices the shadow on the road between him and the approaching Action Card. He looks up and yelps when Yasuko's about to land close to him. "Whoa!" He screeches his duel runner to pull back, allowing Yasuko to land hard with a thud that made her shake from her seat. The Action Card zips past them. "Doom Dragon, destroy Archfiend!" With the Action Card gone, the doom dragon hits the archfiend with the green thunderbolt, destroying the monster. "And since Infernity Archfiend was destroyed, you take damage equal to half of its ATK points." Like what Yasuko explained, the doom dragon fires another bolt over to Kalin, hitting his duel runner. He can feel the electrical shocks coursing through as he is inflicted with effect damage.

Casey could not believe what she was seeing. Her grandma was right. This is a checkmate for Kalin. "No way, she overcame him?" she inquired. "I've never seen anyone take down Kalin like that."

Marlene simply smiles, proud of what the girl did. "You see, I know there is something about that girl when she first came to the door," she assured. "Now." She turns to offer her hand to Riley. "Young lad, would you kindly lead me down the stairs?" Riley was perplexed about what Marlene wanted him to do.

With Kalin's monsters gone, it was time for the final blow. "This is where it all ends!" Yasuko exclaimed. "Battle! Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon, attack Kalin directly!" Odd-Eyes Phantom turns around and charges its mouth to power its attack beam. "Phantasma Burst Strike!" Odd-Eyes Phantom unleashed a blue spiraling beam with skulls around it. The attack pierce through the sky and at Kalin.

He never thought in a million years that someone like Yasuko would beat him in a Turbo Duel, but a duel that's not like anything he's encountered before. He snares angrily as the attack blasts his duel runner with an explosion, wiping out his life points. "Damn it!" he exclaimed.

WINNER: Yasuko Yukihana

Once the duel ended, Kalin's duel runner steams out with billows of smoke after a prolonged ride through high acceleration. It comes to a stop after the duel runner is out of power.

Kalin couldn't get his grip to let go as frustration consumed his actions. "Shit," he cursed. "I can't believe a little punk like you could defeat my handless combo." He heard the sound of Yasuko's duel runner coming to him. Looking up, he saw Yasuko parking her duel runner before him and removing her helmet.

"There is a bigger world than you think," she said. "Now that I've won, you promise to never call security on me or Riley."

Kalin couldn't help but relent since the duel was final. "Right," he responded.

Footsteps were heard, and the two duelists turned to three people entering the stadium road. Marlene seems like she enjoyed the duel. Despite the circumstances between them, she clapped her hands as if thrilled about the duel.

"Splendid!" Marlene cheered. "That was a fantastic duel." She comes to Yasuko and grabs her hand. "I always had a feeling something's different about you." Marlene senses a presence and glances at the little boy holding his teddy bear. "Isn't she something, little one?"

Riley held his head up, staring at the old lady with curiosity. He wonders if Marlene is referring to him. He looked down at the ground, unresponsive to the little one as usual. Marlene returned to Yasuko and said, "You and your little friend can stay with us for a while." She looked to her granddaughter to see if she approved of the outcome. "I think it's fair that the girl has a promise to keep, don't you think?"

Casey shrugged. She has now seen what Yasuko was capable of, and if she can beat someone like Kalin, it's only fair for her to stay at her place. "I suppose," she said.

Kalin grumbled, still upset that he lost the duel. "Maybe if that so-called Action Turbo Duel hadn't happened, I still would've won."

Yasuko rolled her eyes. She has to wonder one thing. "By the way, how'd you three get here?" she asked.

To answer her question, Marlene takes out a key from her pocket. "Just because I'm an old lady doesn't mean I can't get around town, can I?" She clicked the key, and three loud beeps sounded off. Yasuko had to guess it was a vehicle.

"Now, let's go home, I bet you kids are all starving after all that Turbo Duel," said Marlene. "We're making some anchovy pizza with garlic and sausage." She grabs her granddaughter's hand to start walking back to where she parked her vehicle.

Only Kalin and the two Lancers were in the stadium. Kalin didn't like his loss but thought about Yasuko and her responsibilities to the kid. "Let me ask you something," he questioned. "Does that kid really mean to you?"

Yasuko knows he's referring to Riley. She turns to the kid right beside her. It was an interesting question Kalin asked her. She has nothing in common with the kid other than they're both orphans. Yet, Riley needs his brother, so Yasuko will make sure Riley reunites with his brother. "He does," she said. "Riley's someone I have to look after."

Kalin nodded once with understanding. "I see," he said. He seems to think deeply before Kalin twists his stick to start the duel runner. "C'mon, kids, it's getting late. We best be heading back." The girl nodded back and took Riley's hand to guide him to her duel runner. With that, the two duelists started their duel runners to head back.
