For some reason, I had a distinct feeling that Thalia wanted to punch me. I'm not particularly sure why. Ah, it was probably hormones.
I glance to my right, towards Halfblood Hill, where I could see Horologium running up the hill with Annabeth within him. Once he gets her across the camp boundaries, she should be safe. Not even Hades would dare risk the full wrath of every other god.
I turn my focus on the angered demoness, the Fury known as Megaera. She also happened to be a very minor goddess of jealousy, but according to her profile's description, her and her sisters' divinity was so small that they could be killed by demigods, though they would be able to return from death like a monster. Megaera was ugly as sin, with a snout like nose, leathery grey skin, a head full of damaged pitch black hair that looked as if it hadn't been washed in centuries. Black tattered robes, that were more like wisps of silk, covered her body. Blood-stained and dirty, I could see a skull attached to the ends of the robe. Her bat-like wings revealed their full span, making her bigger than she seemed.
"You dare oppose Lord Hades?!" She questioned with a vile sneer. I had managed to cut off both her hands, but judging from the steam coming from the stumps, they would come back soon. Flames seem to emanate like an aura around her eyes. "You are not enough to defeat us all, demigod!"
I've been training for this day for over a month. 20 hours a day of nearly non-stop training, levelling up my skills and experimenting with my skills. No matter what, I'd survive the day. But my goal was to make sure that Thalia, Luke, and Halcyon survived as well. Annabeth was already on her way to safety, so now I had to distract these monsters long enough for them to escape.
And that was why I plunged Athanatos into the heart of Megaera. I don't think the Fury expected me to do such a 'disrespectful' thing, judging by the look of utter shock in her eyes. As her wings turn to golden dust, fire fumes out of her mouth, as if getting ready to spew flames onto my face. "YOU WILL REGRET THIS DEMIGOD! MY SISTERS WILL END YOU!" Her demonic mouth begins to open, a fireball revealed at the centre.
I was about to let go of Athanatos and duck down, but instead a spear covered in azure lightning pierced the underside of Megaera's chin, and went right through her maw. The action seemed to force the Fury's mouth shut, and in a loud blast, Megaera's head is engulfed in flames, a loud scream rings throughout the field. I take out Athanatos as the rest of the body disappears.
Taking a step back, I quickly glance at a new notification and grin at the new item I had received for killing Megaera, presumably as a Spoil of War.
Name: Furies Gauntlet
Type: Armour
Rank: B
Item Effects: +15% Damage on Attacks, +30% Resistance to Fire, Empath(*)
Item Description: A spoil of war which is gained from killing Megaera, Fury of Envy.
A surprisingly good reward. The Gauntlets also gave me a max skill that allowed me to detect what emotion a person was feeling. Useful, but not what I needed at the moment. The Fire Resistance was far more favourable.
"Thanks for the help, Thalia" I say to the teen, "Though I could've done it myself." Was I developing an ego? Sure. But I was getting stronger and stronger everyday.
"Ha. If getting your face burnt off was part of your plan, then I guess you really are a kid!" Urgh, do I have to save her? I'm sure being a tree isn't that bad… But Chiron would be annoyingly disappointed. Maybe the Hunters of Artemis will come soon.
A large pack of hellhounds surround us. Perhaps 20 or so? The two remaining furies flapped their tattered wings as they remained stationary in the air, a perpetual snarl on their faces. It seems they were waiting for the right chance to attack us. I take a quick look at Thalia's stats. Annoyingly, they've increased a bit. Not a jaw-dropping amount, but a good deal.
The azure glow of lightning outlined Thalia's sharp features as the rumble of thunder shook the stormy dark clouds. "Your dad's watching" I tell Thalia, who tensed up, "And so are most of the gods…" I could feel the bloodlust of a thousand soldiers off in the distance, staring towards us. Though I didn't really have any terrain-sensing skills, the fact that I could feel such an aura meant that Ares was watching us.
Thalia's eyes released a blue glow, and a vicious grin that could only come from a demigod came upon her face. "Well, let's give those assholes a show" Judging from the sound of lightning, Zeus didn't enjoy being called an asshole. Bah, who cares?
Without warning, Thalia leaped into the air towards the pack of hellhounds, and pierced her spear through the abdomen of the monster, lightning going rampant around her. Well, I guess I can't let her go ahead of me. I coat my sword in frost and light, and charge at the beasts. Whilst I haven't learned any new techniques from Sasaki Kojiro, I've still become more and more proficient with my sword, and have made some moves of my own.
I stab Athanatos into a hellhound, though unfortunately not in a vital spot, and grin as I could finally test my new move on (semi-)living beings. With my sword still inside the monster, I began to light into the sword, thanks to Photomancy, and in a few seconds I unleashed all the light magic inside the blade, causing what seems to be cracks of lights to appear on the hellhound. The Hellhound could feel something wrong, as it lets out one final howl before exploding in a burst of light.
"Oh shit! That was brutal, Gill!" Thalia shouts. And I knew it was pretty cruel to cause something to explode from the inside, but as long as I did it on monsters, then it was arguably ethical. I'd probably save that attack, Photon Explosion, for monsters or very powerful enemies.
With my sword free, I continued to generate light magic into it, and when I was sure there was enough, I let out a wide slash into the air, releasing an arc of light magic at the hellhounds. Photon Arc managed to hit 3 grouped up hellhounds, though it wasn't yet powerful enough to kill them.
As they lick their wounds in an attempt to nurse themselves, which was oddly animalistic for demigod-devourers, I take the chance to charge at them and slice them with my sword, though this time I used good old fashioned metal, rather than magic.
The mutts disappear into gold dust, but as I look around, I pale as I notice that the number of hellhounds hadn't changed… no, I think it might've increased. Judging by the cackles of the two Furies in the air, I was right. Shit, would I have to use my trump card so soon?
But before I could even begin to do so, I heard a familiar voice from up the hill. "Gill! Catch!" Luke shouts, as he throws down a spherical vial towards. I easily catch it with my free hand, and nearly drop it in surprise when I look at what it was. Greek Fire. Luke seriously made some more of this shit? How? He never did that in the books, or rather nobody mentioned if he did that. "We managed to make some with the older campers that helped us get here." Ah that made sense. I would ask him to help out fighting, but I noticed that his right arm was wrapped in bandages. Damn, how did that even happen?
Thankfully, since he and Hal had clearly made it past the Camp Boundaries, and the fact that Horologium was no longer draining my MP, meant that it was only me and Thalia down here. And the older campers were out in the forests, presumably fighting off even more packs of hellhounds.
So now, my main goal was to get Thalia the fuck out of here. "Thalia!" I shout to the Daughter of Zeus, as she takes down another hellhound. "Let's get out of here!" I pointedly look towards the top of the hill. I noticed that from behind Halcyon, stood a small, worried, blonde girl, who was biting her nails. She was about my age, with fear wrought on her face. But what drew my notice the most was her piercing eyes, as grey as clouds in the sky.
Annabeth Chase. The Architect of Olympus, Daughter of Athena, and future girlfriend of Percy Jackson. The two do make quite a cute pair.
But now wasn't the time to think about my shipping habits, as Thalia snaps me from my thoughts. "Fuck! Fine. Let's go before more of the mutts come out of the ground." I guess she noticed after taking a quick count of monsters like I did. The daughter of Zeus leaps over the horde of hellhounds, jumping off of one like stepping stone, as I charged my way through demon dogs.
Thalia and I join up as we manage to make it past the pack of hellhounds, killing a couple on the way. With a clear path ahead of us, and a small army behind us, I throw the vial of greek fire behind me, hopefully giving us some time to make a break for it.
After the sound of break glass, I can feel the scorching heat of an inferno as Thalia and I run to the top of the hill. I hear the howls and whimpers of the hellhounds, and I did feel a little bad for killing them in such a gruesome way, but it was either us or them. Plus they would come back from the dead anyway.
However, as I made my way up, I was tackled from the side, with claws digging to my abdomen and back. I'm thrown to the ground, with blood seeping out of where the claws had pierced me. Standing above me, with a malicious sneer, stood the Fury of Vengeance, Tisiphone. Unlike both her sisters, she had white hair that seemed to emphasise her crimson eyes, her skin was far paler than her sisters', her face was so gaunt that she looked more akin to a skeleton than a demon, and deep scars decorated her body.
With flames dancing around her fingers, she glared at me, "You will regret killing my sister, foolish demigod. Lord Hades had no quarrel with you! And now you shall feel his fury!" However before she could hurt me, Thalia crashed into her, though clearly unwillingly. I quickly got up, and looked to where Thalia had been thrown from. Floating in the air, with a furious snarl, was the Fury of Anger, Alecto. It appears she had intercepted Thalia before she could get to the boundary.
I ignored the stinging pain of the claw wounds, and looked behind me. Thalia and Tisiphone were facing one another, though neither had made a move yet. I guess that left Alecto to me. I put Athanatos back into its scabbard, as the Fury in front of me cackles, "Putting away your sword, demigod? Have you given up already?"
I grin, as I clench my fists, "I'm gonna need both my hands free to beat you, hag!" Light begins to shine around my hands, creating a glove-like structure made of a light so bright that it obscures my hands from sight. I ran towards Alecto, who didn't move. It seems she was pitying me. What a silly little mistake. As soon as I come close enough, I jab my fist of light into Alecto's face, and with a strength she hadn't expected, I punch her down to the ground, throwing her several metres away. She lets out a shout as she tumbles.
This is the power of a skill that had reached level 50, Hands of Light, the skill I had gotten by accident when I first played the guitar in the Amphitheatre. Nearly everyday for the past month I had been using that skill whenever I could. At every second of the day, my hands were surrounded by a bright glow, though everyone thought it was a trick of the light. It kinda was.
As I levelled the spell up, the cost of usage also went down even if it was by a slight amount, meaning I could use it even further, and thus levelling it up further. After level 20, I could even use the spell to break rocks and trees (Though that took a couple of hits to do so).
And as a result of my efforts, I got to see a demon lady eating mud. "How!?" Alecto asks, or rather demands, "No child of Apollo has ever shown such prowess for battle like you have! What are you?!"
I say nothing as I rush to her, making sure she doesn't rise to the air. I launch my fist at her face, but she blocks it in time by crossing her arms in an X-formation. However, I don't stop, as I keep punching her face, regardless of the arms blocking my attacks. She and I knew that if she were to stop blocking, it would spell her doom, because despite having lived for millenia, the Furies were pretty weak. They existed to strike fear and carry out errands for Hades, but they were never meant for genuine combat. I mean, how else did Percy Jackson defeat Alecto? He had 0 training, and as far as I knew, he never joined any physical extracurricular activity. The reason he survived that day was because his natural strength far overpowered Alecto by her lonesome.
Though Alecto was stopping my fists from reaching her face, they were still hurting her. There was only so much damage her forearms could take. I could tell that she was at her breaking point, so on my next hit, I held my hand back further to launch a stronger attack.
And that's when Alecto struck. In my idiocy, I had mistook Alecto's weak stats and power as a signal that she lacked combative experience. I was wrong.
As soon as she saw that my attack this time would take slightly longer, she let go of her defending stance, and ducked down, causing me to miss my punch. And with a cruel cackle, she brings her claws to my chest, and in a single slash, she leaves a deep wound with blood seeping out.
I let out a scream of pain, and felt tears in my eyes. The pain tolerance of a child was not pleasant. I could feel blood slowly seeping out of my wound, and my vision becoming slightly unclear. I could still fight, but I need to end this soon. I look from the corner of my eye towards Thalia, and smile as I see that she was having better luck than I. Tisiphone had both her wings cut off, and both her arms seemed to be broken. Scorch marks covered the Furies body, presumably from lightning. Good, that meant she would soon be able to make a run for it.
I take out Athanatos, and look at the grinning Alecto, "If you bow now and praise Lord Hades, demigod, I may make your pathetic death quick and… relatively painless." Fucking bitch. I died once, and I'm not going to die again, especially not to someone who's had less lines in the books than fucking Blackjack!
I coat Athanatos in ice and light, and charge at Alecto. This time, she would not be underestimating me, and was ready to slash at me to deal with the final blow. But I had many tricks up my sleeve. As I run at her, with my free hand I cast Fireblast, a spell that resulted from mixing Fireball and Windblast. The result created a wall of flames that pushed ahead of me and onto a surprised Alecto. Though surprise was all it did. She was a Fury from the underworld. She naturally had a high Fire Resistance.
I take the opportunity, and cut off her right arm and wing in a single slash, ignoring the fire. She lets out a scream, but doesn't buckle to the ground. With her back turned to me, I create a Heliosphere. The miniature ball of solar energy is thrown at Alecto, and makes contact with the Fury's back. The power of the sun sends a searing pain throughout the demon, and she screams. A scream of utter pain and fear rings throughout the battlefield, and the Fury falls onto her back.
I walk to the Fury of Anger, and look down upon her, breathing heavily and using my free hand to put pressure on my deepest wound. The Fury writhes in pain, and looks at me with a mixture of fear and rage. I decide, what with all the trouble she had caused me, to fuck with her one more time. I crouched down, and whispered to Alecto, who strangely listened closely, "Tell your Lord, that Thalia Grace should not bear the sin of Maria Di Angelo's murder".
It was idiotic, I admit it, but right now, I did not give a fucking shit about the ramifications.
At my words, the demon's eyes widen in shock, and she looks like she is about to scream something. But I do not let her, as I cut her head off with Athanatos. Golden dust fills the air as Alecto goes back to the hellscape she came from.
I look to my left, and see Tisiphone also disintegrating, and Thalia's spear through her chest. But before the demoness disappears, she lets out one last shout, "OH LORD HADES! ON BEHALF OF MY SISTERS, WE WHO HAVE SERVED FOR MILLENNIA, PLEASE BRING DOWN THESE DEMIGODS, WHO DARE DEFY YOUR NAME!" And with that the Fury of Vengeance dies as well.
I did not have a good feeling about this. Not at all.
"Thalia! We need to run!" She nods, and sprints to me. She had also taken a bit of damage, but not as bad as me.
"Fuck, Gill! Are you alright?" Thalia asks, with genuine concern to my surprise. Ah, I suppose I didn't look like I was at my peak health. "Do you need me to carry you?" As much as I would love to not walk, I could bear the burden for now.
Before I could say anything, the earth beneath us began to rumble and shake as if there was an earthquake. With despair replacing any emotion I had earlier, I looked back to the former battlefield, and saw that the rumbling was centred around there. "Run. We need fucking run, Thalia!"
As if having long given up on the thought of taking charge of me, Thalia listened to my words and fucking lifted me up from the ground and began running with me. I'm sure I'd be laughing or embarrassed were it not for the soon-to-come wrath of the God of the Underworld. On Thalia's back, I had a clear view of the battlefield. And I paled as I saw what was happening.
The earth began to tear apart as fissures appeared, with an ominous purple glow emanating. And then I saw it. From one of the fissures, came out a white, ivory, hand of a skeleton. More and more, skeletal hands rose from the earth, and soon, entire skeletons appeared on the battlefield. They wore traditional Spartan armour, the kind you would see in most media, and all had a sword and shield. This did not look good.
A large squad of Spartan skeletons were after us. Just my luck.
The skeletons marched slowly, which allowed Thalia and I to reach the top of the hill. Luke, Halcyon, and Annabeth stood still, fear making their body rigid. As Thalia dropped me down to the ground, I could see Chiron and a group of demigods heading towards us. A little late for that.
But we had made it past the camp boundaries. We were safe… right?
And then an epiphany came to me. Something I should have realised ages ago. The reason why Camp Halfblood was under siege in Sea of Monsters. The reason why Camp Halfblood had a protective boundary in the first place. Thalia's Tree provided a magical barrier around camp… but that didn't exist now. Fuck. We weren't safe. But I had an idea.
"Everyone! We need to keep running!" I commanded, burying my shame for not remembering this sooner. "We're still not safe here!" They looked between one another, and Annabeth looked at Hal… before they all nodded and began to run down the hill, to the camp. Good.
Until I noticed that Thalia was still standing. "Don't think I noticed that you weren't going to run. What the hell are you planning?" Hmm… This could actually be good. If she followed my order, then this could work better than I hoped.
"Thalia, do you trust me?" I ask her. She looked conflicted for a second, before nodding. "Then, when I tell you to… use your lightning on me." It was risky, but it genuinely might work. It was a mad plan, but mad enough to work.
"WHAT!? ARE YOU FUCKING INSANE!?" She, rightfully, screams, "I've done that once, you're mad if you think I'm going to do that again!" Hmm… Perhaps I am mad.
I take out my Potion of Mana, "Well, it's either that, or I die. Your choice Thals." I take a swig of the potion and drink all of it. It didn't recover nearly enough to pull this off. I absolutely need Thalia's help.
I stand upon the hill, facing down the horde of skeletal soldiers. Fire consumes the grass, and the taste of blood fills my mouth. I put my hands next to one another, and together I create a large Heliosphere between them. I raise my arms to the air, and take a deep breath.
And then I flowed my MP into it.
Larger, and larger it became, as I slowly put more of my MP into it. I made sure that I averaged about 10 MP per Second. Soon it was about as big as Thalia, but it needed to be bigger. "THALIA! NOW!" I shouted, as my MP was beginning to become lower. The skeletons were at the foot of the hill by now. I need to go faster! I could sense that Thalia was hesitating, just like when we fought the child of the Hydra, "COME ON THALIA! I CAN TAKE IT!"
I hear a deep breath, and then… unimaginable pain. Every nerve was feeling the power of lightning, and suffering, but I had to persevere! Already, I could see that my MP had stopped decreasing, though it wasn't increasing, but still my Heliosphere was growing… but my HP was steadily declining. And after the beating I had taken from Alecto, I was seriously in need of HP.
But that was why I had been training my Vitakinesis skill for. I could use the skill to heal my own body, even unconsciously. I didn't need to perform any specific action for it. But… It did take away my MP. I had to create a delicate balance… Or I could risk it all.
"THALIA!" I struggled to shout, "I NEED MORE POWER!" Once again, she hesitated. But still, she trusted me. I felt more and more power flow into my body, and so, with increased input, I put more MP into the Heliosphere, and put the rest into Full Body Healing. It was a delicate equilibrium. Even one slip, and I'm fucked.
The Skeletons are on the cusp of the hill's peak, and the Heliosphere is as big as a bus, "Thalia! Run!" The lightning stops, and so does the pain. Thalia says something to me, but I can't hear it. I don't know if she had left or not, but I had to believe in her. If I held onto this anymore, I'd die along with the skeletons, though with the size of the explosion that would result from the Heliosphere, there'd be a good chance I'd actually die.
With one final breath, I cast my hands down, throwing the giant Heliosphere to the skeletons. The miniature sun lands upon the hordes upon hordes of skeletons, and an explosion that could rock the earth is unleashed.
A familiar heat engulfs me. Oh so familiar.
