Never Til Now – Ashley Cooke/Brett Young

I'm a picture perfect painting of imperfection

I'm a walking definition of unsettled and restless

The needle in my compass points anywhere but home

I thought I'd always be alone, 'cause

I never wanted to tap my brakes

I never wanted to settle down

I was always one foot out the door

I never thought about turning 'round.

Never saw myself with a white picket fence dug into the ground

Never 'til now

Out of all the prayers I've prayed

You're heaven's answer

Out of all the hell I've been through

I never thought you'd be out there

But thank God you were out there, cause

I never wanted to tap my brakes

I never wanted to settle down

I was always one foot out the door

I never thought about turning 'round.

Never saw myself with a white picket fence dug into the ground

Never 'til now

Never 'til you walked into that bar

Never 'til we talked over that sone

Never 'til we danced 'til closin' time

Never 'til you proved me wrong

'bout the kind of love you fall so hard

You never hit the ground

Never 'til now

Oh, never 'til now

Never 'til you walked into that bar

Never 'til we talked over that sone

Never 'til we danced 'til closin' time

Never 'til you proved me wrong

'bout the kind of love you fall so hard

You never hit the ground

Never 'til now

Yeah, the kind of love you fall so hard

You never hit the ground

Never 'til now

Prudence Featherington had the worst singing voice he had ever heard. 'Oh dear. What can the matter be?' Your voice that's what. He had to excuse himself, if only to protect his hearing. He was sure he had heard a dog start howling which was still more in key than Prudence.

"Colin. Might I have a word?" Penelope had been very quiet at the dinner. Not that she was a loud person normally. In fact she was quite out of place in her own family and more at home with his own family.

"Pen. Of course." He could always spare her a few minutes. She was sweet and a good friend to Eloise.

"It is a rather delicate matter. I wish I did not have cause to raise it, but I believe you deserve to know." She kept looking down, not holding his gaze for more than a few seconds. What was she so nervous about?

She was so serious that he could not help but tease her. "Is there something on my face? Has it been there all evening? It has, hasn't it?" He didn't even get a small smile. "Sorry. Um, go on."

"I have wanted to talk to you since the engagement was announced, but we were always in company." It seemed so strange that he was engaged after ducking out of introductions that his Mother had attempted to make. But there was something about Marina.

"So, this is something about Marina?" Penelope and Marina seemed out of sorts with each other lately. What had happened? They had been thick as thieves previously.

"Her heart belongs to another." Strange, Marina hadn't indicated that she was interested in another suitor. There had certainly been plenty.

"What?" Surely Penelope was wrong.

"His name is Sir George Crane. He is a first son, a soldier." He hadn't heard of a George Crane in town. "They grew up in neighbouring properties in the country. I am sorry, but I have seen their love letters. I felt you should know before it was too late."

It was sweet that she was trying to protect him. He took hold of her hand. "You really are very good. You know that?" He guessed that it was because Penelope and Eloise were close like sisters. "Did you think that I would care that she had fond feelings for another before we met?" She was an attractive woman. A man would have to be blind not to notice her.

"No you misunderstand. Theirs was no mere flirtation. Marina loves this man. She loves him still." Penelope was young. She clearly had misunderstood the situation.

"And yet she's marrying me. Trust me Pen, do not fret." He hoped Penelope would meet someone who truly deserved her. "I know my mind and Marina's. We understand each other."

Any further protests Penelope could make were silenced with Marina's arrival. Penelope returns to no doubt have to sit through another off-key tune from Prudence. Perhaps she would be more accepting of them after the wedding. He hoped so. He would hate to lose their friendship.
