Invisible – Linkin Park
I've got an aching head
Echos and buzzing noises
I knows the words we said
But wish I could've turned our voices down
This is not black and white
Only organized confusion
I'm just trying to get it right
And in spite of all I should've done
I was not mad at you
I was not trying to tear you down
The words that I could've used
I was too scared to say out loud
If I cannot break your fall
I'll pick you up right off the ground
If you felt invisible
I won't let you feel that now
Invisible
You didn't get your way
Nd it's an empty feeling
You've got a lot to say
And you just want to know you're being heard
But this is not black and white
There are no clear solutions
And I'm just trying to get it right
And in spite of all I should've done
I was not mad at you
I was not trying to tear you down
The words that I could've used
I was too scared to say out loud
If I cannot break your fall
I'll pick you up right off the ground
If you felt invisible
I won't let you feel that now

How he wished he didn't have to attend this ball. But it was Daphne's first ball as the Duchess of Hastings, and he wouldn't let his sister down. He spotted Penelope at the edge of the dancefloor looking as miserable as he felt. Perhaps they could cheer each other up. He informed Benedict that he was going to talk to Penelope so that his brother didn't feel obligated to keep him company.
He caught Penelope's eyes as he moved towards her, stunned that she looked as though she wanted to be anywhere but at this ball. "Enjoying your evening?"
"What?" Perhaps it was too noisy for her to hear him.
"Are you enjoying your evening?" It was a stupid question considering that Penelope looked as though she wished the ground would open up and swallow her whole.
"Ah..y..yes. I just came from the dance floor." Was she just saying that because no one had asked her to dance, and she didn't want him to think that she wasn't enjoying his sister's ball?
"I did not see you." Unfortunately, that didn't mean that she hadn't been on the dancefloor. Penelope was forever being overlooked. Which considering she was a redhead usually dressed in bright yellow was quite the accomplishment.
"I was in the back of the dancefloor. It was quite crowded, so .." No, it wasn't . "Colin-"
"Pen … I owe you an apology." He had just thought she was being protective because she was his sister's friend. "I did not see it at first, but I know you were only trying to prevent me from heartache with Miss Thompson and … And I was a fool." Even now he couldn't believe how blind he had been.
"You were not a fool." Ever his defender. "You merely believed yourself in love. One should never apologize for that. When one finds oneself in such an incredible position, and well, one should declare it… assuredly, fervently .. loudly." She had the gift of always making him smile no matter the situation. It was unusual for her to be so animated and passionate about something though. "Colin, I wish to tell you something."
"I have something I wish to tell you as well, Pen." Although he hated to stop her when she wasn't someone who was known for being so verbose. "I'm leaving. First thing tomorrow morning. I begin my tour. I'm to start in the Mediterranean. It was actually you who inspired me. You kept reminding me how much I longed for travel." He was sure part of her reminder was cautioning him in regards to Marina. But she had also always been encouraging when he talked about travelling. "Oh, umm …What was it you wished to say?"
"I don't remember." He shouldn't have interrupted her. Now she appeared to be retreating back into her shell.
"Shall we dance." Perhaps she would remember while they danced. She was a wonderful dancer. It was never a hardship asking her to dance.
"No. Umm … I am all danced out for the night, Colin." Had he said something wrong? Penelope never turned him down when he asked her to dance and only partially out of good manners. "Good luck on your tour." Then she practically sprinted from the ball. When had he begun repelling women? He ran their conversation through his head trying to work out what he had said that had made her run from him. He briefly considered going after her, but Penelope had an uncanny knack for disappearing right in front of you when she wanted to and sometimes when she didn't. Yes, this tour could not come too soon. It would be the perfect distraction from the emotional chaos his life had become.
