Can't Make You Love Me – Britney Spears

I'm just a girl with a crush on you

Don't care about money

It doesn't give me half the thrill

To the thought of you honey

If only I could trade the fancy cards

For a chance today, it's incomparable

I might be sitting with the movie stars

Everybody say that I have it all

But I can't make you love me

Is it my life or the things I do?

Can't make you love me

I'm just a girl with a crush on you

I have been through changes yeah

But I'm still the girl you used to know

It's made me no different

So tell me why you had to go

Oh baby, I will trade the fancy cards

For a chance today, it's in comparable

I might be sitting with the movie stars

Everybody say that I just have it all

But I can't make you love me

Is it my life or the things I do?

Can't make you love me

I'm just a girl with a crush on you

Just the thought of being close to you

It's incomparable

Should be happy with the life I live

And the things I do

Seems like I have it all

Can't make you make you love me baby

It's my life, what can I do?

Can't make you love me, alright

I'm just a girl with a crush on you

But I can't make you love me

Is it my life or the things I do?

Can't make you love me

I'm just a girl with a crush on you

I'm just a girl with a crush on you

The evening seemed to have promise of being entertaining what with so many gentlemen willing to turn themselves into performing monkeys, just for a chance that Miss Edwina Sharma would look favourably in their direction. Penelope only wanted the attention of one gentleman and he had no need to perform for her. Nor did she expect he would even if it was expected of him.

She excused herself from speaking with Miss Sharma when she spotted Colin. "So, what will it be for you tonight?" Although she hoped he hadn't set his sights on Miss Sharma so soon upon returning to London. "A song, a jig, some hoop rolling talent you've yet to share with the world."

That at least got a chuckle out of him. "I'm afraid I'm just a spectator." It was a relief although he was an excellent singer and dancer, so it was also a shame.

"So much interest shown in a young lady who none of us really know." Not that she didn't seem to be a sweet young lady, but it was constantly amazing how men would trip over themselves in the presence of someone new. Or perhaps she was a little envious that no gentleman would do so in order to gain her attention.

"Not a devotee of mystery, Pen?" He looked at her as though trying to figure out a fascinating puzzle.

"Me? No. I'm always turning to the final chapter first. Speaking of mysteries." Eloise was pre-occupied elsewhere so perhaps she could find out more about the mystery woman he had met on his travels without being dragged away. "You must tell me the name of the young lady you seem to have met while out of the country." And when she would be descending on the Ton.

Colin looked confused. "What can you mean?" Had he forgotten her already?

"You mentioned at the races you were never lonely. I only assumed … Never mind." What else was she to have thought? Just then a gentleman walked past rolling a hoop. "Look. There truly is someone hoop rolling tonight." Strange. She had been joking when she had mentioned it earlier.

"You are right." Oh, so there was a young lady. "I was not exactly lonely on my travels. I did begin a real conversation with someone." He talked to her all the time, but nothing ever came of it. "Someone I had known for a very long time. After everything that happened with Miss Thompson, I realised I never truly know this person." She felt a little guilty over her part in exposing Marina. But was he speaking of her? Had he finally noticed what was right in front of him? "Myself." So that would be a no.

"Yourself?" He had to be joking.

"I have you to thank." How had she caused him to find himself? "Your letters were so encouraging. I thought if Penelope can see me this way, surely I can too." So, this was a good thing. "I was just so distracted by Miss Thompson, so I cleared my head, swore off women and love and well, I only wanted to fully understand myself before stepping back into this world." Surely he could not mean all women.

"You've sworn off women then?" This evening had delivered a fair few ups and downs in the last five minutes.

"Well, for the time being." How long was he going to feel this way?

"I am a woman." He did not appear to be swearing off her anytime soon. Actually, he always seemed happy to see her.

"You are Pen." As much as she loved it when he called her that, she had a bad feeling about this. "You do not count." Just what every woman wants to hear. "You're my friend." Followed by that. She wasn't certain that made things any better.

"Of course. Your friend. How good to hear that." Inside she was dying. He had verbally stabbed her in the heart and then twisted the knife. Colin excused himself and she proceeded to fade into the wallpaper. Suddenly the evening didn't appear so entertaining.
