The engines at Vicarstown Sheds were getting ready for work when they heard a familiar bell and whistle. They looked to see Belle steaming happily into the Yard. "Good morning, everyone!" she called.

Good morning, Belle," replied Henry. "You seem very happy this morning."

"I am. I heard from the Fat Controller that my brother, Ross, is coming to visit."

"I didn't know you had a brother."

"Isn't that exciting?" grinned Hank. "Is he a fire engine like you?"

Belle chuckled. "No, he pulls local trains on the Mainland just like I did before joining the Search and Rescue Team. I'm lucky I have to collect more emergency supplies later. I left early to be here when he arrives."

Then, they all heard a whistle near the Vicarstown Bridge. Most of the engines didn't recognize it, but Belle did.

"That's him!"

"And that's my cue," whistled Rosie. "I'll let him know you're here."

A few minutes later, Ross puffed up to the Sheds. He was the same size and shape as Belle, but he had dark green paint and no water cannons. "Hullo, Belle," he smiled. "I was hoping I would see you."

The big blue tank engine grinned. "Welcome to Sodor, Ross, and these are some of my friends, Henry, Hank and Murdoch."

"Hullo," said Henry.

"Howdy, Ross," whistled Hank.

"Pleased to meet you," said Murdoch kindly.

"Thank you," Ross replied. "How have you been, Belle? Your water cannons were a success I suppose."

"Yes, Flynn and I fight fires together now, but I also collect supplies and help when there is an accident."

"Were you covering for another engine?" asked Henry.

"No," said Ross, "actually, your Controller wants me to help out for a while."

"Quite right," said a well-known voice. "Welcome, Ross. I hope you had a good run."

"Yes, Sir, and quite the welcome too."

"Splendid." And he turned to the other engines. "We are expecting more holidaymakers this summer and Connor, Caitlin, Mitchell and Laurence may need help. So, I have arranged for Ross come on trial. If he does well, I will know to ask for him if needed."

"There's no trouble there, Sir," insisted Belle. "Ross is very hard-working, indeed."

Belle was right. Ross did work hard. He helped Rebecca with heavy local trains, and he even proved capable of shunting in the Yards when no one was around. It didn't take long for even Gordon and James to like him.

One night, Belle was too tired to go back to the Rescue Centre, so she spent the night in Knapford Yard, but the next morning, she woke with a start as a line of trucks derailed in front of her. "Trembling tracks," she sighed. "What if someone needs my help?"

Right then, it was Ross helping Belle as he collected more supplies from Brendam Docks. He didn't usually pull trucks, and he was grateful that it was a small job.

The trucks were soon being unloaded at the Rescue Centre when the alarm bell suddenly went off. "Flynn, there's a fire down at the Wharf!" he called.

"But where's Belle?"

"She's stuck in Knapford Yard. This one's up to you. Take Belle's water tanker just in case."

Belle's water tanker was coupled behind Flynn's rail trailer. "I'm off to the rescue!" he called, but as he started to pull away…his engine coughed and black smoke billowed from his bonnet. "Oh no! what do we do now?!"

A Fireman looked back. "Ross, you'll have to push us to the scene!"

Ross was surprised. "I never fought a fire before, Sir."

"We will worry about the fire!" shouted Flynn. "You just have to get us there!"

Ross buffered up and puffed as quickly and steadily as he could. When they arrived, they saw that a warehouse was on fire. The Narrow-Gauge engines stood well back; they were worried.

"Never fear!" Flynn shouted. "Fiery Flynn to the rescue."

The Firemen quicky set to work as water flew into the flames. Ross was worried; it looked like Flynn was having trouble keeping the fire under control. "Is there anything else we can do?!" he asked his Driver.

"We could let them use your water!" he replied.

Ross was afraid of the fire, but he was more worried about the safety of his friends. "…Sir!" he called to the Fire Chief, "Use my water! Flynn needs all the help he can get!" The Firemen wasted no time. They ran long hoses into Ross' tanks and sent more water into the burning building.

It took a long time, but at last, the fire was out. Everyone cheered for Flynn, Ross and the Firemen.

"You were amazing!" shouted Peter Sam.

"A fine piece of work," added Skarloey.

"I don't think we could've done it without Ross," panted Flynn and everyone agreed.

Thomas arrived and shunted Ross to the water tower and the two engines helped Flynn back to the Rescue Centre. As they trundled along, they heard a familiar bell and whistle, and Belle raced by with a long line of coaches. "What is she doing?" Ross asked.

"When Belle heard you were helping Flynn with that fire," said Thomas, "she volunteered to take your local train for you."

"Well, one good turn deserves another," smiled Ross.

Thomas and Flynn could only agree.
