Prologue: The Story of the Seawings

The Kingdom of the Sea is a watery world where a species of dragons known as the Seawings thrive. Their gills allowed them to breath under the water while they were able to breath above it just as well. Their webbed talons and thick tails helped to propel them in the water as their wings were able to keep them in the air. While living under sea, they also had a few islands where they resided.

The Seawings ruled the oceanic waters of the Kingdom of the Sea with love and justice. And always leading the Seawings was a wise and kind queen. The queen would be tough but fair in her decisions. And while there would be a king every now and then, it was mostly a queen who would rule.

But the Seawings weren't without their share of conflicts in the world. While the Seawings tried to respect all other forms of life in respect for the circle, there were creatures known as Scavengers, beings that also dwelled on the islands of the Sea Kingdom. Though smaller in size and nature, the Scavengers of the seas were able to control the waters in order to survive, such as crossing the ocean and fighting against the great water dragons.

But it is said that a dragon of the sea would one day end the fighting. That when the day came for her to be queen, that joyous times would grace the oceans.

The sun had just set over the kingdom of the sea, but all was not quiet. A loud explosion echoed on one of the many islands in the Kingdom of the Sea. A full-scale battle was happening. A small squad of Seawings flew over a small section of the island before having to break off when a couple of water bending Scavengers sent a large bubble of water at them. They regrouped on the ground before turning and using their thick tails to kick a large wave of sand to disorient their foes. The Scavengers threw their arms up to shield themselves from the sand and quickly backed away when the Seawings tried to attack.

Multiple battles like this one was happening all over the island. But the biggest battle was happening on the North beach between a large battalion of Seawings and Scavengers. Leading the Seawings was Queen Coral, her husband Gill and her brother Shark. Queen Coral was a Seawing with beautiful and majestic scales, webbed talon prints underneath her wings and a twisted narwhal horn attached to the tip of her tail. King Gill, a large pea-green Seawing with golden bands on his ankles. Her brother Shark, a dull gray-green scaled Seawing, had a knobby, protruding forehead and horns that twisted towards one another. Like his sister, he had webbed dragon prints across his wings. All three were wearing regal Seawing armor while the soldiers behind them were wearing standard Seawing armor.

One of the soldiers behind the queen was a tough-looking and beautiful Seawing with dark green scales. The daughter of Queen Coral stood with her brothers and a few other soldiers as they charged towards the Scavengers. The little creatures brought a large stream of water from the ocean before hurling towards the Seawings. Thankfully with their armor, the Seawings were able to brace themselves from the attack. While Queen Coral and the royal family were distracting the Scavengers in front of them, a small squad of came around from behind and was able to knock the Scavengers down with a slash of their claws.

The attack stopped when the Scavengers fell and the Seawings were able to move again. Gill looked to his beloved and said, "The Scavengers are really fighting for this island, my Queen."

"They're trying to take our territory." Shark snarled at the thought. Queen Coral shook her head, "They've been trying to take our territories since the Scorching. The Scavengers have no respect for the lives they take nor respect the balance of the Circle."

"We need to push them back." Shark told her. Queen Coral nodded and said, "We know that they've taken hold of the fortress up on the mountain." She quickly thought of something and said, "We know that they don't have a lot of water to draw upon there."

"Should we round up any battalions?" Princess Orca asked her mother. Coral looked to her daughter and said, "Round up as many as we can. We plan to attack soon."

"Yes, your majesty." Shark said before taking a few soldiers to do as their queen commanded. But Queen Coral was quick to stop, "Gill, Orca, Shark, a moment please."

All three of her family stopped to see what was needed while the others went on their way. The three walked up to her and Coral said, "I know that this war has taken a lot out of us, but know that when it ends, I'm glad to have had you standing by me all this time."

"And we'll always stand by you." Gill promised. Coral had an unsure look when she said, "I guess what I'm saying is, please be careful."

Her brother, her husband and her daughter all nodded before Orca said, "And you as well, your Majesty."

"Orca." Queen Coral playfully smirked. Shark cleared his throat and said, "Not to seem too impatient, but we do have a raid to get ready for."

"Right." Queen Coral nodded and the four took off to catch up to the other Seawings.

One hour later…

Queen Coral, King Gill and Captain Shark all stood before a large battalion of Seawings on a mountain next to the Scavenger's fortress. Knowing that it wasn't going to be easy, Queen Coral felt like she needed to give her people some encouragement. Looking amongst them she said to them, "My fellow Seawings! I know that this war has taken a toll on all of us. We've lost many of our friends and family to the Scavengers. They tried to force us from the Kingdom of the Sea countless times since the Scorching, but we were able to hold them back.

"But tonight we're going to force them from our territories once and for all!" She shouted and it caused a lot of the Seawings to agree with her. Queen Coral held confidence in her voice as she said, "Once we take their fortress and drive them out, the Scavengers will no longer bother us!"

Another round of roars and raised talons shot up into the air. She then said, "Group A will accompany me to lay siege to the front gate while Group B goes with Shark to cut off the Scavenger's water supply. Gill will lead Group C to sneak around from the back to catch the Scavengers off guard."

The soldiers all nodded in agreement. Queen Coral looked to the leaders of the other two groups and said, "Give me a few minutes to get them distracted."

"At once." Shark nodded before gathering his group and taking off. Gill took his wife's talons into hers and said, "Be careful out there."

"And you as well." Coral said before rounding up their daughter for her team.

Queen Coral's group, consisting of her, Orca and about twenty other Seawings, all gathered on the mountain's ledge before opening up their wings. Queen Coral jumped off the side of the mountain before flying through the air. The rest of her soldiers were quick to follow after her and headed right for the Scavenger's fortress.

On the walls of the fortress, a couple of the Scavengers stood keeping a look out when they noticed multiple creatures flying towards them. When they could see what they were, they looked back and both shouted, "The sea dragons are coming!"

The entire fortress was turned into an uproar as they prepared what weaponry that they had. From in the air, Queen Coral noticed the Scavengers preparing for them. Glancing back she said, "Brace yourselves, everyone! Just because we know what they're throwing at us, doesn't mean we shouldn't be prepared for it!"

"Aye, Queen Coral!" A few dragons shouted back. They had to quickly break formation when a large spear came flying at them. They rejoined again when they landed before the gates. The Seawing soldiers who held spears in their talons threw them forward.

The Scavengers ducked down as the narwhal spears either flew over their heads or crashed into the walls of the fortress. Queen Coral motioned with her left wing for her squad to attack. Three of the Seawing soldiers rushed forward and slammed their shoulders against the large wooden gates of the fortress. The wood splintered from their combined force. Queen Coral ordered, "Give them some cover!"

"As you wish, your Majesty!" Some of the other soldiers complied and grabbed what they could find. Rocks, large branches and narwhal spears were hurled towards the fortress in attempts to keep the Scavengers from attacking their comrades trying to break down the gate.

As she watched from behind, Queen Coral could only hope that Shark and Gill's groups could pull their missions off.

High above the fortress along the mountains, Shark was leading his group along the river that led to the fortress. They soon came to where a spring fed the river and went down the river before continuing to the fortress. Shark ordered, "Hurry and bring down some of the loose boulders and bring down some trees! We need all we can and fast!"

"Yes, Commander Shark!" One of the Seawing soldiers nodded as they all moved to carry out the plan.

The Seawings lifted up rocks and uprooted the tress before placing them in the river not far from the spring. With each stone and twig added, the water ways started to stop flowing. When the entire river had been blocked, only a trickle of water came from the dam. Shark moved over to the waterfall to see that it stopped falling. When the river below also started to recede, he looked to his comrades and nodded, "Mission accomplished."

The Seawings started to cheer before Shark motioned with his head, "Let's meet up with the others!"

Everyone there opened up their wings and took flight to get back to the battle.

Meanwhile, Gill was leading his group through a forest to a back door. Though not as heavily guarded because of the front gate assault, there were still a few Scavengers guarding the entrance. Gill looked to one side before nodding before doing the other. The Seawings moved out to get the attention of the Scavengers.

Some of the Seawing soldiers launched large rocks at the gates and the Scavengers tried to defend themselves by using the water they had to cause the rocks to divert them. But as more and more rocks came at them, Gill lead a few soldiers and rammed into the gate. Because the gate was much smaller, they found that it was made of less sturdy wood as well. After ramming into the wooden gates once more, both the large doors and some bricks fell. Gill and the Seawings yelped as they fell to the ground. Some of the Scavengers moved to attack them, but a spear or two caused them stop in the tracks as the rest of Gill's group flooded through the back gate.

Back with Queen Coral's group, the front gate was about to come down. Queen Coral looked to Orca and a few others and said, "Help them bring the door down!"

Orca and the others nodded before rushing forward. The soldiers saw their comrades coming forward before they all rushed forward. When they rammed into the gate, they were able to smash through the gate. The Scavengers prepared to defend themselves as they created a shield in front of themselves with the waters from a few nearby wells. One of the Scavengers quickly noticed something was off when he said, "Something's wrong with the flow of the water."

"What?" Another Scavenger questioned as more Scavengers ran up to them. One of the new comers shouted, "We've been over run at the back!"

"No! No!" A fourth Scavenger cried out. The second raised a fist and said, "Then let us fight to escape!"

The Scavengers used what they had to stand their ground. They created a large spiral of water and flung it at the Seawings. Queen Coral and the others had to dodge to the attack. The water attack crashed into the walls and some of the Seawing soldiers went on the attack. When rushed towards a Scavenger and used their tail to knock them away. Queen Coral saw Gill's group rushing down the courtyard before seeing something flying towards them. A small grin formed on her face when she saw her brother and his group returning. Deciding to quickly end this battle she commanded, "Seawings! Let us finish this!"

The soldiers roared in agreement as they converged on the cornered Scavengers. The Scavengers once again formed their previous attack and launched it at the nearest Seawings. Most of the Seawings were able to get out of the way, except for one. But before the attack could even touch the soldier, Orca quickly moved in front and the attack impaled her through her chest. Queen Coral cried out in shock, sadness and anger from the attack on her daughter. With a maddening cry she rushed towards the Scavengers that harmed Orca. She swatted one away before impaling another with the narwhal horn on her tail. The other Seawings went to attack the remaining Scavengers while Coral rushed over to Orca.

The sounds of fighting went around Coral as she carefully raised her daughter's head from the ground. Orca weakly looked to her mother and said, "M-Mother."

"It's okay. It's okay." Coral said, tears welling up in her eyes. Gill rushed up next to them and looked down to his daughter with a sorrowful expression. Tears were flowing from Orca's eyes when she said, "I'm sorry."

"No, no." Gill shook his head. With a sob in her voice Coral said, "You have nothing to be sorry for, my dear."

Orca gave one last smile before she closed her eyes forever. When she saw that her daughter wasn't breathing anymore, Queen Coral threw her head back and roared in sorrow and anguish.

Three days later…

On another island not too far from the Seawing Palaces, the surviving Seawings had laid their fallen comrades from the war to rest. They had called upon their shaman Shell to tend to the wounds and pray over the dead. While most stood amongst the graves, Queen Coral stood at the top of a building as she was staring out into the sea. She had been crying the entire three days after the battle. Though she heard the sound of flapping wings, she didn't turn to look back to see Gill landing on the roof. He walked up to her and gently wrapped a wing around her. She still didn't look to him when she shook her head, "She shouldn't have died. None of them should."

"I know that it isn't fair, my love." Gill agreed with her. She finally turned to her husband and pressed her head against his neck. Gill then said, "We're all saddened by not just her death, but all the Seawings that we lost during the war.

"But you know how she was when she was younger." Gill said, a smile starting to form on her face. He chuckled when he remembered, "Always wanting to make sure that everyone was smiling." He lifted her chin with a talon and said, "That's what she would want us to do."

"I know." Coral nodded and looked him in the eye. She then said, "I was hoping that she would become queen after me. Just how my mother wanted for me."

"Well, perhaps one of the boys could make a great leader." Gill suggested. Queen Coral sighed and said, "I was actually hoping that it would be a queen. Even if it was one last time."

"Then maybe our sons will understand." Gill said, hoping that their sons would understand their mother's wishes. Gill then said, "Perhaps if and when we have another daughter, then she will become queen when she is ready."

"And she will always be loved. Just like all of our other children." Queen Coral promised. Gill nodded in agreement. But unbeknownst to them, Shark was watching from below the roof and his eyes narrowed.

Author's Note: I'm not entirely sure if Shark would do that, but he is the one who wouldn't really be too keen about Tsunami all that much. However, I hold no ill will towards him or Orca. And it makes me really wonder if things had been different between Orca and Coral if the former hadn't challenged her mom. And as for the Scavengers, yeah, they're basically Waterbenders. As for getting to main story, I have other stories that need work on. So it might be a while before I get back to this one. I look forward to reading your reviews. Be sure to leave a comment either about if I've done something wrong or if you want something specifically to happen. See you next time.
