Chapter 3 - When Our Paths Crossed

Father

"Father, Will you please explain what's going on and where's Envy." Lust sighed. "Greed won't shut up about him and neither with Wrath.." her long black hair flowed with her head as she moved. Father looked at her and the other homunculi.

"We'll have to wait and see." He took a sip of his crimson drink and sighed.

"Soon, soon enough we will be able to achieve our goal."

"What about those two pesky brothers?" Lust added. "They might make it hard. Do I need to do anything?"

"Hm...no." Father began. "I have a special place for them.."

Luke and Flora

"Man, that cake was so good!" Luke said to Flora after walking out of the cake shop.

"Yeah, it was...let's see what else Charles circled for us!" Flora unfurled the map. "Hm, a local library."

"A library? What's so interesting about a library? Maybe it was for the professor?" Luke looked around for a library.

"There it is!" Flora pointed to a large brick building. "The Helènè Library!" Luke and Flora dashed towards the large building.

"Wow, it's huge!" Luke gasped, looking up at the large brick building.

"I've heard from the locals that Barcrombe has a great selection on ancient history and sciences like alchemy!" Flora pushed open the doors.

"What's alchemy?" Luke asked.

"Not sure." Flora answered, walking inside.

The library was huge! Full of so many books, Flora and Luke barely knew where to start. "Let's go over here!" Flora ran over to the section titled: Ancient Sciences.

"Wait for me!" Luke called, quickly catching up with her. "What's over here?" He skidded to a stop behind Flora.

"Alchemy books! I wonder if it holds anything pertaining to the mystery at hand." Flora looked and grabbed a large pink book from off the shelves.

Pink?" Luke raised an eyebrow. "That's an odd color for an Alchemy book.." Flora slammed the book down on the table and opened it. The first page had the following words printed on it:

Alchemy for Beginners | An Ancient Science Discovered

Helènè Juliet Abreo

1844

Please be careful as Alchemy is a dangerous yet fruitful science to those who apply to correct.

If not, you may perish with everything you loved, destroyed.

This is your first of many warnings.

"Helènè...isn't that the person who this library is named after?" Luke looked up at Flora.

"Yeah? I wonder why...?" They two of them skimmed through pages for hours and soon enough, it was 6:00 at night.

"I think it's time for us to go home..." Luke yawned.

"I agree!" Flora picked up the book and put it back on the shelf. "Alright let's head home." Luke nodded and the two left the building but before they could even make a step towards home, they saw something sparkle.

"D-Did you see that?" Luke whispered.

"Yes...was that?" Flora began to run and Luke followed after.

"The armor?!" They said as the skidded at the corner.

"Somebody must be wearing it!" Flora caught another glint of the armor.

"C'mon, let's go!" the two of them began to chase after the armor but they didn't know what would happen next.

Layton and Charles

"Charles, why did you bring me back here?" he looked around the small room. Charles pulled on a silver chain and turned on the light, which flickered on and off frequently.

"Because, I don't think the children can handle this..." His dark circles under his eyes became more apparent in the dim room and his recently combed hair began to tangle once again. "It has to do with alchemy, I'm sure you've heard of it?"

Layton nodded his head. "Yes I believe so, it's an ancient science correct?" Charles walked towards a large bookshelf in the back and took a couple of books off of it.

"You are correct." Charles set the books down on a small ottoman. "Many civilizations have used it. Such as the early Azran people, people in the middle ages and others." He opened the book and turned the pages. "But I fear that our world as we know will crumble once again." He set down the book with a page open on transmutations.

"Transmutations...The Azran...Alchemy..? How does this relate to Barcrombe?" Layton looked up as Charles opened a second book.

"Everything Layton. Everything." The next book he laid out had the page about transmutations, but not any transmutations: Human Transmutation.

"Human transmutation..." Layton read the page title aloud.

"The greatest sin in Alchemy." Charles shook his head. "You can't bring someone back from the dead with alchemy, it just doesn't work." He rubbed his temples.

"But Charles-" Layton was interrupted by Charles once more. "Human transmutation." he stood up. "Can open a gate, to the other side."
