Chapter 8 the wolf of the wind with the heart of a bear
faolan awoke with a start this was not the cave he had shared with his second milk giver thunder heart he must have wandered off from the cave they shared and wound upon this strange new area the land was mostly flat with tufted plants and when he faolan looked around he noticed that the plants had solid stems and he saw creatures that looked like walking clouds inside barricades made of fallen trees that had been stripped of their own bark and leaves and as he walked closer to the strange creature's he had to be cautious because of his splayed front paw which if you ask him was the reason he was abandoned by his first milk giver but it lead to his second milk giver thunder heart finding him and nursing him even though he was a wolf and she was a bear they were a loving family and she even taught him to speak bear which always surprised the other wolves whenever he came across them and as he got close to the walking clouds he saw what looked like two small wolves leading The walking clouds into a pen made from the fallen trees one of the small wolves had long legs with golden and white sleek fur a long snout and a narrow head the other had thick and long black and white fur with a black pointed ears a long black and white snout and a huge fluffy tail faolan broke out into a run to see if these small wolves needed his help dealing with the walking clouds but the moment faolan jumped over the fallen trees the long legged golden wolf who faolan could Now see was a female knocked him to the ground and what surprised him the most was that she had yellow eyes where other wolves he had seen had always had green eyes and before he could start speaking to explain himself the golden she wolf snarled why are you here on my masters farm if you're here for the flocks of sheep because if you are you will have to get through me my mate and our master before you can touch any of the sheep that have been entrusted into our care which confused faolan greatly what was a flock and why were these small wolves entrusted with their care and was this master the golden she wolf kept referring to but before he could ask any questions the male small wolf came back leading a strange creature which looked like the others that that faolan had heard the other wolves speak about now he new he wasn't home anymore it wore pelts all over its body which from what faolan could see had no fur except for the top of its head and it had what looked like a stick of silver in its hand and a brown pelt on top of its head then the small she wolf said this is your last chance either run or my master will kill you and make you into a rug for the basement of his den and with that faolan ran as fast as his legs would carry him he didn't know what a rug was but he most certainly didn't want to become one he kept running until he came across a creature he had never seen before it looked like a mountain lion cub which confused faolan greatly because he had never seen a mountain lion cub without its mother before and as he got close to it he could obviously tell it was a adult of its species it was a male with smoky gray fur almost black fur with blue eyes and as faolan got within talking distance of the strange creature it launched itself at him with claws that looked much sharper than than his own but then faolan easily hit him to the ground with one paw and then he asked the strange creature why did you attack me to which the creature answered with I thought you were a intruder or a threat on my clan's territory and I have to protect them From all intruders to which faolan answered with listen strange creature I'm sorry for intruding on your land but I was chased on it by the creature with the silver stick to which the little creature who called himself a cat explained that the creature was called a two leg and then he asked faolan why did the two leg chase don't they like dogs and then faolan asked what a dog was and then the cat described the small wolves that faolan had encountered at the flock storage place to which faolan answered I am a wolf not a dog and my name is faolan to which the small creature then introduced himself as crow feather and offered faolan a place to stay if he needed one to which the wolf greatly accepted and when the pair got to the place where crow feather and his clan lived it was a shallow scoop in the ground of the area they were in it didn't have any plants or bushes growing to defend themselves except for some gorse bushes that when faolan looked closely he saw what must have been crow feathers clan which he called wind clan and then crow feather went under one of the gorse bushes and a new cat came out of the bushes this cat was small and lean with a pale brown fur coat with amber eyes and a scar behind one ear and the new cat who was a male introduced himself as one whisker the uncle of crow feather welcomed to wind clan on the one condition that he would help the clan by protecting them from their enemies which mainly was just other cats to which faolan thought sounded better than being alone without any shelter and at least he had other bodies to sleep with for warmth than one whisker lead faolan over to the edge of the camp where there was a cave big enough for faolan and up to forty cats along with enough bones for him to naw on for the rest of his life to which he set right to work nawing on bones to record his story on of everything that came to him like it was written into his very soul itself and one whisker explained that our morning patrol found this cave this morning and our medicine cat bark face already wanted to use it as his den where he treats other cats that is if you don't mind sharing it faolan to which the male wolf began to wag his tail and showed the cats the bone he was chewing and it surprised the cats because of how the bone had perfect holes in it like it was telling a story to them and one whisker asked faolan if could could do this for all of the stories of wind clan to which faolan happily agreed to because he would love to help preserve the clans stories and with all the bones in the cave it would be a perfect use for them certainly better than whatever use the original creature that put them here would have used them for and then one whisker quickly left to go and fetch the cat that faolan had agreed to share this cave with and then what looked like two other cats came down from the mountain that the cave was on the bottom of one was a muscular long haired dark gray male with amber eyes and a broad head and shoulders and the fur was thick and sleek the other was a lithe brown female with sleek and thick fur with gray eyes and a torn ear crow feather stared at them with his mouth agape who ever these strange cats were faolan could guess that crow feather and all of wind clan knew them and apparently crow feather got over his shock because he said storm fur what are doing here with that tribe cat to which storm fur who was the male answered with that tribe cat has a name she is brook where small fish swim and me and her are mates the only reason why we are here is because the tribe exiled us because of some rule we couldn't understand about tribe cats not being able to have a mate from outside the cave of rushing water which surprised crow feather who responded with that sounds horrible well I will talk to one whisker and see if we can let you two join wind clan if you two accept storm fur and brook to which storm fur respond he would gladly join wind clan rather than go back to river clan and beg leopard star for a place in river clan where I was treated like a abomination just because of who my parents were and then her doing nothing when tiger claw tried to kill me and my sister feather tail and I've got nothing to return for since my father was abducted by two legs and both my mother and sister are in star clan and as storm fur ended his story one whisker came into the cave with a new cat faolan had not met he was a dark brown male with a short tail faolan guessed he was bark face wind clan's medicine cat and his new den mate because he was carrying a large pile of roots leaves and berries and seeds with him and one whisker agreed with crow feathers idea of making Storm fur and brook join the clan if brook wouldn't mind becoming bark faces apprentice to which brook happily accepted and all of a sudden a new cat appeared out of nowhere the new cat was a male with wiry mottled brown fur and amber eyes and he all of a sudden launched himself at one whisker and storm fur and faolan quickly slammed the new male cat to the ground with a paw and one star started asking him questions he began by saying mud claw what were you thinking attacking me and our newest clan mate to which mud claw answered with if I were wind clans leader as was my right by deputy we would not be having any of the problems we are having now with you as leader and we don't even know if tall star even made you deputy before he died all we have to go on is the word of two thunder clan cats and yourself and bark face who was your friend when he appointed you how do we know bark face wasn't lying to help his friend one whisker I say you make this dog let me up so I can test to see for myself if star clan chose you over me to which one whisker asked is that what it take to settle this argument once and for all to which mud claw said yes it would I will even leave wind clan territory and never come back to which one whisker asked faolan to let mud claw up and the moment faloan let his paw off mud claw he went straight for one whiskers throat and bit through it killing him but then just as one whiskers body was hitting the ground nine balls of light came down and circled around one whiskers body and one whisker opened his eyes again and he rose to his paws and said to mud claw was that enough proof that I am meant to be wind clans leader to which mud claw answered with this isn't the last you've heard of me I will be back to take my rightful place as wind clans leader no matter what it takes even if I have to kill all of wind clan and start from scratch with rouges and loners to which crow feather started chasing mud claw away with storm fur right behind both of them and then one whisker who bark face started calling one star let out a sigh and said not the way I thought I would be proven to be wind clans leader but that's my first problem dealt with to which brook answered with good riddance to bad rubbish as the two legs say but faloan didn't believe mud claw was done causing problems for wind clan just yet and he did say he was willing to kill all of the clan to get to be leader of wind clan from one star and he bark face and brook fell asleep cuddled up together on the cave floor and as faloan slept he had a dream of being in a wide open clearing with four trees and the sky full of stars and as faloan looked up at the stars they started coming down from the sky and as the stars got closer to the ground they started to take the form of cats and faloan guessed he was in star clan the place where one star's nine lives came from one of the cats started speaking it was a male who was black and white with amber eyes and a long tail and then the new cat said greetings I am tall star the previous leader of wind clan before we came by the lake territories even though I died shortly after we got here I could sense mud claw was ambitious for power and I wish I had never made him deputy which is why I made one whisker my deputy my deputy with my last breath because I knew he would be the best leader of wind clan in my stead would you please deliver a message for to him for me to which faolan answered with yes I will and then tall star said we all make mistakes when we are young we can not let our past define us we must let our actions in the here and now determine how we are seen and tell him that we know about smoke and that the rule of medicine cats not having mates and kits have been changed and just as suddenly as he finished speaking tall star he and the other star clan cats disappeared and faloan awoke to to his new den mates beside him and what looked like storm fur headed towards them with a rabbit in his jaws which he dropped outside of the entrance and went straight for brook and started licking her fur coat with rapid stokes of his tongue and before faolan could ask what he was doing bark face answered with he is washing her that's how we cats keep our fur coats the way they are I could do it for you if you like as well but you have to do it to me as well to which faolan agreed to clean bark face and let him get cleaned by the senior medicine cat and as bark face started he could tell the clear difference between storm fur and bark face where storm fur licking was and sloppy leaving his mates fur sticking up in places bark faces slow and rhythmic licking almost put faolan to sleep with how good it was making him feel and as bark face finished up licking his fur bark face asked faolan if he liked it to which the wolf answered with yes I did you almost put me back to sleep and bark face answered then I will do that for you every night and then they noticed a new cat approaching them and it looked like the new cat had another rabbit in its jaws as well the new cat was a muscular black she cat with blue eyes as the new cat entered the cave mouth she spat out the rabbit and said you could have waited for me storm fur to which storm fur responded with maybe you need to learn to run faster rather than trying to hit on crow feather night cloud to which the new she cat named night cloud responded you might have a point there fish for brains to which storm fur answered with alright I'll wait for you from now on night cloud so that was new cats name and faolan introduced himself to the new she cat who answered with I actually already heard about you from crow feather who told me you prevented mud claw from killing both one star and storm fur last night now I have one question for you is that true to which faolan answered yes I did I noticed him jump at the two and I stopped him by slamming my paws on his back to keep him from moving while one star questioned him to which night cloud asked where mud claw was now and faolan answered with actually storm for would be better to ask that question than me last I saw of mud claw storm fur and crow feather were chasing him off of wind clan territory after he took one stars first life and threatened the whole of wind clan and said he would kill everyone and restart wind clan with something called rouges if he had to why didn't you tell me this storm fur who responded with I thought it was better for crow feather to tell you since mud claw was his mentor to which night cloud responded with all the more reason for me to know so I could rip his throat out and give it to crow feather as a gift to make him love me and storm fur relented and said we chased him to the lake before we lost him and had to come back here well at least no one was seriously injured and I'm sure crow feather is glad to have you back you stupid fur ball night cloud spoke to storm fur we already lost one member of the great journeying cats to some beast called sharp claw don't remind me said brook with a shudder and faolan would have to remember to ask one of them from the story because just from the title of if faolan could tell it was very exciting and worth being preserved on a bone so no one forgot the the courage or heart of the cats that helped the clans find a new home after the two legs destroyed the old home they had in a forest for supposedly no reason except to make the thunder path that ran through the forest wider and not only did the two legs destroy the forest they also poisoned all of the rabbits which were wind clans main source of food but they also dug up the moor land they used to live on and diverted the stream that ran through it so wind clan had no water in their territory to drink from but then they also started using their monsters to knock down all the trees in the forest as well and whenever they came across a clan cat they would lock them inside something called a cage and loaded them up to take to star clan knows where which is apparently what happened to storm furs father then the two legs found a way to divert the main source of water for all four clans and one dependent on it for food and shelter which is why the four clans had to leave in the first place and just as faloan was picking a bone to start nawing on so could write the story on two new cats he had never seen before came up to the cave entrance one was a little scrawny black Tom the other was a small lithe brown Tom with one black ear a scar across his back and throat and amber eyes and leading them was traitor mud claw who said well looks like I get my first chance for revenge on that mange pelt said storm fur and faolan wanted to personally rip out the throats of the two new cats because he could tell just by look at them that they were evil just like mud claw and when their new opponents got close to the cave faloan night cloud and storm came out to meet them and once they were in striking distance they asked the two intruders what their names were and the scrawny black Tom said my name is hound leap and my partner over her as he pointed to the brown Tom but before he could tell them the brown Tom's name the brown Tom hit hound leap in the shoulder and said my name is ant pelt and of course you can't forget about me said mud claw to which night cloud said of course how could we forget the fox heart that used to be our deputy and then she leapt for mud claw only for the traitor to stick out his paw and trip up the she cat and quickly put a paw on her wind pipe just as easy to anger as ever I thought I made sure your mentor trained you to look before you leap but it looks like you need a refresher course said mud claw only for faloan to throw hound Leap who thought he take faloan on one on one into the side of mud claw as well as throwing mud claw off of night cloud it also gave storm fur the chance to throw ant pelt on top of his two companions but then mud claw lifted himself and his two companions and said did you really think this was the best I could do i was just saving my true secret weapon for later but desperate times call for desperate measures and then he yelled with all of his voice fierce dogs attack and as he finished his shout what sounded like a pack of dogs barking sounded close to their location and as the sound got louder the pack revealed themselves to be at 15 dogs in size fourteen of the dogs were a mixture of black and tan fur but the last one looked even more like a wolf than any dog faloan had ever seen before with gray and white fur with yellow eyes the wolf like one must have been the newest member because the others all had synchronized movements that came from being in a pack and they obviously knew what they were doing because there was no way a normal pack of wolves or dogs could be this ruthless and as faloan pinned the wolf like dog down he questioned him on who he was and what he and his pack were doing here and the wolf dog answered with what use is a name to a dead wolf to which faolan answered with then I guess you're name is omega since that's obviously your rank in this pack now what are the names of your other pack members to which the newly guessed omega started listing names and they went as followed blade mace dagger pistol brute ripper revolver axe scythe bludgeon musket cannon lance arrow bullet and lastly fang and then all of sudden there was a shout from on top of a hill the shout came from one star and it was wind clan attack and then forty cats came into the field of battle and chased off all of the dogs and the traitorous cats off their land after the battle faolan noticed that some of the cats he had never seen before and didn't smell like wind clan coming up to him one was a white female with bright green eyes and short fur another was a female with brown fur and yellow eyes and another one was a gray Tom with golden eyes and a torn ear tip and the last one was a dark gay female with amber eyes the first to introduce themselves was the female with brown fur who introduced herself as wind star the first leader of wind clan next was the white she cat who introduced herself as the first medicine cat moth flight the next was the one male who introduced himself as gray wing one of the cats who initially left their home in mountains to settle in the forest home of the clans and lastly the dark gray female introduced herself as slate the true mate of gray wing and then wind star and moth flight introduced themselves as mother and daughter and then wind star began grooming moth flights fur and said you always needed help with your ears dear and then moth wing began describing faolan which was a surprise to faolan since he had never been described by another creature before and from how moth wing was describing him not a single cat there had ever heard no one had seen a creature like him before he had silvery gray fur with streaks of white and black in it and he looked bigger and heavier than any dog or fox they had seen before which was a shock to every cat in the clan since they assumed that their ancestors would have seen every type of creature that could live on the moor land where they used to live and faloan asked crow feather what moth flight was doing describing him and crow feather explained that it was part of wind clans apprentice training they used to have to sit on a rock and point out whatever they could see from it which sounded like a interesting form of training to the wolf and then crow feather explained to faolan that they also used to dig tunnels around their original home to hunt during a time called leaf bare and also for a way to escape if the other clans decided to attack them but there haven't been a tunneling cat since the last leader before tall star heather star decided the tunnels were too dangerous and had them sealed off which didn't make any sense to Faloan himself it sounded like this heather star just had a problem with the tunnels and apparently apparently wind started and slate agreed with him since they started gathering all of the sturdy and muscular cats they could and showing them the proper way to scoop out dirt so it pilled up nice and compact rather than fall back into the hole and when faloan asked gray wing why he wasn't trying to help he explained that he had breathing problems in the old forest and never felt safe under ground and only now was faloan noticing that brook was staring at gray wing with a look of pure amazement and when she spoke she said all of this time I and the rest of the tribe of rushing water thought you and your companions that followed the sun trail were just a story that our elders used to tell kits before we went to sleep to which gray wing responded with you come from the tribe of rushing water and brook answered with yes I did but they banished me and my mate storm fur for deciding to be mates which drew in the attention of moth flight who said well this makes thing interesting the main reason why the code against medicine cats having kits was made was because no cat in the former wind clan helped me raise my kittens but since you have bark face and storm fur to help you I think we can mark a amendment to the rules which faolan thought was terrific Change which will only make the clan better for it and then the whole of wind clan fell asleep ready for what ever challenges might lie ahead of and with both mud claw and his rouges as well as blade and her fierce dog pack they would need all the sleep they can get.
