A/N: This the second and final chapter covering Jason's suspension. Johnny takes Jason to Coyote Creek and Jason goes on a date to the roller rink with Claire. Which means that Tory will be making a brief cameo appearance.
Disclaimer: I don't own the Karate Kid movies, Cobra Kai or anything else that I might reference.
Coyote Creek
Jason woke up and got dressed.
He grabbed his wallet, phone and keys before walking downstairs.
Jason didn't have long to wait before he heard a knock on the door.
He went to open the door and saw Sensei standing outside it.
"Good morning, Kreese. Are you ready for Coyote Creek?" Sensei asks.
Jason nods. "Yes, Sensei."
"Good. Because we'll be heading there after we get something to eat." Sensei replies.
Jason smiles. "Fantastic."
"I was thinking it would be a good idea to have lunch somewhere after training today. Like Chili's. And I'm buying, so feel free to order anything you like." Sensei says.
Jason's smile grows wider. "That sounds good."
"Enough chit-chat, Kreese. Let's go." Sensei turns around and walks over to the Pontiac Firebird.
Jason steps outside and closes the door behind him.
He follows Sensei to where the Pontiac Firebird is parked.
Jason gets into the passenger's seat while Sensei gets into the driver's seat.
Sensei starts the car and turns on the radio before driving off.
Jason wondered what Coyote Creek was going to be like.
And, he'd be lying if he said that he wasn't looking forward to seeing Coyote Creek.
….
Sensei parks outside a diner and they walk inside.
A waitress shows them to a booth and they walk over to it before sitting down.
"You've been doing a hell of a job the last two weeks. I put you through hell and you got through it. And I'm proud of you. But…." Sensei starts.
Jason interrupts. "You still haven't shown me Coyote Creek? Or is this about my training?"
"I'm getting to that, Kreese. If you want to really improve beyond the level you're improving at now, you really have to work for it. There aren't any shortcuts." Sensei answers.
Jason understands. "Right. So, you think I can become even better?"
"Exactly. You and Diaz could be better than I was when I was your age. And I'm not just saying that." Sensei replies.
Jason isn't sure what to say. "Thanks, Sensei."
"Don't mention it." Sensei says.
A waitress comes over to take their order and they tell her what they want.
They keep talking until their food arrives.
….
Jason pays for their breakfast and they leave the diner.
They walk back over to Sensei's Pontiac Firebird.
Sensei unlocks the car and gets into the driver's seat while Jason gets into the passenger's seat.
The drive to Coyote Creek goes by quicker because Sensei turns the radio on.
Sensei finds somewhere to park the Pontiac Firebird.
Jason watches as Sensei gets out of the car before following him.
"Welcome to Coyote Creek, Kreese." Sensei announces.
Jason looks around. "Wow. It's different to what I thought it was going to be."
"That's because you've probably never been this close to nature before." Sensei retorts.
Jason thinks about it. "Yeah."
They continue walking for a little bit before stopping.
"Your grandfather used to take us here a lot back in the day. We'd split into two teams and try to take the headbands of everybody on the other team. It got pretty chaotic sometimes, but that was to be expected. We weren't in the dojo." Sensei is reminiscing a little.
Jason looks a little confused. "There was a different dojo?"
"Yeah. The old dojo. Your grandfather shut it down because we all left after the All-Valley in '84. The one I lost." Sensei answers.
Jason looks at Sensei with a pensive expression on his face. "So, how did you lose at the All-Valley, Sensei? It's probably a pretty long story, right?"
"It's a long story." Sensei replies.
Jason nods. "Cool. I don't mind hearing it."
"Alright. I won my second All-Valley in '83. And things were going pretty great. Until I broke up with my girlfriend, Ali Mills in the summer of '84." Sensei starts.
They walk into the woods while being mindful of where Sensei had parked.
Jason takes in the view of the woods while also listening to Sensei's story. "So, what happened next?"
"I tried to have a conversation with Ali, but I got interrupted by someone who I later learned was called Daniel LaRusso. We got into a fight and I won. But that wasn't the end of it." Sensei continues.
Jason looks at Sensei. "So, what was the end of it?"
"I'm getting to that, Kreese. I was trying to leave well enough alone until he sprayed me with a water hose. Me and the other Cobras were going to go and teach him a lesson when we got into a fight with this old martial arts master guy. He kicked all our asses. And then, they went to the dojo and they decided to settle things at the All-Valley. Your grandfather agreed to it, too. LaRusso manages to make it to the finals. He beats me with a kick to the face." Sensei continues telling the story.
Jason interrupts. "And what happens next? Because that's probably not the whole story."
"You're right, Kreese. There is more to the story. Your grandfather snapped my runner up trophy in half and tried to choke me to death after the tournament because I lost. LaRusso's Sensei managed to stop him and saved my life in the process. I'd probably be dead if it wasn't for him." Sensei says.
Jason lets out a deep breath. "Did you ever see my grandfather again?"
"No. We all quit after the tournament and never saw him again. The last thing any of us heard about him was that he died. And, no offence or anything, but I'm almost glad that he's dead." Sensei replies.
Jason has to resist the urge to tell Sensei that John Kreese is still very much alive.
But there is something else that's been bothering him. "Do I remind you of him? My grandfather, I mean?"
"You might be a Kreese, but you're nothing like him. And you don't have to compare yourself to him. Because you're your own person." Sensei is quick to reassure him.
Jason lets out a laugh. "That's a relief."
"You're a good leader, Kreese. Sure, Diaz might technically be my first student, but you're the one that everybody looks to. Just don't tell him I said that." Sensei has a big smile on his face, surprisingly.
Jason nods. "I won't. But he kind of knows that I'm the leader. Even if he's the heart of the team. And your first student."
"Exactly. Besides, we've been standing around here long enough. You want to head back to the car?" Sensei suggests.
It doesn't take long for Jason to respond. "Sure. I mean… Sure, Sensei."
"Alright." Sensei says.
Jason follows Sensei back to where the Pontiac Firebird was parked.
It seemed as though Sensei knew Coyote Creek like the back of his hand.
They walk back to where the Pontiac Firebird was parked and Sensei unlocks the car before getting into the driver's seat.
Jason gets into the passenger's seat.
Sensei starts the car and turns on the radio before driving off.
The drive from Coyote Creek back to the Valley doesn't take too long.
….
Sensei drives around until he finds a Chili's and parks in a parking space.
Jason watches as Sensei gets out of the Pontiac Firebird before getting out of the car himself.
They walk into the building and are able to get a table reasonably quickly.
Jason sits down on one side and Sensei sits down on the other side. They each have a menu in front of them.
"There's something I've been meaning to ask you. What exactly is your home situation like? Because I don't think you have parents or anything like that." Sensei remarks.
Jason shrugs. "Well, that's kind of a long story."
"We've got time, Kreese. And I'm not going to tell any of the others about it. At least not yet. So, try not to worry about it. Okay?" Sensei gives Jason as reassuring an expression as he can manage.
Jason scratches his head. "Alright. Well, I had a pretty normal childhood up until I was eight years old. Because that's when my dad got ten to twenty years for armed robbery along with aggravated assault and bodily harm. My mom basically abandoned me after that. And then I spent the next six years of my life bouncing around between different group homes. I got into the wrong crowds and ended up in juvie. I would have been in juvie for longer, but I got lucky. And then, a family friend said that he had an "Opportunity" for me."
"Which explains why you're living in a fancy house by yourself and driving a fancy car, right?" Sensei asks.
Jason nods. "Pretty much."
"It also explains why you're not short of funds." Sensei remarks.
Jason chuckles. "It kind of does."
"Are you two ready to order or do you need some more time to decide?" A waitress walks over to where they're sitting.
Jason looks at the waitress. "I think we're ready to order."
"Sure. I'll have a cheeseburger or something with fries. And a beer." Sensei interjects.
Jason looks at the menu. "I'll have the baby back ribs. And a coke."
"Okay, then. Someone will be right over with your drinks." The waitress takes their menus before walking away.
Someone walks over with their drinks a few minutes later.
Sensei pours his beer into a glass and Jason does the same with his Coke.
Jason has a question he wanted to ask Sensei. "Did you ever see my dad at all? When you were still in the old Cobra Kai, I mean?"
"Not really. Your grandfather was very good at keeping the different parts of his life separate from each other. And, I don't think he was really there for your dad, just based on what you told me earlier." Sensei answered.
Jason nods. "Exactly."
Sensei took a few sips of his beer before taking a long gulp of it.
"Hopefully you've learned something from your suspension and from the two weeks of extra training you did, Kreese." Sensei says.
Jason thinks about it. "I think I've learned a lot, Sensei."
"Good." Sensei takes another sip of his beer and eventually winds up finishing it.
Jason watches as Sensei asks a waitress for another beer.
He takes a sip of his Coke. "To be honest, I'm looking forward to my suspension being over."
"Why's that?" Sensei asks.
Jason shrugs. "Well, there's a few reasons. One reason is that I really miss my friends. And another reason is that it's kind of boring being stuck at home. Oh, and I'm even starting to miss school. Which isn't something I thought I'd ever say."
They talk until their food arrives.
Sensei pays for their meal when they've finally finished eating.
They walk out of the restaurant and back to Sensei's Pontiac Firebird.
Sensei unlocks the car and gets into the driver's seat before Jason gets into the passenger's seat.
Jason watches as Sensei turns on the radio before driving off.
There was still time to shower and get ready before his date with Claire.
….
Jason had time to shower and get changed after Sensei dropped him off at his house.
He gets his wallet, phone and keys from his room after he got changed.
Jason walks down the stairs and opens the door of the house before closing it and stepping outside.
He walks over to the Dodge Viper and unlocks the car before getting into it and starting it.
Jason turns on the radio before he drives off.
Even if it doesn't take too long to get from his house to Claire's house.
Jason parks the Dodge Viper in the drive way of Claire's house, noticing her blue Volkswagen Beetle and Bobby's car.
He gets out of the car and walks up to the door.
It only takes a knock or two before the door opens.
"Hey, Jason. Claire's going to be downstairs in a few minutes. Do you want to come in?" Bobby offers.
Jason nods. "That would be great."
"Johnny texted me earlier and he told me that he took you to Coyote Creek. I haven't been there in years and hearing about it kind of took me back. If that makes sense." Bobby closes the door behind them.
Jason understands what Bobby is trying to say. "I think it does make sense. Sensei talked about going to Coyote Creek to train as a teenager with the old dojo."
"Those were some good times. But I don't think you'd be able to get away with that kind of thing now. Letting two groups of teenagers basically fight each other with minimal adult supervision just seems like a bad idea. Even if it was just supposed to be a training exercise." Bobby walks through the hallway.
Jason follows him. "That must have been some training exercise."
"It really was. There are sodas in the fridge if you want one." Bobby says.
Jason nods. "I think I'll take a soda."
"Good. Violet is in the kitchen, by the way." Bobby adds.
Jason watches as Bobby goes into a different room before going into the kitchen.
He notices Violet in the kitchen while he goes to grab a soda.
Jason gives her a nod as a way of greeting. "Hi."
"Hello. I think Bobby told you that Claire will be downstairs in a few minutes. Feel free to make yourself at home, though." Violet has a smile on her face.
Jason opens the fridge and takes a can of soda. "Cool."
He watches as Violet leaves the kitchen before drinking his soda.
Jason puts the empty can in the trash and walks back into the hallway.
He looks up and sees Claire walking down the stairs.
"Jason! It's so good to see you! I mean, I saw you yesterday, but it's really good to see you!" Claire exclaims.
Jason watches as Claire makes it to the bottom of the stairs.
He smiles. "It's good to see you too, Claire."
"Sensei took you to Coyote Creek according to Dad. How did your bonding with Sensei go?" Claire asks.
Jason shrugs. "It went alright. He told me about the old Cobra Kai and losing the All Valley."
"Wow. Dad doesn't really talk about his time in the old Cobra Kai all that much. Even though he's still friends with Sensei, Uncle Jimmy, Uncle Tommy and Uncle Dutch… Even though he's in prison." Claire replies.
Jason looks a little confused. "How many uncles do you even have?"
"Well, they're all Dad's friends from the old Cobra Kai. Or, they're the people from the old Cobra Kai that Dad stayed friends with. I have one actual uncle, though." Claire answers.
And now it all makes sense.
Jason absorbs this information. "Oh. Well, shall we go? I haven't been to the roller rink before, so you'll kind of have to guide me there. If that's okay."
"I don't mind." Claire says.
Jason grins. "Fantastic. Shall we go?"
"Yeah. I'll just tell Mom and Dad that we're going." Claire responds.
Jason watches as Claire walks down the hallway.
It doesn't take long for her to tell Bobby and Violet where they're going, so she walked back down the hallway until she ends up standing in front of him.
Jason looks at her. "Let's go."
"Alright." Claire smiles.
Jason walks to the door and opens it, letting Claire walk out before he follows her and closes the door behind her.
They walk down to where Jason parked his Dodge Viper.
Jason unlocks the car and watches as Claire opens the door and gets in the passenger seat.
He opens the door and gets into the driver's seat before driving off.
Claire knows where the roller rink is, so she tells him where to go.
….
Jason parked the Dodge Viper and watched as Claire got out of the car before getting out of it himself.
They walked into the roller rink and paid for their roller skates.
Jason and Claire take off their shoes and put roller skates on before handing in their shoes.
They make their way over to where people are skating and walk, or skate, on it.
"I don't think you've done this before. But you're doing great." Claire says.
Jason smiles. "Thanks. I am picking it up pretty quickly. Which is good."
"Yeah." Claire replies.
Jason holds Claire's hand as they skate around.
He looks around at other people as they skate. "So, how long have you been roller skating for?"
"A few years, but it's not something I do a lot. Especially not since I joined Cobra Kai." Claire replies.
Jason understands. "That makes sense."
"Are you looking forward to Monday?" Claire asks.
Jason nods. "Yeah. It might sound funny, but I almost miss school."
"You're right. It does sound funny." Claire teases.
Jason laughs. "It does. I'd even say that I miss Kyler and Yasmine, but I'd be lying."
They skate around until they stop and get something to eat.
And that's when someone notices them and makes her way over to them just as they're about to order something.
"Jason? Is that you?" The girl asks.
Jason looks between Claire and the girl. "This is Tory. She's an old friend of mine. Technically, she's a friend of a friend."
"So, this is your girlfriend?" Tory asks.
Jason nods. "Yeah."
"It's nice to meet you. So, how long have you been working here?" Claire asks.
Tory lets out a breath. "Not that long. I started a few weeks ago."
Jason and Claire look at each other without saying anything.
"How've you been? How's your mom and brother doing?" Jason asks.
Tory has a pained expression on her face. "Mom's still pretty sick. But Brandon's okay."
"That's good to hear." Jason says.
Tory smiles slightly. "Thanks. I'd better get back to work. It was nice seeing you."
"It was nice seeing you too. Don't be a stranger." Jason answers.
They watch as Tory walks, or skates, away.
Jason turns his attention back to Claire. "So, what do you feel like eating?"
"I could really go for a hot dog. Oh, and fries! And a soda." Claire replies.
Jason smiles. "Great. You don't have to worry about paying for food, because you kind of already paid for the skates."
"Which is more than fair." Claire adds.
Jason nods. "Yeah."
They order food when someone else makes their way over to them.
Jason almost doesn't want the date to end, but he knows that it will have to end at some point.
But being with Claire makes it worth it.
….
Jason dropped Claire off at her house after the date was over.
He gave her a kiss before she went inside.
Jason drives home with the radio on.
He parks in the driveway and gets out of the car.
Jason walks up to the front door of his house and unlocks the door.
He opens the door and walks inside before closing it behind him.
Jason sits down on the sofa in the living room and turns on the TV.
He changes the channels until he stops on a movie.
The movie had already started, but he watches it anyway.
Today had been a good day.
