A/N: This chapter is going to be the last one before the Quiver Kickback. I'll be writing two or three chapters focusing on Christmas and New Year before covering (more or less) the rest of Season 1. But it's not going to be exactly the same as Season 1.
Disclaimer: I don't own the Karate Kid movies, Cobra Kai or anything else that I might reference.
At The Drive In
Jason woke up relatively early, even if it was a Saturday.
He took out a pair of boxer shorts, blue jeans, a belt, a Pantera t-shirt and black socks from the wardrobe and drawers in his room.
Jason puts those items of clothing on his bed.
He grabbed a towel and walked over to the bathroom.
Jason gets undressed and turned on the shower before stepping under it.
He turned off the shower after about twenty minutes or so, and washing the shampoo out of his hair.
Jason gets out of the shower and dries himself before wrapping the towel around his waist and taking his pyjamas out of the room.
He gets dressed after he walks back to his room.
Jason takes his wallet, phone and keys and puts them in the pockets of his jeans before he takes a denim jacket out of his closet and puts it on.
He walks down the stairs and goes into the kitchen.
Jason grabs a box of cereal, a bowl and a spoon.
He pours cereal into a bowl until he fills it before putting the box of cereal back where he found it.
Jason eats his cereal before washing the bowl and spoon and putting them in the dishwasher.
He decides to leave chores like running the dishwasher and going shopping for tomorrow.
Jason has plenty time before he'll go and pick up Claire and go to the drive-in movie theatre to watch Enter the Dragon.
He contemplates hanging out with Hawk and Demetri, but he did that a few weeks ago and they'd made plans to hang out next week.
Miguel had said something about watching Enter the Dragon with Sam, so they'd be at the drive-in movie theatre anyway.
Which left Leonard.
Leonard had been the last person to join Cobra Kai before the influx of new students after the cafeteria fight.
And, Jason hadn't really spent all that much time with Leonard even after he had joined Cobra Kai.
So, that settled things.
He puts on his shoes and opens the door of his house and steps outside before closing the door behind him.
Jason walks over to the Dodge Viper and unlocks it before getting in the driver's seat.
He fastens his seatbelt and turns on the radio before driving off.
It shouldn't take too long for him to find Leonard's house.
….
Jason stopped to get gas while on the way to Leonard's house.
He parked near the driveway of Leonard's house before getting out of the Dodge Viper.
Jason walked past the cars in the driveway, including a Mercedez Benz.
He walked up to the front door and rang the doorbell.
It's about a minute or so before the door is opened.
"You must be Jason, right? I'm Tom. Tom Cole. And I'm Leonard's dad. Come on in. Leonard's probably in the living room. If he's not in his room." Tom takes a step back and lets Jason walk in.
Jason closes the door behind him.
He follows Tom into the living room of the house.
Leonard is sitting on the sofa watching TV.
Tom walks into another room as Leonard turns off the TV and stands up.
Jason high fives Leonard who returns the gesture. "Hey!"
"What's up? Aren't you going to a movie with Claire?" Leonard asks.
Jason nods. "Yeah. But the movie's not until later. It's just that we haven't really hung out all that much since you joined Cobra Kai. You're one of the original five students that joined before the cafeteria fight."
"Oh. Well, why didn't you just say so? You probably didn't have breakfast. So, the kitchen should be our first destination." Leonard says.
Jason nods. "I had cereal. But that's probably not enough."
"Good thing we've got Pop Tarts, then. You like s'more flavoured ones?" Leonard asks.
Jason smiles. "Sure."
"Awesome. The kitchen is just over here." Leonard motions for Jason to follow him.
They walk over to the kitchen.
The kitchen is fairly spacious and looks very modern.
Which is kind of to be expected given how wealthy Tom Cole is.
Jason looks around the kitchen. "Wow. So, are you going to put the Pop Tarts in the toaster or can we just eat them as is?"
"We'll put them in the toaster. We're not animals." Leonard replies.
Jason watches as Leonard finds a box of s'more flavoured Pop Tarts and takes two from the box and unwraps them before putting them in the toaster and turning it on.
They stand around talking until the Pop Tarts are done.
Leonard takes a Pop Tart out of the toaster before handing the other one to Jason.
Jason bites into the Pop Tart. "Nice house. Is it just you two living here?"
"It's just me and Dad. My parents split up when I was younger. And I decided to live with Dad." Leonard replies.
Jason nods. "Cool."
They eat their Pop Tarts in relative silence.
"You want another one?" Leonard asks.
Jason nods. "If you don't mind."
He watches as Leonard takes two more Pop Tarts out of the box and unwraps them before putting the box back where he took it from.
Leonard puts the Pop Tarts in the toaster and turns it on.
"So, when will Claire, Aisha and I get black belts? Seeing as you and Miguel already got black belts. And Sensei doesn't really believe in following what other dojos normally do." Leonard wonders aloud.
Jason shrugs. "I'm not sure. I think Miguel and I got black belts because of the cafeteria fight. You'll probably get black belts after Christmas or something. Unless Sensei decides to give you black belts earlier."
"I guess you're right. It'll happen when it happens." Leonard says.
Jason nods. "Yeah. So, I wouldn't worry about it if I were you."
"Cool." Leonard answers.
The Pop Tarts were done and Leonard takes one out of the toaster before handing the other one to Jason.
Jason takes a bite out of his Pop Tart. "So, what's the rest of the house like?"
"It's pretty cool. We could go for a little tour after we've finished eating. And, I'm assuming that you've got time for lunch." Leonard replies.
Jason grins. "That sounds like a good idea."
They finish their Pop Tarts in relative silence after that.
"The first place we should go is the pool." Leonard suggests.
Jason agrees. "Good idea."
They leave the kitchen and walk to a door that leads out to the backyard of the house.
Leonard opens the door and steps outside.
Jason follows him.
There are chairs spaced out around the pool.
"This is the pool. There would be parties and stuff around here, but mainly during the summer. The pool house is down that way." Leonard points in the direction of the pool house.
Jason looks around. "It's a pretty big pool."
"Thanks." Leonard says.
Jason follows Leonard back into the house, after Leonard walks back to the door leading out to the pool and opens it.
They walk back into the house.
Jason closes the door behind him.
He follows Leonard to a set of stairs leading down to the basement of the house. "So, what's down here?"
"The basement. But it's not just one thing." Leonard answers.
Jason follows Leonard down the stairs into the basement.
The first part of the basement is a room with sofas and a plasma screen TV with a PS4 connected to it.
Jason looks around the room. "So, is this the only part of the basement?"
"Nope. There's more. Come on." Leonard walks through the room and opens the door.
Jason follows Leonard into the other room in the basement.
He looks around and can see a pool table in one part of the room.
The room looks a lot like a bar, if anything.
Jason looks around. "So, this room is like a bar, right?"
"Yeah. And, there's another room in the basement but it's the bathroom. But I'm not sure if you want to see that." Leonard replies.
Jason shakes his head. "I guess not."
"We can head back upstairs if you want." Leonard suggests.
Jason nods. "That would be a good idea. I'm kind of thirsty, and I was hoping that you'd have a soda. Or something."
"There's sodas in the fridge." Leonard replies.
Jason smiles. "Great."
They head back upstairs.
Leonard and Jason walk to the kitchen.
They each take sodas from the fridge before walking back into the living room and sitting on the sofa and a lounge chair respectively.
"I'm not sure if I've asked, or if it's come up, but how did you end up in Cobra Kai anyway?" Leonard asks.
Jason shrugs "Sensei fought Kyler and his crew outside the bodega near the dojo and I kind of helped. Plus, my grandfather started the original Cobra Kai with Terry Silver. Who was his war buddy."
"Holy shit. That does kind of explain a lot. Sensei kind of sees you as the "Leader" out of all of us. Along with Miguel, I mean." Leonard opens his soda and takes a drink.
Jason agrees. "I guess you're right. But I'm not sure if I really see myself as being the leader out of all of us."
"I'd say that you're the leader. Especially if you've got the family connection." Leonard remarks.
Jason watches as Leonard finishes his soda before he opens his soda and finishes it.
He looks around the room. "So, where's your dad?"
"He's probably in his office or something. You're welcome to stay for lunch. If you want." Leonard replies.
Jason shakes his head. "I'll probably just go and get lunch somewhere. And I'll head home before picking Claire up."
"No problem. It was pretty cool hanging out with you. See you in school on Monday." Leonard takes his empty can of soda along with Jason's empty can of soda and stands up.
Jason watches as Leonard leaves the room.
He gets up and walks towards the front door of the house and opens it before stepping outside.
Jason closes the door behind him and walks to where he parked the Dodge Viper.
He unlocks the car and gets in the driver's seat.
Jason turns on the radio before he drives off.
He was going to go and get lunch before heading home.
And then he'd go and pick up Claire.
He'd been looking forward to watching Enter the Dragon with her all week.
….
Jason got lunch at In 'N' Out before hanging around home for an hour or two.
He leaves his house to go and pick up Claire.
Jason parks in the driveway of Claire's house.
He gets out of the Dodge Viper and walks up to the front door of the house before ringing the doorbell.
A minute or so goes by before the door opens.
"Hey, Jason. Claire's going to be downstairs in a few minutes. She's just getting ready. You can come in if you want." Bobby says.
There is a notepad in Bobby's other hand.
Jason walks into the house and watches as Bobby closes the door behind him.
He looks around before focusing his attention back on Bobby. "Thanks for inviting me in."
"No problem. I heard that you and another student in Cobra Kai became black belts." Bobby replies.
Jason nods. "Yeah. Miguel and I got black belts a few days ago. Sensei doesn't believe in following what other dojos are doing."
"Johnny was always stubborn." Bobby has a wry smile on his face.
Jason scratches his head. "Yeah. So, what are you working on? A novel?"
"I'm working on my sermon for tomorrow. I generally tend to work on them during the week, but I was pretty busy this week. So, I just didn't have time to work on it." Bobby replies.
Jason understands. "Oh."
Bobby is about to say something when Claire emerges from her room and walks downstairs.
Jason watches as Claire gets to the bottom of the stairs and walks towards him until she comes to a complete stop.
"Were you waiting long?" Claire asks.
Jason shakes his head. "No. I just got here, actually."
"Cool. I think we should probably get going. Especially if we want to get a good spot." Claire suggests.
Jason agrees. "Good plan."
"Jason will drop me off later! Bye, Dad!" Claire says.
Jason watches as Claire walks to the door and opens it. Bobby goes into another room.
They both step outside as Claire closes the door behind them.
It's a short walk from the door to where Jason parked the Dodge Viper.
He unlocks the car and watches as Claire gets in the passenger seat.
Jason gets in the driver's seat and puts the key in the ignition before starting the car.
He doesn't turn on the radio as they drive off.
….
Miguel had done homework and any studying he had to do on Friday.
Which meant that he had time to hang out around the apartment and train. In addition to texting and FaceTiming Sam.
Yaya was going to be meeting friends later and Mom, surprisingly, had plans.
Which was kind of unusual.
But he didn't really think anything of it.
He heard a knock on the door.
"I think that might be Sam, Miggy. Why don't you go and see who it is?" Mom suggests.
Miguel nods. "I'll do that. Well, I'll probably just head to the movie if it's Sam."
He opens the door and sees Sam standing in front of him.
"Hey. So, are you ready to go?" Sam asks.
Miguel nods. "Yeah."
He steps out of the apartment and closes the door behind him.
"I know it's probably a bit early to talk about it, but what are your plans for Christmas?" Sam asks.
Miguel runs a hand through his hair. "I'll probably spend Christmas with my family. And, Jason might spend Christmas Eve with us because he doesn't really have any family. At least, not that I know of."
"Oh. Well, I'll be spending Christmas with my family. Including Aunt Julie and Uncle Eric as well as their kids." Sam replies.
Miguel looks at her. "Are they actually your aunt and uncle?"
"No. Aunt Julie was trained by Mr Miyagi in the '90s. They're more like family friends, but they're close enough to be family. If that makes sense." Sam answers.
Miguel nods. "I think it does."
They walk over to Sam's car.
Sam unlocks the car and Miguel gets into the passenger's seat before Sam gets into the driver's seat.
She puts the key into the ignition and starts the car after they put their seatbelts on.
"What are you doing between Christmas and New Year's Eve?" Sam asks.
Miguel shrugs. "I'm not too sure. Probably just hanging out at home."
"Do you want to come over one of the days? Aunt Julie, Uncle Eric and their kids will be staying until the start of January." Sam offers.
Miguel nods. "Sure."
"Great." Sam has a smile on her face.
They talk some more as they drive off.
There's still time before the movie starts, but they want to find a good spot.
….
Sam managed to find a good spot to park.
They were close enough to the screen of the drive-in movie theatre, but they weren't too close.
Miguel had gone to get food and watched as more people started arriving.
He noticed Jason's Dodge Viper being parked a short distance away.
Jason gets out of the car when it's parked and walks over to him.
"Hey, Miguel. I guess we're both getting food before the movie starts." Jason says.
Miguel nods. "Yeah. It's a good thing we got here early. Because all the good spots would have been gone if we left it any later."
"We probably would have been far away from the movie." Jason looks around.
There are more cars now.
Miguel can see different cars pulling up. "Enter the Dragon is surprisingly popular."
"It's a very good movie. And it still holds up." Jason adds.
Miguel agrees. "It definitely does. Are we going to get food or are we just going to stand around talking?"
"Food would be great. And I think there's somewhere we can get food. Let's go!" Jason walks to where there's food being sold.
Miguel follows him.
Jason ends up buying a hot dog, popcorn and a soda for Claire. He also buys two hotdogs, nachos and a soda for himself.
Miguel buys a hot dog for himself and Sam, popcorn for Sam along with jalapeno poppers for himself as well as sodas.
Miguel looks at the food that Jason is carrying. "Are you really going to eat two hotdogs and nachos?"
"Yep. It'd be rude not to." Jason replies.
Miguel changes the subject. "I'm looking forward to your party."
"Thanks. The Quiver Kickback is going to be pretty great. And there's not much time between it, Christmas and New Year's Eve." Jason replies.
Miguel smiles. "You're spending Christmas Eve with me and my family, and you're spending Christmas with Claire and her family. And then there's New Year's Eve."
"Yeah. I was thinking that you, me, Hawk, Demetri and Leonard could meet up on New Year's Eve. I just happen to know a place that doesn't look too closely at fake IDs." Jason says.
Miguel laughs. "Of course, you know a place that doesn't look too closely at fake IDs."
"I also knew a good fake ID guy. He made me a couple of fake IDs before I went to juvie." Jason replies.
Miguel nods. "That also makes sense. Anyway, I'd better get to Sam's car. She's probably going to wonder where I disappeared to. And the movie's going to start soon."
"Cool. See you on Monday." Jason walks off, presumably to his car.
Miguel walks back to the BMW.
He watches as Sam opens the door on the passenger's side.
Miguel gingerly passes Sam her food. "I think I got food and came back just in time. And I ran into Jason, too. Which makes sense, because he said that he'd be bringing Claire here during the week."
"So, what were you two talking about?" Sam asks.
Miguel shifts his food around and closes the door of the BMW.
He looks at Sam. "Well, we were talking about the party that he's having at his house before Christmas. He's inviting the other Cobra Kai students. But other people are invited, too. Including you."
"I wasn't quite sure. And I'm definitely looking forward to it. Did he talk about Christmas and New Year's as well?" Sam answers.
Miguel nods. "Yeah. Jason has got something planned for New Year's. He was pretty insistent."
"Really?" Sam looks a little surprised.
Miguel smiles. "Yeah. I think the movie might be about to start, by the way."
"Oh. It's a good thing you got food now, then." Sam says.
They turn their attention to the screen just as the movie starts.
Which was pretty good timing.
….
Johnny's date with Carmen was going very well.
They were currently in a nice but moderately priced Italian restaurant. And they had managed to get a nice table that wasn't near a bathroom or somewhere out of the way.
Johnny had ordered a bottle of Peroni because the restaurant didn't normally stock Coors Banquets and Carmen was enjoying a glass of red wine.
And the food was pretty good so far, too. Even if they only had their starters and some complementary olives.
Their main courses wouldn't be arriving for a little while.
"So, what did you do before you became a karate teacher?" Carmen asks.
Johnny takes a long sip of his beer. "Well, I was a handyman immediately before I became a Sensei. And I worked as a mechanic before that. Oh, and I worked as a doorman. But that was more sporadic. What about you?"
"I worked odd jobs putting myself through medical school. And I'm currently working as an X-Ray technician. It's not the most glamorous job, but I'm helping people." Carmen replies.
Johnny nods. "Exactly. You're doing what makes you happy. And that's what truly matters."
"Is that why you opened a dojo?" Carmen asks.
Johnny thinks about the question before he answers it. "Pretty much. Most of my students didn't know how to defend themselves before they came to the dojo. I taught them the skills that they needed to defend themselves. And they've also made friends since they've started training. That includes Miguel, in case you're wondering."
"Thank you for everything that you've done. Miguel's made a lot of new friends and he's got a girlfriend, too." Carmen drinks some of her wine.
Johnny scratches his head. "You're welcome. But I can't take all the credit. Miguel's a good kid. Actually, they're all good kids in their own way."
"I'm glad that you think so. Miguel really looks up to you, by the way." Carmen replies.
Johnny smiles "I kind of guessed. But I really don't mind."
"I was wondering if you'd like to spend Christmas with us?" Carmen asks, changing the subject slightly.
Johny is a little bit unsure. "Sure. That would be pretty nice. Um, unless you change your mind."
"I'm not going to change my mind." Carmen is quick to reassure him.
Johnny looks relieved. "Great. Things are a bit complicated in terms of my relationship with Robby. He's my son, by the way. And, I usually spent Christmas either by myself or with friends and their families."
"I'm sorry to hear that. I hope that you will be able to work things out with Robby." Carmen says.
Johnny nods slightly. "Me too."
"Excuse me, Sir and Madam. Your food will be ready in a few minutes. Let me know if you need anything else." A waiter walks over to their table and interrupts their conversation.
Johnny smiles. "Thanks."
"Thank you." Carmen says.
The waiter walks away.
Johnny turns his attention back to Carmen.
He takes another sip of his beer. "So, do you have any family besides Miguel and your mom?"
"No. Do you have any family besides Robby?" Carmen asks.
Johnny isn't quite sure how to respond. "Well, I have a stepfather. But we don't really keep in touch. And I consider my friends to be like family. I'm even godfather to one of their kids."
It's not long until a different waiter brings out their respective main courses on a tray and sets the plates of food in front of them.
"Shall we?" Carmen asks.
Johnny nods. "Definitely."
They eat and talk.
And they also drink their beer and wine respectively.
Their date was going very well so far.
The fact that they had gotten an Uber to near where the restaurant is located has definitely helped.
But the night is still young.
