Chapter 10
I'm bigger than my body
I'm colder than this home
I'm meaner than my demons
I'm bigger than these bones
And all the kids cried out
"Please, stop, you're scaring me"
I can't help this awful energy
Goddamn right, you should be scared of me
Who is in control?
Control – Halsey
An early morning phone call had me meeting Bonnie and Stefan at Caroline's house. As the four of us stand in Caroline's room Caroline asks "So, I don't get to choose the ring I have to wear the rest of my life?" Rolling her eyes Bonnie responds "Hey, if you don't want it..." "No, no, she wants it." Jumps Stefan to the rescue. "Now what?" Asks Caroline. "Now is the part where I explain the rules. The witch who spells the ring has the power to de-spell it so if you ever do anything to hurt anyone..." "I'm not going to hurt anyone." "You are a vampire that mean the urge to kill is a part of who you are. The minute you let it take over, I will stop you." "Bonnie, you're supposed to be my friend." "I can't ignore what happened, okay? If you want to be friends, you have to prove that the Caroline I remember isn't gone. Now put the ring on the bed." As Caroline puts the ring on the bed I turn to Bonnie and ask why I am her. "I thought you wanted to learn more about magic Annie?" I open and close my mouth before shrugging and nodding. Bonnie shoots me a small smile and turns to open the curtain a bit so that it shines on the ring. She then passes me her grimoire and points to the page with the spell she is using. Bonnie turns back to the ring and mutters the spell under her breath. "All done." Announces Bonnie as she passes the ring to Caroline who quickly puts it on. "So that's it? I mean nothing witchy happened. You know, no flickering lights, no gust of wind. Have you even done this before?" "Seriously Caroline just be thankful she did it at all." I snap back at Caroline. "What? I just want to make sure that it worked." With an annoyed sigh Bonnie reaches out and rips the rest of the curtain open showering the room in daylight. "It worked." States Bonnie in clear annoyance. "What if it hadn't Bonnie?!" screech's Caroline. Nodding towards me and the door Bonnie and I head out, as she passes Stefan, I hear her whisper "She's all yours." As we leave Caroline's house Bonnie asks if I am going to the watering hole tonight. "Not a chance its just another party where Tyler can flaunt his power, I am not interested." "Good, come sleep over then and we can work on some magic" A huge grin takes over my face and I excitedly agree.
That night with Bonnie we talk about everything going on lately. "Bonnie have I ever told you about these weird dreams I have" Shaking her head she says "Other than your recurring dream about marrying a marshmallow man?" I can't help but laugh at that "NO! I was five! I thought we agreed to never speak of that again!" giving me a smile she asks "then what dreams Annie?" "Well, ever since I can remember I have had the same dream of a man surrounded by darkness and covered in blood. I can never reach him though; it is like I am being blocked by an invisible barrier. Lately though he has been speaking and the other night the dream changed. He was fine and was holding his hand out to me asking for me to wait for him. Weird right?" Glancing at Bonnies face I struggle to read the emotion. "I don't know Annie sometimes dreams mean something, and sometimes they don't. I wonder if this is a magic thing we don't know about yet." "Maybe, I just don't know."
The next day I meet Tyler and the house for dinner, while Carol is out with her friends and Mason is at a Jenna's BBQ. "Something happened Annie and I don't know what to do about it?" States Tyler as we sit down to eat our ordered Chinese food. "What are you talking about Tye?" "I think Mason is a werewolf and I think it runs in our family." I feel my jaw drop as I stare at him. "I'm sorry you think what? How is that even possible?" Vampires, Witches, Werewolves, Oh my. How do I tell him about the other supernatural creatures lurking around Mystic Falls. "You don't seem too surprised there Annie." As I set my silverware down, I sigh and look directly at Tyler and say "I am a witch." "Haha very funny Annie. I can think of another thing you are." "I am not joking Tyler; my mom was a witch and I followed in her footsteps. She had me trained as a child before she died." "Fine. Prove it." He challenges me. Looking around I notice a candle on the shelf behind me. Standing up I grab it and place it on the table in front of Tyler. Closing my eyes I focus on the feeling of my amulet and pull while whispering "Incendia." With a brief flash the candle lights and Tyler jumps back in his chair. "Okay so you're a witch. Cool. Cool. Ummm how does being a witch werewolf work." I give Tyler a blank stare as I say "how would I know that, Tye?" nodding in agreement he settles in his chair as I turn to sit in mine. "So, some family secret huh?" I let out a laugh as I reach for my silverware to continue eating.
Later that night I hear Tyler and Mason talking more like arguing downstairs. Making my way down to the front hall I hear Tyler ask "Tell me how the curse's trigger." "If I tell you, you won't be able to think about anything else. I don't want that for you." Responds Mason. "I think I can handle knowing." "You think that you can handle it, tough guy? You have no idea." "You want your stupid rock or not?!" Yells Tyler in Masons face. As I reach the bottom step Mason grabs the front of Tyler's shirt and pushes him against the wall. "Tell me where it is!" Yells Mason as I rush beside them "Tell me what triggers the curse!" "You have to kill somebody! Human blood! You take another person's life away from them and then the curse is yours forever!" Mason release Tyler's shirt and continues "Can you handle that?" In that moment Mason looks towards me, "I guess you know now too." I simply nod at him as he angerly makes his way out of the front hall and towards his room. "Are you okay Tyler?" I whisper towards him. "I'm fine Annie. It's fine." As Tyler pushes himself away form the wall and makes his way to his bedroom I wonder, things just keep getting worse around here.
The next morning Tyler, Mason, and I are sitting in the front study listening to Mason tells us about when he trigged his curse. "No. No. I wouldn't do that; he was my friend. He was drunk and attacked me. It was self-defense." States Mason. "So even in self-defense you can trigger the curse?" looking towards me Mason nods before stating "On every full moon, I lose control. If I don't sedate myself and chain myself down, I'll kill anything in my path. You have to be careful. All it takes is an accident, a car wreck. Any death at your hands and you'll have a lifetime of this. Neither of you want this, trust me." "Wait so you're telling me us that if anything happens, we can trigger the curse, regardless of circumstances." "Yes Annie. Now Tyler a deal is a deal. Where is the moonstone?" Walking towards our fathers safe Tyler states "Um, yeah, I'm not sure but I'm guessing it's in here." As he opens the safe, he continues My dad, he was very kooky about his hiding spots but I figured most of them out over the years." Mason makes his way over to the safe as Tyler asks "Are you going to tell me what's so important about this rock or what?" "I told you, it's just something I want. Sentimental value." "Yeah, I'm not really buying that. Why do you really want it?" "Do you know where it is or not?" "No, I figured it would be in here, man." With a frustrated groan Mason slams the safe shut then storms out of the office. "Okay Tyler my turn. What the hell is a moonstone?" glancing towards me Tyler shrugs "I don't know but I don't really want Mason to have it?" sinking into the couch I let out my own groan as Tyler makes his way out of the room.
"Well Bonnie, apparently, I am not only a witch but potentially a werewolf as well. How is that for bad?" I tell Bonnie through the phone. "I don't actually know if you can be both Annie." "Fair but what if I can. Mason said that it is a Lockwood curse and is triggered if you kill someone. Around here that seems to happen all the time." Taking a deep breath I continue "God Bonnie, I have barely figured out this witch stuff. How am I supposed to figure out this werewolf stuff too?" "Listen to me Annie. Just be you and avoid killing. If we have to cross that bridge we will. Just try not to." "Okay. I guess you are right no point in freaking out over something that may never happen" from downstairs I hear what I think are Mason and Tyler Talking. "Listen Bonnie I have to go, talk to you tomorrow okay" I say as I hang up. Slowly I make my way out of my room and to the top of the stairs to listen in on Tyler and Mason's conversation. "It was an accident. I was being stupid. She's okay though but there I was, y'know, and just for a moment, for a split second, I hoped she would die. Look, whatever this is inside me, I don't want any part of it. I don't ever want to feel that way again. I won't. I can't." I hear Tyler confess. "I know." Responds Mason. Suddenly there is silence before Mason thanks Tyler for something. I watch as Tyler makes his way upstairs and I quickly sneak back towards my room. When Tyler reaches the top of the stairs, I call out to him, "What did Mason thank you for?" "I gave him the moonstone." "I thought you didn't want him to have it?" "I didn't, I am a dick. What can I say other than I changed my mind." He shares before turning back to his room and entering it.
