Chapter 8
"Lieutenant. I just wanted to apologise..." Octavia burst through the door, knocking be damned apparently, and instantly cut herself off after seeing what she walked in on. Clarke jumped away from Lexa. Shock and embarrassment evident on her her face.
Was she embarrassed that we almost kissed. Or that we were caught Lexa thought to heself. She had no idea but shook the thoughts quickly.
"Sorry." She apologised again. "I didn't mean to interrupt."
"It's okay O. I was just leaving." Clarke said as she made to push past Octavia in the door way. Before lexa could say or doing anything, Clarke was walking away and Octavia was blocking her from going after her. She resigned herself to the fact that she would just have to catch Clarke later and talk about what just happened. Or didn't happen.
"Octavia." She turned her attention to the youngest Blake. "What can I help you with?" She question.
"Umm.." She started, looking to where Clarkes retreating form had just been. "I just wanted to apologise for earlier and thank you again. I have no idea what I would do if I lost Bells." She let out. Lexa softened and stood up, she rest her hand on the other girls shoulder. She smiled at her and once again, said, 'no one left behind'.
"I also think I should apologise again." Octavia started, Lexa looked at her puzzled. "For.." She motioned towards the door and then to the bed, where Clarke had just been. Lexa sighed and shook her head.
"It's okay Octavia. Maybe next time, trying knocking though." She joked. Letting the younger girl know there was no hard feelings.
"Sooo.. You and Clarke?" Octavia went to question but the look that her lieutenant shot her told her all she needed to know. And that was to not push it and keep her mouth shut. She mumbled another sorry before ushering herself out of the door with a mention of doing an equipment check.
...
Lexa sighed to herself once again, flopping back down on the bed with an almost grunt of frustration.
What am I doing? She thought to herself, covering her face with her hands, she let out a frustrated groan. She was here to work. Not fall for someone.
Woah! Fall for someone?! She balked at herself. Was that what was happening? She couldn't be.. She'd known Clarke for all of 2 days. She can't be falling for her... I can't be falling for her..
…
Little did either woman know, they were both having the same internal battle.
…
Later that day..
Clarke was out by the ambulance when Finn found her. He had been thinking a lot lately, about Clarke mostly. And had wanted to ask her out on a date. He figured now was as good as time as any.
…
Lexa was watching Clarke from a distance. She'd been doing a stock check on the ambo but was currently, very aggressively, counting, packing, unpacking and re-counting bandages. Lexa wanted to talk to Clarke but as she went to walk over, she saw Finn making his way towards Clarke too.
She slowed her pace. She wanted to talk to Clarke but she wanted it private. But Finn seemed to be on a mission and she didn't want to get in the way.
She stopped at the back of her squad truck and 'busied herself' as she waited for Finn to leave.
…
Clarke was lost in thought when Finn approached. She looked up at the movement of something climbing in the ambo with her. She was surprised to see it was Finn and not Raven.
"Finn? Is everything okay? Do you need something?" She questioned. Her eyes going back to the bandages in her hand.
"Um.. Yeah.. Kinda.." he started, nervously. Clarke looked up at him and he continued. "I was just, kinda.. hoping to maybe.. or maybe you'd like to.." He was nervous and Clarke really didn't want to deal with this right now. She sighed..
"What is it Finn?" She pushed, wanting this to be over.
"I was wondering if you wanted to go on a date with me?" He rushed out. Clarke sighed. She dreaded this day.
"Look, Finn. I really appreciate you having the nerve to ask, but, now.. It's not the time. I am just not interested in anything right now." She tried to let him down easy.
"C'mon Clarke.." he whined. "Just one date. You know we'd be good together. What do you say?" he pushed..
"Finn." Clarke tried again. "I'm really not interested in anything right now. I'm sorry."
"Oh come on Clarke. You know you want to." he continued to push, ignoring her.
…
Lexa could over hear the conversation and she felt a surge of jealousy hit her when Finn asked Clarke out. She wanted to do nothing more that walk over there and tell him to get lost but she had no right. Her and Clarke weren't anything. She should probably walk away and leave them to their conversation with eavesdroppers. But her intrigue got the best of her and she wanted to hear Clarkes response.
"Look, Finn. I really appreciate you having the nerve to ask, but, now.. It's not the time. I am just not interested in anything right now." Lexa felt a little crest fallen hearing Clarke wasn't interested in anything right now but at the same time, she was relieved she had said no to Finn.
She heard Finn continue, almost ignoring Clarkes first answer. When Clarke denied him again, and he pushed a third time, Lexa had had enough and made her way towards the pair.
…
"I believe the lady said no." Lexa deadpanned before Clarke had a chance to respond. Finns head snapped around to Lexa, glaring at her for the disturbance.
"This is a private conversation. Now if you don't mind.." Finn barked and motioned for Lexa to leave. But Lexa didn't. She just stood there, refusing to move, arms folded and staring at him. He whipped his head back around to her after she didn't make to leave.
"I think you should leave." She firmly stated, her stare hardening and the muscles in her arms tensing, making him gulp. He huffed and with an angry grumble, made his way out of the back of the ambulance. Lexas bodied turned to watch him leave, which meant she caught the 'bitch' that Finn mumbled as he passed her. She went to make a move on him and call him out but a gentle hand on her shoulder stopped her dead in her tracks. It was Clarke.
"Don't." She whispered. "He's not worth it." Clarke smiled, appreciatively, down to Lexa. The two of them just kind of stood, unmoving, staring at each other for a few moments, Clarkes hand still on Lexas shoulder.
When Clarke removed her hand, Lexa instantly missed the touch but her mind snapped back to what Clarke had said not moments ago... I am just not interested in anything right now. Lexa knew she should clear the air about before but before she could speak, Clarke beat her to it.
"Thank you, for that. I really didn't want to deal with Finn. I've been dreading the day he finally asked." Clarke let out a small, nervous, laugh. "You kinda have impeccable timing. Like my own personal knight in shining armour."
"It was no problem. Honestly." Lexa replied before looking into Clarkes eyes. "I'd be happy to be your knight in shining armour any day." She flirted. She knew she shouldn't but there was just something about Clarke and she couldn't help herself. Clarke blushed at the comment, her head dipping slightly with a cute smile on her face. Lexa decided now wasn't the time to bring up their almost kiss from earlier. She didn't want to ruin this moment. This moment with Clarke looking so cute and bashful.
Lexa noticed Clarke began to fidget with her fingers, a clear sign she was nervous. So Lexa made to leave with an excuse of having reports to do. Clarke just nodded, not really wanting Lexa to leave but also not knowing what to say. She felt connected to this woman somehow but she just didn't know what to do.
