The air was cool and damp, rich with the scent of honey and freshly bloomed flowers, as Rin walked down the sidewalk at a brisk pace, single minded and determined in her goal: to reach the new, recently opened shopping center nearby.
The blonde girl's mind was filled with the bright, colorful, cheerful, happy clothes the store offered, at least according to the ads on TV and a magazine that heavily promoted them. The shopping center also had a food court, a bowling alley, a bookstore, a jewelry store and even a movie theater. The blonde shivered slightly as the air grew colder and the sky grew darker. Thunder boomed lowly in the distance, accompanied by a blindingly bright, white flash before sky opened, unleashing rain on the streets below in fast, cold drops.
A small pout twisted Rin's fragile looking, pale pink lips downwards and her large, depthless caerulean eyes flashed briefly with melancholy as the cold rain drenched her, flattened her clothes to her body as her pale colored shorts clung softly to her calves. It was then she remembered she'd left her pale orange umbrella hanging on the hook near her closet in her excitement.
'The weather said a slim chance of rain', She reminded herself, even though there'd been a ' slim' chance for three weeks and it'd rained at least once every week , 'you didn't think you'd need it.'
Suddenly there was warmth near her as a faint shadow fell over her face and rain seemed to abruptly stop.
"Here, we can share." Came a sweet, joyful, slightly deep voice on her right and Rin turned her head, fighting a breathless gasp as she looked into eyes eerily similar to hers, yet they seemed to be a deeper, richer dark blue, gleaming playfully with mischief as if they held closely guarded secrets.
"Oh…um, thanks!" Rin said confidently, somewhat embarrassed at getting so lost in a strangers eyes and fighting the urge to blush. For some reason, she felt the brief urge to wrap her small, pale hand above his slightly larger one on the black handle of the white umbrella. Her cheeks colored slightly at the though.
'There's no such thing as 'love at first sight.'' She thought bitterly, 'get a hold of yourself.'
"No problem," The blonde boy replied, "you're headed to that new mall, Crypton, right?"
"Yea. How'd you know?" Rin asked cheerfully, large dark blue eyes gleaming.
"'Cuz so am I," The boy looked forward, a smile appearing on his face, "thinking about getting a couple new piercings." It was then Rin noticed two softly gleaming diamond studs in his ear. He looked…. handsome, someone she could definitely see herself dating… but a strange sense of familiarity hung around him like mist, making her somewhat uneasy.
"I'm Len." The boy smiled and Rin's heart gave a small stutter.
"Rin." She replied as the air around them seem to pulse oddly, as if urging her to remember something even though she was positive she'd never met the boy in her life. She looked away, keeping her head down as they continued toward the train station. Rin was unaware that Len's thoughts were on a similar path. The white umbrella was closed as they stood under an awing, boarding the train after a short wait.
The eerie sense of familiarity didn't leave as Len sat across from her, stylishly messy bangs obscuring his eyes. The vague feeling swirled in the air between them.
"Hey," Rin began softly, feeling a little surprised when her heart skipped a beat as Len's eyes met her dark blue orbs, "….. we've never met before, have we?"
Len blinked in surprised, caught off guard by the random, weighted question and for a brief moment, Rin feared she was crazy.
"Not until today, no." The boy looked he wanted to add something else before deciding against it with a subtle shake of his head.
"But…" Len continued, check dusted a faint pink –a perfect contrast to his smooth, porcelain skin –as he looked at her owlishly. "I can't help but feel like I know you from somewhere. You're sure…?"
He trailed off as Rin blinked, eyes clouded in though before shaking her head.
"Favorite color?" The boy asked.
"Orange!" Rin responded eagerly, eyes wide and bright with excitement.
Len couldn't help himself, letting out a small laugh at the cute, excitable girl before him. The slightly melodic sound seemed to carry a warmth that made Rin's heart leap happily in her chest before picking up its pace. She noticed a black hair tie that seemed out of place and realized some of Len's hair was in a short ponytail, the end brushing the base of his scull.
"Favorite fruit?" Len asked.
"Oranges!" Rin responded as eagerly as the first time, just as Len though she would.
He tapped his bottom lip with a yellow painted fingernail in thought, noticing Rin had her fingernails painted yellow as well.
"Hey," The cheerful girl asked, eyes shimmering like stars as she leaned forward, "When's your birthday?"
"December 27th." Len's voice trails off as the atmosphere around them shifts, becoming lighter and…. happier? All the boy can do is blink owlishly in surprise as Rin does the same.
"M-Me too." Rin admits softly as the resounding silence seems to echo around them.
"Last name?" They both ask in unison — almost afraid of the answer — before a soft, knowing smirk appears on both there faces.
"Kagamine!" They said loudly at the same time, blinking in surprise before bursting into laughter. The sound with soft and magical, familiar and … nostalgic.
"Whoa… that's weird!" Len wipes a tear of laughter from his eye, 'weird' doesn't even begin to describe the surreal situation. It's like fate brought them together or something.
"It is certainly strange." Rin agrees, having fully recovered and now seeming be in a sort of 'calm shock' as a memory tugs at the edge of her mind. It becomes clearer and clearer the more she focuses on it.
"Hey, um…" She blushes. "D-Do you remember w-when we where six?"
"Oh yea," Len let out a small, breathy laugh, "I wanted to show you how much my 'worm' had grown."
There mother had gasped, hand masking the sound before hastily pulling the twins apart wordlessly. That was the time they saw each other, the adults too embarrassed to explain and the twins too shocked to cry. Silence filled the air as both reflected on the memory before laughing once more.
"That was an overreaction, wasn't it?" Len asked, heart fluttering in relief as Rin nodded. The rain had died down to a drizzle as they got off the train. Entering the mall, Len obediently followed the excited girl, offering his opinion as she modeled different outfits.
Len smirked slyly, seeing a pair of orange panties hemmed in frilly lace. He slipped them into her bag as Rin tried on a cat hoodie, complete with ears and tail.
