Never the Gift

Disclaimer: I do not own Buffy the Vampire Slayer or any of the characters. Everything belongs to Joss Whedon. This is completely AU and at the request of Datia.

This is a different turn on season five of the show and to see what the story turns into.

This is a dark and violent story.

Chapter One: After Shock

She thought she was safe. Xander untied Dawn at the top of the tower. The Doc was dealing with Spike. Before anyone could do anything, Xander pushed Dawn off the tower. The portal closed. Buffy's mouth dropped in shock. Earth returned to normal. Dawn's limp body was on the ground. She ran to her sister and shook her.

"Dawn!" Buffy yelled. "Dawn!"

Her heart was torn. Xander, her best friend, had betrayed her. Dawn was unresponsive. Willow came up behind her and pressed her hand on her shoulder. Buffy shrugged her off and held Dawn in her arms. Uncontrollable tears streamed down both her cheeks.

"Dawn! Come on please!" Buffy wailed. "Please wake up! Please wake up!"

Buffy couldn't believe what happened. Xander…Why would he do that to Dawn? Dawn was like a little sister to him. Buffy swore that if anyone came near Dawn that she would kill them. She gripped her sister's body in her arms and sniffled. Tears ran down her cheeks. Xander placed his hand on Buffy's shoulder and she shrugged it away.

"Oh Dawn…" Buffy whispered. "I promise I'll get your revenge."

She carried her sister's body to the house. Everyone was silent on the way there. The coroner came and picked up Dawn's body. Buffy stayed in her room, crying. She was devastated. Dawn was everything to her. She tied her to this Earth. Now that she was gone, what was she to do? Buffy wondered. She swore to Giles that if Dawn died, she would quit.

That's exactly what she was going to do. She made a decision that she didn't trust her friends anymore. The more she grieved the more Buffy hated them. She cried herself to sleep and the next day, Giles tried to talk to her. He knocked on her door and waited for an answer. Buffy said nothing. Giles opened her door and asked,

"How are you doing?"

Buffy was still in bed, not moving. Her heart was broken. Her sister was dead. How in the hell did he think she was doing?! Buffy was furious. Giles walked over to the bed and sat down next to her. He sighed heavily and said,

"I know this is hard, but Xander did the right thing." Giles paused. "He stopped the ritual. He saved the world."

"I don't care." Buffy spat.

"Buffy…" Giles said, upset.

"Get out." Buffy demanded.

"Buffy, you have to understand-" Giles started, but Buffy glared at him. He stopped and got up off the bed.

"Get out, get out, get out!" Buffy screamed.

Giles left the room and closed the door. Willow walked out of her room, hearing the screaming. Willow was concerned. She worried for Buffy. She had never seen her friend like this. Giles closed the door gently behind him and looked at Willow. He shook his head and said,

"She's not ready for company."

"I heard screaming," Willow said. "I just wanted to check on her."

"She's mad at me." Giles said. "I think she's mad at all of us."

"She just needs time." Willow said. "What Xander did was wrong."

"You don't really believe that do you?" Giles asked.

Willow nodded. "What Xander did was wrong. I can't believe he pushed Dawnie off the platform. Now Buffy is never going to speak to any of us again."

"I think she will," Giles said. "We just need to give her time like you said. Xander did what he thought was right and I support him."

"Really?" Willow asked and Giles nodded in response.

With those words, the two went their separate ways. Giles went back to his apartment. Willow went back to her room and closed the door. Meanwhile, Buffy stared at the ceiling and let her mind wander. She remembered all the good times she had with Dawn and the bad. Buffy cried and sniffled. She was in bed all day and all night.

She didn't eat anything. She occasionally came out of her room for the restroom, but Buffy mostly stayed in bed. The next day was the funeral. As she was getting ready, Buffy realized that she lost everyone. She had no family left. Her flesh and blood was gone. Willow helped Buffy into Xander's vehicle and they left for the cemetery.

The whole way there, Buffy said nothing. She just stared at the back of Xander's head. Well, mostly glared. He was the reason behind all of this. He was the reason why Dawn was dead. Buffy clenched her fists. Willow reached for her hand and Buffy shrugged it off. She hated everyone.

At the cemetery, Buffy buried her sister. Giles was there and said a few kind words. Everything that everyone said went in one ear and out the other. As Dawn's body went into the ground, Buffy sobbed. She was dead. Dead and gone. The priest finished the ceremony and Buffy stayed behind.

She sat at the tree next to her sister's body.

"Oh Dawn," Buffy said. "I wish you were here. I can't believe that Xander did that to you. You must have been so scared."

Spike appeared next to Buffy. "I did what I could."

"I know you did," Buffy told him. "I don't blame you."

"You blame someone. You blame them?" Spike asked.

Buffy nodded. "Yeah, I blame them and I think I know what I need to do."

"Oh?" Spike asked.

Buffy turned to him. "I need your help to do it."

"You want to knock someone off?" Spike asked with a grin. Buffy was serious, which startled Spike. He put his hands up in defense. "Whoa, easy there Slayer." Spike said and took a step back. "Think about what you're saying."

"I have." Buffy said. "I wasn't kidding when I said I would kill anyone who came near Dawn. Xander started this. He killed her. They all must pay."

"Alright," Spike agreed. "Where do we start?"

"We start with Willow." Buffy said. "Let's go back to the house."

"Already?" Spike asked. "Buffy, are you sure you want to do this? They're your friends."

"I know what I'm doing Spike," Buffy said through gritted teeth. "I quit my destiny. I quit everything. All I want is revenge."

Spike looked at her and nodded. His face changed into vampire mode. "Let's go then."

On the way there, the two were quiet. Spike remained in vampire mode. They walked to the house and Buffy stared at the front door. Her life was about to change. She wasn't sure if she was ready, but she knew what she wanted. Buffy walked to the front door and let Spike in. Buffy turned to him and demanded,

"Find her."

Spike went downstairs and Buffy went into the kitchen. She grabbed a knife before she headed upstairs. She found Willow in the bedroom. Buffy knocked on the door.

"Will?" Buffy said through the door and Willow answered it. "Spike!" Buffy called out for help and shoved Willow into the room.

"Buffy?!" Willow cried out, startled.

Spike came upstairs with rope in his hands. "I thought we might need this."

"Good thinking." Buffy said and took the rope from him.

Willow looked panicked and scooted backwards. "What is this?!"

"You all killed Dawn." Buffy said. "I told you what would happen if that happened. I was serious."

"Buffy, please!" Willow begged and stood up.

Spike shook his head. "I'm sorry Will, but Buffy has made up her mind."

He walked over to the door and closed it behind them. Spike locked it and Buffy walked over to Willow. Tears streamed down Willow's cheeks.

"Buffy, are you evil?" She asked. "Did something happen?"

"I made a promise before we tried to save Dawn." Buffy said. "And I intend to keep it."

Buffy tackled Willow and pinned her down. She drew the knife and stabbed her. Willow cried out in pain. Buffy's face was serious as she stabbed her friend. Her heart broke into pieces as she killed her friend. Once Buffy was finished, Willow's eyes closed. Blood was everywhere. She threw the knife down and sobbed. She wasn't sad for Willow. She was still sad for Dawnie. Spike looked at her, shocked. His face turned human and he walked over to Buffy, to comfort her.

"Why don't you go take a shower?" Spike asked. "I'll take care of the body."

Buffy nodded and stood up. Her hands were shaking, but she walked to the bathroom. She closed the door behind her. Buffy took off of her clothes and stepped into the shower. The water hit her back and she sat down in the middle of the shower. Willow's blood washed off of her and Buffy trembled. What did she just do? She panicked.

The panic wore off and anger replaced it. Dawn was dead. Dawn was dead because of Xander. Buffy shook her head and grabbed her hair. She sobbed as the blood washed down the drain. After a half an hour, Buffy finished her shower and got out. By the time she was done, Spike had taken care of the body.

She was actually impressed that the room looked clean too. She changed into cleaner clothes and searched for Spike. He was in the living room. Spike stood up and brushed himself off.

"Well?" Spike asked. "How do you feel?"

"Empty." Buffy answered honestly.

Author's Notes: Admins: I warn the readers because this is a violent story. This was a little difficult to write, but I think I got it! It was just so dark. The story does get darker, but I promise to write longer chapters as the story continues! This was just a start! All reviews are welcome!
