Author's Note: Sorry for taking too long to update this story. Writing those other stories took longer than I thought. It didn't help that I constantly got distracted whenever I sat down to write. I probably could've been back on this story a while ago, but I like to update my stories in bulk instead of updating them right after I finish a chapter.
I also didn't want to do an "Update Chapter." I'm not a fan of those because they usually get people's hopes up when they see a story updated only to be disappointed to see the author say "This story is on hiatus," or "This story is canceled."
So, to make up for the long wait, here are two new chapters.
Naomasa stretched his arms after a nice long nap. After hearing all those stories, he thought it would be best for everyone to get a little rest. They were conducting the interrogation late at night. It was so good that he felt as if he'd been sleeping for over a year.
Naomasa got off the couch in the station's breakroom and brewed some coffee.
"I'm gonna need more than one cup if I'm gonna be able to get through today," he muttered.
"Can you pour me a cup?"
Naomasa jumped with fright but instantly calmed down when he saw it was Eraser Head.
"I thought you went home," Naomasa said as he poured two cups. Eraser Head grumbled as the detective handed him his cup.
"It was more convenient to stay than travel back and forth from home."
Naomasa couldn't argue with his logic. That would make him a hypocrite. He finished pouring cream into his coffee and walked to the breakroom table. Lying on top was the manila folder that held the information they had stockpiled of the vigilante they had in custody. They had everything they knew about him from his first alleged sighting to his last.
He pulled out the form that was related to the topic they had last discussed, the USJ Incident. What he told him aligned with what the students had said. He also had to give him credit for escaping a UA-owned facility without getting caught, but given the circumstances, he was sure he would've been caught on any other day. However, there was one thing that bugged him.
"It seems oddly convenient how he stumbled upon a group of thugs that the League was asking to invade the USJ," he said while putting the form down. A lot of things about his stories were too convenient. He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time when things were going down.
"You saw how many villains were arrested that day," Eraser Head countered before taking a sip of his coffee. "And being lucky is part of the job."
Naomasa had to agree. Throughout history, police officers and heroes have been lucky when facing criminals. He got lucky on his first murder case when his mechanic told him some things that only the police and the murderer would know. He didn't even use his quirk for that case.
And don't get him started on the multiple times he got lucky when he was a police officer.
Getting back on track, Naomasa pulled another form from the folder. Since the vigilante was telling him stories in chronological order, he knew the case that would come next. It was one he was looking forward to, and also the one that put Jack Rabbit on the map.
Finishing his coffee and pouring another cup, Naomasa grabbed his things and headed for the door. He gave Eraser Head a serious look with a hint of excitement.
"Let's get our friend from his holding cell. It's time we learn how he stopped the Hero Killer."
Izuku froze as time slowed down. Of all the things that Miss Azumi could have walked in on, him standing in the middle of his room wearing his costume was the worst. Anything else would have been preferable. Her reaction was even worse.
He had never heard her use that type of language. For as long as he stayed at the orphanage, no matter how angry she got, she had never cursed. Then there's the way she was looking at him. Thankfully, he didn't see any slits in her eyes, but she looked mad and concerned.
Time started to return to normal, and Izuku slowly put his hands up defensively. This was an extremely sensitive situation, and any sudden moves could send everything into disarray. If he played his cards right, he might be able to get out of this unscathed. He swallowed hard before making his case.
"I-I can explain…" Izuku started. Miss Azumi didn't let him continue because she rushed right at him. Izuku thought it was over and that he was going to get thrown out, but he quickly realized she wasn't looking at him. She was looking at his arm.
"What happened to your arm!?"
She sporadically moved her hands around his arm. She was trying to find the perfect spot to hold it but not hurt him in the process. When she did touch his arm, Izuku did a quick intake of breath, and she instantly pulled her hands back. While she was worrying over him, Izuku was feeling euphoric relief.
Miss Azumi was more worried about his injured arm than anything else. She might not have noticed the costume he was wearing. He could use this to his advantage, but he has to be smart. He might never get another chance like this again.
Izuku lightly grabbed his arm and cringed. He tried to force out a tear, but that would require him to grip his arm tighter. Something he wasn't willing to do yet. Thankfully, his initial reaction was enough.
The looks of concern that Miss Azumi had given him made him feel uneasy but also relieved. He hated that he was manipulating her, but he was glad his plan was working. All he needed to do was give his best performance to drive it home.
"I think I might've broken my arm," Izuku said with a light sob. He also bit his lip to show how much pain he was in, which was not hard to do. Miss Azumi took a few deep breaths and shook her hands, letting him know he got her where he wanted her.
"How? And what are you wearing?" She asked, finally noticing the costume.
Izuku knew this would happen, but since she was drawn more to his arm, he didn't have to worry about her paying close attention to anything else. He also thought about going with his original excuse of falling down the stairs, but he didn't know how long Miss Azumi had been home. What he did know was that she wasn't in the backyard when he got back. He could use that.
"I l-lied about being sick because there was a Con I w-wanted to go to. I tried sneaking out through my window, b-but my foot slipped, and I fell off the tree," Izuku lied with a couple of sobs. He didn't have to worry about going into great detail about his lie. In this day and age, there were Cons almost every day for any hero. People usually dress up as the hero the Con was dedicated to, but there were a few people who would wear original costumes.
Miss Azumi let out a long, drawn-out sigh while rubbing the bridge of her nose. The look of disappointment that Miss Azumi gave him told Izuku that she believed his story. It hurt, but he would rather take the emotional hit than have her know his secret.
"Izuku…" Miss Azumi said slowly, which hurt his soul. "I'm upset that you lied to me, and I'll think of your punishment later. Right now, we need to get your arm checked out. I'll give you time to change, and if you need help I'll get some scissors."
Miss Azumi left, and Izuku collapsed onto his bed after the stress had gotten to him. He let out a long sigh of relief. He didn't know how, but he managed to talk his way out of that. Everything that happened at the USJ was almost bearable in comparison.
Not wanting to make Miss Azumi wait any longer, Izuku started the painstakingly slow process of taking off his costume. He just hoped his friends were doing better than he was.
After All Might launched that bird monster into the stratosphere, Fumikage thought it was over. The number one hero was here, and he had just beaten the villains' biggest weapon. So, color him surprised when the hands guy and the mist guy didn't make any inclination to leave. The mist guy must've talked the hands guy into staying because he was the one who wasn't panicking between the two.
Fumikage wasn't worried about them in the slightest. All Might was here, and he was much more powerful than those two, even in his injured state. The thugs who were slowly recovering didn't appear as much of a threat as before. He and Shinso had already beaten a few, and if Tsu, Todoroki, Kirishima, and Bakugo made it back to the plaza they must have as well.
What Fumikage was worried about were the two severely injured heroes. He couldn't tell how hurt Thirteen was, but if he were to go off of the damage to their costume, it hadn't to have been good. Thankfully, Uraraka and Sato were trying their best to keep the hero alive, or at least awake. Mr. Aizawa, on the other hand…
"You need to stay awake, Mr. Aizawa!" Shinso said while doing his best to nurse their teacher, which was akin to putting a bandaid on a cannonball wound.
Mr. Aizawa looked as if he was hit by a train rather than being in a fight. He was bloodied and bruised all over. There was a missing chunk of skin on his arm. He had an arm and a leg bending in ways an arm and leg shouldn't.
It had to have been some miracle that Mr. Aizawa was still alive.
"D-Do you think we should t-try to leave? The v-villains are distracted, so n-no one's guarding the d-door," the small boy, Mineta, raised a good point.
Fumikage looked back at the plaza and then at the door. Just as Mineta said, the door was unguarded. They could easily pick up the two injured heroes and walk out. They could easily call for help once they were outside.
"I don't think we should move these two in their current state, ribbit. It was dangerous moving Mr. Aizawa up here with how much blood he had already lost, and from the look of Thirteen's costume, they might be in worse shape," Tsu argued.
Looking at Mr. Aizawa, he wasn't lying in a pool of his blood. Fumikage didn't know if that was a good thing or not because of how beaten up he was, but Tsu was right. They couldn't move either hero unless they wanted to risk them losing what little remaining blood they might have.
"And not everyone is here yet," Mina added.
Fumikage looked amongst the group and saw ten of his classmates were missing. He already knew Kirishima, Todoroki, and Bakugo were down at the plaza, but that still left seven unaccounted for. That made some of them worried. They had no idea where their missing friends were or how much danger they were in.
Sato and Shoji looked ready to leave and search for them. Fumikage knew that was stupid, and Mr. Aizawa would've stopped them before they even had the idea. But Fumikage didn't know if he had the strength to stop them. With Dark Shadow, he could, but he was exhausted after everything he went through.
He also knew they wouldn't listen to him. He bet none of them would if he told them to stay and not look for their friends. They would only listen to a pro. Someone who had experience dealing with villains, even though he just got back from fighting a group of thugs.
He looked at Tsu, almost asking her to do something, but she was a mess. Her hair was all over the place, and her costume was torn around her arms, legs, and stomach. She had cuts, bruises, and blood all over her exposed skin. Thankfully, she had no cuts around the more personal areas of her body.
But the worst thing he noticed was the distant look in her eyes. She was here physically, but somewhere entirely different mentally. He had never seen her look this way. It was greatly unnerving.
Fumikage fought with himself, wondering if he should stop his two classmates from risking their lives or helping his friend. He couldn't risk having more of his classmates being in danger, but his friend looked horrible. He couldn't abandon her.
Thankfully, Uraraka took care of one of his problems.
"But don't worry, we managed to bust Iida out of here earlier. He should be back soon with some help," Uraraka spoke up and reminded the two boys she was with through the entire ordeal.
Knowing that help is on the way eased the minds of everyone. They were able to go back to caring for their injured teachers. Fumikage took the chance to check on his friend. She looked a lot worse up close, and he could see some open wounds that were leaking blood.
"How are you holding up?" He asked. That broke her out of her trance as she shrugged and placed some pressure on one of her wounds.
"I've been better, ribbit," she cringed. Fumikage went to ask Shinso for some bandages, but he had used all of his on Mr. Aizawa.
"What happened?"
"I was sent to the flood zone, and it was swarmed with villains with aquatic-like quirks. I was able to hold my own for a little bit, but they quickly overwhelmed me," she cringed once again. Fumikage helped ease her to the ground. He was about to rip his shirt to make a makeshift bandage, but Tsu stopped him. "You don't need to do that. This won't kill me."
"But I should do something. They'll get infected if I don't."
"I'll be fine, ribbit," she said while squeezing his hand. "Worry about helping the others when they show up. I'm sure Hagakure would love it if you dote over her."
Fumikage blushed, but then quickly realized that Hagakure wasn't there. If she was, then she would've run up to him the instant she saw him. Which meant she was still out there fighting for her life. He swallowed hard as his concerns began to rise.
She wasn't the strongest student in their class. Her costume also wouldn't do anything to protect her. If a villain can get their hands on her, Fumikage doesn't want to think about what could happen. He had to help her.
He'll search every zone for her. He'll avoid every villain that he could by hiding in the shadows. It'll be good practice for him in the future. The only thing that was stopping him was his friend's tongue wrapped around his wrist.
Fumikage looked at her, wondering why she was stopping him while she looked at him as if he was crazy.
"I know what you're thinking, and it's not a good idea."
"But she might need my help," Fumikage told his friend and Dark Shadow emerged to nod along to what he said. He tried prying his wrist away from her, but she only tightened her hold in response. She then pulled him to the ground, showing him how easy it was to stop him.
But he kept fighting. He had to go save Hagakure. He called upon Dark Shadow to help him out, and with their combined efforts, he was able to break free. He stood up but was quickly knocked back to the ground with a hard slap.
It was then that Fumikage noticed how worried Tsu was.
"And who's going to help you when you're in trouble? You're not in the best of shape right now, ribbit," she said with a slightly raised voice.
Fumikage didn't know what she was talking about. He was a little bruised up, but that didn't mean he couldn't go out and look for his friend. It was then that he slowly realized how much his chest was hurting. He also realized how hard it was to breathe.
He grabbed hold of his chest and curled into a ball. He was in so much pain. He looked over at Shinso and saw he was also feeling some pain as well. They must've gotten injured when they fell from that building.
Fumikage was only able to stomach the pain because Tsu ran her soothing hand through his feathers.
Iida arrived shortly with the teachers and an army of first responders. Present Mic, Snipe, and Ectoplasm cleaned house by eliminating multiple thugs at the same time. The first responders, who were being led by some weird dog, mouse, or bear animal, were leading the students out of the building and safely carrying the injured pro heroes to ambulances. Fumikage couldn't see what was going on, but he could hear the carnage that was happening behind him.
Now outside, Fumikage, Tsu, and Shinso were led over to a medical tent. Inside was Recovery Girl, who had already set up some beds for them to lay on. She got right to work on Fumikage and Shinso because their injuries were more severe. It turned out Fumikage had a few fractured ribs, and Shinso had some cracked ribs and a fractured arm.
After healing their injuries, she ushered the two boys out of the tent. By then, they saw more of the classmates being ushered out along with the army of thugs. Cementoss was directing the students to a safe spot for them to hang around until it was safe enough for the bus to take them back to UA. It was there when Fumikage felt someone latch onto his back.
"Fumi! I'm so glad to see you made it out, OK!"
It was Hagakure. Fumikage couldn't stop the small smile on his face from forming. He turned to face her, but he couldn't see any sign of her. Which meant…
"You're, uh, not wearing your costume," Fumikage coughed to hide his embarrassment.
"Yeah, I ditched it after I was teleported," she explained. "Todoroki was sent to the same place I was. He froze all of the villains with one move. He's really strong."
"It's good to know you're safe," he told her with full sincerity. Dark Shadow also emerged to show he was also happy to hear this.
Knowing that she was safe, Fumikage moved on to more pressing matters. With everything that happened, he couldn't fully think about it until now, and there was one person who could help him. Making his way through the crowd, Fumikage found the person he was looking for.
"Excuse me, Shinso. Could you tell me what you know about the vigilante that helped us?"
