Izuku was surprised when the doctor came back with his X-rays. Turns out not only did he have a broken arm, but also bruised ribs, clavicle, and scapula all on his right shoulder. He thought he only escaped with a broken arm, but he should have known Dark Shadow wouldn't be much of a cushion from that height. Miss Azumi almost fainted when she heard and saw the results.
The worst was his arm. His ulna had snapped in half, and his radius was close to breaking. His shoulder wasn't as noticeable. It was a little swollen, but it might as well have been invisible compared to his arm.
Thankfully, his recovery time won't be long due to all the advancements in medicine because of the improvement of technology and with the help of quirks. He did have to get some metal plates in his arms, wear a cast for weeks, and have a majority of his upper body wrapped in bandages. But those were things he could live with. After that big fall and the monster's strength, he was glad he still had all his working limbs.
He did have to stay at the hospital. The doctors wanted to make sure the surgery went off without a hitch and that he had no negative reaction to the drugs they gave him. He understood why, but he wished he could've gone home. It was so boring to stay in his room, and he wanted to go to the hideout and help Mei with anything while he recovered.
But he had no choice. What the doctor said was final, and Miss Azumi told him to consider it as "part of his punishment." Even though he was seriously hurt, Miss Azumi still punished him for lying and skipping school. He wasn't allowed to watch TV or have his phone at the orphanage for a week, and he had to go straight home after school.
Seeing that he wouldn't get that many chances to do it for the foreseeable future, Izuku decided to watch some TV. The hospital had a lot of blacked-out channels, mostly the ones that had shows he wanted to watch. So, he relinquished watching the news, which happened to be talking about UA's USJ.
The TV showed a woman with red hair in a news studio with a caption next to her saying, "Under Attack?" Playing off of UA's name.
"After a class trip gone wrong, hundreds of street thugs have been detained and are currently being transported to Musutafu Penitentiary," a video played next to the reporter showing multiple villains in handcuffs being loaded onto buses. "UA's Unforeseen Simulation Joint, or USJ, was attacked earlier today by multiple villains. We go live to Yuuji with more on this story."
The screen cut to a man with long blond hair and pointed ears standing outside of UA's gates.
"...What was supposed to be an important lesson for the future generation of heroes almost turned into a tragedy…"
The screen showed a lot of B-roll footage of the surrounding area around UA.
"Earlier today, Class 1-A and their teachers were attacked and held hostage by an army of villains. It was only through the students' combined efforts that they could call for help and hold off the villains until the heroes arrived. The number one hero All Might answered their call and handled the threat. This is what UA's principal, Nezu, had to say on the matter."
The screen then switched to a white mouse, dog, bear creature in a dapper suit standing behind a podium with a lot of microphones in his face.
"I would first like to commend our students for showing great bravery in the face of danger. Today, they showed all of us that we're in great hands. I would also like to personally thank Eraserhead and Thirteen for risking their lives to protect the students."
The screen then showed more B-roll of the plants around UA.
"All Might is one of the school's Heroics teachers. When asked why he wasn't there from the start, Principal Nezu had this to say."
The screen cut back to the principal.
"He had a lot of unfinished paperwork. I couldn't let him go until it was finished."
The screen cut back to Yuuji, who had a somber look.
"When asked about the paperwork, Nezu said it was confidential. Back to you in the studio."
The screen cut back to the woman who wore a more cheerful look.
"...When asked about the students and teachers Nezu said Recovery Girl treated the students who suffered some minor injuries while the two pro heroes were airlifted to a private hospital where we have been told they will make a full recovery. Up next, sports…"
Izuku muted the TV when the report ended and relaxed into his bed. He felt more at ease knowing everyone involved was receiving help, especially his friends. Sadly, he wasn't able to get a good look at Tsu and see if she was fine when he was at the USJ, but he knew that Fumikage got hurt. He jumped off that building with him, so he knew his friend must have had similar injuries as him.
Thinking about Fumikage, Izuku knew his friend had some questions for him. He couldn't think about it earlier for obvious reasons, but now that he was alone, it gave him time to think. He wasn't an idiot. He knew Fumikage knew his secret, or at least had an idea. He wouldn't be able to lie out of this.
He couldn't believe this was how one of his friends discovered his secret. It was dumb luck if he was being honest. It was dumb luck that it was his friends' class that was under attack, and it was dumber luck that his friend was teleported to the area he was in. Izuku wanted to know the odds of that happening again if he had to do that a second time.
But he couldn't dwell on it. What he could do was plan on what he needed to do. He could lie, but he knew that wouldn't get him far. Or, he could tell the truth and hope for the best.
Whatever he chose to do, Izuku needed to be ready and know what to say because he didn't want to lose his friendship with Fumikage or his relationship with Tsu.
When they got the call from Miss Azumi, they left for the hospital the first chance they got. The elevator ride was quiet for different reasons. Tsu was worried to no extent. Hearing her boyfriend was in the hospital with a broken arm and injured shoulder, Fumikage was surprised she didn't scale the building to find his room.
Fumikage was quiet for a different reason. He was worried for his friend's health, but he was astonished by what he saw and what Shinso told him. He couldn't believe his friend had been a vigilante for months, maybe even a year. It was surprising, to say the least.
In all the years he had known Izuku, his friend hadn't shown much interest in heroes. He didn't dislike heroes, but he didn't care about them like the other kids in their school. There were many reasons why, but there was one reason that stood above the rest. Izuku was quirkless, and he had to question if that was true.
There were times when it appeared his friend was moving faster than everything at the USJ. Then, there was also him catching a bullet in Shinso's story. His friend always had good reflexes and reaction time, but it was not that good. Something wasn't adding up.
"What are you going to do?" Dark Shadow asked. It was a question that Fumikage had been asking himself after Shinso finished his story.
'I want to hear his side first before doing anything drastic,' Fumikage answered.
Izuku was his best friend. He didn't want to do anything that would ruin their friendship, but he didn't know if he could be quiet about this. Vigilantism is a serious crime. Multiple times in the past, criminals were able to avoid prison because a vigilante stopped them.
Not to mention the multiple deaths of innocent civilians and villains.
But this was Izuku. His friend would never stoop to something like murder. That was a line he would never cross. At least, he hoped he wouldn't.
The elevator opened, and the two friends walked to their friend's room. They walked in and saw Izuku with the upper half of his gown off and ice wrapped around his right shoulder.
"Hey, guys," Izuku greeted.
Tsu was instantly at his side, checking his shoulder and arm. Fumikage stayed back by the door. While Tsu doted over Izuku, the two boys shared a knowing look.
"What happened?" Tsu asked. The worry in her voice was palpable.
"I-I fell out of a tree and landed on a rock," Izuku admitted. Tsu gave him an unimpressed look.
"Why were you in a tree? You said you were sick, ribbit."
"I kinda lied so I could go to a con."
The room was silent for a moment. Izuku looked embarrassed while Tsu had the aura of a disappointed mother. It filled the whole room, and Fumikage felt a great shame because of it.
"Izuku," Tsu finally sighed, and Izuku hung his head.
"I know," Izuku said.
Tsu didn't need to say anything, Izuku understood by the tone of her voice. It was easier for him to surrender to Tsu and take accountability now than have her lecture him and take accountability later. It was a fight he knew he couldn't win.
Tsu smiled softly as she pulled Izuku in for a hug, being extra cautious of his injuries.
"I don't like seeing you in the hospital. I hate it when you get hurt, ribbit."
Izuku used his non-injured arm to rub her back. It caused her to let out a few calming croaks. The two pulled apart, but Izuku still held on to her hand.
"The doctor said I'll be fine in a few weeks, but what about you guys? Did any of those villains hurt you?"
Tsu gave him a puzzled look while Fumikage remained stoic.
"How did you know villains attacked us?" Tsu asked.
Izuku first looked panicked before pointing at the muted TV. It showed a news report of the Yomiuri Giants beating the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks.
"I-I saw on the news th-that your school was attacked at the USJ."
Things calmed down after that. Tsu sadly nodded and held a hand over her stomach. She grimaced from the phantom pain caused by the wounds the villains gave her.
"Yeah, it was our class," Tsu said solemnly. "They came out of nowhere and separated most of us around the USJ. I was sent to the flood zone along with two others, ribbit."
"You were lucky to have been sent there. It sounds like that place is full of water."
Tsu nodded, but Izuku could see the pain in her eyes.
"It was, but it was also infested with villains with aquatic quirks. I held my own against some of them, but there were too many of them, and I had to look after the others I was with," Tsu said.
She then lifted her shirt, and Izuku became a blushing mess. Fumikage lightly blushed as he joined his friend by looking away from Tsu. It took some time, but Izuku eventually took a peek at his girlfriend's stomach. He was able to see all of the faint scars on her skin.
"If it weren't for Koda asking all the fish in the water to hold the villains while we escaped then I don't know what would've happened to us," Tsu finished, and Izuku saw some tears brimming in his girlfriend's eyes.
He pulled her in for another hug, and he felt her crying on his shoulder. He rubbed her back to make her feel better but also let her know he was there for her.
"You're safe now. No one's going to hurt you here," Izuku whispered in her ear.
None of the boys had ever seen their friend in such an emotional state. She was always the rock of their trio. Seeing her act so vulnerable left them uneasy.
"I know I'm studying to be a hero and that I will have to fight villains in the future, but I was so scared," Tsu admitted while wiping away her tears. "This hasn't swayed me. I still want to be a hero, but this made me realize how dangerous being a hero really is, ribbit."
Izuku nodded and gave his girlfriend another pat on the back.
"It's a good thing you realized this now. The glitz and glamor make us forget that heroes risk their lives every day to keep us safe. Being afraid is normal, and I bet every hero has been scared before they fought a villain once. It doesn't make you weak for saying it."
Tsu pulled Izuku in for another hug. When they pulled apart, their eyes lingered on each other for a few extra seconds. Dark Shadow thought they were going to kiss, but Tsu backed away before anything could happen. They weren't there yet.
Tsu gave a small smile and did her best to clean herself up.
"Thanks, Izuku," she said, and Izuku nodded. Tsu then looked at the TV and frowned. "If it was on the news, then I bet my family would want to see if I'm alright. Sorry I can't stay longer."
Izuku raised his hand to show that he didn't mind. Tsu nodded and moved to leave. She stopped by the door and looked toward Fumikage, silently asking if he was going to join her. He shook his head.
"I'm gonna stay and talk with Izuku for a bit."
Tsu nodded to his response and left the room. Dark Shadow emerged from Fumikage and peeked into the hallway. Once he saw the elevator door close behind Tsu, he snaked his way back into the room, closing the door behind him. Now, it was just the two of them.
The two boys remained silent. Fumikage walked to the foot of the bed, maintaining eye contact with his friend. Dark Shadow emerged from behind Fumikage. He tried to look as menacing as possible to get Izuku to crack.
Izuku didn't flinch. He remained stoic as if challenging his friend to make the first move. Fumikage faltered a little but maintained eye contact. He wouldn't break no matter what.
Izuku must have sensed this because he looked him over before closing his eyes.
"So…" Izuku finally spoke. Fumikage waited on bated breath, wondering what his friend was going to say. "Did you also injure your shoulder in the fall, or did you get lucky?"
Fumikage had to pause for a second to process what he said. Once he did, he placed a hand over his chest.
"Fractured ribs, but Recovery Girl healed them right up," Fumikage answered, and Izuku nodded.
"You're lucky to have one of the best recovery heroes as a nurse," he then gestured to his surrounding area and bandages. "I can't say the same."
Fumikage groaned and slammed his hand on the footboard.
"Enough, you know why I'm here! Why are you a vigilante!?" Fumikage yelled.
Izuku shot up with a panicked expression. He cringed from the pain but still managed to shush him.
"Keep your voice down. It's not something I want the whole hospital to hear," Izuku said. Fumikage was unimpressed by his friend's attempt at a joke. Izuku didn't speak again until he was sure no nurses were coming to check on them. He eased himself back into his bed, getting into a comfortable position to alleviate the pain in his shoulder. "And how did you know I'm a vigilante?"
"I recognized your hair when your hood fell, and the fake voice you used was the same one you use when you tell scary stories or mimic someone with a deep voice," Fumikage answered and Izuku groaned.
"I should ask Echo to work on something to fix that," Izuku quietly muttered to himself.
Fumikage furrowed his brows. He didn't like that his friend was trying to avoid his question.
"Don't ignore what I said. Why are you a vigilante?" Fumikage asked, not bothering to hide the frustration in his voice. Dark Shadow shared his host's frustration and hovered in front of Izuku's face. He glared directly into Izuku's soul, and the green-haired boy was uncomfortable by the act.
Izuku pushed the shadow quirk away, and Fumikage called him back to give his friend some space. Izuku then took a deep breath and pointed at the scar on his forehead. Fumikage was confused as to what it had to do with him being a vigilante.
"I got this when I saved a woman," Izuku said, and Fumikage still had no clue why his friend brought it up. "After I got out of the hospital, I had this unexplainable feeling welling up inside me. It wasn't until I saved someone else that I truly understood what that feeling was. I like to save people."
"Then why not become a hero?" Fumikage asked. Saving people was a noble cause that every hero did. If Izuku wanted to save people, then he should've tried becoming a hero. It would've been easier and legal.
Izuku rolled his eyes as he groaned.
"It's because of the ranking," Fumikage paused and gave his friend a puzzled look. "When the ranking system was announced, it became less about saving people and more about being number one. Because once you're number one, you get all the brand deals, and everyone wants your merch."
"You're saying that you don't want heroes to make money?" Fumikage hesitantly asked, and Izuku shook his head.
"No, they should still get paid. They should earn enough so they could worry more about saving people and not if they're able to pay rent or wonder if they'll be able to eat that night," Izuku explained.
"Then what's the problem with the ranking?"
Izuku scowled as he gripped his blanket. He was taking some deep breaths, and Fumikage saw a stray tear fall from his eye. His friend wiped it away and did his best to hold it together.
"A lot of things, but this is my biggest gripe. The moment you care more about moving up in the rankings than saving people, especially when you know their lives are in danger, is the moment you stop being a hero."
The room fell silent once again. The only sound that either of them heard was the short rigid breathing from Izuku. Fumikage could see his friend struggling to hold back his tears. He didn't know what to say, but even if he did, he didn't think it would help.
Izuku rubbed his eye and stared out the window. It was clear he didn't want Fumikage to see him like this.
"Look, I don't want to talk about this right now," Izuku started before taking a deep breath. "But if you still want to know, then meet me at Takoba Municipal Beach tomorrow night around eleven. But if you don't and want to stop being friends, I understand. It was great being your friend for all these years."
Fumikage backed away from the bed. He wanted to stay, but he knew his friend wanted to be alone. So, he decided to leave. But before he left the room, Fumikage had one more thing to say.
"Another reason why I knew it was you was because you protected Tsu," Fumikage said, and Izuku perked up. "You said we had the element of surprise, but you threw that away when you saw she was in danger. You're the only person I know who would risk their life to save hers."
Fumikage left the room to give his friend the privacy he needed. Besides, he had to get home. Not only to let his parents know he was alright, but he also had a lot to think about.
Author's note: Once again, sorry for being away from this story for so long. I'll try to make this arc as long as I can, which should be easy because I'm combing both the Sport's Festival arc and the Hero Killer arc.
Also, regarding DigiRonpa and anything connected to it, I will continue it I just want to finish the current arc for Sunny on Ice. I'm almost done with it so I will be getting back to DigiRonpa soon.
