Disclaimer: I do NOT own The Legend of Korra or anything related to it.
Author's Note: This is a quick drabble that popped into my head after awhile of writer's block. I recently finished the show and have not read any of the comics so if anything feels missing, that's probably why. Hope you enjoy it anyway.
"You are my best friend as well as my lover, and I do not know which side of you I enjoy the most. I treasure each side, just as I have treasured our life together."
― Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook
"Let's go on a vacation, just the two of us."
Asami had been thinking aloud when she suggested a vacation, but Korra's enthusiastic agreement and encouragement was a pleasant surprise.
Both of them were tired, and they hadn't had a moment alone together since the war with Kuvira ended. It had been a long few weeks of focusing on business and recovery, not to mention the wedding they recently attended.
So when Asami noticed Korra off to the side talking with Tenzin, she seized her chance for a few moments alone with the other woman, hoping Tenzin would forgive her for the lie she made up to get him to leave. Then Korra was persuading her into spending more than a few moments together, so she seized the chance.
Republic City would be fine without them for a little while. The Avatar needed a break and so did her companion. Asami wanted to get away from the reminders of her father's death, from the stress of her job. Getting to spend time with someone she was close to and exploring the Spirit World like she had wanted for so long made that better.
Here they were hours later, changed and packed with supplies, approaching the portal.
A strange feeling bubbled in Asami's chest. Previously, she thought of the Spirit World with excitement and though no negative feelings replaced that, it was a different feeling nonetheless…
Peace. That was it. Something she hadn't felt for longer than she could remember. That wasn't to say she was miserable all the time, but this particular feeling of peace felt foreign, like the stress from recent events was fading. She smiled as she pondered this, and when she looked to Korra, she saw a similar expression on the Avatar's face.
Korra needed this as much as Asami did; going through this together made it better.
As they continued to approach the portal, that feeling of peace grew and Asami's hand moved of its own accord toward Korra's. As if sensing the movement, Korra reached for her hand as well, and their fingers entwined naturally. Asami found her excitement returning, now equal to the peace she felt.
This was truly happening. She was going to the Spirit World with Korra, the two of them as she now realized they had both wanted since Korra's return to Republic City.
'They paused as they entered the portal, both hands now joined whilst they gazed at one another, understanding and excitement and joy filling them. But more than that…there was love.
They were together, happy, safe, and everything would be alright. No matter what, they had each other, and that was enough now for both of them.
