Disclaimer: I own nothing except the current gender bender for Frances and any alterations to the original storyline plot this creates to various readers amusement everywhere across the globe.
A Woman's Game Chapter 11
For every day afterward from sunup to sundown, rain or shine, Mr. Campbell was working through Francis. He put her through intense training and workouts to prepare her both mentally and physically for what the U.S. Open probably has in store for her and all the other competitors entering the game.
Finally, the day came for the U.S. Open Qualifying Round. If Francis doesn't get a certain score on this then she can very well kiss her chances of ever stepping foot in the U.S. Open as a ranking Amateur competitor goodbye.
A fellow employee friend from her days working in the Country Club is acting as her caddie. They've known each other for a good long while so she trusts him implicitly.
They are currently standing on one of the few final holes.
Checking the scores and placements, Francis inquired "Billy, where do we stand?"
"Cut line's 76," said Billy. "Six holes to make up four shots."
That's a bit challenging, but nothing she can't handle.
It most certainly isn't the second the golf ball drops into that hole. Francis recovers the ball, ignoring the cheers and applause from the small building crowd.
There it's done. In order to keep her nerve Francis hadn't been paying much attention to where her overall score was heading. She didn't want the data to seep its way into her head and mess with her. The kind of stuff almost ruined her during the tryouts for her last competition at the 1912: National Amateur Championship. She wasn't going to permit them to rattle her here.
Francis is about to learn whether or not the gamble and all her hard work have paid off entirely.
Walking off the field Francis then runs into Mr. Campbell and Mr. Hastings already there waiting patiently for her. You see they'd been trailing after her for the entire course with the same blank and emotionless faces they're wearing now, not giving anything away.
Now that Francis is allowing the outside world to briefly make its way back in it's a little unnerving.
Worried by the outlook, Francis said "What is it? What's wrong?"
"You just made six straight birdies," said Mr. Hastings, an awed and impressed grin breaking over his face.
In disbelief, not sure she heard him correctly the first time, Francis said "I did?"
Outstretching a hand to shake with her, proud of her accomplishment, Mr. Campbell said "Congratulations, lass. You're in the Open."
Francis laughs, shaking their hands, and wanting to leap for joy. She's done it! She's qualified for the U.S. Open. This is a dream come true that Francis thought she was never going to get.
This is life-changing for her in more ways than one.
The first hurdle is passed and in it a whole new arrangement arises.

Stay safe everyone. Especially with all of these crazy natural disasters occurring a lot lately due to global warming and climate change everywhere for sure. I swear it's like they're getting worse and worse all the time and it's like officials are simply just ignoring it or pretending it doesn't exist entirely just to go on with their daily lives. Especially those in multi-million dollar companies that rely on certain elements of our planet that we rely on to naturally keep us safe instead of adapting and finding new safer ways to keep in business. There are so many options out there where they can adapt, but they just refuse to see it because all they care about is money. Climate change is altering so much faster than anyone can really keep track of.
So, in light of all this, it is important to live life to the fullest as much as anyone can.
I know I am. ;) See you guys next time.
