"What, what just happened?" Willow questioned, staring at the prone body on the floor.
"Buffy made a wish and a demon said wish granted." Cordelia answered, also staring at her boyfriend. "Does this mean Buffy turned Xander into a vampire?"
"I didn't, a demon did!" Buffy protested. "He was being so mean!"
"Nothing he said was a lie, Buffy." Giles informed her. "And you're so busy thinking about yourself, you've managed to forget that I was tortured for hours by Angelus. You have no respect for me or the job I do or any of us, for that matter. As for Xander," he cautiously approached the body, "it appears a vengeance demon granted Buffy's wish." He touched his fingers to Xander's neck and then frowned
"What is it, Giles?" Willow asked anxiously. "What's she done to Xander?!"
"He has a pulse." Giles answered. "If he's been turned into a vampire, it's not an immediate transformation. Buffy, we need to get him into the book cage and empty it of weapons, I just hope whatever's been done to him is reversible."
"There's a way to stop being a vampire?" Cordelia asked, as she helped Willow and Giles remove the weapons and a subdued Buffy picked up Xander.
"No, not in the usual course of things, at least as far as I know. But if we can figure out which vengeance demon that girl was, we may be able to summon her and make her undo it. In the meantime, we need to keep an eye on Xander and hope he doesn't wake up a monster."
"Angel's not a monster!" Buffy protested.
"Only because a curse ripped a soul out of wherever it was and stuffed it in a dead body to cage the demon." Giles retorted. "Now Angel has a choice whether he's a monster or not, all other vampires have no soul to cage the demon running the body and are monsters. If Xander's in the process of becoming such a vampire, than he's becoming a monster. And all because you hid Angel's return from us. It feels like a betrayal, Buffy. To all of us. And the fact that you were kissing him tells me Willow is right, you can't be objective where Angel is concerned. Angelus fooled you several times, he could be fooling you again. Once again you're willingly risking people's lives for him and I can't support you in this."
"Giles, I love him." Buffy protested.
"If he's Angel, than you're being selfish, if he's Angelus, than you're being foolish. Either way, once this business with the Glove of Myneghan is concluded, I'll be running some tests on him, if he proves to be Angel, than he leaves Sunnydale and never comes back. If he proves to be Angelus, than I'll destroy him."
"You're not even going to give him a chance?!" Buffy demanded.
"What do you think the tests are, Buffy?" Giles glared at her. "They are his chance! And it's only because you care that I'm doing them, given the curse and his track record, I should err on the side of caution and just destroy him."
"And if Xander becomes a vampire?" Willow asked. "Will you destroy him too or give me a chance to do the soul curse again?"
"Xander won't want you to do that, Willow." Cordelia protested. "He thinks the curse is evil and I can't blame him for thinking that, you looked like you were possessed when you did it. For all we know, you were, you were saying things in some language I've never heard before and your eyes were black."
"I believe Xander is correct about the curse, it's not remotely helpful." Giles agreed. "But for now Xander is still alive, all we can do is wait and see what happens. I'll start researching known vengeance demons and try to find the one who granted the wish."
"Angel has the Glove." Buffy reminded Giles. "I trust him to destroy it, he's working on it right now."
"You may trust him, but none of the rest of us do." Cordelia glared at her. "And Xander may be color blind and fashion challenged but he's going to care if he doesn't have a reflection and craves blood when he wakes up and that's on you!"
"And maybe he'll stop being so irrationally hateful toward Angel!" Buffy insisted. "If he understands what it's like for Angel."
"Xander's feelings aren't irrational, Buffy." Cordelia glared at her "Both as Angel and Angelus he's done bad things. Angel gave you up for dead when the Master killed you and you treated Xander like crap over it. We all have reason to be afraid, you weren't here in the library when Drusilla attacked us and killed Kendra, you were letting yourself be fooled again. Angel's too afraid to be of any use and Angelus is insane, it's too dangerous for you to be around him, you can't keep your lips off him! Take the chance Giles is giving you and be grateful he's not going straight to throwing more fire at him! Because of you I might loose my boyfriend, haven't enough people died because you decided to get involved with a vampire under a curse?!"
"I didn't know the curse could be broken, Ms. Calendar didn't tell us!"
"All she knew is her family cast it, she didn't know anything else and you and Giles knew about the curse long before Ms. Calendar came here, you should've checked into it yourselves!"
"Enough!" Giles yelled. "This is a pointless conversation and I need to start researching. Buffy, you and Willow go help Angel destroy that damnable Glove, right now I don't trust you or Angel. Cordelia, you can help me research."
The three girls nodded and Willow reluctantly followed Buffy out of the library while Giles headed into the shelves and pulled several books out. "We can start with these books, they list several known vengeance demons."
"There's different kinds?"
"Hundreds and they each have a speciality. That girl said she could feel Buffy's scorn, that might be a clue as to which vengeance demon, a female who feels when a human feels scorned or is scorning someone else. It's an odd word for her to use, but it's the only clue we've got."
Cordelia nodded and took a seat at the table where she could see Xander, what was happening to him?
