Magnolia Dolittle Chapter 3
Following a short yet intimate breakfast with her father, Magnolia goes through her morning routine of feeding the estate residents who live outside on the grounds with Wolfe.
By the time they return, it's close to luncheon and they find Dr. Dolittle in the middle of his daily chess match with the mountain gorilla Chee-Chee.
For these games' mice are used with small wooden carved figures of chess pieces strapped to their heads. Because of Chee-Chee's shy nature, these sessions are mostly filled with him covering himself with his favorite security blanket and trying to crawl away each time Dr. Dolittle does something even remotely scary on the board.
This time is no exception.
Magnolia enters with a tray of tea in hand, almost dropping it when she sees Chee-Chee practically mooning the mice as they try to take cover with his butt in the air.
"Chee-Chee, put your butt down. You're going to give the mice heart attacks," scolded Magnolia, reproachfully.
Chee-Chee whimpers, removing the blanket from his head, obeying her reluctantly.
Magnolia sets the tea down and leaves the room to continue the rest of her daily chores with Wolfe.
No sooner do they exit than they are running back inside upon hearing Chee-Chee's terrified shrieking.
By the time they re-enter the drawing room, everyone is in a tizzy, the majority scrambling all over the place.
"What's going on," demanded Magnolia.
Stefano, a male peacock, said "There's a human outside!"
Grouchily, Dr. Dolittle said "It's not good. As far as I'm concerned Maggie and I are the only humans here. Just ignore them."
Peeking outside the window, Jip, a lurcher, said "There's no getting past a Kalahari snare, Doc. It's an ingenious design. I think you just caught yourself a boy."
Nodding, Wolfe said "Jip's right. It most definitely appears to be a boy caught in one of the traps."
"Let me see. Wait, I don't want to see," said Chee-Chee, panicking, covering his head with his massive biceps. "Just make it go away."
"Deep breaths, Doc. Dab-Dab's got your back," said Dab-Dab, a duck with a metal leg.
Tapping the glass on her side of the window outside with her beak, excitedly, blue and yellow macaw, Poly said "Don't be afraid, John. It's just a boy. This is an opportunity."
Disagreeing immensely, Dr. Dolittle said "Oh, this is a nightmare!"
Rolling her eyes at his immaturity, Magnolia said "Try to calm him down, everybody. I'm going to go greet our guest."
"This boy is not a guest, he's a trespasser," declared Dr. Doolittle, disagreeably.
This is going to be interesting.
Haven't had a visitor here in quite some time.
Oh pooh….the Manor is a mess.
Magnolia really wishes people would have the manners to announce themselves before arrival.
That way she at the very least has some time to prepare.
