14 hours
The first hour
The keys jingle as Maddie unlocks her front door, feeling the presence of the man who continuously drove her crazy behind her. Wary, she steps over the threshold, ready to tell him off. She needs the rest. She couldn't rest with him around. He doesn't take the hint, though.
Instead, he follows her inside like it's the most normal thing in the world. Like there's nothing wrong with it. Of course, he had been there almost every night for the past three weeks. He didn't see it as anything other than a habit. She watches as he begins to take off his jacket and shakes her head.
"David, no. I want to be alone. We've had a long week with late nights at the office. Not to mention the late nights here."
The smirk on his face tells her that it was the wrong thing to say. Innuendo. Everything was innuendo with them. She didn't do it on purpose. It just happened with him. It certainly wasn't professional. Then again, nothing about sleeping with your employee was very professional. How in the world did she get herself into this situation?
"Are you tired?" he asks.
His voice is soft and husky, just the way she likes it.
"Yes. I need sleep."
"Okay, so we'll sleep."
He still wasn't getting the message, or he refused to take it in.
"Alone," she says.
She watches as a frown marred his features. He takes a step forward towards her and she immediately takes a step back. It was their dance. Push and pull. Parry and thrust.
He licks his lips and she tries to not focus on it. Of course, she fails. The way his tongue wettened his luscious mouth.. you simply had to watch. He notices her gaze.
"Are you sure?" he asks her.
Yes… No… she didn't know… She wasn't sure about anything when he was around. Which was why he needed to leave.
"I'll see you on Monday", she says with vehement determination.
"So there's no time for a night cap, then?"
He is incorrigible, but she encourages it. Her hot and cold attitude would make him try over and over again. Until she gives in. She always gives in and he knows it.
"No time," she repeats.
She drops her bag on a side table, breaking eye contact with him. She isn't strong enough when she looks at him.
"Maddie…"
She hears him approach, stopping only a foot away from her. He hooks a finger underneath her chin, making her look at him.
"Go home, David. Take the car."
Her voice is strong. Good. Not at all like the weak mess she is inside.
"Why do you always do this?" he enquires.
Her chin is still in his grip, though it's a soft grip. She could choose to pull away at any time. Only, his thumb begins to softly stir her skin there. The feeling it provokes reminds her of the one time in her life that she had stepped onto a roller coaster. The part where your stomach drops the moment the coaster speeds over a hump. That feeling prevents her from ever setting foot onto a roller coaster again. Yet, here she was. Enjoying said feeling.
"Do what?"
She acts like she doesn't know what he's talking about, but she does.
His thumb is now moving upward, until it softly pulls her bottom lip back.
Dear god…
"Pretend like you don't want this."
His voice is pure sex now, there was no other way to describe it.
"Like I said, David, I need to sleep."
"And who ever said that I wasn't going to let you sleep?"
"Because you never do."
A dangerous glint passes his eyes right now. Maddie finds herself drawn to it, like a moth to a flame. His hand leaves her chin, his fingers walking their way towards the back of her neck. He grabs it and rubs his thumb, once, right along the skin beneath her hair, and she's somewhat horrified to hear her breath catch and moan.
Bastard.
Her hands shoot up and she places them on his chest, as a way to push him off. She doesn't push, though. His skin burns through his shirt. She feels his body heat on the palms of her hands and it distracts her. He picks up one of her hands and brings it to his mouth. One by one, he kisses each digit and Maddie finds herself lost in his actions. Then, he slips one of her fingers into his mouth. His mouth is shockingly warm. The tugging sensation of his suckling makes her womb clench in need. Yes, this has definitely gone too far. Again. She pulls the finger out and over his lower lip, brushing it.
He has her now and he knows it.
His stare is intent with his actions, trapping her in his gaze, as he leaves her face all together. Instead, his hands focus on her blouse. She can feel the buttons being undone… button by button. Just to drive her crazy.
The cold air in the house prickles her now exposed flesh and goosebumps rise steadily.
"God, you're beautiful," he breathes, dropping the seductive mode for a second. The way he's in awe of her gets her every time.
They had yet to kiss and yet, Maddie finds herself ready. Within a few measly minutes, he has reduced her to a quivering heap.
He takes the final step it takes to close the small space between them and pulls her into him. His nose brushes hers as if he's still testing the waters. As if she is able to walk away now. Then, his mouth slants over hers.
As it always is between them, the heat flares up immediately. No soft kissing, no petting, no sweet nothings. Just pure passion exploding. It's intoxicating and something Maddie hasn't experienced in any past relationship.
It's all hands grabbing and pulling, trying to get as close as humanly possible. It always knocks the wind out of her.
Clothes are strewn left and right as they make their way up the stairs towards her bedroom.
"Maddie, Maddie, Maddie."
His voice is low and barely reaches her lust-filled, fogged up brain. She merely clutches his shoulders as he finally makes them one again, for about the fiftieth time in three weeks. Okay, she may be overreacting, but it feels like they were constantly doing this. Always this. It drives her crazy.
His rhythm is deep and demanding and she likes it. It's like she doesn't know where he begins and she ends. He owns her in here. He makes her lose control, again and again. High C's leave her lips, as a gut feeling broils in her stomach. It's intense as it swirls around, creating a vortex that goes higher and higher until finally, her body snaps. It feels like she's falling forever, being pushed over the edge and into the abyss. When it does eventually end, she slips off into a deep sleep…
The fifth hour
It's dark when Maddie opens her eyes, and it takes her a few minutes to become aware of her surroundings. She's in her bed, but not alone. He's there again. She has let him in. Again.
She's on her side and she feels him behind her. His arm is heavy around her midsection, while his breathing is deep and even. Her behind is resting in his groin area, making her all too aware of how she has succumbed to him. She carefully removes his arm and tries to wriggle out of his hold. Sadly, it instantly wakes him up. In more ways than one.
"Where are you going?" he mumbles sleepily, his arm firmly back in place.
"I was going to… I didn't know you were awake."
"I am now," he whispers, proving his point by softly pushing his pelvis into her.
That man was insatiable.
"Would you give me a moment?" she snaps at him.
"You had a moment," he retorts.
Ever the wit well, he was.
"Not now, David! I need to use the restroom."
"Okay then."
He releases her and she instantly flies into the bathroom. After switching the light on, she stares at herself in the mirror. She looks well loved, she has to give herself that. Her hair is wild around her head, her cheeks are rosy and her eyes are bright. There is this glow around her. Then why does it clash with her inner emotions so much? Why is she fighting him?
She takes a moment to freshen up and slip into her robe, before stepping back into the bedroom. What she sees there surprises her; David has lit a few candles and there is food. Bread, strawberries, cheese… you name it.
"What did you do?" she asks him, as he sits on the bed in nothing but his boxershorts.
"I thought you might be hungry. We didn't exactly eat when we came home, now did we?"
The prove his point, Maddie's stomach embarrassingly growls at the sight in front of her. A blush crosses her features as she slips beneath the covers.
"I didn't know I had strawberries," Maddie mumbles.
"Yep. Found them in the fridge. They look good enough."
He picks one up and holds it in front of her lips.
"Eat," he orders.
She bites into the soft flesh and juice drizzles onto her chin. It tastes heavenly, though.
"Here, you have a little something…" David trails off as he leans forward. He licks the sweet nectar right off her chin in a long, warm stroke of his tongue. "Right there," he finishes his sentence with a grin.
The glee on his face warms her heart and she reluctantly reveals a small smile.
"I've never eaten in bed before," she says. "Think of the crumbs."
"I've brought plates."
"Still, I think we need to change the bed after we're done."
"Oh, I definitely think we need to change the bed after we're done," he winks.
Maddie rolls her eyes at him. Such an immature man!
They continue to eat, making small talk about some of the cases they had this past week. Afterwards, David takes the plates and leftover food back downstairs. When he comes back, Maddie is busy contemplating how her life has changed in the course of three years.
"What's that face?" David asks her.
"What face?"
"Well, that face." He taps her on the nose. "What's wrong?"
Maddie sits back up against the headboard and sighs.
"I was just thinking about everything that's happened these past three years."
"And?"
David is on his side next to her, facing her. He's leaning up on his elbow, giving her his full attention.
"I don't know. It's all so different. Sometimes I feel like I don't know what I'm doing. It's a completely different life."
"Hey, you're doing great."
He leans forward to kiss her on her shoulder.
"Thanks. I just miss the stability. Knowing how every day is going to turn out. Not having to worry about anything."
"Sounds pretty boring," David winks at her. "Look, you may not have the financial security you had back then, but you're having fun. You're free to do as you please. There are no rules. I wouldn't give that up for anything."
"Of course, you wouldn't. You thrive on this lifestyle. That's what makes this so unusual," Maddie explains.
"What is unusual?"
"Us. We're different."
"Isn't that a good thing? We fill each other quite nicely," David rebukes.
"Do we, now?"
"Yes."
Maddie crosses her arms in front of her chest.
"What's your favorite color?" she asks.
"What?"
David is confused.
"Just proving a point. What's your favorite color?"
"Uhm red?"
"Aha, there you have it! Mine is blue. Red and blue don't mix. They're fire and ice."
David seems to ponder over this for a moment, before a smug smile erupts on his face.
"They make steam, don't they?"
His voice is back to being husky as he leans in for a kiss. A kiss that quickly spirals out of control again. Before Maddie knows what is happening, David has her sitting in his lap. He's sitting up and pulling at her robe, which falls from her shoulders and reveals her breasts to him. The hunger in his eyes is enough to make her burn for him again.
God, what does that man do to her?
His teeth carefully bite down onto one of her nipples, catching it and keeping it steady, while suckling in earnest.
"Oh, David," she whispers. She's holding his head to her chest, while her hips buckle on their own accord. David notices her rhythm and places his hands on her behind, aiding in her movements.
Too many clothes.
Her robe is quickly discarded, as is his boxershorts. Then, he places her firmly back onto his lap again. He slides into her without restraint, her core so ready that he doesn't have any trouble reuniting them. She rolls her hips into him, mewling when his hands grab onto her and slam her down. For a moment, she thinks the rhythm is going to be demanding again, but then he stops. He gazes into her eyes. She thinks she sees love shining in them, but it hurts her heart and it stops her breathing.
"David, please," she asks, but she doesn't know what she's asking for.
Instead, she tears her gaze away from his and begins to kiss his neck. The rhythm is still slow and sweet, but without his burning gaze, she can take it. He's loving her with everything he can, using every part of his body to make love to her. Sweat trickles down her back as tremors overtake her. It is even more intense than the last time, making her throw back her head. He follows close behind her.
When it's over, a single tear slides down her cheek as he holds her.
"I love you, Maddie," she hears him whisper.
Dear lord, she loved him too. Oh, how she loved him.
"I love you, David."
And just like that, words that she hadn't uttered to him before, tore from her lips like they were unstoppable.
She could almost feel him smile, even if she couldn't see his face in this position….
The ninth hour
"Mmm."
The groan leaves Maddie's lips without thinking. She feels so boneless that she isn't even fighting it anymore. She's on her stomach in bed with David sitting half on top of her, massaging her back. He is definitely spoiling her.
It's morning already and she realizes that he's still here. He has been here for hours on end, in her bed, and she hasn't told him to leave.
In that moment, of course, she can't care less. His hands knead her flesh with expertise as if he's done this a thousand times before. Visions of other women beneath his hands suddenly cloud her vision as Maddie scowls. This is not the time to think about David's previous love life. He was hers now.
Hers…
Now what did that even mean?
"Does that feel good?" David asks her, and Maddie can only moan in reply.
Her eyes almost droop with sleep.
"Maddie?"
"Hmm?"
"I've been thinking… How funny would it be if you and I drove off to Vegas this weekend and made it official?"
Wait… What?!
Maddie's eyes instantly open and she quickly pushes him off her.
His face is relaxed, like he's asking a casual question, but Maddie is no fool.
"Are you insane? I know you and Vegas go together hand in hand and you've probably had an annulment or two in the past, but isn't this a bit out there? Even for you?"
"And no drinking this time too," David jokes. "But yeah, I mean it."
Maddie narrows her eyes and carefully looks at his face, examining him.
"You don't look like you've fallen on your head," she comments.
"We would be good together."
"Would we now? We're barely getting along as is."
"Baby, we're getting along great," David smirks, looking around the bedroom to prove his point.
"David, we've barely started this… this thing that we have. I don't even know how to define it yet."
"Good old Sam asked you after only two nights in town."
"That's different. I've known him for a long time."
"And you know me for a long time as well. Three years, Maddie. We've shared everything together for three years now. There's nothing speedy about it."
"No, David."
David's cheerful smile falls from his face and Maddie feels almost guilty for putting the petulant look there. She feels the need to offer some sort of comfort and puts her hands on his face.
"I wasn't ready with Sam and I'm not ready now. But I guess that doesn't mean that I'll never be ready. Look, can we just… see what this is? For now?"
David nods, looking somewhat less deflated. Yet, the carefree attitude is gone. Maddie wants to make it better and kisses him on the lips. A kiss that, as usual with them, stirs up something more. It isn't long before they are making love again.
The 14th hour
"Do you have everything?" Maddie asks.
"I don't have anything here, Maddie."
He has a point and it feels as if he's snippy about it. Like he wants his belongings here with her. She won't have it, though. She needs her space from him.
"So, I guess I'll see you on Monday."
"Yes, guess so."
They both hover in the door opening for a moment, wanting to say something. As usual with them, they don't talk.
"Well.."
"Well…"
"I'll take the car with me."
"You do that."
He kisses her cheek and walks off, leaving her feeling confused about everything.
