Chapter 1

The little brown haired girl sat on the cushioned seat in the companionway of the sailboat docked at the marina. It was a bright and sunny day. A sweet breeze swept over the harbor. She wore a yellow sundress under a bright orange life vest and a pair of brown sandals on her feet. She no more than five years old and was looking forward to the trip that her father had planned for the pair on his boat, the Loose Goose.

Her father was recently widowed as he lost his wife to cancer. He had dark brown hair, brown eyes and was an avid sailor. He sported tan trousers and a red shirt with brown deck shoes as he secured the supplies and tended to the details. He smiled at his little girl. "Lucy. Lucy Goosey." he teased light hearted.

"Daddy." she looked up while holding the rope obediently.

"You're doing good holding that rope." he assured.

Little Lucy beamed proudly. She was big helper for her father.

He came to her and knelt down beside her and spoke softly. "Ready to cast off?"

"Aye, aye." she replied enthused.

"You stay right here." he instructed. He then started the boat's engine and then tended to the lines.

In short time they were off in the white sailboat with blue stripes. The Loose Goose was on it's way with the two souls onboard for their trip around the world.

A few weeks later

The storm came up fast on the sailboat. A rogue wave overcame the boat and they lost power and were soon taking on water. The father tossed the life raft overboard.

Little Lucy didn't understand what was wrong but something was horribly wrong as her father tied the life jacket that she wore to the life raft. "You stay in the raft no matter what." he instructed.

"Daddy. I'm scared." she pleaded.

"I will be right back." he told her. He left to get supplies as she sat in the raft frightened and alone.

It seemed like forever to Lucy though it was mere moment. Her father returned with the emergency supplies. He placed the box in the raft. He told her. "Stay here. I am going to try one more time to send a mayday." he hollered through the driving rain.

Lightning crashed all around the raft and the sinking sailboat. He disappeared into the boat as yet another huge wave swamped the boat. Lucy felt the raft being tossed about. She held on tight. She peered outside but could not see the boat or her father. She screamed. "Daddy! Daddy!" she could not hear anything over the wind and waves. The life raft was swept away by the waves as little Lucy held on with all her might. She huddled in the raft, crying, scared and alone. Unsure of what became of her father, the boat or what will become of her.

Morning

Lucy woke up still in the raft. She found she was no longer being tossed by the waves. Matter of fact, she didn't seem to be moving much all. She rolled over the peered out the raft. She found she was on a beach. She climbed out of the raft and stood barefoot as the waves gently kissed her toes. She looked about. Everything seemed huge to the child. The palm trees waved back and forth in the tropical breeze. She saw what appeared to be a mountain in the middle of the island. Holding herself tight she walked out of the surf and looked up and down the nearby beach.

"Daddy!" she yelled as loud as she could. She listened. All she heard was birds, the cracking of the swaying palm trees and the waves washing on shore. She yelled again. "Daddy!"

Still no reply. She turned to the life raft. She knew to pull it onto the shore all the way. With all her strength she got the raft on shore. She then removed her life vest. She wore a white t-shirt with a cartoon graphic of a dog with red shorts. She pulled her brown sandals out of the bottom of the raft and slipped her feet in. Still holding herself she made her way about to explore the island.

Lucy wandered about the island and soon came across what looked like a cave entrance. She stood feeling ever so scared and alone. She looked around her. All she found was palm trees, sand and rocks. Slowly she stepped into the mouth of the cave, still holding herself tight. Much to her surprise once she stepped inside interior lights illuminated. She continued to walk wondering where the cave would lead her. She was hungry and tired. She made her way to the end of the cave. She found a smooth gray door before her and reached up with one hand and gently touched it wondering if there was a door knob or handle someplace. The door then hissed as the lock released. It slid into the stone wall revealing a room. As she stepped inside recessed wall lighting illuminated the beige interior. She found no signs of anyone else.

She called out. "Hello! Anyone home?"

She got no answer. She continued to explore. She found room was empty of any furniture. She went to the wall where she found a glass cabinet. The lights inside automatically light up. At first she jumped for she was startled by the sight. Behind the glass sat a large looking dog. It looked like a German Sheppard with brown and black markings on the head and muzzle. She touched the glass. The light inside changed to green and the dog then became active as it titled it's head. She stepped back scared. The glass dropped into the wall.

The dog moved about as it activated. She didn't understand the dog was artificial. She just knew a big dog that looked much like that one before her once tried to bite her so she ran away fearing it would attack her.

She ran down the hallway afraid of the dog. She came to another room. The lights automatically illuminated again. Sitting in the middle of the room was a six foot tall ring with symbols and chevrons that she did not understand. To the child, it looked huge and menacing. Scared for her life she ran deeper into the complex. She came to another room. There was no way out. The lights were brighter. She found only a hole in the gray wall. She came over wondering if maybe she found a way out. She leaned over to look inside and was suddenly grabbed by a set of large hands that pulled her into the hole by the head. She tried to get loose but could not. A bright light was seen as she struggled to free herself. Then she submitted to the information that was being deposited into her young mind. It was overwhelming for the girl. The hands soon released her in mere seconds she pulled herself out of the hole and then promptly fell face first to the floor as she lost consciousness.

Few Hours Later

Lucy woke up on the floor of the Ancient compound hidden in the South Pacific. Her head spun and she felt dizzy. She found she wasn't sure where she was or what she was doing. She pushed herself up from the floor. The dog sat right before as if waiting for her to wake. It then barked.

She didn't know how she knew but she could suddenly understand the artificial intelligence before her. She stated. "Hi."

It barked once again.

She nodded. "Name you?" She had no idea what to call the artificial dog. "Goose." she recalled the name of the boat and the nickname her father gave her.

The name was entered into the processor of the dog. It barked once more to confirm.

Her stomach growled. She realized. "I'm hungry."

The dog turned and barked.

She understood. "Follow you."

The dog then led Lucy through the complex and back to the tunnel. It was now dark outside. She stood at the entrance of the tunnel with Goose the dog. She felt terrified and overwhelmed by the darkness.

The dog barked once more as it scanned the area. The dog's mechanical eyes focused on the life raft and box of supplies. Goose barked again and then took a step ahead of Lucy. He turned his head back and looked upon her.

She understood. "Follow you." She gave a nod, held onto his back and walked with him back to the life raft.

Upon guiding Lucy to the raft, Goose processed what needed to be done to protect his new owner and keep her safe. He nudged the supply box with his nose, then grasped it with his jaw and lifted it from the raft. The dog then used the powerful jaw to open the box. He scanned the contents. Found the food and water and used it's mouth to grasp each packet and hold it for Lucy.

She took the food and water from the dog. "Thanks Goose." she then sat down on the beach with the food and water. She knew Goose didn't need to eat or drink for he was artificial despite how real he seemed. The dog sat right beside her. She opened the packets and nibbled at the emergency food. She then wrapped once arm over Goose's back as the pair scanned the ocean around them.

5 Years Later

Lucy had figured out how to work the smaller Stargate she found on the artificial island. Her head was filled with much information and much of it she did not understand. Her only companion was Goose the dog. She understood Goose was not like a normal dog and was in fact created by an advanced race of humans called the Ancients. But, she loved him regardless and he loved her as much as a real dog could. When she activated Goose, his programming initiated and Lucy was now his one and only owner and master.

At ten years old, Lucy and Goose made quiet the name for themselves off world. She could figure out the dialing address, the celestial drift and even how to receive some radio signals. But her mind was affected by the download from the Ancient repository and she could not remember things very well and she could not figure out how to fix the transceiver to send a message to be rescued from the island. It was her island now. It belonged to she and Goose and that was fine with her.

Lucy and Goose stepped through the much larger Stargate off world as they came to trade for supplies. Lucy could not recall her full name and only briefly remembered her parents and the boating accident. Occasionally, she would get words twisted and mixed up. And every so often a word in Ancient would also cross her lips. She arrived on Chulak to visit her favorite Jaffa, Bra'tac and trade coconuts with the Jaffa. Wearing gray Jaffa robes she and Goose walked down the steps of the Gate carrying a bag full of coconuts. She walked through the Jaffa village looking for her friend. She spied him up ahead speaking with four strangers who all wore green uniforms and black vest and had guns. She approached the strangers for the uniforms looked familiar but she could not recall where she saw the uniforms.

Lucy greeted. "Bra'tac."

Bra'tac stood with SG-1 after exchanging intel. His eyes landed on the sweet child who would bring coconuts to the Jaffa for trade. He gave a soft smile. "Lucy!"

Colonel Jack O'Neill looked down at the child. He guess her age to be around nine or ten years old. He then noticed the dog who walked right beside her rather obediently.

Lucy greeted. "I have trade." She held up the bag.

"Wonderful." Bra'tac praised. He adored little Lucy and wished he could help her more. "You bring the tree seeds."

She dug one out of the bag and held it up for him to inspect. "I have six for trade."

Jack reached down and grasped the coconut. He looked at it. "It's a coconut." he declared. He handed it to his Major, Samantha Carter.

"It's a coconut." she agreed. She looked to Daniel for coconuts were not commonly found off world.

Bra'tac explained. "These tree seeds are very good. The meat inside helps with digestion and the liquid is consumable."

Daniel Jackson was handed the coconut next. He examined it. "Looks fresh off the tree." He handed it to Teal'c.

Teal'c agreed. "Indeed." He handed the coconut to Jack.

Bra'tac stated. "I can offer you some bread and vegetables." He gathered the remained coconuts and handed her another bag to fill. "See Ma'tac for the food."

Lucy took the empty back. She looked at SG-1 debating where she saw the uniforms before. She noticed a patch on the sleeve. She reached her hand up and gently touched the flag patch on Jack's sleeve trying to remember where she saw the symbol.

Jack looked at her. "You like my patch?"

She nodded. "I do like it." She brought her hand back down.

Jack reached over and ripped the patch off. He handed it to the girl. "Keep it. I got plenty."

She grasped the patch as a smile graced her young face. "Can I wear it on my sleeve?" she wondered.

Amused Jack grinned. "Sure kid. Long as it's okay with your parents."

She mentioned. "My parents are dead." She placed the patch in her pocket of the robe.

Sam sympathized. "So sorry you lost them. How are old are you, Lucy?"

"Decems." she replied without realizing she spoke in Ancient.

SG-1 traded glances.

Sam then asked. "What's your dog's name? He's beautiful."

"Goose." she stated.

Daniel stood pondering for Lucy was very American sounding. He recalled how she liked Jack's American flag patch. "Hmm." he wondered to himself.

Jack told her. "I had a dog like that when I was a kid. His name was Tank." he knelt down to the dog's level. He held out a hand for the dog to sniff him.

Goose looked at Lucy and barked once.

"He can pet you." Lucy assured.

The dog than sat and wait for Jack to pet him.

It was the strangest intersection he ever saw between a dog and its owner. Jack gently touched the top of Goose's head.

Goose's programming mimicked a dog enjoying being petted.

Goose felt real to Jack. He seemed to respond, thus Jack figured he must be a well trained dog. Jack was always a dog person. He loved dogs. But this dog was not normal to Jack's estimation. It intrigued him even more.

Bra'tac stated. "I have never seen such an animal before. He's extremely obedient to Lucy. And will protect her at any cost."

Jack soothed. "Good boy, Goose. Goose is a good boy."

Goose's program detected that Jack was genuine in his speech. Thus, Goose licked Jack on the face and hands.

"Okay Goose." he petted the dog. "Down boy." he found Goose was getting too enthused. He stood back up and wiped his hands. He made an observation. The healing scab on the back of his hand from a previous injury was gone and the skin was completely healed. He assumed that wound would take about week or so to heal completely. He looked at the hand rather baffled. "Huh." he wondered.

Lucy stated. "I'm going to go get my food now. Nice meeting you all." She motioned feeling awkward. She turned and walked away to find woman who would give her the food.

SG-1 watched as the child walked away with the dog.

"Odd." Daniel noted to himself.

Jack had to agree. "That's not your normal kid or dog."

Sam looked at Bra'tac. "Where does she live?"

"I do not know." he informed. "She has been trading with us for food for six of your months now. There are legends about her and the dog. I have heard much."

Daniel asked. "Such as?"

"The dog protects, Lucy. She was trading with another Jaffa village. They were suddenly attacked by Ba'al. The dog drove back an entire legion. The child is said to have special abilities."

"Abilities?" Jack asked.

"She is said to be able to move things with her mind. It is said she can deflect staff weapon bolts with her hands. Most mythical of things." he told them.

Sam asked. "Have you seen her or the dog do anything like that?"

"I have not." he stated. "I know so little about the child other than she comes with the tree seeds to trade for food and clothing."

Sam stated. "If she's all alone we need to do something. She could be an orphan."

Jack normally would tell Sam to drop it but the dog was ever so mysterious. He pondered. "She could be. Let's go have a talk with her." he suggested.
