Chapter 15: The Empire Rises Again

Raven sensed danger all around them. It wasn't the drain of their emotions, nor of the demons lurking here nor there. No, it was of regrets that were coming to survive in the few she did trust too much. Her friend. Her teachers.

These…adult children showing their true colors. Dead or alive, fear surrounded every pore as she awoke to seek out a day to retain what was left. Time was ticking as she felt bared to the life of a possible fall. If Robin was here, it meant someone knew she was al –

"Raven…you're up?" Dick was bandaged and healing well. He rubbed his sleepy eyes as she didn't turn to look into his. "R…Robin, we have to –

"I'm sorry." Dick's pitying voice was a lure, she knew it. But…she wanted to feel safe. Slade was a pillar that no longer stood tall enough to ground them. He was nothing but a denied crony. A man with a broken soul. Bruce was a pillar that leaned like John and Clark…Clark was firm but unable to find a perspective of what direction it would turn. Lex was teetering badly; she could sense something was going to happen. Had she said a thing now, they all did. They waited for her to realize the daemon within.

"Robin, come with me."

He didn't shrug off her invitation as they left the walled in hole to seek out the sun for only a few minutes while together.

Bruce had to watch Clark as they both were out on patrol earlier than all the rest to the opposing wall. Clark searched the ground and saw Bruce; John was not there. Neither were Slade or Lex and Vixen.

"I have to search for them."

"Go, I'll stand watch." Bruce nodded as he squinted at the red light coming from the throne that these demons had been rebuilding out of the league's clubhouse. The hall of justice, would accomplish the threat of allowing a demon; the same demon that had plunged this world into darkness, to return to keep his role as overlord of anyone that still walked.

Something was worse though than Slade lilting about having a nerve to cause the demon ill by baiting him with his own daughter and possibly…his bride. If Raven was connected to the human earth, then he could overpower her the old-fashioned way. Slade was wrong to have allowed any of this, yet the guilt, avarice and greed of that stupid mercenary knew no bounds as Bruce swallowed his rage for the mission.

If this was the last trial to take…

Lex scowled silently with a hand to his temple after the twitterpaited two Titan brats. Slade had a soft spot for the priestess. Lex waited to watch for that mega – kill joy, seeing no Superman. Seeing not a Johnny C in sight.

"Raven, talk to me –

"Are you not you?"

She turned to the boy as he turned to the sky. "I came here to help. Why can't you –

"Because!" Raven pushed him off. "I don't know who isn't aware. You were turned to stone. Someone freed you. You didn't just walk here with the urge to help. You're not you-

"Raven!?"

~ Ha!!~ She pushed him back with her power. Keeping a distance as Lex saw his chance to diffuse their suspicious nature. To encourage a scapegoat…

"Is there a fight breaking out? When did you two leave the base? Hey!"

"It's not enough, is it…" Dick gritted his fists and started to shake "You could have believed me. You could have gone home… we could…why won't you let me in??"

"Because." Wilson shoulder from behind the rocky boulders of rubble. Slade was there, his eye tormented as Raven felt her grip weaken while he had but one blade in his pocket.

"Reveal thine face!!"

Dick adjusted his body to swiftly hit the blow away, the but of the blade pushed back. "Raven. He's real." Slade told the other teen. "W…what? No, no. He was brought back…he's not –

"Like me?" Slade cocked a brow and turned to the arrogant brat in his claw. "Richard. You were brought back, but you don't even know who undid that curse on your body. Tell me, were you here to help save the world, or was your motive before much differently put."

"I'm scared, I really am. It's our…the Titans were with you Raven and you had trouble getting that power from us…it wasn't done right, because I…"

Dick's eyes let tears drop freely as Slade let the boy's firearm go. "I was the one who made this all worse! Our fears. All of it…I lost the war for us. Not you."

"What? This war can't happen with a boy bleeding out his heart to a queen of demon hood!" Shouted a riled up tycoon from the sidelines. "I have a job, you have one, so stop feeling damn sorry for something that has already –

Slade gripped the blade and without fail, his aim was not to protect. Ywt to reveal what he had desired to tell Superman in a few short minutes. Screaming out, Lex's eye gushed red flesh and vessels as the parasites he housed soon decided to show their faces from under the man's skinny suit.

"Oh! What….??"

"That is why you wanted to feed, wasn't it? Why not do your master's bidding with someone else in mind?" Slade snipped at the tycoon, as his body remained a host yo many, many elongated demon creatures. ~ We want the princess. We want her well…the kid approaching wishes to bide no longer. He wishes her hand if not then, by force across this plane!! We do as he sees! All seeing is the red God and devil, our Lord…Trigon!!!~

The fate was to one as Dick reeled back and vomited a black ooze with his eyes going black as a pearl lost to time. Raven shouted as he was lifted by a great evil force and Slade did his best to shield her. Shards of red hot the man's side as he never let go again. Even as his real enemy…was deeply in love at one time or another.
