Tim Bradford wasn't one to let things get to him easily, but lately, his relationship with Ashley had been strained. They had been arguing more and more, and the tension between them had reached a boiling point that evening.

He sat across from Ashley in her apartment, his arms crossed, trying to keep his frustration in check. The argument had started small—something about their schedules and how little time they were spending together—but it had quickly escalated, as it always seemed to.

"You're never around, Tim," Ashley snapped, her voice tight with emotion. "I get that your job is important, but you're always with Lucy, or you're working late. When do we get time for us?"

Tim ran a hand through his hair, trying to stay calm. "Ashley, you know my job is demanding. And yes, I spend a lot of time with Lucy, but she's my partner. It's work, not a choice."

"It sure doesn't feel that way," Ashley shot back. "Sometimes it seems like you'd rather be with her than with me."

Tim frowned, his patience wearing thin. "That's not fair, and you know it. Lucy and I have a professional relationship. You're the one I'm with."

"Then why does it feel like I'm always playing second fiddle?" Ashley's voice cracked, revealing the hurt beneath her anger. "I see the way you look at her, Tim. You're different with her. More open, more relaxed. Like you're actually happy."

Tim opened his mouth to argue, but the words died in his throat. Ashley's accusation struck a nerve, not because he felt it was true, but because it forced him to confront the complexities of his relationship with Lucy. He cared about her, deeply, but he had always believed it was purely platonic. Yet, hearing it from Ashley made him question himself in ways he wasn't prepared to deal with.

"Ashley, this is ridiculous," Tim finally said, though his voice lacked conviction. "I'm here, aren't I? I'm trying to make this work."

"But are you really?" Ashley's eyes were filled with doubt. "Or are you just going through the motions because it's easier than admitting you're not fully invested in us?"

Tim felt his frustration mounting. "I'm here because I care about you, Ashley. But this constant jealousy over Lucy—it's exhausting. She's my partner. That's all."

Ashley shook her head, her expression one of resignation. "I don't know if I can do this anymore, Tim. I don't want to be the one always wondering if I'm enough for you."

Tim was about to respond when his phone buzzed in his pocket. Normally, he would have ignored it, focusing on the argument at hand, but something compelled him to check it. When he saw the text message from Lucy, his heart sank.

I need you, Tim.

The words were simple, but they carried a weight that Tim couldn't ignore. He didn't know what had happened, but the urgency in her message was clear.

Ashley noticed the change in his expression and her face hardened. "Let me guess, it's Lucy."

Tim looked up, conflicted. "Ashley, she needs me. Something's wrong."

"Of course she does," Ashley said bitterly. "It's always her, isn't it?"

"Ashley, I can't just ignore this," Tim said, standing up. He knew this wasn't the time to argue about Lucy, not when she clearly needed his help. "I have to go."

Ashley stared at him for a long moment, and then she sighed, her shoulders slumping in defeat. "Go, Tim. But remember this moment the next time you wonder why we're not working out."

Tim didn't have time to respond. He grabbed his jacket and headed for the door, his mind already on Lucy and what could have possibly gone wrong. As he left Ashley's apartment, he felt a pang of guilt, knowing that this was likely the final nail in the coffin of their relationship. But right now, all he could think about was getting to Lucy.

He drove through the city with a sense of urgency, replaying the brief text in his mind. I need you. Lucy was strong, independent, and rarely asked for help. For her to reach out like this meant something was seriously wrong.

When he finally pulled up outside the spot where they had agreed to meet, he saw Lucy standing alone on the sidewalk, her arms wrapped around herself as if trying to hold herself together. Tim's heart broke at the sight of her—she looked lost, vulnerable in a way he'd never seen before.

He parked the car and rushed over to her. "Lucy," he said softly, touching her arm. "What happened?"

She looked up at him, her eyes red and swollen from crying. "Tim…everything's a mess. Chris…he…"

Tim's chest tightened as he listened to her halting words. He gently guided her to the passenger seat of his car, helping her in before sitting beside her. "Take your time, Lucy. I'm here."

Lucy took a deep breath, trying to steady herself, but when she spoke, her voice trembled with the weight of what she had just been through. "I told Chris about the baby. He accused me of cheating on him—with you."

Tim's eyes widened in shock. "What? Lucy, that's insane. You and I—we haven't—"

"I know," Lucy interrupted, her voice breaking. "But he didn't believe me. He said he couldn't trust me…and then he broke up with me."

Tim felt a surge of anger and protectiveness. How could Chris accuse her of something like that? And how could he just walk away from her when she needed him the most?

"Lucy, I'm so sorry," Tim said, his voice full of sincerity. He reached out and took her hand, offering her the comfort she so desperately needed. "You didn't deserve that. None of this is your fault."

Lucy's tears began to fall again, and Tim pulled her into a gentle embrace. She cried against his chest, letting out all the pain, fear, and confusion she'd been holding in. Tim held her tightly, his heart aching for her, wishing he could take away her pain.

As they sat there, the weight of everything that had happened began to settle in. Tim knew that his relationship with Ashley was likely over, but at that moment, it didn't matter. The only thing that mattered was Lucy, and being there for her in her time of need.

"Whatever happens, Lucy," Tim whispered, his voice steady despite the storm of emotions inside him. "You're not alone. I'm here for you, no matter what."

Lucy pulled back slightly, looking up at him with tear-filled eyes. "Thank you, Tim. I don't know what I'd do without you."

Tim gave her a small, reassuring smile. "You don't have to find out. We'll get through this together."
