VOLTRON
'I've been impaled'
That was the first thought that had ran through Keith's mind, which was quite ironic assuming the mission details.
'It's an easy mission' Shiro had said
'It'll take you less than four vargas' Coren had reasoned
'We'll protect each other' Lance had exclaimed
Well…maybe they were protecting each other, but Keith being himself had been bound to mess that up. And truthfully, he hadn't meant to get severely injured.
But it had just happened
Without warning even
It had started when Keith had been assigned to cover Pidge – who was gathering essential intel – and although many had assumed that was an easy job to finish. It was quite far from the truth.
There were a lot of Glara soldiers, many of which, it was apparent that they had increased their training and skill level from their last encounter. And although it was a little impressive, it also made Keith's job a whole lot harder than it was supposed to be.
To top it all off, he also had to protect Pidge, who was defenseless at the moment
He really had to stop making a habit of this
But Keith was never really one to admit when he needed help. And it certainly wouldn't have started then.
So, he fought all the Glara soldiers single handedly, with no heart and all mind. Pidge needed him to cover her, and he wasn't one to shy away from keeping promises.
Keith knew how it felt to have a promise broken and didn't want to inflict that burden upon his fellow team members.
Naturally, there is where all his courage had come in. But his courage often gave him more trouble than he bargained for, his current predicament clearly showing that.
"Pidge," Keith grunted as a sword narrowly missed his right shoulder. "How much longer?"
"Only a few more doboshs," Pidge replied. Her fingers twisted with each passing wire, as the computer screen lit up with warnings about nearby threats.
'Ok…she only needs a few doboshs. That shouldn't last long'
But how a few minutes had dragged into what felt like hours, Keith didn't know.
With each soldier that Keith had managed to knock down, more soldiers appeared in their fallen comrades place. It was exhausting, painful, and beyond anything that the red paladin had wanted to experience that night.
Keith swung his sword, once, twice, and a few more times
He panted, dragged his feet, and felt everything slow
His stamina slowed
His mind turned off
And time went still
'What are you doing? MOVE!'
But his feet weren't cooperating
Nothing was cooperating
His eyes roamed past the battlefield, to where the rest of the paladins were fighting. Unaware that their former red paladin was struggling beyond belief.
Keith's eyes landed on Lance first, who was blasting his way to the crowd to a fallen Hunk. But it looked as if Hunk was far from being severely injured, instead there was a small stream of blood running down Hunk's leg.
And he had Lance
Keith had nobody to protect him currently, as it had been safe to assume that Keith wasn't going to be swarmed by Glara soldiers.
That sadly wasn't true anymore
A Glara soldier swung his sword as Keith narrowly missed it by a hair. He turned his head to face the rest of the soldiers but halted once an intense episode of vertigo took over him.
Keith paused
But the dizziness did not
And the fight, sadly, also did not
Keith saw it in the corner of his eye and knew what was going to happen if he didn't move his body to the left. If even a little.
'MOVE!'
Time slowed down as Keith felt the blade go in. And he felt the pain…but he also did not
Nor did he feel his body collide with the ground
'I've been impaled'
The same ironic, yet troubling thought ran through his head. And yet, Keith wanted to laugh, cry, and shake in fear at the same time.
His body trembled as his armor started to turn red, his breaths no longer staying in a steady rhythm.
'Get up! If you don't, Pidge could be overwhelmed!" His heart yelled
'You're hurt and can't get up. You've been impaled for heaven's sake!' His mind argued.
But regardless of what Keith was thinking, or feeling, there was a still a larger need to get up and do something.
It was true, Pidge was probably already overwhelmed at the moment.
And it was probably true that Pidge was injured in some way
'It's all your fault."
Keith's heart stopped at that thought.
Coren, Shiro, and everyone else had counted on him to protect Pidge, to keep her safe from any harm. And yet, here he was, lying on a cold metal floor with a sword that had – rudly he might add – impaled itself in his chest.
It was a losing battle
"Lance, Hunk, anyone?" Keith croaked over the comm's
Luckily, it seemed that luck was on his side for once
"Keith?"
"Lance?"
"Yea Mullet, its me."
"Lance…I need you t..to" Keith started to stutter, slowly feeling the effects of blood loss. "G..g..get to Pid..g..ge."
"Keith? What's going on? Why do you sound so bad?"
It was clear that Lance was concerned at the sound of Keith's voice.
'Wait until he sees me'
"I'm f..f..fine."
"You're clearly not mullet. I'm coming after you, and don't worry, I'm sending Hunk to go check on our favorite green paladin." Lance radioed back as the sound of running feet echoed throughout the comm's.
Speaking of footsteps…
It had taken Keith longer than it should've to realize that there were no Glara soldiers around him, which only concerned him more. If there were less soldiers around him, it meant that there were more soldiers around Pidge.
His worry intensified as he tried to move, which only succeeded in him coughing and clutching his chest. Based on instinct, Keith went to grab the item causing him so much pain.
But he couldn't even lift his arm
He couldn't even breathe
Breathing was starting to become harder, and his mind became more clouded. His vision were black at the edges and when Keith shifted his body, he felt the pool of blood under him.
It was actually more of an ocean
And Keith didn't need to see the area around him to know that amount of blood he had lost. Which to say, was not healthy.
He was about to give in to the darkness when he heard a string of cuss words and a hand under his head. Though he already knew who had seen him.
Lance
"Keith, I – oh my gosh," Lance stuttered, but quickly composed himself to avoid panic on Keith's part. But when he looked down, he had to bit his lip to keep from hyperventilating.
"You're going to be ok Mullet, because if you die...well we'll have to find a new red paladin and I personally don't want to go through that again," Lance rambled, hoping to keep Keith awake. "Don't fall asleep on me Keith, because…I uh….well….or Shiro will kill me."
Keith didn't give a response
"Keith, stop, don't do this to me!"
Lance shook Keith awake, who grumbled about someone interrupting their peaceful rest.
"Lance…" Keith brought his hand to rest on the blue paladin's cheek. "Thank you, but we all know that I can't win this."
"Don't talk like that Keith, we'll get through this."
But his words were starting to sound false, even to him. And when Keith closed his eyes, Lance started to tear up.
Frick it
Lance picked up Keith, as gently as he could, then took off running towards his lion. Tears ran down his cheeks as he set Keith in the cockpit and started his lion.
"Take us to the castle," Lance ordered.
His lion gave a small roar as it took off, clearly concerned at the worry his paladin was giving off
If anything, that made Blue go even faster towards its given destination
"Shiro? Coren?" Lance radioed in as he tried to steady an unconscious Keith.
"Lance, is that you lad?"
"Yes, its me. Coren, I need you to set up a healing pod quickly. Keith got impaled and he's bleeding out everywhere." His words shook as did his breathing, which wasn't surprising as Lance was probably in a harsh state of shock at the moment.
And maybe that's why he didn't hear Coren reply
Because slowly but surely, Lance was feeling his own body shut down
His hearing started to be muffled
His legs and arms only moved when he willed them too
And he just couldn't stop staring at the boy in his arms. The boy that he loved with all his heart and might not make it out of this.
'Stop thinking like that'
But that was harder than it seemed, and he wasn't a fool to not admit that.
"Keith, come on buddy. Please wake up, for Pidge at least," Lance figured if he brought Pidge into the conversation, then maybe the red paladin would've responded.
And in a sense, he did
"P..pidge? Ok?" Keith grimaced as a fresh wave of pain rushed over him.
As did a fresh wave of bleeding
Lance quickly put his hands over the wound, trying to starch the bleeding. But that seemed to tire Keith down even more, if that was even possible.
'He's probably lost half his blood volume'
"L..lanc..e..e, P..pidge ok?"
Lance didn't know how to respond, nor did he know the complete truth.
He didn't know if Pidge was alright, or injured
He didn't know if Hunk was in the same predicament
"I don't know Keith; I don't know if Pidge is ok. And I don't know if you'll be ok," Lance sucked in a harsh breath as tears continued to stream down his cheeks. "But Keith, please be ok. I need you, Shiro needs you and I…I love you."
There it was, the words were now out in the open as sobs rang out from the blue paladins throat. He clutched Keith, minding his injuries of course, but still hanging on for his sake.
"Can I tell you something Keith?"
Keith didn't respond, as he had fallen into the world of unconsciousness. Though that didn't stop Lance from continuing.
"When I was called to be a paladin, I was nervous. And when I met you, I was jealous of how cool you seemed to be, or how confident you were….I grew up in a big family and attention was spread thin for a lot of us. Don't get me wrong, I love my family with all my heart, but nobody seemed to pay attention to me directly." Lance gave a teary chuckle. "And when you started to pay attention to me, even if it was just to scream at me, I…I felt scared. Because I knew that I had never felt like that, and maybe that's what scared me."
There was a 'Or maybe its because I learned to love you, the real you' that he didn't say. But he guessed that Keith wasn't even listening, nor was coherent enough to understand.
Not with all the blood he lost and was still losing
The bleeding hadn't stopped, to which, Lance urged his lion to go faster. But the planet had been far away from the castle, a mistake that Shiro had missed.
Though they hadn't planned for any of this
Keith was deadly pale and taking shallow breaths.
Lance freaked out, which likely was an understatement
He put more pressure around the wound as a few choice words escaped his mouth. Tears turned into waterfalls, and sobs turned into hysterical crying.
"Keith…honey…don't do this to me!" He cried out
"I love you Lance," the red paladin reached up to cup his cheeks. It seemed that Lance's crying had woken up Keith from his fevered slumber. His breathing started to slow each passing moment.
"No, no no no! Hold on a little longer! Pl-"
A voice crackled on the comm's, and by the rough voice, it was safe to assume that Lance already knew who it was.
"This is Hunk, me and Pidge are leaving the planet."
"Is anyone hurt?" Coran's voice responded back
"No, I was able to get to Pidge in time. All we have are a few scrapes and bruises."
Lance knew that he should've let out a breath of relief, but he didn't respond, nor give any indication of awareness. With a dying boy in his arms, and no way that he could promise himself that Keith would survive this battle…he simply didn't have a heart to talk to anyone except to the red paladin.
The world was turning black
His senses were numb
And his anxiety was at sky high
"How are Lance and Keith doing?" Hunk asked over the comm's
Lance didn't respond
"They are moving back towards the castle. Keith was impaled but Lance got to him just in time."
"Impaled?" Pidge's voice was quiet, though the blue paladin could clearly see the tears forming in Pidges eyes. "Is he going to be, ok?"
It was Lance's turn to respond, as he couldn't hold back his sorrow from the team anymore
"I don't know," he sobbed. "I don't know, and…" Lance didn't finish the sentence.
Nor did he feel when his lion landed in the hanger, or when Shiro raced to take Keith from his arms without hesitation.
Or when he helped pull the sword out of Keith's stomach
Or when he heard the machines go wild with Keith's vitals dropping
Or when Shiro had to preform CPR
But he did come back to earth when he saw Keith in the pod, resting without a trance of pain in his expression and stance.
And that's when he allowed himself that breath of air
As he sat near the pod, waiting for Keith to come stumbling out, he thought back to what Shiro had said to him a few hours prior.
"He's going to be ok," Shiro had told him.
That was enough
Because Lance knew where he stood with Keith, and it was a far better stance than he thought
Keith loved him
And he loved Keith
With all his heart, mind, will, and strength that was the size of the entire galaxy.
