A Dog's Purpose Is Strange Magic Chapter 39
Bailey is now officially concerned about her boy's current state of mind.
Ever since he encountered that strange mirror Harry can think of nothing else lately. He's starting to obsess over it and even Ron is getting worried. He tells Harry to pay no heed to the mirror that it's dangerous because of how it's affecting Harry. But Harry doesn't listen to the warning.
Instead, he chooses to sneak out again from Gryffindor Tower one night with Bailey in tow. Harry excitedly marches straight up to the reflective glass planning himself directly in front of it in order to drink the image he can see in.
Bailey soon discovers not long inside that room they are not alone.
Searching the room Bailey locates the Headmaster positioned near the entrance sitting on a desk observing them. So desperate to get to the mirror Harry must've walked them right past him. Even now he fails to notice the man.
Extracting herself from her boy Bailey approaches Dumbledore. Upon reaching him Dumbledore smiles, tenderly patting her on the head and then stroking her crown. Bailey shuts her eyes halfway, huffing in pleasure at the attention.
Turning his attention towards Harry, announcing his presence, Professor Dumbledore said "So…back again, Harry?"
Jumping onto his feet and spinning around, eyes wide in fear, Harry said "I…I didn't see you, sir."
Chuckling, Professor Dumbledore said "Strange how nearsighted being invisible can make you."
Sending an accusing glare in Bailey's direction, Harry said "You didn't think to warn me?"
In amusement, Professor Dumbledore said "I doubt you gave her much of a chance given how unfocused you were of your surroundings."
Slipping off the desk to sit on the floor with Harry as Bailey places her head in her boy's lap, Professor Dumbledore said "So you, like hundreds before you, have discovered the delights of the Mirror of Erised."
"I didn't know it was called that, sir," said Harry, ducking his head both sheepishly and respectfully.
"But I expect you've realized by now what it does."
"Well it shows me my family," answered Harry.
"And it showed your friend Ron as Head Boy," added Professor Dumbledore.
Eyes now huge, Harry said "How did you know-?"
Gently cutting Harry off, I don't need a cloak to become invisible. Now, can you think of what the Mirror shows us all?"
Harry shakes his head in confusion.
Professor Dumbledore then explains that someone content with his life without needless wants or desires sees only himself while someone the complete opposite and an image of their most desperate longing of the heart. But it'll neither provide knowledge nor truth. Men and women will waste away before the mirror which makes it extremely dangerous to the beholder. And because of this danger, the Mirror of Erised will be removed to a new home.
The explanation about the Mirror intrigues Bailey. Bailey guesses she never fully understands her pull and desire to one day have puppies and be a mother to them. And to share it with her boy to laugh and play.
Bailey's attention refocuses on them at the same time Professor Dumbledore warns Harry not to go looking for it again and the now timid and smarter boy agrees.
Patting Harry on the shoulder, Professor Dumbledore said "Now, why don't you put that admirable Cloak back on and get off to bed with Bailey."
Standing up a thoughtful expression crosses Harry's face.
Curious, Harry said "Professor Dumbledore? Can I ask you something?"
Smiling softly, and nodding, Professor Dumbledore said "Obviously you've just done so. You may ask."
Cocking his head to the side, Harry said "What do you see when you look in the mirror?"
Bailey headbutts Harry's leg for his rudeness.
"What," said Harry, shrugging.
Bailey woofs scolding shaking her head at him.
"I? I see myself holding a pair of thick, woolen socks," said Professor Dumbledore, forlorn. "One can never have enough socks. "Another Christmas has come and gone and I didn't get a single pair. People will insist on giving me books."
Socks?
That's a strange thing to say. But then again Professor Dumbledore is already peculiar.
Another question comes to Harry's mind.
"By the way Sir, I never thanked you for letting me bring Bailey to school. It means a lot to me," said Harry, appreciating how far Professor Dumbledore went to do this for him.
Bending down to scratch Bailey underneath her chin, Professor Dumbledore said "You're very welcome, Harry. No one should be without their animal. Least of all their familiar. Now good night."
"Good night, Sir," said Harry, waving farewell as they departed.
Pleased and satisfied that Harry isn't punished for breaking the rules again Bailey wonders what tomorrow will bring.
